As he observed the cat more closely, it almost seemed like it knew the boy it was rubbing up against. Maybe it wasn't as stray as he originally thought. Either that, or this kid was exceptionally good with cats. Upon further inspection to the small group that had gathered around, he recognized the two boys, and a third girl who had begun approaching. They were his classmates. He hadn't exactly been able to put names to faces, but he heard a "Hoshino-san" from the girl, presumably Hoshino was the one the cat was rubbing up to.

Now that the novelty of a cat had begun to wear off, Genki remembered that he needed to finish up those posters. He was about to say something, when this supposed Hoshino began muttering to the cat. He sounded... angry. He even had a grip on the cat's head. Guess he must not like cats after all. Or maybe he found cat shit in one of his shoes. That'd piss just about anyone off.

Well, whatever. It was time to get back to work. Or at least it would've been, if he hadn't heard a shout and a brush at his leg. He turned to see the cat had taken off towards the gym, tugging a pair of shoes behind it. Were those...

Before he could finish the thought, Hoshino had taken off towards the cat. Yep, those were his shoes. Though it left one behind as it ran past the gym doors. Running through a gym full of broken glass didn't exactly seem like the best idea, but Hoshino and the redhead took off anyways. As funny as it would be to watch them go traipsing around a gym full of shattered mirrors, Genki decided it would be better to just put the rest of the posters up and head home.

Yet out of the corner of his eye he spotted something blue moving about in the air. It was a butterfly. That's strange. First a cat and now a butterfly? What else was in there, a monkey? Although, he couldn't help be feel a little strange upon seeing the butterfly. Nobody else seemed to care about it, or, at least nobody he could see. It also felt like he'd seen this butterfly before. But where? It was on the tip of his metaphorical tongue, but he couldn't quite place where he had seen it.

Not a moment later, the butterfly returned to the gym, almost as if it was on a predetermined path. Well, this certainly piqued his interest. What other zoological wonder were inside of said gym? Surely just a quick look couldn't hurt.

Heading to the gym doors, he stepped inside and looked around. Yeah, there were certainly a bunch of broken mirrors in there. And Hoshino harassing the cat, though at this point it was pretty deserved. He also noticed that there were now two Butterflies, not just the one. And the air felt... strangely cold, like the AC was on full blast, but only in this room. He heard a voice beside him. It was the redheaded boy. Something about getting in trouble. "Given the fact that a cat stole someone's shoe, we could probably get away with just saying we were playing the good samaritan in helping get our fellow student's possession back. Besides, getting chewed out is totally worth watching this guy dance around after a cat."

Genki snapped back to reality as the bells began to toll, signaling the end of the day. Was it really over already? He guessed that when your brain is set on autopilot for a mostly monotonous lecture, it was bound to happen. It was only the second day after all. Nothing quite so special yet. But what was special was the apparent rainstorm. After the students funneled out of the classroom, he stepped over to the window to look outside. Yep, those were some full-looking rainclouds, there. At least it was just a rainstorm and not a full on thunderstorm. A little rain never hurt, but galeforce winds and lightning strikes certainly could.

As he exited the room and headed down the hall towards the stairs, Genki suddenly remembered the Cooking Club. They had apparently canceled today due to the weather, but Genki wasn't even sure they had enough members yet. He then remembered the posters, and how there were very few on the first floor. Maybe he should talk to Linda about that.

No longer dreading the flight of stairs, Genki's ascent was significantly less dramatic and tiring. Upon reaching the top, he looked for the room to the club, which, thankfully, had the door open, and the various cooking equipment was on full display, allowing for easy identification. He could just see Linda behind the frame of the door. She appeared to be holding several papers.

From the short conversation he had with her, apparently she found out the hard way yesterday that the first was nearly bereft of posters, and the second floor wasn't too well off either. Eventually Genki decided it would make a good impression if he were to help out, and he offered to get the first floor and she could get the second floor. Linda accepted quickly, and handed him half a dozen posters. Now to make the trip back down.

Fortunately, going down the stairs isn't nearly as difficult as going up them. He then remembered something about the gym. It had been closed off, and people started making dumb rumors like a ghost was haunting the place, or they had trapped a cat in there. Who traps a cat in a gymnasium? The thing would probably get itself killed. From what he had heard, a bunch of mirrors broke in there and they were waiting for a cleaning crew to come clean it up professionally. That certainly sounded the most realistic, but why did they have a bunch of mirrors in there in the first place? Whatever.

Reaching the bottom of the stairs, he took an immediate left, towards a few of the other posters, found a nice blank space, and slapped a poster on the wall, next to the others, but just far enough to make it stand out. He continued down the hall to the very end, looking for some prime real estate for a poster. Finding another open spot, he stuck another poster on the wall. Two down, four to go. He turned around and headed towards the opposite end of the hall.

Upon reaching the center of the hall, near the stairs and lockers. And the gym. As he turned towards the locker, he quickly realized there was little space for a poster there. But he also saw two boys playing with something. The short redheaded boy seemed to be playing with something moving, while the boy in the hoodie watched. Upon moving closer, a loud meow revealed the thing there were messing with was a cat! "Oh shit, a cat. Did they really have one in the gym?" Genki set the four remaining posters on top of the lockers for the moment. And stepped over to the cat and the boys. He looked down at the cat. "You think it belongs to someone? I don't see a collar, but I don't know many cats that like wearing one."

Three days a week, starting on Tuesdays. Well that certainly seemed like a good enough deal to him. Learn to cook and get out of housework? Not to mention the supposed free food. Hopefully their first dish would be something simple like egg-fried rice. Mmm... egg-fried rice... Genki blinked twice as he suddenly snapped back to reality, realizing he didn't quite hear the ending of Linda's statement. But, being too afraid to ask what she said, Genki simply said "Got it." Genki raised his hand, making an "OK" sign with his fingers. "I'll see you later, then! Gotta get home and help out aroundthe house." and with a wave headed out the door. They both seemed nice enough. Maybe this would be better than he thought.

As Genki walked down the third floor halls, he reminded himself to look for recruitment posters. The third floor had plenty, just as many as anyone else's club. On the second floor, after a quick scout, revealed more, but less than there were upstairs, getting somewhat overshadowed by the other posters. And on the first floor, there were even less, once more being overshadowed. Guess they ran short on paper. Oh well. Maybe he'd mention something about it to Linda tomorrow. Swapping out his shoes at the entrance, he began tge walk home.

The walk home was as uneventful as it was short, and before he knew it, he found himself back at his grandparents house. The front door swung open on surprisingly well oiled hinges, something his grandfather was responsible for. He had always hated squeaky doors for some reason or another. At first, Genki was greeted only by his grandmother, who quickly revealed that his grandfather had gone out to get batteries for the smoke alarm. "Wait we have a smoke alarm? Since when?" Genki's grandmother laughed as she pointed to a spot above the cupboards, hidden out of plain view, to several wires sticking out of the wall, where tge smoke alarm was once attached. Apparently they had it for years. It was certainly news to him.

They both sat on the couch as Genki was asked to explain his first day. There wasn't too much that was special, other than the new auditorium and him joining the Cooking Club. He did his best to try to make the story somewhat interesting, though he began to think that his grandmother was merely asking out of politeness. A little awkward, but it wasn't anything unusual.

At last Genki's grandfather came through the door, clutching a half-eaten dorayaki and a case of batteries. Great, now Genki was hungry for dorayaki. Maybe they'd learn how to make them in the club? His grandfather would surely appreciate that. But, at the request of his grandfather, Genki would then go to help replace tge batteries of the smoke alarms hidden throughout the house. He had to say, some of then were hidden fairly well. Just out if sight, but easily accessible if you needed to get to it.

The rest of the day went by like many others. A couple of around-the-house chores, and a little TV in the living room quickly led to dinner time, which then transitioned to night, and eventually, bedtime. Going to sleep at ten was a lite earlier than Genki was used to, but he also needed to get up a little earlier too. Genki sighed as he crawled into bed thinking about tomorrow. Things were just getting started, and he had quite the journey ahead. Not only would he have to survive another school year, he'd have to do after school stuff as well. Though at least that part had the potential to be fun. At least Golden Week wasn't too far away. Genki then closed his eyes and let sleep take him.

So most of the club members were third years huh? Guess that made some sense. Just go to the club that's on the same floor, rather than run around the school. And it looked like there weren't too many participants for the club yet, but it was only the first day. "Well, hey, it's only the first day, I'm sure there'll be more people here soon. So anyways, Linda, what days are we meeting up on? I usually don't have too much going on, so I should be here most days."

Genki's eyes darted over to the only other person in the room as he talked. Kaito. He looked a little like himself. Granted, you could find a lot of brown haired boys that looked a little like him, Genki thought. He didn't exactly stand out. Another thing Genki noticed is that he looked almost... tired? Or he had some sort of freaky eyeliner going on. But to each his own, he supposed. He certainly wasn't the strongest looking person he'd ever seen.

Then there was Rin, er, Linda. She seemed nice enough, and seemed to enjoy what she was doing. Or rather, going to be doing. While Genki certainly had the thought to give a once-over of her appearance, he decided that would likely make a poor first impression. Though he'd have to say, she'd probably be able to rock a pair of vanity specs. Just seems like she would look better with glasses. Of course, he'd never say that out loud.

As his words winded down, during his second talking to with Linda, another thought crossed his mind: recruitment posters. He had seen several in the halls, but none of them seemed to be for the Cooking Club. Either his new associate Kaito really did forget to put them up, or they weren't very attention grabbing. He'd have to pay more attention on his way out for the posters, and maybe say something tomorrow if there was a lack of them.

Just as he finished speaking, he opened his mouth once more. "Oh! One more thing, how long does this last? My grandparents don't want me out too late. I guess they're afraid I'll join a gang or something. Either that or I'll eat without them." The gang part he'd never do, but as for eating without them, weeeelllll... There's a really nice takoyaki stall that comes around sometimes. He could certainly be convinced.

As the chimes signaling the end of the school day rang out across the school, a near immediate sense of liveliness began to manifest. Genki sat back in his chair as he waited for the flood of students to funnel through the door. He learned his lesson last year after trying to go with the swarm. After the initial torrent of students, Genki got up, grabbed his backpack, and headed through the door.

He debated heading straight home. He didn't really have much to do today, and he could probably spend the rest of the day goofing off. But on the other hand, his grandparents would probably just have him do a bunch of chores around the house, or worse, yardwork. Mowing the lawn was already going to be a bitch and a half, the last thing he wanted to do was spend time pulling weeds or watering plants. He could think of only one way to avoid such a fate: after school activities.

Thinking back to earlier in the day, he recalled his standing on the clubs. Occult was a big no-no. The prospect of learning to play an instrument in the music club was certainly tempting, but the loud noise at school would drive him mad, and the practice at home would likely do the same to his grandparents. Sports... no. Then there was the Cooking Club. All things considered, it didn't seem that bad. It would be a nice life skill to have, and eating good food is never a bad thing. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea. He pulled out his phone and sent a quick message to his grandparents.

"Going to check out a club for after school stuff. Going to be late getting home." He received a text back from his grandfather almost immediately. "ok". Genki sighed before whispering to himself. "Not even capitalized. At least he was quick about it." Another ping alerted him to a text from his grandmother. "Be sure to tell us all about it when you get home!" At least she seemed somewhat excited about it. Probably glad that he was doing something other than lazing about.

Not knowing where the Cooking Club was, he descended the stairs to the first floor to look at the map containing the layout of the school, likely for first year students, and probably to clarify things after the renovations. Looks like the Cooking Club meets on the... third floor. Genki's shoulders slumper forward. "[Ah, fuck,] I'm going to have climb all those stairs again aren't I?" Was it really worth it? To climb the seven thousand steps to the third floor after climbing all the way down? Well, just about anything was better than menial chores and yard work back home. It was time to make the trip.

After the most arduous minute and twenty three seconds of his life, Genki's foot hit the final step, and he found himself at the third floor. "Guh... I am not looking forward to being a third year." He approached the room to the Cooking Club and looked inside. It certainly looked like a place to do cooking given all the equipment laying around. One girl looked significantly more like she knew what she was doing. She even had an apron on. He took a few quick steps towards her. "Uh... are you the Cooking Club leader? I was looking to join up. This'll be my first time joining a club, and this one seemed pretty good compared to some of the others. My name's Mori, Genki, but I usually go by Genki."

Genki slid down with his finger on the top of his phone. Looks like the assembly was about to start, he'd better get inside to find somewhere to sit in the gym. Luckily the entrance and the gymnasium were but a hop, skip, and jump away, and Genki made it there with plenty of time to spare. Striding over to the nearest seat he could find, he sat down amongst the masses, and listened to the announcement.

The beginning was exactly as you'd expect. Teachers praising the school for this and that, what their hopes would be for the school year, which Genki was pretty sure at least one of the teachers repeated word for word what they said last year. There was also the renovations to the school. Genki didn't really notice much difference, other than the occasional fresh coat of paint. But there was also a new auditorium, where gatherings like this would be taking place instead. All in all though it was just as boring as last year.

Then there was the Student Council President. Maybe she'd have something interesting to say? Some new after school clubs? A change in school codes what with all the disappearances? It took all but three sentences before Genki was rolling his eyes. It was just one of those boring speeches that was supposed to inspire the students. He'd heard speeches like this a thousand times before, all of them with the same "We'll fight the challenges ahead together!" Or "I'm so excited to start this year and see you all grow!" You want to give a speech to a bunch of students? Tell them the year is basically going to be like last year but faster. At least that way they'll know what they're in for. The one interesting thing was the talk of the disappearing students, though it was kind of old news to Genki at this point. It happened 5 months ago, not yesterday for God's sake. But, fortunately, that was the end, and they could all retreat to their classrooms.

A quick look at the board by the gym told Genki exactly where to go. The classroom wasn't too far, only being on the second floor. Next year was probably going to be a bitch and a half walking up all those stairs. But that wasna future Genki problem. Going up the stairs and around the corner, Genki found himself in his classroom. It looked... exactly the same as his first year classroom, the only difference being that the dry erase board had a smartboard in the middle of it.

Stepping in, he picked the first desk he saw and hopped in its seat. It was right in the front corner of the room, closest to the door. Not quite his first choice, but at least here he'd likely be first to leave, and being so close to the door meant he had another thirty seconds or so to screw around before class. And he wouldn't have to walk through rows of people every time he wanted to get up. This did also mean that he couldn't exactly slack off in class, unless he got to be really good friends with his teachers. He learned back in his chair and stared up at the ceiling. This was going to be a long adjustment after all the time off.

6:30 A.M.

It was a bit earlier than what poor old Genki was used to when waking up. Not for his grandparents, however. They'd already been up for over half an hour. It it was those same grandparents who had just woken up Genki, to get him ready for school. There was no alarm clock per se, but a polite knock at the door telling him to wake up, and that breakfast would be ready by the time he was done showering. Guess it was shower time.

Like most people in the morning, Genki spent very little time actually getting clean and more or less spent fifteen minutes enjoying the hot water before taking the time to wash up.

As soon as he stepped out of the shower, his nose could immediately detect what was for breakfast: Egg fried rice, and his favorite: Hotate. Seared Scallops have always been a favorite of his, but there's something about the way his grandfather made them that made them stand out. Genki's best guess is what he fried it in, but his grandparents wouldn't ever tell him. Maybe it was something weird like orange juice. Probably not though.

After getting dressed, eating, and getting everything all packed up for school, he checked the clock one last time before heading out. 7:30. If all went well he would only need about twenty minutes to actually walk to school, leaving him plenty of time to screw around before school started. Maybe he'd stand around awkwardly for half an hour, maybe he'd get harassed by someone for no good reason, or, maybe he'd actually find somebody decent to talk to.

Heading out the door and down the street, Genki let his mind wander concerning the future school year. There's all sorts of sports teams he could join. Or maybe of the other clubs that required much less physical activity. Yeah, that sounded way better. He didn't exactly pay attention to the clubs last year, but he remembered a few that stuck out. First was the Culinary Club, or was it the Cooking Club? Whatever. But he distinctly remembered it always smelled real good every time he passed by. Learning how to cook is certainly a useful skill, and maybe he could help his grandparents with dinner, and figure out the secrets behind his grandfather's Seared Scallops. Then there was the Music Club. Genki remembered this not because he was interested in music, but because they had a big brass section and were loud as hell. And that's from a distance away, he couldn't imagine just how loud it would be actually *being in there*. So that was probably a no-go. Lastly, he could remember an Occult Club, but the only reason he even knew about it was because of a *very* attractive purple haired girl. She had a few tattoos and kinda freaked him out, but it was also kinda hot. Though there might not even be an Occult Club this year, and Genki didn't know what year she was. She could've graduated for all he knew.

But before he knew it, he had arrived at the gates of the school. It was the start of the new year, so they'd probably have some sort of assembly at the beginning of the day, much like last year. For now though, there wasn't much left to do, but to sit back and wait for the day to start. He didn't see any of his friends around, so maybe if he stood around long enough, one of them would recognize him. Either that or somebody else would try to talk to him. Genki pulled out his phone and began playing a new game he recently downloaded: Crusader's Quest. It was a fairly simple MMORPG that involved matching blocks as they appeared at the bottom of the screen, and the community seemed pretty active, too. Time to waste some time.

For future reference, here's how I'll be handling Genki's languages.
Something like "Hello, my name is Mori, Genki, but I go by my first name, Genki." is all in Japanese.
However, text in [brackets] are meant to signify speaking in Chinese. So "[Hello, my name is Mori, Genki, but I go by my first name, Genki.]" would be him speaking entirely in Chinese.
Though more often than not, it would just be a word or two, such as
"[Hello], my name is Mori, Genki, but I go by my first name, Genki." Common words like [Hello], which is Ni Hao some characters probably could recognize.
