Kohaku won through giving Steelix a burn with Fire Fang and using the infamous Taunt/Torment combo to get around Steelix's defences until time was up. Shiranui knew that Liam's Blastoise would be tough to beat.

Shiranui continued his theme of using ancient Pokémon when he sent Kohaku out against a Blitzle. "Blitzle, the electrified Pokémon. Its mane shines when it discharges electricity. They use the frequency and rhythm of these flashes to communicate." One Earthquake from the Mega Aerodactyl was enough to shake Blitzle into a knockout.
Shiranui used Boukun in his appeal round and had the Tyrunt show off the car-crushing power in his jaws by using Crunch to break a Rock Tomb into smaller stones and using Stealth Rock with the stones. Boukun let off a bright glow as he evolved into a Tyrantrum during his appeal and finished it off by letting off a loud Roar.

Shiranui had registered earlier and was also in the green room preparing his entrants.
After our heroes got their training done and their Pokémon healed, it was time for them to make their way to the local Contest Hall.
Shiranui followed and sent Kage out to counteract the volcanic heat with a ghostly chill. He was horrified when he heard about Zerina's past.
"It's up to you, Sashia," stated Shiranui, "You can talk it over with Zerina if you're unsure."
"Sparring with a Magmortar would be good training indeed for him," Shiranui agreed.
"Well, the only person among us who has yet to beat said gym is Sashia," replied Shiranui, knowing that Mike had already won his Volcano Badge, "It's good to see you too."
"Not that long," answered Shiranui, "Though time is a clue, think about what logical connection you would make between it and a face."
