Vespa Ruvina

The walk back to the Castle was one with deep contemplation and worry for her sister, Elina. Though she was loathe to leave the silver-haired girl alone, Vespa was a witch, and that entailed plenty of study and the honing of her skills. Still, perhaps she should have stayed with her. For weeks now, Elina had preferred solitude to mingling with her fellow witches, and seemed to like the outdoors better than the Castle. It occurred to Vespa that perhaps her sister was deeply troubled with their station in life, as feared individuals of power who were hunted by a specific guild, and that she wanted to get away with it.

But what could she do? She was just Vespa, not their mother Reyna. She could not bear to wrench Elina away from her long walks and constant daydreams. Just look at her, with her silver hair, red eyes and overall comely form - she was like a wraith, or a ghost, or a spirit in all senses, even in demeanor. Elina... was frail, vulnerable. And worst of all, too good for this world.

Vespa sighed. "Kings and queens do what they will... the rest of us, do as we must," she muttered. The quote, so old that all scriptures attributed it to 'Anonymous,' was sounding incredibly apt today.

Castle Bloodrose was a formidable fortress without and a luxurious palace within. Its library was expansive and its dungeons went deep into the earth. Coming into this Coven was the right choice, she thought. Had the two continued to wander, she did not know where they would be by now. Since first passing through the gaping, maw-like front gate that now shadowed her, her lore and skills in the art of Blood Magic had expanded greatly. Madame Bloodrose's generosity in taking her and Elina in was something that she admired very much, and what Vepsa wanted to repay by killing any Hunters who dared to assault her precious newfound sisterhood.

It was indeed the right choice. Even disregarding the steady waxing of her power, she had met Lorelai. Oh Lorelai. Just the thought of her turned her frown into an immediate smile. Navigating through torch-lit corridors lined with portraits of powerful witches now long passed, she sought to find the powerful witch whom she was proud to call her lover.

Lover. Oh, just the thought of the word made her blush. Vespa didn't know what Lorelai saw in her, but she didn't mind. In fact, she delighted in her affections. She hoped that Lorelai delighted in hers as well.

Elina Ruvina

Luna cowered as she never had before behind Elina's skirt, the fur along her curved spine standing on end. Meowing fierce retorts at Alltia and intense reprimands at Elina, to her dismay she found herself ignored. Elina continued to pet the large, white wolf and even the arrival of Lady Alexina was of no help. The two human ladies exchanged cordial greetings and lavished the foul beast with attention. It was an ugly wolf too, riddled and crisscrossed with scars almost its entire length and especially around its ugly skull. Luna would not have been surprised if the overgrown mutt had fleas! Yuck!

However, there came a conspicuous thump. Another wolf? Luna turned her furry little head and saw a human - a man. Apparently, he had fallen from a tree and - could that be fire? Fire on the grass, which he was trying but failing to extinguish, and now, fire upon the brush? It appeared to the cat that the man was feverishly muttering apologies, too.

"Oh my," Luna heard Elina say. Her master had taken a few steps towards the stranger. Her voice was flush with worry. "That's not- are you okay? I mean- wait," her voice choked a bit, "... pyromancy... could you be... a Hunter?"

A Hunter! Luna hissed at the man. Pyromancy, that was pyromancy what the man just did! The tree he was standing next to was on fire now. Did he intend to burn down the entire forest? Now, Luna was by no means as clever as her master or a talented mage - although, being the first ever wizard cat wasn't a bad prospect at all - but she did know some facts relevant to the continued protection of her master:

1.) That dogs, wolves and other mutts are barbaric beasts that are best left avoided.
2.) That there are only two kinds of human who are able to perform extraordinary feats over the lesser ones of their kind, feats like magic.
3.) That those two kinds of human are Witches and Hunters,
4.) And that Hunters and Witches are mortal enemies.

Elina was rather paralyzed at this point. She had not been expecting a Hunter. Could it be that he was stalking her the whole time, and she didn't know? The silver-haired girl turned towards Alexina, hands over her chest feeling the rising drumbeat of her heart.

"Alexina, what do we do? That man - he can't be a Hunter now, can he?"

Luna's meow was loud and fierce. Her bright blue eyes were wide with killing intent, as if she had just seen a fat and vulnerable mouse. "Kill him! Hunters are Witches' mortal enemies, and so they are my enemies too! Master, if you so wish it, I can claw his eyes out!"

@Aerandir@Meiyuki@Ellion
Is it Alexia or Alexina? I'm just going to write her name as Alexina until @Aerandir tells me otherwise.

Edit: Knock knock, it's a new post. Vespa's section is a little half-assed but Elina's section brought some much-needed characterization for her cat familiar, Luna. All in all, I'm content with it.

I've set Vespa off to see Lorelai. Hopefully, @Meiyuki can mention Vespa entering the room Lorelai is at and the two would exchange pleasant greetings, so we can have a foundation to get Vespa interacting with everyone else as well.
Sorry, been distracted as of late. Will read up on posts, catch up, and pop out another one of my own.
@Aerandir

Cool. I really don't want to have to make up entirely new characterization. I am completely happy with my older posts.
I should have a post up within 16 hours.
@Ariamis

Cool beans, boss. Edited my sheet accordingly.
Just waiting for @Ammokkx to post.
Elina and Vespa Ruvina

The Crystal Forest was a place of such great beauty that the sisters, Elina and Vespa Ruvina, at first had trouble comprehending that it was not man-made, but of natural origins. The dark, blue canopy overhead was thick to the point where sunlight hadn't touched the ground there for years, but the bioluminescent plant life, from the underbrush to the venerable trees, illuminated more than enough for the two to navigate without any trouble. Even the mushrooms glowed, and the atmosphere was straight out of a fantasy book. Everything was more or less suffused with beautiful cerulean hues.

Elina loved walks like this one. Vespa did too, sometimes, when she needed to cool off and relax. Often, they weren't together when they indulged in this small hobby due to conflicting schedules, but today it seemed that their free times coincided. So the sisters walked, side by side, silently to an unheard rhythm that only twins could experience. Nothing needed to be said, as they went with a serene grace and elegance befitting witches raised under high aristocratic standards. Both wore long, black gowns with frilled white cuffs that were comfortable and allowed the skin to breathe. Between their long skirts trailed Luna, Elina's feline familiar, who looked at their mystical surroundings with wonder.

While Elina was perfectly content to let the electric, buzzing hum of the Forest continue to soothe her ears, Vespa wanted to talk. Her bright irises like sapphires rolled slowly to the left to examine the figure of her wraith-like sister. Elina's gait was slow and carefree, and her eyes were closed. Her silver hair looked like tresses of mithril under the unique lighting conditions.

"Elina," she began softly. "How are your studies?"

The witch opened her eyes to reveal her crimson irises. Her expression was impassive, but there was a telltale crook to her lips.

"They're going fine."

Vespa sighed. "I know that look. That isn't good. What would Madame Bloodrose think?"

The stare between them lasted for a conspicuous moment, before Elina turned her cheek the other way. Her voice carried sorrow: "I'm not... the kind of person who can kill so easily."

Vespa shook her head. "Sister..."

They both stopped at the foot of a massive tree at the very heart of the Crystal Forest. Truly ancient, perhaps even dating back to that long-forgotten era before man even stepped upon the soil of this world, it radiated an aura titanic power and authority for something incapable of moving. Its bark was gnarled, ugly and thick. This tree had seen the fall of entire races and empires. In respect, the two sisters bowed. Then there was a content silence, as they admired its form.

"Hey Vespa," Elina said, while staring at the massive branches that twisted so high up.

"Yes, Elina?"

"Why were we born witches?"

Ah, that aggravating question. Elina had asked that many times recently, so much so that it was beginning to worry Vespa, but she could never offer an answer that would satisfy her sister.

"I don't know. But I do know that you should continue to hone our art of Blood Magic. I've offered to train with you before, but you've always refused."

There was a lump in Elina's throat, as she turned to meet her sister's gaze. "That's because... you kill the deer. And the rats, and the crows."

"Because death is the very basis of our powers," Vespa said patiently. "You know this."

Elina looked to the canopy again. "I don't like it."

"It's what we were born with."

"Which is why I am asking, why were we born as witches?"

Another sigh from Vespa. "You know I don't have an answer to that question. But we should make do with what we have. Do you know the saying, 'When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade?'"

"Yes?"

"It's what we should be doing."

"... I suppose."

Another silence, before it was Elina's turn to break it.

"Do you think the Hunters will find us?"

"They're not fools. They will find the Coven eventually. Madame Bloodrose is a notorious woman."

Elina's delicate eyelashes fluttered. "Why, then, did we come here, as opposed to returning to our castle, and back to Mother?"

"Because she threatened to kill us," Vespa said, far more brusquely and loudly than she intended.

Silver hair flashed through the air as Elina as she whipped her head towards her sister. "She was just angry because we had let her down. A mother wouldn't kill her children!"

"That-" Vespa hesitated, settling down. "That, I am not so sure."

Elina was about to retort, but restrained herself. Looking down to the ground, she saw a worried Luna. The cat's inquisitive meow made her smile, and she crouched down to scratch her reassuringly. It wasn't long before her familiar was purring.

"So this is what Fate has decided for us, huh?"

"Mhm. I guess so," Vespa nodded. "Kings and queens do what they will, while the rest of us-"

"-do what they must," Elina finished the quote. Luna began to circle her feet, delighting the way the witch's fingers ran across her belly.

"Say, Ellie," her tone was rather hurried. "I plan to begin reading Chapter VII of Alice's 'Further Explorations in the Bloody Arts' later. Maybe, you'd like to join me?"

She blinked and frowned a bit. "Maybe. I'll think about it."

"Alright," Vespa let the matter drop. This was going to be furthest extent at which she'd be able to push her sister. Walking away from the tree, she said, "I'm going back to the Castle. You can find me in my room. Will you be staying here?"

"Mhm. I'll see you later, Vespa."

Eventually, the sounds of Vespa's footsteps faded away, and Elina was left starkly alone, with only a white-furred cat to keep her company.
I am so satisfied with my first post in the other thread that I am way too unwilling to write up something new.
