John nodded and muttered “it would be a big blaze...historical...” he looked at Kay and asked “when exactly did she go missing? What year? A being like her dying would have had a huge fire to mark it. Enough that a lot of people would have noticed”

Serena nodded and added “if we can see if and when a huge fire was, and where, we could get some clues. I can read shadows in locations as long as the stuff there has been there long enough”

Bane rubbed his head and said “I wasn’t scamming...she asked for directions. You can’t tell a newbie in town how to get somewhere in the heart of the city. It’s way easier just to take them there...” scarlet looked at the girl and muttered softly “the only problem is her voice...they look a lot a like...but not the voice...”

Scarlet looked at Hector and said “I am in need of a hand around here. Myles was helping till his mother got sick...it’s just been me during the busy hours. If she can clean and help cook I’d hire her” Bane leaned to Hector and muttered “my contact never showed at the docks...I think they were delayed. I need a better place to set up the met”

Bane waved his hand at her and said “no offense...just didn’t want to see you get grabbed. A lot of that happening lately...Hector, the owner of the that pet shop? Her daughter was taken a few days ago...I don’t think the officials heard about it. Can you send it up the message chain?”

Midnight saw her shadow find a lead and she jumped up and said “the time of rest is not now, not while those souls are waiting for rescue. Come, we are on the hunt” she ran after the shadow, Fenrir following at her heels.

They went all thru the city till they came to the work center of the city and she was not liking where this was going. The slums made no sense. The officials had searched here a million times. And a lot of those taken had been taken from this area. She felt his hand on her shoulder and she nodded.

Then the shots rang out. He moved before she could which she was thankful for. She took a step back then cracked her neck. “Not yet. These attackers might have information...time to weed them out...” she moved her hand and the shadows around them started to move and take shape. After a moment four huge wolves stood by Fenrir and she said “fetch boys...”

The wolves took off in the direction of the shots, lady midnight standing tall now and lifting a shadow to block the next volley. “This is not the rebels...this proves it. We need to get eyes on one of the...” she suddenly gasped, holding her chest. Pain racked thru her. One of the wolves must have been hit with magic. She lowered her head, trying to push the pain back.

Then her eyes glowed silver and said softly “hunt as a pack...one of you has found a target...” they heard yelling and barking, then she gasped again and took a step backward, the pain getting worse. Then the yelling stopped and Fenrir barked.

She was panting and looked up at the lord next to her. “Fenrir caught one...”

Serena frowned and said “I’m not sure...I can read shadows but only of the living and objects...” John rubbed his chin and said “we could find the reports...maybe use some magic along the way...have to be careful with magic dealing with seeing the past. It can be a little tricky”

Serena looked at Kay and said “did you ever see her body?”

Not worries, I’m off and on cause I had my second COVID shot yesterday and the side affects are hitting me hard today

John ate slowly as Serena found the spreads and set them on the table. He looked up and said “kinda. There is more to that shadows watching over the bird of life thing. I found reports of huge fires in places that were random, but the night seemed to swallow them up? Sound familiar?” Serena looked up and said “you think Kay’s mother had a shadow watching over her too?”

John leaned back and nodded. “Yes...I think it’s a partnership as old as time by the looks of it”

John sat at the table and said “I think eight hours? I’m not really sure these days...is the tea on?” Serena walked over and set the mug in front of him then looked at Kay. “Like a puppy. And your welcome. They are my eyes and ears when I’m awake, but they are good for sensing danger if I’m asleep.” She set the food on the table and said “dig in while they are warm. I think i saw some nut spreads around here somewhere...”

She went back to look and John looked at Kay, “I’m alright. Just a nightmare about the mistakes I’ve made in the past...nothing to worry about...”

John stirred worse then when her voice hit his ears he shot up, breathing hard and looking around wildly. He saw Kay and sighed, rubbing his face. “Thanks love...wha time is it...” Serena walked in and frowned. “It’s time for breakfast, come on you two. John? Is Chas coming in? Should I save some for him?”

John stood up and said “he has a shift this morning, but I’m sure he would love some food when he comes in later”

Serena stopped and turned around, then smiled at her. “Sorry, I have the song stuck in my head. I was never good at getting them out...I am almost done. Just need to cut up some fruit. You want to check on the master of the dark arts? I think I heard him snoring in the other room...” she smiled and waved her hand, her shadows moving and grabbing a knife and fruit, starting to cut it up. She had better control since she had gotten better rest.

John grunted in his sleep, a nightmare starting to form. A demons seal, a little girl crying out, John being slammed against a wall of fire.

Serena was making crepes and dipping sauces, humming turning into the song 'Can't Stop the Moonlight' and she started dancing around the kitchen, her eyes closed as she did. She was dancing around happily when she heard steps behind her but she didn't stop, flipping the crepes in the pan and singing more.

John was still passed out in the work room, snoring louder as he turned his head.

John had tried to work all night but he didn’t last and was passed out in the chair by the desk, snoring softly. Serena had woken up and was slowly getting up, changing and moving to the door to see if anyone else was awake. Then she stepped out and headed to the kitchen, planning on making breakfast. She didn’t see John so she started to make pancakes, humming to herself.
