They say it's about the journey, not the destination. This is true of many things. Pizza delivery is not one of them.

TFW you know what you want to happen but the words aren't cooperating. Why is plot suddenly so much harder to write?

Glad to see I'm not the only follower of Lord Cato, god of wisdom, on this most auspicious Superb Owl Sunday.

Bio

I am an adult, though I don't usually act like it. I'm a voracious reader, and not overly picky about books. I am artistic in a variety of areas, including music, drawing, writing, and sculpting. I have a minor obsession with dragons, and love the color violet. Fantasy is my preferred genre, be it past, future, urban...as long as it has a fantasy flavor to it. I also like scifi, mystery, and some horror. I am crazy, and I like tormenting my characters. But I don't bite...much. ^.~

Everyone who's on the ground right now will stay on the ground without exceptional help.

Nikki has taken off with a running start on the island in the past. I know she won't be able to gain /much/ height that way, but it'd be enough for some gliding, at least. Also cliffs. And possibly trees, because this is Nikki we're talking about. So are we not doing any gliding at all, or just not going to be able to use it as a reliable means of travel?
@TheMinorFall It's me going on vacation. *sits on* Glad you're joining, and I hope you have a nice trip as well!

Backing away from the woman, Amuné’s shoulders encountered the cold stone of the far wall. The child didn’t trust the newcomer. She claimed they were alike, but only bad people were sent to the Stone. If someone wasn’t evil, then how would they end up here? She pulled the stuffed kitten from her belt, wanting the reassuring pressure of its soft face against her own. Her eyes widened as the woman removed one glove to show an arm apparently made of stone.

“How--” The question was quickly cut off, and the child pressed her lips shut. No, she shouldn’t be talking to this woman. Shouldn’t let her get near. The only explanation for an arm like that with glowing patterns on it was magic and magic was bad. Using magic was wrong, everyone knew that. It was why Amuné’d had to try so hard to keep from Seeing things, not that she’d been entirely successful. That was why she’d ended up where she was now, because of her visions and...

A shudder ran through her. No, she didn’t want to think about that. The strange woman speaking again was a welcome distraction, even if the girl would’ve rather not encountered her. Grace was a normal enough name. But the only reply given in return was a stiff shake of the child’s head.

Nikki: How do you go upside-down by accident -- and without noticing? And you may be the king of stunts, but I'm the queen -- and I'm better than you~

I dunno if she saw where he landed. Depends how close he is, I guess. ^.^;;

Unable to die? Amuné was surprised by the claim. The double-sound of the words, one language she didn’t know spoken, and another deeper meaning resonating with her soul, that surprised her too, but it bothered her far less than the dark things that waited at the borders of the world. Whatever the other girl’s power, the younger child wouldn’t turn away like everyone else did.

When asked to help, she wasn’t sure at first what was wanted. But as the strange teen worked to free herself from the mass of tubes, Amuné understood. Seeing them come free was unnerving, as was the lack of blood, and the child shuddered. But she wouldn’t let her unease decide her actions. The singer meant safety, or at least something safer, and she wouldn’t give that up if she could help it.

With the last of the lines removed, Amuné took a step back. What now? The other girl didn’t seem to be very strong, and considering how long she’d been there, the younger child was not surprised. It happened when a person had to stay in bed for a long time to get better -- when they got up, they were always weak and not just from being sick. But she was too small to be any use helping the teen out of her tangled cocoon. The child looked around, hoping to find something that might help, or inspire an idea. Instead she saw a woman in the doorway. She gasped and backed away, her expression frightened. The Stone was where all the worst people were sent. What sort of criminal now faced her? How could she get away -- and could she help the other girl escape too?

Mira went to her lover’s side when he bent over in pain, overriding his hissed protest and his halfhearted swats to look at the offending hand. But while the marking was there to stay, there was nothing to heal. “You’re a wuss, Trill,” she told him fondly. The elf grumbled something in reply and returned to cradling his hand. He wasn’t in the mood for joking, not at that moment.

The pair followed Idris as she lead them through the portal to a wide-open place with a large castle. Trill regretted the lack of trees, but the place was still lovely. His hand felt a bit better by then, though he wouldn’t soon forget his dislike for the child sage. Inside was bright and airy. The doors drew his eye, particularly the one with the swirl of colors, and he resolved to stay away from that one. He didn’t like the way it felt at all.

The change to a more wild place surprised Mira, as did the ensuing fight. Was that normal, she wondered, to attack someone at the drop of a hat? She tried to follow the battle with her eyes, but the pair moved far faster than anything she was used to tracking. Trill had promptly put the entire group between himself and the combatants, she noted. Typical of him. But his expression was somewhere between horrified and amused. The way the pair bantered, clearly they were on good terms. Still, it looked an awful lot like they were trying to kill each other. More proof that people who liked quests were crazy, he supposed. The wings surprised him. Winged elves were few and far between, and he’d encountered only a couple in the past.

And then the fight was abruptly over. Mira started forward at once, though she slowed a bit when she recognized one of Idris’s actions as putting the old elf’s shoulder back into its socket. “Are you both alright?” she asked, blue-grey eyes looking the pair over for other injuries that needed attention as she offered the older elf a hand. “If nothing else, I can ease the pain you two inflicted upon each other."
Between the two girls, they managed to help with Blin’s steering problem. The tomboy took the left, flying above that wing so she could dip down to push it with her feet when needed. Nikki, with her usual precision maneuvering, put her glider directly under the right wing of her friend, hardly any space at all between the two gliders. Fortunately they didn’t need to do much. Aside from the issue with steering, Blin’s glider was still in good condition and had no trouble staying airborne now that they could keep it steady.

Gaius and Lee were no longer in sight as the trio soared onward, travelling considerably farther than the knight and the young lady, who’d had to cut their flight short. Nikki didn’t even think about landing early. Their goal was the star, and while she’d have more or less followed Gaius were he around, she wasn’t the sort to deliberately hang back. Besides, the issue with Blin had driven all thought of the other damaged glider from her mind.

“Cloud-head, pay attention!” she said sharply after some time, seeing his focus was wandering. “You’re not going to be able to land the way you usually do. We can’t help you that low. It’s time to learn a roll-landing. Not as nice as a swoop and drop, but it’ll have to do.” The young woman quickly instructed Blin in the basic technique, giving as many pointers as she could. “Make sure you roll,” she cautioned. “It will help you absorb the impact.”

They finally drew close to the ground, and Nikki watched their altitude carefully. When they were only a dozen yards or so up, she knew it was time. They’d already slowed as much as they could, and there was nothing else they could do to help. “This is where we gotta drop back, Blin. Remember: jump, tuck, and roll. You can do it!” With that she dove slighting and cut her speed enough to stall, before recovering and going to land herself. Blin didn’t do to badly, she thought, though it wasn’t a very elegant landing. When he came to a stop, staring up at the sky, the boy just lay there. Nikki let her glider fold shut and approached, eyes widening. Was he -- asleep? No way, he’d /just/ been awake. “Wake up, sleepyhead,” she called, shaking him. “You okay? Still in one piece? That was a pretty good job, considering it was your first time.” The young lady grinned down at him.
*has more Cecil feels* I want him and Amune to sort things out so badly, but at the same time it's not even been a day and it's probably too soon. PACING ISSUES SUCK. >.< *hugs Cecil* It's okay, I'm here for you even if she's still all scared.
