All hail the dark god of student living.

WHOOPS

I STARTED A CULT
This looks... intriguing. Huh.

Time to crack open the history books.

It's good fried. Wouldn't want to eat it every day, or every week, or even every month. But fried spam every one and a while is okay. Good fair food.

I suppose the "even every month" thing is fair, and the shelf life and price tag make it a little more accessible. Still, having gone through a period in my life where the chief components of my deity were spam, ramen, and dry cereal, I'm a little leery of the prospect of eating spam when there are any number of alternatives.

Those were dark times in my life. I was living on campus at a different university, I actually stayed on campus over Thanksgiving break because I didn't want to make my family pay the time or money to drive something like 8-12 hours straight with no stopping just to pick me up. I had dry Raisin Bran and peanut butter for Thanksgiving. I'd spent the day before walking over to a Subway on the street opposite of the opposite side of campus (read: far away), tried to buy a big sub to have for Thanksgiving, and learned that I had something like 12 cents left on my debit card because I tried very hard not to take any student non-student loans that year.

...

Those were dark times in my life. I don't like spam. I'll eat it.

EDIT: I should clarify that I DID take out student loans. Made a typo up there. But that situation was really bad because all my food-related money was loaded onto a student card, which I couldn't use at all during Thanksgiving because all the on-campus food places closed down. That was also the same semester I realized I was paying 700 dollars a semester for a meal plan that gave me 300 dollars of food in return, 400 dollars if I only went to the discount places with the very best discounts for having a student meal plan. And then I learned the school in question wouldn't let me drop classes while I had some $25 hold that I didn't have the on-hand cash to pay for, nor the money in the bank to pay for. Those were dark times.
Frankly, it tastes worse than cold turkey but better than potted meat. I still wouldn't use it for much more than a breakfast food. It has a pretty decent shelf life, however, so there's that.
I'll just be honest: I have problems with a lot of decisions Georgey has made as a writer, including the whole "let's write from 16^23 perspectives with characters we'll try to kill off and make a really confusing world for everyone!" I don't think it's a good approach. I also don't like how we hop between different continents so frequently. Frankly, there should be a book about the war in the north, another book with a southern perspective, another book about shit happening around the wall, and a book about what's happening with those goddamned dragons, and maybe one last book to FINALLY TIE IT TOGETHER and make a complete story from a limited number of perspectives.

But instead we're led on an infinite goose chase about coming dragons interspersed with tales of non-consensual sex of varying degrees of "oh God why am I reading this?"

EDIT: Let me add this: GRRM does a wonderful job in his story about Duncan the Tall or whatever his name is. It's focused around one character - an actual protagonist and idealistic young knight (who's actually a peasant IIRC) who's living in a truly crapsack world. It doesn't harm GRRM's ability to write about how crapsack the world is, and it still breaks many fantasy norms. It's way better than his shit in the main series of books.

He can write when he actually wants to, but I think he just knows what sells and says "eh, why the fuck not?"

I just Lol'ed because we've already went through this topic in this very thread. I'd hope that there is more to talk about than this one thing.

Holy crap, there is. I didn't realize that.

...Holy crap, I don't have anything to add to the discussion which hasn't already been said.

Holy crap, this came up a second time already?
@ArenaSnow
If you're still up for doing a Battletech RP when summer rolls around, I actually wouldn't mind trying to make something like that work. Mechwarrior Online... I... Gah. How much premium time would I need to buy each month to be one of the two guys paying the bills?

I friggin' love Battletech.

You get a large group of people in a horror setting. Their job is to survive as long as possible against the odds. But if they do die, they return as (spirits/zombies/what have you) and try to kill their friends. Basically the idea was to see if anyone survives the night. Because it would be a relatively short RP with time stamps and when "night" ended the RP would end.

...yeah, see, that sounds like an awesome forum RP version of Werewolf. Sounds awesome. I mean that.

This is why I'm glad I made this thread: there are some seriously good ideas floating around here. You might be surprised at the traction you could get with that.
Derp, deleted because @Mentions won't work with edits. Right?
Yeah, the real sad thing here is that feminism is SUPPOSED to mean equality. That's how it all began, that's what the movement is supposed to be about. However, the perception of what the word means got warped somewhere along the way, and now there are people who are actual feminists who are lumped in with the... uh... less-about-equality-more-about-attacking-really-odd-things crowd.

And there ARE imbalances we need to address, real issues that feminists try to deal with. Wage imbalances, the female image in the media (see: how much darned makeup and editing goes into making women flawless), toys for girls still sending bad messages, etc. As an uncle, I get pretty distressed over this because I freakin' want any future daughters I may have to grow up in a world where they work for equal pay and respect. But... There IS that element of "feminism" out there which, much like my previous complaint on what have been called SJWs now, is missing the point / big issues.

As usual, internet drama, polarizing statements, people trying to be part of an out group, and otherwise lots of the generic internet stuff have all coalesced into a big mess and managed to turn a still valid movement into a mockery. Note: I'm talking about events that have gone on for I'd argue two decades or so. Feminism is supposed to be about equality, and sometimes I wonder how many people who proclaim themselves feminists actually understand that. It's not surprising people don't equate feminism with equality anymore.
