Caine’s sudden appearance has Zooble taking a step back, but that’s all the ground they give before they cross their arms. They've picked a claw-and-glove combo today. Clover can’t imagine voluntarily picking a hand that wasn’t much better than those rigged claw machines. He’s gotten used to the broad leaves that serve as his “mittens”, but he misses the dexterity separate fingers offered. To each their own, I guess.

‘That’s really not much better than a regular adventure,’ Zooble says. Their gaze flicks to Jax as he steps up next to them to poke at Caine, but otherwise didn’t acknowledge him. ‘And where’s Ragatha? Why’d you summon all of us, but not her?’

While they’re hounding Caine, Clover finds himself warming up to the idea of an in-house adventure. Whatever wacky plot Caine has in mind, at least he’ll be throwing it at them in a familiar environment. No surprises – or at least, not much more than usual.

‘You know, I don’t think I’ve actually seen you get your mask fixed,’ Pomni is saying to Gangle. ‘It’s always back to normal by the time we go on the next adventure. Does it reset by itself?’

Caine fixes it sometimes, Clover’s pretty sure, but the AI’s attention span is spotty at best and he’s already caught up with Zooble’s usual evasiveness. He debates joining Snix on the floor, but Caine’s here and they’ll probably be moving again in a minute or two. It isn’t worth the effort.

In the end, he sticks by Patch’s side and waits for the day’s shenanigans to begin.

Caught in a Snare

Damien’s admission had struck a nerve that Vicis hadn’t even known he had.

Death in battle was an action of great reverence among the humans. It mattered not to them that they were putting a premature end to their pittance of a lifespan; the honour of giving their hearts up for their so flaunted “greater good” was a satisfactory enough reward that none of them thought twice about it. Little better than the sheep they reared, those Blessed Knights – and the simple peasants who egged them on were worse. Vicis had no love for most humans, but the idea of forfeiting one’s life for such petty reasons was beyond him.

That Damien had attempted at all curdled the dinner inching through his stomach.

But there was no time to ask any questions. Damien was still going, spilling frantic words, gripping his horns so tight that Vicis wondered if they might snap. Their surroundings flickered like a bad illusion spell between the cave and another place that seemed more... constructed. Polished wood. Leather, painted in stark colour. Potted agriculture hanging from the ceiling. Unusual potted agriculture, considering the vines creeping downwards towards Damien.

‘Damien.’

Polished wood and leather snapped into place. The vines snatched Damien up into shadows where the ceiling used to be. That made for an exceedingly easy decision to make amidst the noise of conflicting thoughts and emotion running through Vicis’ head right then.

Quick as a blink, he coiled into a tight spring and leaped after Damien.

Now, Elder Wyrms couldn’t fly, but they were capable of leaping great heights. Their monstrous length and size were more than simple ostentatious features, after all. That also meant that when his tail pincers snagged onto the back of Silas’ shirt, Vicis didn’t notice, for the weight of a human dangling off his tail was hardly anything substantial.

Instead, he kept his focus upward as the dining establishment faded away into a murky abyss.

• Vicis leaps after Damien without a thought, and one of his tail pincers hooks into Silas' shirt by accident. Whoops!
• Whether this breaks Silas' perception of Vicis as a human or if he perceives a human substitution for this action, I'm okay with either.

‘Sleep okay?’

Clover shrugs.

‘Would be nice if I was still asleep,’ he says. ‘But we can’t always get what we want.’

It is somewhat odd that Caine isn’t already around to greet the people he literally dragged out of bed to play with, but Clover isn’t one to question manic, peppy AIs with an unhealthy obsession with game design. He’s just here, the way he was here yesterday, and the day before that, and so on.

Zooble, on the other hand, takes the ringmaster’s absence with much more enthusiasm.

‘Works for me,’ they say in response to Snix’s grumbling. ‘I’m going before he comes back.’

They seem unconcerned with the threat of being dragged back here, but Clover supposes Zooble wouldn’t be Zooble if they didn’t try ducking out of an adventure at every opportunity. Pomni steps up and, for a brief moment, he thinks she’s about to convince Zooble to wait too.

‘If you’re heading back to the rooms, could you see if Ragatha’s okay?’ she says instead. ‘I don’t know why Caine would summon all of us except her.’

‘Maybe he just forgot,’ they say, shrugging. ‘But sure, I’ll check on her.’

As they wander off, Patch starts musing on the day’s adventure.

‘Whatever it is, it’s not going to be a smooth ride,’ says Clover. ‘I don’t think the guy understands the definition of “chill”.’

but if it helps, I will yap in the OOC - or DM the relevant ppl if it is some Super Secret Juicy thing - if I have a certain idea I want to do w my OC that's related w the CCs + you guys' OCs to avoid le toe-stepping

you've given me smtg to think about though, 'cause yeah... Clover should have some thoughts on Kaufmo and etc. Do we know when Ribbit extracted in canon? Was it when everyone was present or like kind of right before Kaufmo tapped out?

(this sound is directed at AI, not u lol) you're asking someone who's got a massive hate boner for genAI so this news disgusts me, as unsurprising as it is. but if it's had an effect on the research literature, I've not seen it yet, mostly 'cause I'm leaning more towards sociolinguistic stuff than translation stuff.

wouldn't be surprising if it has anyway, p sure a big chunk of academia in recent years has been chatgpt'd to hell 😔
