Billy Kaplan/Teddy AltmanFuture Demiurge/Future King of SpaceNew York/Space
C H A R A C T E R C O N C E P T:

"Truth. Justice." "And the homosexual way."

Billy and Teddy were inseparable during their time at school, and before long it was clear that this bond was more than just friendship. This bond was strengthened by the revelation of their abilities, with the two believing themselves to both be mutants. Given their obsession with superheroes and all things of that nature, it was only natural that the two decided to use their gifts in order to fight crime.

Little did they know, neither of the two were right about the origin of their abilities.

Galaxies away, a great war between the Kree and the Skrull Empire rages. Years ago during the conflict, a Kree warrior found himself imprisoned within the palace of Skrull Emperor Dorrek VII. There he met and fell in love with the emperor's daughter, Anelle, who gave birth to a Hatchling months later. Fearing for its life due to its parentage, she sent it away across the stars with a handmaiden, hoping to hide them from the war. Rumours of the half-breed echo across the battlefields, with many believing that the appearance of the long lost Prince Dorrek VIII could turn the tides of war.

Around this same time, the sentient life force of the universe itself, the Demiurge, began to prepare itself for its predestined host. A young baby was placed on the doorstep of an orphanage in the city of Manhattan. Neither the child, nor his adopted parents, had any idea what was in store for him.

Wiccan and Hulkling (hereby renamed Changeling because the name Hulkling is dumb) are a pair of characters that I have loved for years, with the two of them being my favourite relationship in comics. I've always wanted to bring them to life, and given the recent Empyre event by Marvel Comics, I am now more encouraged than ever.

Billy and Teddy are both characters predestined for greatness; Billy is set to become the omnipotent Demiurge, a powerful entity which gave birth to the Elder Gods, while Teddy is the saviour who is meant to unite two species that have been warring against one another for aeons. Within the comics, they have been building up to these events for years. This won't be the same for my interpretation, as Billy and Teddy, despite only just starting out as superheroes, will find themselves thrust into their destinies. I want to explore how these changes will affect them, and their relationship.

C H A R A C T E R N O T E S:

When it comes to my supporting cast, I want to announce off the bat that I will NOT be making use of the Scarlet Witch, or that aspect of Billy's history. I will be absolutely happy if someone were to pick up the character and play as her, and if they did wish to collaborate in that scenario, I will be more than happy to talk.

Another talking point is the Young Avengers. While I currently do not have plans to make use of them as characters, they are a topic I may approach in the future. That being said, I'd be perfectly happy if someone else were to make use of them. This would definitely be something I'd be happy to collaborate with as well.

As for characters I am interested in, one aspect of my story will deal heavily with the Kree and Skrull Empire, and as such, I will be pulling a number of characters affiliated with them. This will also include a range of other Cosmic based characters from both DC and Marvel.

I am also planning on using aspects from DC's Sideways series, namely their use of Tempus Fuginaut.

Yet, day by day Shayera finds herself doubting the cause she has spent her whole life dedicated to. As highlighted through my portrayal of Magik in Absolute Comics, I really enjoy stories involving a character's journey of self-discovery and actualization. Hawkgirl, particularly the version shown within Bruce Timm's Justice League and Justice League Unlimited television series, is a character who I feel embodies these themes extremely well during the "Starcrossed" story arc; This featured Shayera having to choose between her home planet and Earth. The conflict here of individualism, collectivism, and fighting for the common good are ideas I want to explore further.

The first few arcs of my story will take place amongst the stars, as Shayera Hol works as a Thanagarian Police Officer, before eventually heading to Earth.

My concept takes huge inspiration from the previously mentioned story arc from the Justice League series, as well as Captain Marvel from the Marvel Cinematic universe.

The Thanagar Ruling Council: Both feared and respected by the people of Thanagar, the Ruling Council are the Oligarchy which rules the Thanagar Empire. Many will live their entire lives without ever setting eyes on the council, with the invitation of a meeting with the group often being considered a death sentence.

The Terrifics instantly became a favourite of mine since it's debut a few years ago, with the idea of a bunch of strangers coming together to form both a team and a family being something I enjoy a lot.

This series was heavily based on the idea of the Fantastic Four, with each character being an analogue for one the iconic roster. Mr Terrific, in particular, takes on the role of Mr Fantastic, and as such, I really want to hone into some of the flaws that the character he is replacing held. In some stories, Reed is seen to only care about science or their work, getting wrapped up in those things and as a result letting things slide because of their focus in on larger problems. I wanted to play up this idea with Mr Terrific, a character who's already suffered so much loss within his personal life.

October 18th, 1985

Joanie’s newfound determination remained intact as she made her way through the sleepy suburbs of Crestwood Hollow. The flickering street lamps lit her way as she marched onwards, her arms wrapped around herself in an effort to brace herself from the wind. It was only a short journey, with the estate of the infamous Bordeaux twins only being a couple of blocks from her own house, yet the darkness of the night made her uneasy. As she neared the party, she watched in bemusement as numerous kids her age drunkenly stumbling from the direction she was heading, having already decided to call it a night. Due to their number, she was beginning to worry that she was going to be arriving just after everyone had left, but she felt herself at ease as she turned into the driveway to see that those she had passed had only been a small fraction of the party-goers, with the house swarming with countless more.

Thankfully, the person she was looking for was visible to her immediately. Victor Bordeaux stood coolly atop the balcony overlooking the lawn, a cigarette between his fingers. The sight was not entirely unique to her; Vic had a habit to take time for himself at events like this in order to contemplate his existence or something existential like that. Joanie awkwardly gave a wave of her arms to get his attention, receiving a smile and a beckon in return once he had spotted her.

Upon entering the house’s entryway, her breathing slowed, her eyes adjusting to the haze of cigarette smoke. Music blared around her, amplified by the shouts and cheers of her classmates. Her eyes darted among them, scanning their faces. She liked to get a lay of the land. It was a habit she had developed in school. She could stay near to who she wished to be near. Avoid those she wished to avoid. And right now, that list to avoid was topped by the name Vanessa.

Life seemed to be in her favour, as despite how hard she looked, there seemed to be no sign of her. Her heart ached in response.

Finalizing her route, she moved forward, keeping her head down now as she crossed the room and climbed the stairs.

And there’s the birthday boy!” She announced fondly as she made her way back out into the night’s cool breeze and approached the balcony’s railing.

Glad you could make it, Jo!” Victor said, thankfully. He was still bordering on sober since Jenny had swiped what was left of the drink he had.

You had something to drink? There’s plenty. Mom uh... Kind of went overboard. And everyone brought plenty of their own supply.” The boy mentioned, putting out the sixth cigarette for the night. He was chain-smoking, and he usually did it when something bothers him.

Something always bothered him.

Clearly!” She expressed, glancing back towards the doorway in bemusement. “I’ll grab one in a minute. Dad was still up so I wasn’t able to sneak a couple o' bottles like last week.” A rare smile flashed across her face as her mind floated back. That was until her eyes met the railing beside them and the now half-empty cigarette box Vic had been pulling from. She raised an eyebrow as she watched him reach for another.

How’s your night been so far?” Vic lit the cigarette as her question hung in the air.

That’s a loaded question. I’m 17 and on top of the world.” Victor joked, taking a long drag of the cigarette. Still not really answering the question. He began again.

I’m not too good at this whole party thing. It’s probably why I’m out here, instead of down there.” He paused, pointing behind him. "I told them that we should have just invited our closest friends and have a barbecue. Like a normal family. But my mom and sister both insisted that we’d do this. They said that Dad wanted us to celebrate like this. It’s our first birthday since he died, you know?

She could do little but nod as he spoke. Joanie knew of his dislike for events like this, with her usually sharing the same opinion. Yet as he spoke and talked of his father, she realized how little she truly knew him. Despite their friendship, they had rarely spoken about his dad and what had happened. She had figured he would talk when he was ready. Given how fixated her mind had been lately, she hadn’t even considered how difficult a day Victor must’ve been having.

I can’t… I can’t imagine how that must feel Vic.” She moved closer, placing her around his back and stroking the shoulder of his jacket with her thumb soothingly. Resting her head onto his arm, she embraced him tightly. Victor hugged back and was surprised by the surge of empathy coming his way. Making sure not to accidentally burn or get ash on his friend.

Whatever you do, he’ll be proud of you. You know that right?

Yeah, I know. He always was.” Victor said, a faint smile on his lips and a tear in his eye. He escaped the hug and took another drag of his smoke, turning around and wiping his eye quickly.
Anyway. How are you doing? I imagine this isn’t too easy for you, either.

It wasn’t. But she couldn’t say that now, not after everything she had just told her.

I’ll manage. I think.” She affirmed, hoping to God that her face wasn’t letting her down here. “Going to just drown my sorrows and hope I don't act like a complete spaz and do something totally pathetic again.

Stepping towards the door, an idea popped into her mind as she gave Vic one last look.
Hey, maybe we could still have that quiet barbeque you wanted soon?

Victor smiled. “I’d like that a lot.” He said, taking another puff of smoke.

I’ll be down soon, too. I’m sure Vanessa’s gonna worry about me. And, Jo.” He paused, looking her in the eye, making sure his well-meaning would come across. “Tell her how you feel. I don’t like to get too sentimental. But birthdays always remind me that time goes on and every year, there’s a lot of regrets since the last birthday.

She pondered his words for a few moments, as what was the first genuine smile Joanie had had in days began to form across her face. Her hand moved to cover it, as by habit, but she stopped herself by running it gleefully through her hair. She was amazed that she was actually considering it. The power of the Bordeaux' family charm.

We’ll see.

At that she turned on her heel, leaving Victor alone once more, and rejoined the hustle and bustle of the party.

Her journey back through the mess of alcohol and adolescence that was the rest of the house was uneventful bar the occasional greeting to a classmate or a racial jeer from one of the meathead jocks. Minus the booze, it did not feel much different than school. That was when from behind her came the enchanting voice that Joanie had been hoping with all her heart that she would hear tonight.

Joanie, you made it!

Her heart skipped a beat, before launching into overdrive. Trying her best not to seem erratic, Joanie turned to face Vanessa. Despite her efforts though, her cheeks flushed hot immediately as her stomach grew heavy. Joanie’s eyes took in everything. The coolness of her smile and the red of her lips. The way her hair fell over her shoulders in perfect curls. Even her outfit, while not something that Joanie would have normally been a fan of on anybody else, just felt right on her.

It was clear that she was drunk and enjoying herself, contrasting heavily with her previous encounter with Victor. Joanie considered whether behind that cheerful persona was a soul as in pain as her brother was.

Vanessa moved forwards and wrapped her arms around her. She regretted wearing that jumper then, longing for how it would have felt to feel Vanessa’s touch upon her skin then. They parted quickly, with Joanie stammering out a hello.

She wanted to say something cool and funny. Make her laugh. Make her think she was more than an awkward mess of emotions right now. No words came when she opened her mouth though, her brain frozen with insecurity. There was just so much she wanted to say. So much she wanted to get off her chest.

Vanessa continued, however.

"Alan just opened up a keg in the lounge” She exclaimed, nodding her head to the doorway to their left. “Wanna’ join?

Joanie glanced in the direction that she had pointed. A large group were laughing together inside the doorway. It was made up of a number of Mather Memorial’s student royalty. They were Vanessa’s people. The complete opposite of Joanie’s.

Victor’s words echoed in her head. She clenched her fists.

No thanks, Vanessa.” Joanie could do nothing but accept the words as her truth as they came out of her mouth. She knew now that agreeing would be stupid. “I actually… I actually have to go.

Vanessa’s face showed an expression of disappointment, amplified by her drunken state.

Aww, well I’m sorry I never ran into you sooner!” Joanie’s cheeks could only blush up once more as Vanessa apologized. As if to only further prove that she meant it, she leaned in for another hug. They stayed there in silence for a few seconds, before Vanessa pulled away, running her hand down Joanie’s arm lovingly as she did so.

I’ll speak to you Monday!” She promised, before walking away.

October 18th, 1985
It was an hour since the party had been due to start, yet here Joanie was, sitting at the foot of her bed, frozen in thought. Music bellowed loudly around her room, emanating from a beat-up record player tucked away into the corner. Clothes and junk littered the floor around her. Contrary to this mess around her, she looked decent if she did say so herself; an old oversized jumper atop a cute pleated skirt. Despite her outward appearance, however, the mood was sombre as an empty cold ran through her, her mind racing back to exactly a week ago. All she could feel was regret as she replayed the kiss over and over in her mind. It had been everything she had hoped it would be. As magical as it was described in the books she poured herself over. It felt perfect. It felt right. Yet she knew that it shouldn’t have. Vanessa wasn’t like her. Vanessa was normal. Better than normal in fact.

Yet, a lone thought kept tugging at her heartstrings. What if it hadn’t been her imagination? What if that really was the feeling of Vanessa kissing back she had felt? What if?

Joanie hadn’t spoken to her since that night. Throughout the last week, she had done her best to avoid encountering Vanessa. She kept her lingering eyes locked away from her during class, despite feeling Vanessa’s upon her constantly. In the halls she moved quickly, dodging any attempts she made to contact her. And there were a great many attempts too. Before all of this, such attention would’ve caused a fury of butterflies to stir within her, yet now it was merely a grim reminder that everything was about to change.

She turned her head towards the two crudely wrapped presents on the bed beside her.

The larger of the two was for Victor; a second-hand vinyl of the Star Wars Soundtrack that her father had managed to acquire from one of his friends at the college. Looking at it immediately caused a whole new wave of guilt to wash over her. While they hadn’t always been close, he’d been such a loyal friend to her over the last year. It was why she had felt comfortable to tell him everything that had happened. He seemed to understand and didn’t get mad as she had initially expected, but Joanie could only guess what he really thought. Had she only been friends with him to get to Vanessa? The more Joanie overthought, the more even she didn’t really know for sure.

The smaller gift was for Vanessa. Even from a distance, you could see that more care had gone into wrapping it compared to the former. The sight of it only added to the well of guilt within her. Her fists clenched into fists as her anger swelled. It was currently her friend's birthday, yet here she was moping over something that was never allowed to happen. Tonight shouldn't be about her, nor the bullshit that was racking her brain.

Fuck it.” She announced to herself, before swinging her arm, swiping the smaller of the two packages from her bed and launching it onto the mess of her floor. Placing a look of determination onto her face, she swallowed her guilt, before rising to her feet. Scooping up both her bag and Vic’s album, she ventured into the night.

As Billy Kaplan stared up at the behemoth of a man before him, he uttered the whisper of a prayer in Hebrew. He had no idea who or what a Tempus Fuginaut was but having a golden-skinned being appear before you shouting your name was clearly a sign for the worst, especially in his line of work. His mind rushed back over everything the giant had said. Careless Actions. The comment stung. It was clear that what he had done to the Terror Twins was even worse than either he or Teddy had even imagined if it had put him on this guy’s radar.

What do you want?” Billy nearly stuttered as he spoke. It had taken a lot of willpower to open his mouth, let alone ask a question.

Tempus Fuginaut, as he referred to himself, simply looked down at him for a moment, as if questioning why someone so clearly beneath him had dare talk back. Billy expected the worse, yet no untimely death seemed to come his way. Instead, Tempus Fuginaut opened their mouth to speak once more.

I will show you.

Before Billy could even utter any form of protest, the world around him lurched violently.

The skyline darkened, quickly filling with the twinkle of stars. New York was gone none, leaving a void of space below him. Billy panicked, flailing his arms around him as he prepared to fall, yet by some miracle found himself floating in place. He gasped in amazement, his eyes taking all of the beautiful emptiness around him in. The stars were like scattered moondust in the sky. He’d never expected it to look so peaceful. He knew in an instant that this sight would never escape Billy’s memory.

He found a dazed smile escaping across his lips. If only Teddy was here to witness this with him.

Tempus Fuginaut simply looked down at the teenager, a smile of bemusement crossing his face at the sight of Billy’s adjustment to his new surroundings. It was odd to see such a regal looking being smile like that. It almost humanized them. Billy almost felt at ease for the first time since this whole ordeal had begun. Almost.

Billy nearly vocalized this thought, until the being began to talk again, with the booming tone of Tempus’ voice merely adding a god-like atmosphere to the space around them.

The world is forever a place of wonder, but with that wonder comes chaos.” As he spoke, Tempus gave a wave of his hand, and Billy watched as the vastness around them shifted, as if a movie projector were casting an image against the darkness. Billy recognized a great deal of the projections before them; he had watched the events in a state of terror long ago on his TV screen. The great beast Starro rising from the depths of the ocean. The alien attack on New York City. A green giant rampaging through a city. Other images he did not recognize quite so much. Parents rushing to save their infant child as their planet crumbles around them. Great battles of the Gods. A crazed scientist left for years on a barren wasteland by his team.

And then finally an image of Billy himself from earlier that day, the bodies of Tommy and Tuppence Terror lying unconscious below him. Billy shuddered to think of the other clips of himself misusing his abilities that could have appeared.

Where the Monitor’s and Watcher’s jobs are to watch and observe all of reality, I must preserve it.” Tempus Fuginaut continued, unfazed by the images beyond him. “Sure, other beings help…

At this, the images shifted. The clip of Starro moved to show the might of the Justice League facing the tentacled creature down. The Avengers arriving to fight off the invasion above Manhattan. A young metahuman feeling the vibrations of the world himself. No, not just one world. The vibrations of all worlds. There were more like him too, all throughout the multiverse. Even an anthropomorphic duck wearing a 3-piece suit. It was a big universe. Filled with heroes.

Billy found himself spinning on the spot in order to take it all in before they shifted into nothingness once more.

But I heal the tears in space-time and prevent them from happening.” Tempus stood tall and bold, radiating power as he spoke of his part in the world. “I seek to keep the universe in complete harmony until the Demiurge is born and can recreate it in his image.

It was a lot to take in. Superheroes he understood. He had been watching caped crusaders fighting criminals for years, and even been doing some of the fighting himself. It was second nature now. This on the other hand? This was different. This was otherworldly.

What.. What’s the Demiurge?” The first of a great number of questions on his mind.

A smile formed upon the golden man’s face once more.

Take a look for yourself.” He said, gesturing upwards towards the vastness of space before them.

Billy did not see it at first. He just found himself staring at the twinkle of the starlight, expecting another image to appear like before. Then he really began to see the stars, and how they were aligned in the darkness. The shining speckles twirled and danced along the sky in various patterns, forming lines. The lines of a face. The curls of hair. It was soon clear whose face it was bejewelled into the universe itself. It was Billy’s.

Why was it his face?

He opened his mouth to speak but no words came out. It was if they had gotten lost in this starry reflection before him.

Yes Billy Kaplan. You are the Demiurge.” Tempus’s words snapped Billy back to reality slightly. “The sentient life force of the Universe itself.

No… No I’m fucking not.” Billy declared loudly, turning to Tempus. He was shaking now. “I’m barely 18. I’m still a kid. You’ve got this all wrong sir, I-

Tempus raised a hand, cutting him off, further adding to Billy exasperation.

You may be young now boy, but it is your destiny. You only have a glimpse of your truth power currently, but it is growing by the day. I shudder to think of the damage possible by such power in the hands of someone so young and inexperienced.

Then what on earth do you expect me to do?” Billy exclaimed, waving his arms out in front of him in confusion. If what he could now was only a snippet of what was to come, then he wanted out.

Train. Stay here with me and I will teach you all there is I know.

Billy scoffed loudly at the thought.

I can’t stay here… I have a life. I have Teddy.

You think that this Teddy is more important than the universe itself?

Teddy is my whole universe.” Billy stated adamantly, clenching his fists. He knew it was selfish. He obviously knew what the right decision was here. But he couldn’t stay. He wasn’t ready for this. He wasn’t a God. “I want to go home. Now.

Tempus pursed his lips, glaring down at the teenager. Billy held his own and glared back. But it was not strength that fueled him. It was fear.

At last Tempus Fuginaut gave up.

Fine. But in time Billy Kaplan, you will accept your fate.

Good fucking luck with that.

With a wave of the giant’s hand, the world around Billy shifted once more. Gone was the beautiful background of stars. Now Billy was back on the rooftop from before, the wind rushing around him.

He stood silently, his eyes gazing over the city absentmindedly. The ring of his phone soon brought back into focus. He rushed to pull it from his pocket. It was Teddy, worrying where he had gotten to. He sighed a breath of relief.

Whatever it was that was happening, at least everything with Teddy was ok.
