Goku never acted so concerned about anything for the entire arc up to that point. And I don't think I recall a point when he was close to bawling even as far back as Z. It was so strange to see, but it made me feel even more tense. I was genuinely concerned, because Roshi dying there would have probably been a natural death, meaning no wish-backs.

To be fair, three or more other characters used the ECW without dying when they were weaker than Roshi currently is. And Goku only reacted right because he was reacting out of character for the whole tournament to raise the stakes.
