"And I just happen to have one," replied Shiranui, "I've seen the way Morty battles. He usually goes for the Mean Look/Curse combination. Mean Look no longer works on Ghost Pokémon, but as you said, using one is risky."
"This battle will be a 2-on-2 single battle with no time limit," stated Whitney, "Only you can switch Pokémon. Jigglypuff, go!"
"Jigglypuff, the Balloon Pokémon. It captivates foes with its huge, round eyes, then lulls them to sleep by singing a soothing melody."
"Kumo, I choose you!" Shiranui sent his Spinarak out and the battle was on.
"Jigglypuff, Attract!"
"Kumo, Toxic!" The Spinarak sprayed Jigglypuff with venom from her fangs and the latter was badly poisoned. Jigglypuff tried to captivate Spinarak with an adorable face, but Spinarak had none of it.
"That'll never work on Kumo," stated Shiranui, "She's female like your Jigglypuff."
"In that case, Jigglypuff, give us a few bars of your famous song!"
"Kumo, time to break out that new move I taught you! Venoshock!" The Spinarak spat a different venom at Jigglypuff. The toxins reacted and corroded away a good fraction of Jigglypuff's HP. Jigglypuff started singing and Kumo fell asleep.
"Jigglypuff, Pound!"
"Kumo, Venoshock!" Kumo remained asleep while Jigglypuff gave the Spinarak a hard hit.
"Jigglypuff, Disable!"
"Kumo, Venoshock!" This time, Kumo woke up and let off a bright glow. The Spinarak's hind legs moved to the back of her abdomen and the glow subsided to reveal an Ariados whom spat a more potent venom at Jigglypuff. Jigglypuff's eyes glowed and a mental block was placed on Kumo's Venoshock move before Jigglypuff succumbed to the poison.
"Jigglypuff, return; go Miltank!" Whitney sent our her infamous Miltank and Shiranui knew the real battle was on just like Bugsy's Scyther back at the Azalea Gym.
"Miltank, Stomp!"
"Kumo, Bug Bite!" Miltank stomped hard on Kumo before receiving a bite on her leg. Kumo stole and ate Miltank's Lum Berry and though the Ariados didn't suffer a status problem, it prevented Miltank from healing herself from status ailments.
"Miltank, Rollout!"
"Kumo, Toxic!" Miltank curled up and started rolling towards Kumo, running over the Ariados and dealing a super effective hit. The damage wasn't much at first, but Shiranui knew Kumo couldn't survive many more hits. Kumo sprayed a nasty venom in Miltank's path, making sure the milk cow ran over the poisoned battlefield. Miltank was badly poisoned and Shiranui knew it was only a matter of time before the poison took Miltank out.
"Kumo, Dig!" Before Kumo could dig her way underground, Miltank ran the Ariados over for another hit. After Kumo dug underground, Miltank slowed to a halt and braced herself for a hit. The hit came and it was a critical hit, made more powerful due to the Ariados' Sniper ability. Miltank was on her last legs and Whitney had a smirk on her face.
"Miltank, Milk Drink!"
"Kumo, Bug Bite!" Miltank drank her own milk and recovered some HP before receiving another nasty bite from Kumo.
"Miltank, Rollout!"
"Kumo, Venoshock!" Miltank ran over Kumo and the Ariados was down for the count.
"Kumo, return; Onryou, I choose you!" Shiranui switched the fallen Ariados and sent his Shuppet out. "Onryou, Protect!" Onryou conjured the green protection shield and Miltank bounced off, crashing to a halt.
"Miltank, Rollout!"
"Onryou, Curse!" Miltank went into another roll and ran over Onryou before the Shuppet drove a big pin into herself, placing a curse on Miltank. Shiranui knew he had taken a big risk with Curse. Cursed and badly poisoned, Miltank was down to her last legs again.
"Miltank, Milk Drink!"
"Onryou, Feint Attack!" Miltank drank her own milk again before being blindsided by a charge from Onryou. The amount of time Miltank had battled allowed for the poison to be very potent and a combination of it and the curse caused Miltank to faint.
Whitney was on the verge of crying again, but after Onryou fed from her again, she was calm. "Congratulations on your win, Shiranui," said Whitney, "I award you the Plain Badge."
"Thanks Whitney," replied Shiranui, "Even if you lose, you're a great trainer."
After returning to the Pokémon Centre to heal his Pokémon, Shiranui realised the next badge he'd win was from the gym in his home town.

Shiranui looked aghast at the events after the battle. "Onryou, feeding time!" He let his Shuppet out. "The gym leader's upset," Shiranui told his Shuppet. Getting the message, Onryou started to feed on Whitney's sadness. After a while, the feeding left the gym leader tranquil.
"I sure am," answered Shiranui, psyching himself up for what he felt was a difficult battle.
Shiranui healed his Pokémon and didn't feel the need to make any team adjustments as he had a strategy in mind.
Shiranui decided to do similarly; working on Kumo, Onryou and Hitsuji especially.
The wheel spun again and Shiranui pressed the button. It landed on Dusk Stone and Shiranui was handed one.
Shiranui followed with Kyouchou back in his Poké Ball.
Time ticked down to the last five minutes and Shiranui found what he had been looking for: a Scyther; and to his luck, this one had the Technician ability. "Kyouchou, it's time to bag us a winner! Start with Wing Attack!" Scyther spun its arms, sending scythe-like voids at Kyouchou that did an amount of damage that struck Shiranui with awe. Kyouchou swooped in and struck the mantis with his wings that did enough damage for Shiranui take action. "Park Ball, go!" Shiranui threw one of the Poké Balls provided by the National Park for their contests and Scyther was drawn in. The ball shook thrice and just as it was about to ping shut, Scyther popped out and gave Kyouchou a False Swipe, leaving the Murkrow hanging by a thread. "Park Ball, go!" Shiranui threw another Park Ball and Scyther was once again inside fighting to escape. "Come on…" he said, hoping to make this last shot count. After the third shake, the longest five seconds of Shiranui's life went by before the ball pinged to announce a successful capture. He let out a breath he had been holding while a battered Kyouchou landed next to his trainer. Picking up Scyther's Park Ball, Shiranui said to it, "Welcome to the team, Sundan."
