I don't know if I can really see the scifi influences from what you've posted, but I do like it.

Sci-fi influences will become a bit more prominent when I post more about the setting and character creation, if this gets enough interest. tl;dr the Dreamguard uses a lot of magitech.

This world is not real. It is but a precarious dream, a reflection of what could have been if the real world hadn't ended sixty years ago.

In this world, we know of the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 as the closest that the Cold War had escalated into nuclear war, an international catastrophe that was barely averted in time. But reality was much crueler. Strategic nuclear weapons were detonated all over the globe as the Third World War ensued, the devastation forcing supernatural powers that had long since hidden in the shadows to reveal themselves. And as if the planet itself was crying out in agony and lament, an otherworldly black tar surged forth from deep within the earth, drenching all in its unfathomable darkness. Within months, the human race was practically extinct. But that of course could not have been the end of our story.

Perhaps in response to the darkness that had engulfed the world, or perhaps simply to the unprecedented degrees of suffering and death, divine light rained down from the skies to protect the souls of those who perished in the apocalypse. As the countless lost souls ascended to heaven, from within their last memories and regrets coalesced a singular wish… The wish that none of the horrors and loss in the past months ever happened; the wish to go back to how things were. And thus, this dream was born, a global collective dream in which the world never ended. Unwilling to accept the truth, the initial inhabitants of this purgatorial world-dream subconsciously blocked out all memories of the reality that they left behind, while those born in the dream would never have a chance to know that any reality existed other than their own.

But a grand illusion of this magnitude, born from forces beyond human understanding, is not so easily maintained. And where there are dreams, there are nightmares. The collective subconscious desire for an unperturbed normal existence enforces the "rules" we expect, but the dregs of the collective human psyche sink and accumulate in the Mists of Oblivion beneath the Dream, from which beings of Nightmare arise. During the day, the Dream is virtually impregnable, but at night, when consciousness gives way to dark impulses and desires normally buried and hidden, the sleeping Dreamers may become vulnerable to the influence of Nightmares. No direct physical harm is apparent, but the mind is another thing altogether, wounded and warped and maybe even broken altogether.

Fortunately, not all are helpless against the darkness. Some have the potential to see the Dream for what it truly is, and manipulate the psychic energies that make up this false reality. Tracing their origins back to supernatural secret societies that have existed throughout history, these Lucid Dreamers have formed the Dreamguard, a secret organization dedicated to preserving the Dream and protecting Dreamers from the forces of Nightmare.

You have been one of the Dreamers blissfully unaware of the true nature of your existence, until very recently. Unbeknownst to you, an incredible power slept deep in your soul, among the greatest of powers the Dreamguard have ever seen. Because of this dormant power, you were targeted by creatures of Nightmare, your mind dragged into a distorted Nightmare Realm when your body was asleep. By reflex, your power burst forth to drive away the monsters, even as the Dreamguard arrived in perhaps unnecessary rescue. Now aware of the truth of this world, you feel that you have little choice but to join the Dreamguard, so that you can learn to harness your powers and protect those important to you.

And who knows… If you master your powers, you may have a chance to glimpse into the real truth behind all this. If anyone can, it is you.
I made this RP previously in the advanced section, but it died due to inactivity. Since the casual section is much more active, I'm trying my luck again here and want to see if anyone is interested. Post standards and expectations will be adjusted for casual accordingly.

This story takes place in a world much like our own, at least on the surface. The primary difference is the existence of New Atlantis, an artificial island megacity in the North Atlantic Ocean near Europe, built through the cooperation of multiple world powers in the twentieth century. Spanning over a hundred kilometers in radius, and boasting a multinational population like no other, New Atlantis is unquestionably one of the central pillars of modern society.

However, in recent times the famed Atlantean city has fallen into uncertainty. At the culmination of political and territorial disputes between several world powers, New Atlantis was placed into lockdown four months ago, with no civilian travel permitted in or out. A veneer of normalcy was maintained by mass media, but people living elsewhere soon found themselves mysteriously unable to contact their friends and family in New Atlantis. Things looked completely normal from the outside, yet no electronic communication could go through, and those brave enough to violate the lockdown and enter the artificial island were never heard from again; it's like this city has silently disappeared from the world.

You are one of the many people desperately trying to find out the truth behind New Atlantis, for one reason or another. Perhaps you have resources and connections at your disposal that allow you to dig further and deeper than the average person. But the more you dig, the more you are met with coordinated, almost conspiracy-theory levels of effort in dodging and obfuscating the truth, in government and corporate entities alike. Just as you are about to reach your wit's end, she appears before you.

Appearing human on the most basic level, yet inhumanly beautiful by the standards of most. Casually floating in midair, in blatant defiance of physics. Tight, revealing black dress that blends into the swirling aura of darkness around her, a presence both otherworldly and intimately familiar, akin to the spiritual manifestation of human decadence and desire itself. And her eyes, orbs of unnatural amaranth, are devoid of the usual gleam of human light and reason, instead resembling the bottomless abyss that consumes all who fall into its embrace.

"You desire the truth, don't you?" Her silken voice caresses your ears. "But is it something you can handle? The world is far darker and more dangerous than you could have ever imagined..." The seductress's ruby lips curl into a devious smirk. "But I can change that. I can give you power, the power to go far beyond human limits, to find out the truth of this world for yourself..."

You try to say something, anything, but your body is paralyzed by this woman's mysterious power. Is she going to give you power like this? In your heart of hearts, you know that the entity before you is the epitome of a deal with the devil. Should you accept what she offers, there will be no going back.

"Heh, did you think I was going to give you a choice?" As if reading your thoughts, her smirk widens into a grin. "Sorry, but the potential of your soul is too valuable. I'm going to implant you with the Seed now, and send you to New Atlantis. Embrace this power and become strong for me, will you? Then you may be able to get to the bottom of it all, fix everything, and come out of this alive… I'll be watching you carefully."

Before you can react, the demoness is already very close to you, tapping your chest with a delicate crimson-nailed finger. Instantly, the whole world around you becomes a blur, and you feel like you're falling through an endless pit…

Eventually things stop spinning, and your eyes readjust, but you still cannot believe what you're seeing. The sky is pitch-black, crackling with streams of searing, otherworldly colors that form eldritch sigils and bathe the world below in an eerie dim light. An utterly devastated cityscape sprawls around you, the shattered remains of buildings strangled by thick thorny vines of inky darkness. Puddles of black tar litter the ground, some seeping out of large cracks, occasionally erupting into sparks of ghostly flame. Just as you begin to wonder if you've been taken to another world entirely, you see the Atlantean Spire, the massive skyscraper tower and tallest building in the world, the most easily recognizable symbol of New Atlantis itself. Several vines of monstrous size have coiled themselves around the Spire, covered in thorns and made of the unknown black substance like the smaller specimens around you, cracks on their surfaces pulsating with dreadful energy. Can this really be New Atlantis? What happened to it in the past four months, and why didn't anyone outside notice?

You are distracted from your thoughts by a sharp hiss nearby. Its source is a hideous thing straight out of some monster movie or video game, barely humanoid in shape, hunched over and sharp ice crystals protruding from its pallid skin. Darkness swirls around it, but unlike that of the woman earlier that felt like temptation itself, this energy makes every hair on your skin stand up in alert. Tattered remains of human clothing still cling to the creature, yet there is no intellect in its eyes as they focus on you, only the primal instinct to hunt and kill.

Somehow, you're not nearly as afraid as you should normally be. In fact, you feel a newfound power surging through you, something you've never experienced before; the sense of danger from the monster before you is quickly becoming insignificant in comparison. Is this what the dark goddess has given you? Can you really use it to find out the truth and return this city to normal? Whatever the case is, you're here now, and it's up to you to make the best of this unprecedented situation…
New Atlantis. Once the bustling capital of the world, now reduced to a twisted, nightmarish hellscape, somehow without the slightest notice from the rest of society. Lilith floats several kilometers in the air, her glassy, vacant eyes focusing on nothing but taking in the entirety of the ruinous majesty before her. Not much emotion shows on her lovely face, but the corners of her glossy crimson lips curl slightly in distaste. The poor souls that she's dragging into this forsaken place can't possibly take it well, but their preferences aren't exactly something she can afford to take into consideration, given what is really at stake.

Her empty gaze turns toward the four people floating in front of her, each trapped in a prison of elaborate magic, swirling runes of darkness suppressing their consciousness. Even with their newfound powers, these former humans are like ants underneath an elephant's feet when compared with Lilith herself, but their magical potentials are truly remarkable. There is no training ground better than this apocalyptic city before them, and given the right trials and tribulations, hopefully they'll eventually become strong enough. And if not, well… She can always find others, no matter how many it takes.

Closing her eyes, Lilith sends out a pulse of invisible psychic energy, sweeping across everything in a fifty-kilometer radius around herself. Subtle enough to avoid detection by most beings, yet powerful enough to pass through most obstacles and precise enough to note down most relevant details, it quickly finds a suitable location for Lilith to deposit the former humans at. Initially separated from each other, and attacked by weak monsters shortly after regaining consciousness, this will provide a good opportunity for them to familiarize themselves with their new powers; but they are all close enough to each other that it should not take long for them to run into each other. If things do not go as planned, a little nudge can always be given to move things along. With a flick of her delicate fingers, she sends out four black darts that streak through the air and arrive at their destinations within seconds, before expanding into portals whose other ends open up next to her. Each unconscious person around her is then pulled by strings of invisible force through the portals, and placed gently upon the ground.

As the magic keeping them in a stupor dissipates, the four visitors quickly regain awareness, the process smooth enough that it seems as though only a few brief disorienting moments have passed. But their surroundings have totally changed, and so have their bodies. Their newly-awakened sixth senses soon become aware of the atmospheric aura of what New Atlantis had become, the immediate acrid sting of pain, terror, and despair mixed with the rotten stain of greed, lust, envy, and hatred, all riding on an undercurrent of something darker, more sinister that they cannot quite describe. An ordinary human would have been brought to his knees within seconds, but fortunately for the newcomers, this environment is little more than a highly unpleasant odor to their magically strengthened bodies and minds.

The metahumans begin to take in their surroundings. And just as Lilith intended, they hear the hissing and other inhuman noises of monsters nearby. This whole situation is almost certainly going to be too much to take in, but that has to be left for later. They have more urgent matters to take care of now.
@Qitcat I pinged you in the Discord server to talk about your character. If you didn’t get the message, DM me on Discord.
@Qitcat

1. The image you're embedding seems to be broken.

2. Does your character have any offensive abilities, or is it just invisibility and intangibility?

3. Related to the above, if no abilities other than invisibility and intangibility, how does the 30 in sabotage come into play? It means she has to be able to inflict debuffs, and is very good at it.

4. Also related to the above, if being an engineer is so important to your character, shouldn't she have thematically related abilities? Maybe things related to metal, machinery, and/or electricity. Possessing machines is always a possibility for the ghost-like theme.

If you join my Discord server, it would be much easier to discuss character ideas.

Rules

All guild rules apply. In addition, there are a few points that I want to clarify and emphasize.

- Each player is not limited to one character. Feel free to make multiple characters now or later if you think you can handle it, within reason. You can make minor characters that are more akin to NPCs, and potentially turn them into major characters later if you want. I expect this to be a pretty slow-paced RP, maybe one or two posts a week, so use that to judge how many characters you want.

- I am someone who takes internal consistency and verisimilitude very seriously. Therefore, if I see something in your post that I believe to be a plot hole, I'm almost always going to ask you to fix it. If you don't, I may have to gratuitously retcon some things, or even declare your post invalid.

- Don't godmod. When interacting with another character, work together with that character's owner to ensure everyone's actions, reactions, and consequences remain consistent. That includes NPCs controlled by the GM and co-GM.

- I'll try to give player characters a moderate amount of plot armor and good luck. But actions have consequences, and the suspension of disbelief only stretches so far. Keep that in mind before you try to make a dangerously reckless character.

- Mature topics involving corruption on both personal and societal levels will be discussed in the plot. As per forum rules, there won't be anything explicit, nor will I make things pointlessly grimdark, but just be aware that this isn't an innocent kids' show.

- If you want to leave the game, I'll try to retcon out your character's existence. If that's not feasible, I'll try to remove your character from the plot as painlessly as possible.
