"I'll go first," answered Shiranui and took his side of the battlefield.
"This battle will be a two-on-two single battle with no time limit and only the challenger can switch Pokémon," the official stated.
"Pidgey, you're up!"
"Wani, I choose you!" Shiranui sent out his Totodile to battle Falkner's Pidgey.
"Pidgey, Gust!"
"Wani, Ice Punch!" After Wani was buffeted by a gust of wind, the Totodile ran up and punched Pidgey with an ice-laden fist, dealing heavy damage.
"Pidgey, Tackle!"
"Wani, Bite!" Pidgey swooped in and dive bombed Wani and the Totodile gave Pidgey a Bite, not letting go until Pidgey crash landed, knocked out.
"Pidgey, return; Pidgeotto, you're up!"
"Wani, return; Kyouchou, I choose you!" Both trainers switched their Pokémon. In Shiranui's case he sent out his Murkrow.
"Pidgeotto, Quick Attack!"
"Kyouchou, Feather dance!" The Murkrow used his Prankster ability to cover Pidgeotto with downy feathers to Falkner's shock before Pidgeotto struck. Pidgeotto's attack didn't do as much damage due to the feathers.
"So your Murkrow has the Prankster ability," stated Falkner.
"That's right," replied Shiranui.
"Pidgeotto, Tackle!"
"Kyouchou, Wing Attack!" Both birds flew at each other and their attacks met. Pidgeotto got struck by Kyouchou's wings and the Murkrow was hit by Pidgeotto's body.
"Pidgeotto, Quick Attack!"
"Kyouchou, Feather Dance!" Kyouchou was one step ahead as he covered Pidgeotto in even more down before being hit by a Quick Attack softened to one third of its power.
"Pidgeotto, Gust!"
"Kyouchou, finish it off with Feint Attack!" The Murkrow flitted out of sight before blindsiding Pidgeotto into a crash landing. Pidgeotto was knocked out and Shiranui won the battle.
"You've battled excellently and for defeating me, I award you the Zephyr Badge," stated Falkner.
"Thanks Falkner," replied Shiranui.
The next day, Shiranui was thinking about strategies to use against the gym.
Shiranui did likewise. "Ready to take on the gym tomorrow?" he asked.
Shiranui entered the tower and was awestruck at the giant pillar moving back and forth. He discovered a Shuppet to his surprise. "Shuppet, the Puppet Pokémon. It loves vengeful emotions and hangs in rows under the eaves of houses where vengeful people live."
"Kyouchou, Pursuit!" Shiranui let out his Murkrow, who proceeded to strike down Shuppet. Shuppet used Spite to cut the PP of Kyouchou's Pursuit. "Dusk Ball, go!" Shiranui readied a Dusk Ball and threw it at Shuppet. Shuppet tried hard to escape to no avail as the ball snapped shut. Shiranui named the Shuppet Onryou after a vengeful yokai he read about.
Shiranui was in the same boat as Liam in terms of what Pokémon had a disadvantage. He knew Kyouchou can execute status moves quicker than normal. After checking in at the Pokémon Centre, Shiranui decided to wait until night before training as he had heard of ghost Pokémon haunting Sprout Tower at that time.

Shiranui had been training his Pokémon on the local Rattata and Pidgey population as well. Kumo was hard to train since Shiranui restricted the Spinarak to battling Rattata and the occasional Sentret.
Our heroes started on their trek towards Violet City.
"I sure am," answered Shiranui.
Shiranui returned Kyouchou. "We should heal up and make our way to Violet City," he suggested.
