Current I think I'm starting to hone in on what my particular illness is: either long COVID or ME/CFS. If it's the former, it might be curable. If it's the latter, I don't know how much more I can endure.

Little Lamplight Outskirts, Oregon

He'd been skulking the forests surrounding Little Lamplight for hours, bloodshot eyes scouring the treeline for any sign of the beast. In one hand, the aging lone survivor gripped a weathered ax with a roughly-shaped spruce handle. The feeling of the splinters digging into his skin kept him alert in the cold that threatened to drag him into the black. His other hand, calloused and slick with blood that wasn't his own, clenched at a swinging lantern, frosted glass serving as a bulwark against the howling winds. The man had abandoned his human need for warmth, venturing out into the forests alone and uncovered, swinging at shadows that dared to cross his path. Anger seeped through his teeth in thickening, crystallized froth, a visible reminder of the effect that losing everything had on him.

As he trudged through the building snow, head wildly craning around at every slight sound, he thought of how Enoch was a fool. Had the formerly alive leader of the town left well enough alone, perhaps Little Lamplight wouldn't be barren, running afoul of every damned spirit whose lives were lost in the cascade of great and terrible events. No, the man thought. Enoch was greedy, but William was the one who kept insisting we should dig. Even in this cycle of rumination, the man couldn't help but think he was partly to blame, simply by being there. Perhaps he could've went further west, to the shorelines of California. Maybe there, she would've survived.

The trees shook, branches freeing themselves from the burden of snow. The old man turned to watch as a shadow slipped and weaved through the trees, the sheer shoonk! of something sharp gouging bark out of the wood giving away the beast's position. However, the man refused to give chase. No, something was off, and the man knew it: he was no longer on the offensive. He had become the prey, yet again.

He shifted his feet, wheeling about as he broke away and into a sprint in the opposite direction of the trees. His breath caught in his throat as he suddenly became aware of how human he was, his voice hoarse as he growled with every step. Yet, the vibrations in the ground were getting stronger and more intense, a sign that the beast was closing in, and quickly. The man could hear the blood pounding in his ears, his hold on the ax getting tighter. At some point, he knew he'd reach a dead end. He'd have to fight. It was something for which he was under-prepared, but what else could he do? What else did he have?

The cliff was the answer to the question, terminating in a sheer dropoff that the man narrowly avoided, stumbling and crashing down into the snow. He choked and gasped for air, his lungs burning from the effort of escape as his head turned to the treeline behind him, waiting. Sure enough, through the screaming of6 the blizzard that whipped about the region and threatened to bury the history of Little Lamplight and its past in a white grave, he could hear it.

foom...
foom...
foom...
foom...
foom...

Pale ivory light from the moon blanketed the treeline in a eerie glow. From the depths of the umbral realm emerged a tall creature, its silhouette vaguely humanoid and contorting in odd, painful angles. It hung at the gateway made from the merging of branches from adjacent trees, its thin and large claws slowly slicing through the surface of the trunks to either side. Among the alabaster skin of the white oaks that separated the old man from any hope of civilization, he could see the beast's unwelcoming antlers, like thorns fashioned from wrought iron. Sunk into the shadows were two white orbs where the beast's head would likely be, vigilant and bearing the stare of hunger.

The old man saw the invitation and crawled to his feet. His hands were numb by now, yet still he clutched at the ax, dropping the lantern and listening to it fall over the side of the cliff and hit the rocks below. There was nowhere else to go. If he couldn't stop it here, there was no hope for retribution.

"Come on," he muttered, his voice stolen by the banshee-like and frigid winds. "Come get me."

The beast responded in kind, suddenly launching itself from the treeline, its claws primed and pointed forward as it sailed through the air. The last thing the old man saw was the off-white of bone and a sheet of crimson.

Stone's Throw, Oregon

Clara Mathews was frantic.

She'd abandoned her high heels minutes ago, favoring the grip of her feet against the moist asphalt of the alleyways that were recently caught in the rain. She'd called for help as she ran, but not a single soul was seemingly awake at this time. Not even an hour prior, Clara was at Hopper's, a local bar owned by the titular Hopper, chatting sweet nothings to a man that would've been an easy lay. She knew better, however - she had a few drinks, and she was in no shape to make what could've been a regretful decision. At closing time, though, one regretful decision was replaced with another. Despite not living particularly close to the bar itself, she decided that it would be a good idea to get some air and walk home. The streets would be empty, she thought. It would be easy to get home.

The walls of the alleyway shifted and swam in Clara's vision, making it hard for her to find her footing in the darkened corridors. Suddenly, in her harrowed pace, she felt a sharp pain in her arm as she slammed the side4 of her body against a near-camouflaged dumpster with a metallic thunk. She collapsed to the ground, crying out in pain as she grabbed her shoulder. The speed at which she hit the dumpster surely dislocated her shoulder from the socket, she thought. She could hardly move it, and as the footsteps began to close in, Clara started to crawl.

k'thok...
k'thok...
k'thok...
k'thok...
k'thok...

A shadow seemingly blacker than the darkness in the alley loomed over Clara. Instinctively, she flipped over and laid on her back, trying to scoot away from the source as tears began to flow from her dilated hazel eyes. In the reflection of her fearful gaze, a creature towered above her, errant prongs of wood emerging from various points on its body. It reached a jagged claw into a cavity in its abdomen, pulling from it a shimmering golden gel that slipped in large, gloopy droplets through the gaps of its fingers. It knelt down and pushed the claw toward Clara, who began screaming in horrific, bloodcurdling, cold fear.

Somewhere in the Dark Mile, a bell tolled. The grains of sand were becoming few and far between.

"What a bunch of horseshit."

Looking forward to playing with you. See you in the Dark Mile.
Noted. I'll go ahead and start work on the official thread.
I am interested as well, though a bit late to the party.

Still two slots available. One, now, if you're joining.
Judging by what I can see, the current people interested in pursuing this campaign are:

@Tally Dor
@Raqueltrper
@PatientBean
@Passable Writer
@Theyra

If this is correct, mark this post with a thumbs up so I can confirm it. Once confirmed, I'll begin crafting the official thread.
I'll throw my hat in the ring. I'm currently in two 5e campaigns; one with 2014 rules, the other with 2024 rules. I'm not the best on the rules, but I know enough to get by. What I don't know, I can look up. I have several character ideas, but I'll wait for more info on the campaign setting before I decide on who I'd like to go with.

Lazaretto, CEO of Averia Health Systems, said of the controversial win over former incumbent George Freeman: 'It was clear that people wanted change in Fortuna City, and they made the right choice to secure that change. I promise, as Fortuna City's new mayor, to bring change to the people and to raise our ambitions to new heights. A new era of prosperity awaits us, and I will be sure to lead the charge where it counts. However, that can wait for after the celebration.'

"The HSS Panacea is set to launch tomorrow afternoon, with Lazaretto's wife and first lady of the city, Gina Lazaretto-Schaefer, christening the initial departure. The two-week cruise for all of Lazaretto's constituents has been called a bribe, with Lazaretto defending the cruise as 'a necessary getaway from all the negativity brought on by diehard Freeman supporters.' Further criticism has been drawn to Mayor Lazaretto's continued ties to Averia Health Systems, the pharmaceutical company that handles almost all prescription medication within the region. When asked about this, Mr. Lazare..."

Fortuna Port, Fortuna City

If there was anything about Fortuna City that nearly everyone could agree on, it's that the City of Glass was irreducibly hot. Not even the height of summer, the mid-morning sun brought the heat in triple-digit degrees, causing micro-mirages across the godray-soaked cement platforms of Fortuna Port. The shadows that glided across the docks wore sandals and Crocs of varying kinds, a mish-mash of colors that would melt and stick to the ground were they to stay outside any longer. Many people, luggage in tow, were eager to ascend the steps of the HSS Panacea's loading platform.

"Credentials, please!" piped an excited concierge next to the stairs. The name tag pinned to his chest read 'Atlas', and the young man greeted each passenger with a firm salute and a wink. He was built for the sun, tanned and sunscreened skin absorbing the light and giving it a honeyed luster. As he checked the passports and verification IDs for each passenger, the line that building all the way back to the parking lot was starting to crawl forward.

Tony McGee
@Auragreedia

Tony, for all he could do, was near the back of the line, but was starting to see some movement. If he were to gauge how long it would take, it could be anywhere from another 30 minutes to an hour before he reached the front and had his credentials checked. As he waits, another man - one much older and wearing a gaudy sun hat - lets out an exhausted sigh.

"I got up at 4 A.M. for this shit. I shoulda just stayed my happy ass at home. At least I wouldn't be dry-roasting in the sun. Unbelievable. And what is the point of all the glass in this damn city? We don't need all those damn windows."

The old man turns in Tony's direction, but doesn't quite face him, instead crowing out to the open air.

"Open a fuckin' door once in a while, would you?!"

Someone further behind Tony responds.

"Shut up!"

With a harrumph and cross of his arms, the old man's eyes dart over to look at Tony's face. "Can you believe the gall of these kids?" he asks expectantly.
I like this system, and the options interest me. I've tried doing some research on MotW, and assume the specifics - as you said in the OP - will be elaborated on further after interest is shown. I like how this is driven more by character and story than a dozen skill checks and dice rolls.

In terms of characters, I'm torn between the Mundane (which sounds like it can be humorous), the Monstrous (which seems like it could have some character development potential), and the Professional (which, I dunno, sounds like it could be cool).

Yeah, there's more to talk about, like the gear you can acquire, Harm, Luck points, etc., but I'll wait until the campaign gains more interest before really diving into everything. When character creation comes up, I'll have a repository of fillable sheets for people to choose from. It'll be imperative you guys discuss with me and, potentially, each other what your possible choices are for your Hunter, just to make sure that no one else chooses the same Hunter.
Do we need dice to join this? it looks really interesting.

According to what I can see on the forum itself, they have a dedicated dice-rolling section, so we will most likely use that for your dice rolls, for posterity's sake. It seems pretty easy to use, not as complex as something you'd find on something like Roll20 or Foundry. That works for this campaign and the related system, as the mechanics will be easy enough to grasp.

In 1861, the town of Little Lamplight, Oregon, was founded with the promise of community and wealth following suit. Its people were slaughtered and the town abandoned in less than a year.

The history of Little Lamplight is a short one, but in the ten months that it lasted, the town was plagued with events that would lead to the deaths of its inhabitants. Its meager existence is a footnote in the history of the Old West, with the one thing known by historians being that it was believed to be cursed. Nowadays - having dropped the 'Little' from its name - Lamplight, Oregon is now known as a Superfund site, its ground contaminated with chemicals and compounds that make it uninhabitable. Everything has been lost.

Over 150 years later, not too far away in the town of Stone's Throw, strange occurrences have been cropping up in increasing numbers. Though no one wants to believe superstition, creatures of undetermined make and origin have been taking unsuspecting victims. For what purpose remains to be seen. The only thing to be sure of is that you don't want it to be you.

And yet, this is only one of several layers of mystery to be uncovered, explained, and brought to conclusion. Just on the horizon lies a greater threat - one that aims to swallow up the region and plunge the rest of the world into chaos.

The question is - who will take up the mantle and protect the people of Stone's Throw?

LAMPLIGHT is a horror campaign set within the Monster of the Week TTRPG system developed by Michael Sands. Players will each take on the role of a 'Hunter' and work together as a team to solve the mysteries occurring around the town of Stone's Throw, Oregon. Each Hunter has unique abilities and circumstances - no two Hunters will ever be the same. There's a lot to uncover here in Stone's Throw and the nearby areas - if you're willing to risk life and limb to find it. Keep your wits about you and learn to protect yourself.

But first - a primer.

Monster of the Week: The Basics

Monster of the Week is a system that focuses a lot less on complex mechanics and a lot more on narrative and pushing the story forward. However, your actions won't be without a bit of dice-rolling.

Afterword

Everything discussed here will be further elaborated and expanded upon, once I find interest and players. I'm seeking a group of no less than 3 players and no more than 6 that are familiar with Casual and/or Advanced RP.

The official thread will go up two weeks from the minimum requisite amount of players needed for the campaign being found, so those of you who do express interest, make sure to be watchful.

Until then:

See you at the Dark Mile.
