It’s my birthday today! I’m officially an older adult. It feels like Jude Law becoming Michael Gambdon overnight, and still being just as magical.

L O C A T I O N : Library
I N T E R A C T I O N S : N/A
M E N T I O N S : Lady Thea Smithwood @Tae

Sometime during the Archery completion, Prince Felix had taken his leave for the library. It was sometime right after Lady Thea made her dreadful appearance. As much as he felt a dread when he thought of her, he did care about her. It was a troubling feeling, but it existed inside himself nonetheless.

The time was now already three in the afternoon, and the Prince felt as if he had uncovered nothing. The sword competition was about to start, and it appeared that he would be missing it.

He wanted to research all possible scenarios that could have lead to what Lady Thea had mentioned. Obviously, it meant spending time away from the festivities. It was no matter in the long run but a simple show of vanity.

His dinner with the Lady would be in several hours, and he was trapped inside some sort of rabbit hole of information. It was frustrating and confusing, more so than the Lady herself. He had to begin wrapping things up shortly or he would be here all night. Standing Lady Thea up would be completely careless, and he for some reason felt an embarrassing eagerness to give the present to her.

Prince Felix closed the book on the Varian Kingdom. He looked at the papers that were scattered about the wood table. It was a mess. He was normally much tidier, but his chase into the situation left him seeming reckless (much like Lady Thea), but there was little he could do to stop himself.

Whether that was a good or bad thing, he still had yet to decide.
Neomi Adams

It was after her shift, and Neomi was packing for her trip. She let out a frustrated sigh, as she thought how wonderful it would be to have her mother’s tips and tricks of travel. But, asking her mother for help was clearly not an option.

Since telling them about the journey, she could not help but notice her parents were less than thrilled about her decision. Actually, it was more accurate to say were livid. One would think Neomi was committing treason. In a way she was. She was throwing away the family values that had cradled her childhood upbringing.

And, until she left for the Darklight Corridor, she was having to endure her parents’ reaction. More specifically, the reaction of her mother. Whether she was at the front desk or working in the kitchen, her mother’s disdain was evident in the older woman’s now piercing eyes and tightly frowned lips.

This better not suck, Neomi thought as she scraped her teeth over her bottom lip. I will never hear the end of it. Especially from Mom.

There was also the chance that she would have to work at The Burrow for the rest of her life, which meant she would never truly have the opportunity to explore her powers as a Howl. This could literally be her last chance. It might not be, but it totally could be.

Besides, she was no longer a child. She had just reached adulthood. If she wished to be an escort for a traveling Apothecary, she should be more than able to fulfill that desire.

“It shouldn’t be this hard,” Neomi muttered to no one in particular. If she was being honest, as she often was to a fault, she was an adult. Obviously. Needing her mother’s help was for children. Plus, in less than twenty-four hours, she would be out from under her parents’ wings for maybe the rest of her life.
Hooray! One prologue post coming up!
@wheels, stay nice. It shows strength and courage in character and is a rare quality.

I am reading an indie novel called The Lightkeeper by Sherry Shenoda. I haven’t finished it yet, but it is beautifully written and gives me high hopes for a good ending. I can’t help but recommend it.
@Mokley, I’ll keep her ‘tude in check, but by all means, if she is causing a problem in any way, let me know as so I can tone it down.

Your idea with the wind manipulation only being seen by her sounds great.

I can’t wait to play! ❤️

&fingers crossed.

It was another one of those nights. You know, the type when he would just lay there in bed mindlessly doomscrolling TikTok, and the ceiling fan would be spinning slowly around, pushing some ominous mist glowing from the window around the room… Wait, what?

James’ attention quickly glanced towards the clacking of the fan. Nothing but, maybe dust? He could hardly tell in the darkness. He scanned the room, again. Yes, again. He had been doing this for at least an hour, now, expecting different results.

He swore he wasn’t crazy. It was the town. He knew it. His nightmares had stopped when he had left for college. Or maybe, he made that up. He couldn’t remember anymore.

Maybe was crazy. James closed his eyes.

“Knock-knock.”

James shot from his bed. His cellphone clanked to the wood floor and slid underneath the bed.

“Geez, it’s just me Lucy smirked. Her head was tilted to one side in vain curiosity. Light brown hair draped down her shoulders. She was wearing some white spaghetti strapped pajamas set, and for whatever reason or another, that particular outfit (among several others) always made him feel a tad bit uncomfortable.

“What do you want?” James glanced around the dark floor, searching for any potential sign of where his cell phone might have wandered.

“Oh, nothing. Just watching you,” as she said this, their eyes met. Her eyes seemed to glow from the hallway light. A smile etched on her face, and for several moments too long, they just looked at each other, as the fan creaked back-and-forth.

Slowly, a spaghetti strap fell from one of her shoulders.

“Am I allowed to know why?” James finally asked. He was bending down to search for his phone. He thought he could see the glow emitting under his bed, and he was right.

“I don’t know. You’ve been really cringe recently. Like, you’ve always been cringe, just more so. Mom and Dad think so, too.”

“Is that what they said?”

“No, not really,” Lucy’s stable smile found a smugger position. “But, I did tell them I would help keep an eye on you. After all, you are my favorite big brother.”

James’ arm extended under the bed. The light on the screen had turned off, and he had to use what was left of the hallway light to find it. Thankfully, there was only one shadow he could see beneath the bed, and that one shadow-lump was his phone.

“I’m your only big brother, Lucy.” James grabbed his phone and unlocked the screen. His eyes glanced up at Lucy, and as if on cue or working from a script, she pushed her spaghetti strap back over her thin shoulder and made some charming pose before lifting her nose in the air and waltzing off.

Light flooded the bedroom as his sister’s body disappeared. The creaking of the fan continued, and for several seconds, James stared blankly at nothing until his phone’s screen locked. The light dimmed, and he took several calming breaths. Carefully, he stood up and went to close his bedroom door. But, before he closed his door, he turned the light on.

James looked towards the bedroom window. If she was the only one watching him, then he had nothing to worry about, right? His body flopped back onto the bed. His face buried into his pillow, and his cellphone was held tightly in one hand, draped off the bed. Maybe, he was crazy. Who was he kidding? The whole town was crazy. He just needed to prove it.

He breathed annoyingly into his pillow and turned over. He brought his cellphone to his face. The screen light glowed over him once again, and his thumb began its endless scrolling. Anything to get his mind to turn off.
