As a background character he's totally acceptable, but two things:
Background characters are just for spicing up the plot, they can't help in combat.
They do not affect the area around them. Example: A god of fire would not make the battleground hot wherever they are.

I created Kanitah and sat down to think about who would be the exact perfect match up for him.
Did the math, ran some numbers, and Fury is the perfect compliment for a fight with Kanitah.
