I was thinking something more along the lines of him finding Diana lying on the ground (Ded or otherwise) and basically attempts to avenge her in a blind rage and ends up with the 24k Au optical sensors of destruction.

That very well may be the case, but you have failed to account for one thing: The fact that Bastion, essentially being the deadpan Hamlet of the story, would likely launch into an aside upon the defeat of Diana, leaving her back exposed to a pointy chiropractor.
