Anemia sucks. I feel like there's an invisible vampire sucking my energy through a straw.

He was too distracted by the miracle she had performed on his wound to hear what she was saying. The pain was gone. Carefully, he touched his fingers to the bloodsoaked gash in his shirt, and felt the new skin beneath it. When his hand returned clean of blood, he opened the hole in his clothing a bit more, to see for himself that she had completely healed his injury. Not even a scar marked his skin.

His eyes lifted to hers, and he scrambled to his feet. "You know who I am," he said confidently, with a small smirk of pride that he'd figured her out. "You're part of the resistance. How many of you are there? A hundred? More?"

Of course, it made perfect sense! She had recognized him as the prince of Ysai, and had rescued him in order to assist him in the coming war.

Thunder rumbled again. He peered down into the streets, where the guards were moving quicker. "They'll scatter with the rain," he said in mockery of their childish fear of the storm, confident now that he was so certain that Solaria would take him to the rest of the resistance -- the beginnings of his new army.
"It's fine," he grumbled irritably, but he allowed her to take his arm and to see the deep gash left in his ribs by a passing arrow. Her careful demeanor and the quiet concern of her voice had convinced him that she wasn't here to take him to the chopping block -- or to eat him, whatever people with wings did with strangers they had abducted off the street. He decided he wouldn't cause a scene by refusing her.

He glanced over the edge of the roof, to where a guard had just checked and abandoned the alley just below -- but his alert focus was on her every movement.

"You have already helped me," he told her in a solemn voice -- and then, in a lower mutter, ". . . whatever you are."
The sudden appearance of a woman so close to him gave Raln a start -- his immediate assumption was that she was one of the guards, or at least in league with the king that wanted him dead. He was about to attack her and push her to the ground when he was stopped by the flutter and rush of black wings.

Wings?

In a lurching swirl of wind, his feet left the ground. Raln made a shocked choking noise and clung to her feverishly, his wide eyes watching the ground fall out from under them.

By the time his feet were again on something solid, Raln was soaked in a cold panicked sweat. He crouched low on the rooftop, grasping it and sucking in deep breaths. He didn't usually have a problem with heights -- but being suddenly whisked into the sky was not something he'd ever expected to endure.

His eyes snapped to her face as she drew close again. With a scowl he shifted away, his arm pressed into the wound on his chest, protective. He still didn't know her motive. "Who are you?" What are you might have been the more appropriate question.

Below, the guards' shouts echoed up from the alleys. They spread out among the narrow streets, running like ants in a maze.
Thunder rolled over the City of the Valley.

Raln paused in the street and looked up between the stone towers, to the sky that billowed with darkening clouds. Blood soaked his shirt, and he held one injured arm close to his chest. His clothing was too conspicuous: the crest and blue-black of the Kingdom of Ysai -- otherwise known as the Kingdom of Lightning -- which had been invaded, conquered and destroyed only a few weeks ago.

An arrow whizzed by his shoulder. Immediately Raln dove into a narrow passageway, pursued by the King's Guard of the City of the Valley. He had come here seeking allies and soldiers. Instead he had found only betrayal. He had escaped the city castle only by luck, but it seemed unlikely now that he'd make it past the walls alive.

Raln kept an eye on the clouds as he ducked among the streets, running from the very people he had come here to recruit to his cause. He needed to get higher.
OOC post. Hello!
I'm dusting this off after 2 years (!!) because I've hit a creative wall and a new 1x1 to look forward to tends to solve the problem. It's been a long while since I've properly played a fresh character. So, here we go!

How My RPs Tend to Go

ORIGINAL, DYNAMIC CHARACTERS
The fastest way to frustrate me is to give me a mushy character. If I have to work my ass off to get your character to have a slightly entertaining reaction to something -- if it takes an apocalypse to phase them, if they're eternally lighthearted or moody or stoic with very little range of emotion -- I'm sorry but I'm out.

Give me the hotheads and the irrational personalities. Give me the characters who live in the moment, who are present in the world, who act upon and react to it. Give me characters who can be happy and sad and pissed off and determined and terrified and proud.

Here are a few of my favorite character tropes to play (I'll make a new character for each RP):

  • The Scowler: He's angry and cynical and he tells the truth when you don't want to hear it. Generally solves problems with loud threats and violence. Has a fragile pride. Answers questions honestly, but will never be the first to offer information about himself.
  • The Smiler: He never stops smiling. Never takes anything seriously and always finds the bright side of every situation. Will eagerly volunteer to take on hardships for the sake of others. Limitless energy. Insecure. A skilled liar.
  • The Trickster: She will go to great lengths to embarrass or sabotage people she doesn't like. Has no qualms about stealing, fighting or generally acting and speaking crudely. Her big mouth gets her into trouble.
  • The Investigator: She must know and explore everything. Will stick her nose in everywhere it does not belong and will trespass recklessly. Often does not realize the extent of danger she's in until it's too late to turn back. Creative with lies and escape routes.

PARAGRAPHS 'N GRAMMAR
I'm actually a lot better at forgiving poor spelling and grammar now than I once was -- I understand that very intelligent and highly creative people may not always have an expert writing style -- but if I can't understand what you mean or you give me nothing to go on, I'm going to have trouble. I like to put time and thought into my posts, and I hope you'll do the same. :)

POST DAILY BUT NOT IN REAL-TIME
I'm online constantly. Constantly. It's unhealthy. I do work during the day on weekdays, but other than that I'm right here. I like an RP that will keep moving on a daily basis. However, please do not sit at the computer waiting for my response. Of course, both of us will have off-days and sick days and days we just don't feel like it, and life in general -- I won't freak out if you disappear for awhile.

ORIGINAL SETTINGS
It's all about the original stuff for me. It's all about how far our imaginations can take us. Some keywords that get me all excited, especially combined:

  • fantasy
  • dragons
  • magic
  • forests and nature
  • folklore
  • whimsical mystery
  • creation mythos
  • epic journeys
  • curses
  • unusual powers
  • enchantments
  • overgrown ruins
  • ancient secrets
  • monsters and battles
  • world-shifting plot

You get the idea, I think! I like everything and anything that has limitless potential for magical, whimsical and epic creative tendencies. I'm flexible on technology levels (medieval, victorian, steampunk, sci-fi, tribal) as long as there is plenty of imagination and the plot is based on character action. My first and most beloved genre is Medieval Fantasy, though.

Some Important Preferences

ROMANCE WILL PROBABLY HAPPEN EVENTUALLY
Let's admit it, 1x1 RP is all about the romantic tension. Keyword here is tension. Let's make characters who hate each other off the bat, or are otherwise entirely distracted from romantic possibilities until the story progresses. I love love-hate relationships, banter, sabotage, insults and sarcasm.

I mostly do MxF, but I have had great success with the occasional MxM.

HONESTLY NOT A FAN OF BEING MATURE
I am way too old to be admitting this, but I actually really hate writing sex. I hate writing foreplay. I even hate flirting and sex jokes. I personally just don't think about sex that way. When forced to write or respond to it, I break character. I'm tired of pretending I'm into it, really.

However, I prefer not to fade to black. Rather, I'm a fan of the gloss-over: just a one-post emotional abstract from the character's POV that highlights their connection with the other person. Hell, I'm happy with one really good kiss. Cheesy? Hell yeah.

I PLAY MALE MOST OF THE TIME
Despite popular belief I am indeed female! I've become very used to playing male characters, though, to the point that playing the female role in a romance relationship seems awkward to me. Go figure, huh? Of course, I will not hesitate to play a female character if the need arises. So, I'm cool with whatever you prefer.

DROP THE CHARACTERS IN THE SETTING AND RUN WITH IT
This is important. This is the thing that breaks so many RPs for me before they begin. I absolutely cannot stand planning the plot beforehand. I can't explain the kind of rage that builds up inside me when I'm forced to fit a character into an expectation of what should happen.

Each character should have their own personal goal. Goals, I think, make or break a character. Let's each set our characters on that path toward their individual goals, then just decide on a reason their paths should cross. THAT'S IT. That's the beginning of the story. The characters will sort out the rest on their own.

Wanna Attempt a Story?

I'll RP over threads, email, pm or google docs.

PM me if you're interested. I will respond, but I won't guarantee we'll be a match. The RP should be fun and exciting for both of us: if either of us is going to end up disappointed, I'd rather let you know sooner rather than later.
@Monotonous @Korigon Still planning to post? ;)

@Meridian No sweat! See you when you get back! :D

Does anyone need anything from us? More info? More drama? Something to tie your specific character into some plottyness? Something epic and explosive? How bout more mystery? Anyone who's stuck or hesitant, shout out! :D

Ok I would go on and get things rolling, but wanna give everyone else a chance to make it into the room -- and have reactions to the info so far -- before I make an assumption that the characters are cool with this bombshell. XD

Edit: Just a reminder that no one is obligated to do (or not do) anything. You're all totally free to explore this world, or do something crazy or potentially plot-breaking, if that's your character's whim. Total freedom is yours.

Also, before the question inevitably arises: language! Everyone is able to understand everyone else. As far as your character is concerned, everyone is speaking your character's native language. There will be explanations IC eventually.

The crocodile's eyes peered around the room longingly, searching for something before his sight returned to the lady in green. An air of magic seemed afoot, maybe she was the source. He was still cold, so he scooted closer to the hearth and muttered. "Do.. do you have a blanket I could use?" Morrian looked a little defeated as he asked, almost embarrassed that he needed something.
Morrian
"I'd like one to," Ellis requested in addition to the crocodile person. "Does anyone know the quickest way back to Chastine? Can't deal with this no more."
Ellis
“Perhaps you could tell us where are...um?” Celadon then realised that he had no idea of their host’s name, or even the names of all the others around him. “I’m Celadon by the way, from Kiengry. Not really anywhere near here that much I do know, bit too cold for my liking.”
Celadon
"S- sorry there! I didn't notice you! And... Uh... Wait... Elvinians don't have horns! Uh... Who are you, miss lady?" Mayonaka then gazed at the glyph upon the floor and stared inquisitively at it, crawling on all fours he scampered to it and gazed with interest, smiling. "Hey, did you carve this Glyph? What's it for?" He asked the horned, long eared woman, perking his head up to look at her. As the boy did, he sat down, wiggling his legs excited at what it meant.
Mayonaka

The woman only offered a gently amused smile while the littlest feline made valiant attempts to comfort his fellow travelers, as wet and shivering as they were. She herself had no comforts to offer them -- the room was entirely bare save for the hearth and a single small table beside her that held a book and a box.

The small robot continued to stand in the doorway, blinking brokenly out at the thickening snow, waiting for others to approach via the swinging bridge, ready to assist them if necessary.

"I am sorry," the woman told Morrian and Ellis with a quiet bow of her head. "I have nothing but the warmth of the fire to offer you, but you may stay here as long as you wish. While you warm yourselves, I will answer your questions as best I can.

"I am Elurra. My friend here is Spook."
The little robot turned its head around, blinked at the room, and turned back to focus intensely on the snow. Elurra's smile turned to Mayonaka and his intense interest in the rune on the floor. "This is a Circle of Eternity," she told him by means of satiating his curiosity. "It means that time stands still in this room. While you are here you will not hunger, nor thirst, nor sleep, nor age." There was no telling how long she had stayed here, alone in this room where nothing changes.

She raised her eyes to the others. "This is the outpost at the edge of the mountain -- in a world very different from those worlds from which you have come." The wind outside whistled and howled. In the distance, thunder rumbled. "Chastine," she turned her eyes to Ellis, "and Kiengry," she looked to Celadon, "are impossible to return to without the help of immense power. Each of you -- so varied in species and clothing -- is from a different world. A different dimension, if you will. There is no road that will lead any of you home. I am sorry."

Elurra bowed her head again in apology. When she rose, she looked each of them in the eyes, as if assessing their strength.

"Of course, should you choose to take the path of the stones which brought you here, there is a chance you may see home again."

Haha I'm glad! Though personally I think of this more as a dangerous puzzle than a combative scenario. There are several ways to deactivate the monster -- and anything anyone thinks might work will probably work. ;) It's going to be done by the next round and no one is going to die.
