@Forsythe Well assuming a drastic personality shift doesn't take place semblances evolve over time. For instance, Sapphire's little sister Demetra has an empathic semblance, given enough time she also develops the ability to siphon off the emotions of others and turn them into strength. I was thinking something along those lines for Sapphire could make her now passive semblance deadly but I can't nail down the logistics of it. At the moment she has the ability to manipulate people's perception of herself so what could that evolve into that could kill on contact?

Reading the book might be a good first start. Unfortunately the more of the assignment questions I read the more this looks like something I will not enjoy reading and is in fact 200 pages of Amir guiltily obsessing over some thing he did to or didn't do for some guy called Hassan.

I have chapters 1 - 20 and all the assignments there in due tommorrow cause I was out a couple of times over the last two weeks.

Sapphire Rode - Mission Control ===> Airship

Sapphire took another sip of her tea. She'd seen the slight shift Shiro's body had made in the other direction when she spoke. As though his first instinct on seeing her was to run in the other direction. It didn't really surprise her, it wasn't like anyone on her team was particularly fond of her company.

When Shiro asked about Abel Sapphire simply shrugged. When she'd gotten up this morning all three of her teammates were still fast asleep albeit only for another hour or so. After she'd showered, gone for a run and eaten breakfast Sapphire had returned to the dorm to find all three bunks empty. She'd just assumed Abel had been on his way to this location. Not finding him here Sapphire couldn't think were he might have gone. The best she could guess was that he was picking up some last minute supplies.

Seconds later Abel himself came running into the room stopping suddenly his breath coming in huge gasps. Speak of the devil. Wherever he'd been clearly he'd had to rush to get over here. It was a little sloppier than Sapphire was accustomed to seeing from him but everyone had there off days. She just hoped that this would be the only misstep he made today. "Abel, nice of you to finally join us. I believe the airship is waiting to take us to Trawl." Sapphire boarded the airship and once the rest of Swansong were present the all clear was given for the ship to take off.

Once in the air Sapphire opened her bag and fished around in it. Finally finding what she was looking for Sapphire pulled out a bag with three sets of earplugs in them. One of them was high grad and electronic, meant block out all sound when it was turned on. The other two were of simpler make and generally just served to blanket noise. She pulled out the first pair and shoved it into her pocket then handed the other two to Abel and Shiro. She didn't have a pair for Gren given that when she'd bought these they had been intended just for her. Having two backups was a little excessive but a necessary precaution. Having three was simply redundant. It likely didn't matter though since Gren's helmet more than likely had some sort of sound dampening function. "These are for when we get within vocal range of the Siren. They are relatively weak Grimm but their song has an enticing effect that is more than dangerous. I can't say for sure those will protect you but they should at the very least help."

Sapphire glanced out the window at the terrain falling away below them. She liked heights. They made her feel alive and free, like all her problems were the size of the people far below her. Knowing however that her problems were a lot more present than that Sapphire turned back to her team. "They's something else. This mission takes place on the oceanside and we're fighting an aquatic Grimm so I feel there's something you should know. I'm Aquaphobic, I have a deep seated fear of swimming and drowning." Sapphire took a breath, she could look a horde of Grimm in the face and smile but talking about herself that was truly frightening to her. "There may come a time when I'll be incapacitated by this or unable to continue the mission with you, should that happen I'm putting Abel in charge."

There were a number of reasons for this. Very few of them had to do with Abel himself. Shiro Sapphire knew full well did not have the presence of mind to direct an entire team. He was too affected by the emotions and opinions of those around him. He'd more than likely just end up doing whatever someone else told him to. Abel was Sapphire's partner and that counted for something but the real reason that Sapphire chose him over Gren was that she had very little trust for the boar faunus, he seemed to have a lack of concern for the safety of the rest of the team. At the end of their last mission she'd quite literally had blood dripping down her shoulders and still had to argue with him about finding Pops' secondary computer.

Speaking of Pops the other thing that worried Sapphire was about the man himself. After speaking to Ozpin about the boy with the Embodiment tattoo Sapphire had contacted the Vale police department in the hopes of getting a one on one with Pops. The only problem was that the bear faunus was nowhere to be found. Apparently he'd vanished from his cell, the cameras had gone dead and he'd disappeared while one of the guards was on break and the others were in the middle of a shift change. A perfect disappearing act that the police were keeping quiet. Of course Sapphire didn't have any reason to assume that Gren was involved with this but every time she thought about it her mind just went back to those few minutes he'd talked the team into letting him spend alone with Pops and how adamant he'd been about the research not falling into the wrong hands. She had no proof even linking the two together but it still nagged at her. She didn't have much faith in Gren and certainly not enough to sign over her role as leader even temporarily.

Having given this announcement Sapphire looked back out the window waiting, or more accurately expecting someone to raise an objection to her choice.

Diamond's Death

Mood music

The snow was falling and the forest that has become the eastern quarter of Vale was at peace. The spiky glacier towering over the scenery a silent monument to the successor of Mountain glenn in the title of the world’s greatest tomb.

The silence was disturbed as two figures walked with some difficulty through the foot deep snow that never seemed to stop falling in this place. None of them spoke a word, until they arrived to a line of gravestones, weathered down by the weather. They walked along the perimeter they created until they reached the one they were looking for.

“Passive aggressive even beyond the grave.” he said, taking in the sight of the mountain of ice in front of him. “Well, kind of looks like one. At least you got your last wish. How many of us can claim that?” Wiping a tear of mixed mirth and sorrow, the older visitor laid a wreath at the foot of the tombstone, along with a pack of smokes and a lighter. Looking up to the sky, he smiled: “Don’t look at me like that, it’s Friday morning!”

The younger person - a twelve year old, with the same blond mane as the man next to her but with blue eyes followed, laying a bouquet of white flowers next to the other items and lighting a candle. “You never told me how mom died.” It was not a question, but there was a burning need of an answer in the child’s tone.

The man pulled the girl into an embrace. “It’s not easy to talk about, Sora. Even after 10 years… but you deserve to know.” he sighed, looking back at the glacier, gathering his thoughts for a while.

“It was one of the worst winters I remember. The whole kingdom was short on just about everything. You could see it on the street, everyone looking under the weather, the pubs she liked deserted, and those unlucky to have been caught outside through the night freezing to death or just disappearing. But worst of all, it had the hunters weak, running on half a tank. And with everyone being angsty about the situation… They could feel we were weak.”

“It was late evening, seventh day of the twelfth cycle. You were asleep in your bed, and I was passed out on the floor next to you, having read you a fairy tale and ending up lulling myself to sleep as well. When Diamond woke me up, I knew something was horribly wrong. I didn’t see that look on her face since first year at Beacon. The concern, the… fear.”

“The grimm have arrived En masse. It was like a siege. The hunters on the walls were getting torn apart, and needed all the help they could get. So Mom told me to fetch my gear and get ready to head out.” he paused in thought, “I think she knew just how bad it was - that we might not return. She never parted with her hat, but that night, she gave it to you as she was kissing you goodbye while you slept.”

“When we arrived, I realized just how terrible things were going. There were hordes of grimm, even the big ones! We started fighting back alongside the others, but soon we were separated. The last message I got from her was that there was trouble on the east wall and that she was headed there.”

“Once I turned around and looked, the Goliaths have already breached the wall. That was it. With a hole in the wall, there was nothing to stop them from slaughtering all of us. I… I dropped everything, and I ran to get her. But the police had the area on the lockdown, evacuating everyone they could as the Grimm flooded in. I tried getting past them, but they were right, whoever was there was already lost. So I gone back to you. If I couldn’t help mom, I was going to make damn sure I got my daughter out of here.”

“When I had the necessities packed and you tucked safely in the harness, I was just about to head to the airport where the evacuation ships were, praying Diamond would make it there somehow, but then… then the strangest thing happened. The blasted snow that covered most of Vale up and vanished, flying eastwards. And suddenly, the sirens stopped whining. The snow turned into that glacier, sealing the hole in the wall and entombing hundreds of Grimm within it. I knew then - that she has met her end. It would take enough dust to last someone a lifetime to cast a spell like that… and only people that had it implanted usually carried that much on their persons. But, to summon such a spell would have left her body torn to shreds, even if she escaped its effect.”

The girl fell silent as the story unfolded, but she now looked like she would break, tears gathering in her eyes. “I… I can’t even remember her face!” she cried, burying her face in the crook of her father’s embrace. He reached up, gently running his hand through her hair, calming her down. “I don’t think she would be mad at you for that.” he smiled, looking the girl in the eyes, the same blue as her mother’s, “You were her everything. And she was like that - whenever someone she held dear was threatened, she would go to their defense, without any regard to the cost to herself. She had to fight in the middle of that Grimm Eclipse for half an hour, and I believe she never took a step back. She would slay the demons and hold her ground in her stubborn nobility, taunt them because she would never let them lay a claw on her baby. She would have held on, because you were here, and you were not safe, and she would look magnificent through it all. But in the end, even the greatest hunters can only last this long.”

Fishing a handkerchief from his pocket, he dried the girl’s tears. His own voice was starting to break, the glitter of tears present in the corners of his eyes. “It doesn’t matter that you can’t recall her - you were too young. But as long as you keep her in your heart, live your life and be happy, then I know her only regret would be that she couldn’t be here to watch you grow up.” she smiled as they pulled close again, just holding on looking for comfort in each other.

They whispered their goodbyes, and left their mother/lover resting in her icy tomb.
