"There's only one way to know for sure," replied Shiranui.
"Both Liam and I have Pokémon that might be able to tell us," stated Shiranui, referring to Sherlock and Jean—both of which are Alakazam.
Kurt handed over the Friend Balls Shiranui requested. "Do you think the GS Ball can only be opened in a certain place?" Shiranui asked.
Shiranui did likewise and as he got into bed, he thought about what the Ilex Forest may be like.
"The only way to find out for sure is to battle her," answered Shiranui.
Shiranui had done the same with his Poké Balls. "Liam, I heard that our next gym leader is even tougher to beat now than before," Shiranui gossiped, "Something about swapping out her Clefairy for a Jigglypuff." He wasn't sure it was true, but he did see the logic now that the Clefairy evolution line has been reclassified as Fairy types.
"Sounds good to me," replied Shiranui, "We have a forest to traverse."
After Bugsy healed his Pokémon, it was Shiranui's turn. Bugsy sent Spinarak out and Shiranui started with Kyouchou.
"Spinarak, String Shot!"
"Kyouchou, Taunt!" The Murkrow took the opportunity to insult Spinarak into only using attacking moves. Spinarak couldn't use String Shot.
"Spinarak, Poison Sting!"
"Kyouchou, Wing Attack!" Kyouchou swooped in and struck Spinarak with a wing before being pelted with stingers.
"Spinarak, Leech Life!"
"Kyouchou, finish it off with another Wing Attack!" Another swoop was all it took to take Spinarak out.
Bugsy sent Metapod out and Shiranui swapped Kyouchou for Wani.
"Metapod, Harden!"
"Wani, Bite!" The Totodile charged at Metapod and bit down on the cocoon hard. Metapod stiffened.
"Harden once more!"
"Wani, Water Gun!" Shiranui knew no amount of Hardens could ward off a Water Gun as Metapod was blasted with water before becoming harder.
"Harden!"
"Wani, finish it off with Water Gun!" One last blast of water was all it took to knock Metapod out.
When Bugsy sent Scyther out, Shiranui knew the real battle started here.
"Scyther, Fury Cutter!"
"Wani, Bite!" Scyther charged in and gave Wani a slash. From that, Wani let off a bright glow, evolving to a Croconaw.
"Croconaw, the Big Jaw Pokémon and the evolved form of Totodile. Once it bites down, it won't let go until it loses its fangs. New fangs quickly grow into place." Wani gave one of Scyther's legs a bite and was refusing to let go.
"Scyther, Fury Cutter!" Scyther slashed Wani with a scythe and even though it did more damage, Wani was still holding on. Shiranui noticed a light blue glow coming from Wani's mouth and when Wani applied more pressure to Scyther's leg, the mantis was frozen solid. "Way to go, Wani!" Shiranui praised, realising Wani had learned Ice Fang.
"Wani, Bite!" Wani upped the pressure on the frozen Scyther's leg and that was all it took to take Scyther down.
Bugsy congratulated Shiranui on his win and awarded him the Hive Badge.

When they arrived at the gym, Shiranui noticed trees surrounding the battlefield. "Which of us should take on the gym first?" he asked.
"That's a good idea," replied Shiranui before making his way back to the Pokémon Centre.
