Anemia sucks. I feel like there's an invisible vampire sucking my energy through a straw.

Another (sort of) NPC lurks!

Simon said After she had started to walk away he waited 5 seconds and decided to follow her, it seemed better than waiting for any more of those rodents or even potentially worse ... threats.

The old woman had turned her back on the lantern and the ticking tree, and she shuffled resolutely into the woods without a backward glance. There was no path -- only damp roots and mossy stones and cobwebs on the trees -- but she knew exactly where she was going.

After a few moments of walking in the woods, the red light of the lantern behind them was blocked by leaves and branches. Everything was suddenly very dark, until Simon would barely be able to see his hand in front of his face, let alone the stones and roots that threatened to trip him.

"If you don't want to be eaten," Yurei snapped from the darkness in front of him, "you had best hold onto my shawl. Keep a good grip. It'll only get darker and I won't carry you."

The darkness enveloped them both. The sounds of the forest teemed all around them: rustling leaves, chittering squirrels, screeching, croaking, buzzing, scratching. Yurei led Simon on over rocky ground, around trees, down small inclines, through mud and bramble. She was blind: she never needed to see where she was going. To Simon, however, all of it was darkness.

Something moved near his right arm. It was only a faint brushing sound, but in the darkness Simon might sense that something big and alive was walking just behind him.

A warm breath tickled the back of Simon's neck. It smelled like rotting flesh.

Yay new rune! Glad you like it. :D

Thanks Thundercat! :3

Arin is . . . well, no, I can't answer that question just yet. ;)

Edit: I'm currently mucking around with the graphics. Photobucket should update sometime between now and tonight, and all the graphics should switch over to a new version at that time. Why are there new versions of the runes? Because I felt like messing with GIMP. If the graphics aren't updating for you yet, you can check them out on the first post of the OOC.

Edit again: I've also moved inactive people to a Limbo section, to avoid making a mess when people move around among the teams. Being in Limbo just means you're in-between teams while you're away. Post again in OOC when you return and I'll write you into one of the teams.

I plan to post a bit more often from now on, and I'll be adhering to the two-day rule. If you're skipped over, don't despair! Just post when you can, or make a note in OOC so I can write in your return.

Not to triple-post, but Blue team! You may have noticed the addition of a different-looking rune. Seeing as Arin has stolen the blue lantern, you can't very well be blue team anymore, unfortunately.

This will be your new rune for the time being, until/unless you find a lantern to attach to. ;)

A wild NPC appears!

Randold, Anise, Hania

The water mirrored the drifting lights of the fireflies.

Silence pressed all around them, and so did the darkness. All Randold, Anise and Hania could see of one another were tiny flashes of yellow light against their skin.

For a long while, there was nothing but calm, quiet stillness.

They sat on a rocky ledge beside the edge of the water. In the darkness, they could not possibly see that there was a hallway beside them that led deep into the cavern wall -- until a faint yellow glow appeared within it.

It might have been a firefly, at first. The glowing light was constant, though, and continued to grow bigger and brighter, as if it were moving slowly toward them.

After a few moments, the glow was close enough that they might see that the hallway within its light glistened with streaks of precious stone.

After a few more moments, it became clear that the light was not moving on its own, but was being carried. The yellow light illuminated a strange animal-like mask with pointed rabbit-ears, draped by waves of long brown hair.

The person wearing the mask appeared to be a scrawny boy of about Hania's age. His gray clothing was thin and simple, and his bare feet made a quiet slapping sound on the cool stone floor as he approached the water. He held the glowing ball of light in his long fingers.

When he was a few yards away, the yellow light fell upon Randold, Ania and Anise. The boy noticed them, and he stopped, his head raised. He shifted from one foot to the other, uncertain whether he should approach or run.
I kinda left it in the air, since it still would feel kind of like godmodding if I assume the engines get started -- but I'd like to think the ship should be on its way. :)

Assuming Simnia didn't do much damage to the engine (I sort of imagine since the train and the airship were designed by essentially the same people, she might learn quickly) I'd vote to go straight to Braelv.
Well, it looked as if no one was going to help her after all. Still, Simnia lingered in the hallway, at the same time determined to get this ship and everyone on it as far away from the dock as possible, and unwilling to take the full weight of responsibility on her shoulders. But!

She rolled up her sleeves, took a deep breath, and stomped her way down the hall. She would do it! She would move the ship!

But who was steering?

The thought occurred to her just as she entered the engine room and looked up at the walls of pipes and gaskets. Even if she made the ship move, was the captain ready at the helm? Could the captain even drive this thing? What if she launched the ship right into a mountain?

"Argh! Get ahold of yourself!" she hollered to the empty room, and with thoughts of those injured comrades whose well-being now rested in her hands, Simnia followed the lines of piping with her eyes. She ran to the back of the room, found the rotors and the steam tanks, and when she turned a crank the room began to heat up. Steam! They needed more steam! Just like the train engines, after all.

The pipes began to clink and hiss. Simnia increased the heat, found another steam tank and turned that on as well with a spin of a wheel. This was easier than she'd expected! In her confidence, she rushed to another part of the room and yanked on a lever -- and metal all around her began to groan and strain. That wasn't a good sound.

"Uuhh . . ." The dwarf's eyes widened and she put the lever back to the original position -- apparently it didn't do what she thought it did -- but the groaning didn't stop. Was it supposed to do that? But slowly the odd sound stopped, replaced with the familiar hiss of steam, and Simnia ran to find the switches that would turn on the engines.

They were labeled with words she couldn't read.

A string of eloquent curses issued from her mouth, while steam hissed and the room grew hotter. She thought about going back to find someone who could read, but a part of her knew that any second those bandits could come crashing in and killing everyone onboard. So, she chose the switches in a highly scientific way:

"Eeny meeny miney moe . . ."

She flipped a switch, then another, and yanked on another lever . . . and held her breath.

Hokay guys, tomorrow (if my brain works correctly) I plan to post for all teams. If anyone gets left a bit behind, just post here when you're ready to write and I will surely write in an opening for your return.
Aww poor Kori. You're welcome to come help Simnia break the engines!

Speaking of which, Northern and Deth, I went and got myself into a situation and I'm not sure how to proceed. x3 Shall I make something up about how the engines work? Maybe just some blanket statements about wheels and knobs and levers, some steam and gears, lots of guesswork and trouble and nearly breaking things, and we're off! ... ?
