@Dusksong 1 is the standard, but some bigger situations can justify 2 or 3, try to stay within the same tier as everyone else if at all possible. If you go on and say that you were training I'd just give it 1.
As for caught and gifted Pokemon, just put them in the range of your others just to keep things relatively fast tracked.

@LuckyBlackCat Yeah, sand teams are something I'd like to think I know. Character wise he's really distant and cold seeming(as well as intimidating), though once someone gets past that he's probably one of the most kind and loyal people you could possibly find.
