No offense intended. But there's a sweet spot on the sliding scale of realism, and most of the interest checks I usually see skew too far to the realism end for me.

Can't describe how quickly I go from excited to sad when a mecha premise turns out to be realism wankery.

"You both speak English?" Abraham asked with a note of surprise, lapsing into his native language for the duration of the sentence. It was far from impossible, even improbable, to encounter another English speaker, but two at once was nevertheless unusual. Without waiting for an answer, he idly brought up the menu, looking up both of their usernames. Walliam's, specifically, but he looked up... Kawaiianpunch666 as well. ... He had to admit, that was a pretty funny name.

"You might not do too badly." He said to Walliam, answering the question, albeit a bit belatedly. "I've been planning to tackle the boss. I'd be happy to party up with you, if you'd like."
"Gaming rigs never go out of style. Have to play my older games somehow." Abraham commented, talking a moment to look over the player's equipment. What he discern about it, at least. It wasn't bad. Sturdy enough. It was clearly starting gear, though, and wouldn't hold up for very long in the upper levels. Naturally he'd replace it at some point. "I've never tried using a shield offensively, but there's no reason it shouldn't work. Be careful who you take on, though. You're going to want to get some better gear before long."

...

"Sorry, did you say something about the Easter boss?"

The college student tried to keep the surprise out of his voice, but he was definitely surprised. Taking on an event boss on one's first day was a bold move to say the least, especially with low level gear.
"If you know how to move in real life, you know here." Abraham commented, approaching the two other players. He didn't know either of them, ad for that simple reason he normally wouldn't have stopped to talk, but one seemed to be a new player. That was cause for him to pause a moment. On the altruistic end of the spectrum, he wanted to see if they were adjusting well. But on the other end, he loved talking to new players for the simple reason that their opinions were fresh. A new take on a world that he was already used to, and fresh eyes were an invaluable learning experience.

"Well, except for weapons and a few other tricks. The controls are nice and basic, though." The college student was sure to speak in Japanese, given that most of the players were Japanese themselves, but something about the Gnome's username indicated that he might not be. The fact that it was a pun on William Wallace, specifically. Maybe he'd ask later, but for the moment, he needed to remember his manners. Giving a slightly sheepish smile, he held a hand out to shake.

"Sorry, I couldn't help but overhear. Talking to new players is always interesting. What do you think of ALO?"
VR was wonderful. It was the ability to create a world, and experience it as though it were reality. To recreate aspects of the real world in perfect detail, and craft experiences that simply would not be possible on Earth's surface. Exploration deep beneath the sea without scuba gear. Exploring the depths of space, wandering brand new worlds. Flight. Creatures that had never existed suddenly could walk off the page and right into a world that you experienced as though you truly were there.

The SAO Incident, as it had come to be known, had scared a lot of people away. By all rights, Abraham Martin should have been one of them. He had been a single choice away from joining the ten thousand people trapped within. Ironically, it had done the opposite. He wanted to learn about the wonders of virtual reality more, and strive to understand how it worked. What people enjoyed. And how to craft worlds of his own.

It was this desire that brought him to a computer lab in Japan, watching the clock in the bottom right of his screen tick towards the end of the period while he pretended to read from his textbook. Not that he was goofing off, mind. He'd finished reading the chapter fifteen minutes ago. Now he was waiting for the period to end while thinking about what he'd need to retrieve once he logged on to ALO.

There was a boss to be killed, after all.

It took him exactly sixteen minutes to get from the lab to his home once the period ended. He counted. He hurled his bag on the couch, practically sprinted to the desk, and hurriedly jammed the Amusphere on his head.

"Link start."

Simple worlds, but what they heralded was anything but. Where others saw a meaningless startup sequence, he saw preparation. The sequences he knew were running unseen to make this new world his reality. Fortunately, he had expected that he would be in a hurry and left his avatar tucked away in a corner of the city nearest the boss in order to save on travel time. He had most of his gear already, he just needed a few potions, and then maybe to see if anyone knew anything about the boss yet.

This was going to be fun.

I plan to have my unintentional doppelganger take part in the boss fight. I'll post as soon as I can, but I'm currently away from my proper computer.
Finally done, despite a desire to have finished yesterday.

So, not immediately relevant, but it occurred to me while I was working on a CS. Did the SAO Incident still happen here?
Hey! I'm interested, and will be making a CS. I'll try to have one done tonight, but it'll depend on how cooperative my brain is.

Really sorry for my absence. Kaithas mentioned it, but I found myself without internet access the instant I finally overcame the real life events that had already been slowing me down.

I should be back, now. I won't be around much this weekend, but I'll do my best to get caught up and post shortly.
So I'm deeply sorry for my absence for the past few days, I had an unexpected surge both in school work and work hours, coupled with a Daylight Savings Time induced mismatch between my internal clock and the rest of the world. All of the above have more or less been rectified (or at least balanced again), so I wanted to poke my head in to let everyone know that I am still around, and that I'll hopefully be catching up today.

And if working through what I missed doesn't take too much time, posting too.
