Mantis was able to move away from the pyramid fast enough before its soul-sucking grasp could take hold. She managed to rendezvous with Xune, who had her own problems. It seems her magic was failing against the aura of the pyramid. And then came the worst part of it when new undead came from the structure’s entrance. But this time, they were not some simple skeletons but magically reinforced units.

Mantis bit her lip. Two spearwielding skeletons lunged at her. The two launched arcs of soul fire beyond the spear’s normal reach. Mantis tried to evade the attacks with [Agile evade]. This was annoying. With the skeletons using tech with such a range, it was impossible for the hunter to effectively counter. Not to mention there were two of them. If it were a one-on-one, she might be able to turn the tide. But Mantis would not press her luck against multiple opponents. especially in the open of the scorched battlefield. That was when Xune ordered the retreat. Mantis didn’t hesitate. She [Backwards dash], keeping an eye on the two spearbearers to see if they would follow her and if they would start to show some oddities. They were controlled by the pyramid. That means that there must also be a range that the thing can keep full control of such powerful minions. And when its control starts to waver. There will be an opportunity to counter.

Mantis reached the entrance of the pyramid without any problems. She had positioned herself in the blind spot of the opening, ready to ambush anyone who wanted to leave while the rest of the group was still catching up. But then something happened. The pyramid started to emit a green glow that was drawing in all the magical residue from the field.
The pull also tried to take hold of Mantis. But the moment she noticed the powers grasping for her soul, the elf kicked off the side of the pyramid using [Dash] to speed away from it until its influence on her was no more.

"How annoying" Mantis thought as she looked back at the pyramid. How were they going to enter the thing if it tries to pull out their souls when they get close to it?
When Xune and her skelebros caught up to her, Mantis matched their pace. {"Hey boss? Any ideas how we can get inside?"} Mantis said as she ran beside the drider.

There was no commander ordering the undead horde. Nor was there a clear, smaller conduit from which the flow of undead was steered. That means in the absence of the logical, the simple must be the truth. Mantis was able to incapacitate her target, leaving the zombie deer squirming on the ground without legs to find footing. Her scan of the field did not bring up any sign of something on the field directing the zombie masses. Then that leaves the pyramid itself as the only logical target to end the never-ending horde itself. Let alone the glowing lines on the bloody thing and the fact that it is spewing out that necrotic mist that seems to bring forth more of the undead was a dead givaway…

{"I FIGURED AS MUCH THAT THE PYRAMID WAS INVOLVED… IF YOU NEED SOME HELP, SAY SO, AND I WILL CUT YOU A PATH!"} The elf yelled back at the Drider. But her services in trying to cut a path for the boss was not needed as the spider had a better plan. Nuke the field with magic and then run for the entrance. a better idea than what Mantis could have provided.

As Xune started casting her spell, Mantis readied herself. And as the blue and green flames of Xune’s spell scorched the undead horde off the field Mantis dashed towards the pyramid without missing a beat Shooting ahead of the rest to reach the entrance as fast as possible. Once she reached the pyramid, Mantis positioned herself in the blind spot right next to the door. Taking her weapon in hand and ready to [blindside] anything that might come out of the entrance before the rest would catch up.

"I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Lest you want everyone to know that you try to mug another contestant without reason" Noelle said to Edwin, still with her back turned to him when she noticed he was pointing his lance at her. A pride so easily triggered that he forgets they were still surrounded by other visitors to the festival.
As the pup started writhing in Noelle’s arms, the mermaid let go of the beast without resistance. She saw it run to Edwin, pawing at his greaves to get his attention, and then run forward down the corridor. It was clear what it wanted to say. Aedri was in danger. Noelle followed without missing a beat till they reached the plaza with all the screens.

Noelle looked at the screens that showed clips from the various lanes. Even a replay of her and Edwin’s fight. Seeing it, she realised how much luck their opponents had to exit that fight with minimal damage, or was it just that her healing was so powerful? Anyway, those two were lucky for that.
Her eyes were glued to the screens. The mana beast, who were also watching the screens, had led them here to see something. And then it happened. The screen jumped to the feed of lane seven. She saw the blond girl and instantaneously recognised her as Aedri. But something was wrong. Where others looked away, distracted by brighter and shinier things, Noelle kept looking. There was another entity. An entity that tried to hide its presence from the feed. And Noelle already had an idea who it might be. The snarling of the mana pup pretty much confirmed that it was the one she thought of. <"It’s him!"> eyes narrowed, and her fin-like ears pressed against the side of her head. She glared at the screen for a second before she rushed after Edwin and the mana beast.

Arriving at lane seven, Noelle witnessed what happened inside from behind the invisible barrier. When the barrier came down, Noelle didn’t jump in like Edwin and the extremely buffed cat person who she doesn’t recognise. Rather, she slowly walked onto the field. Seething with rage, Noelle looked towards the masked freak. <"You!.. How dare you!?>" She said under her breath as she took her lyre in hand. <"GET OFF HER!!!"> With that said, Noelle unleashed her [Rage unleashed: Sirens Scream]. A blast of sound erupted from the mermaid’s mouth, targeting the masked man, blasting his ears out with an extremely loud screech strong enough to blast their victims' brains ears out. Once the scream was over, Noelle came to her senses and remembered the blond girl. "Miss!" She strummed her harp, and [curing water: water veil] enveloped Aedrianna. The water was cool and soothing, healing the girl from pain. Noelle’s gaze was fully focused on Aedri, making sure the girl was not harmed too seriously.

Some time has passed since Mantis left the tomb of the necromancer. Now she found herself in the Fae See with Xune, Ryker and a bunch of hired rations looking for something. She started to get a bit more used to the aether of this new world. regaining some of her former strength. She also managed to get herself a nice new catalyst trinket so she could use magic. Although what magic was still the question. But she will figure it out.

As they come closer to their target, the forest around them, the weather around them changes. vile and twisted. A normal person would say it looked and felt wrong. Mantis found it intriguing. How tasteful would the person be that conjures such an amount of aether? The maniac could not wait to find out.
Mantis was stalking the group from the shadows. scouting around, making sure no one was going to surprise them.
As they approached the pyramid, Mantis rejoined the group. Upon witnessing the rise of the undead, Mantis let out a disappointed groan. Again with the undead. Although these seem to have at least a bit of meat on their bones. Still, undead meat probably doesn’t taste as good as fresh meat.

The fighting started. Idiots ran in to fight the undead things, and spells were thrown. One of their guides was pulled into the pyramid by some unseen force. Mantis is going to make that thing pay for stealing her food!. Mantis stayed put. Rather than rush in, she took the moment to evaluate the battlefield, picking her prey and the best way to strike them.
{"Xune… can you detect the leader of these rotten? or the catalyst that is summoning them/ the faster we take those out, the sooner we can get this under control with as little food waste…"} The elf said to the Drider as she brandished her weapon in her hand. {"Let me know when you find either of them"}. With that said, Mantis dashed forward towards one of the rushing deer. Facing the thing head-on in some game of chicken. As the two almost seemed to collide Mantis dodged to the side quickly slashing at the beast’s front leg with [evading slash] in an attempt to sever it, crippling the beast so it can no longer pose any real threat. to make sure the deal was done Mantis used the after motion of the slash to launch another [Severing slash] but this time to the beast’s hind leg. Her gaze was still searching around the field to spot the creature that looked like they were in command of the undead.

It was over. The fighter and the cantor ultimately fell to the ground unconscious. Due to the darkness, rain and Noelle’s song. Noelle’s barrier slowly lowered her to the ground before vanishing. As the girl touched ground, her mermaid tail reverted to human legs. Noelle wabbled for a second, adjusting to having legs again, but soon regained her footing. "Thank the spirits this is over" she thought, letting out a soft sigh. She watched the attendants rush in to secure their fallen opponents before she was ushered out of the lane. Thankfully, their opponents seem to be alive. In terrible shape but alive. That was a big relief to the mermaid. Perhaps her song did save them from worse in the end.

When Noelle exited the lane, she suddenly felt a wave of nausea run over her. The consequence of using so much power in one move, and partly due to accepting the power of the voice. But by far not the intensity she felt due to the sickness. Noelle managed to alleviate the nausea with some calm breathing and a whole heap of stubbornness.
She had heard Edwin’s demand to talk as they left the arena. But Noelle had no intention to humour the man. She had more pressing matters than to converse with such a creepy, self-righteous oaf. Unfortunately, he had positioned himself next to the mana pup, still demanding to talk. She had to admit he really looked scary with how the light hit his cheekbones. Noelle threw the man a glare before rolling her eyes and approaching the mana pup.
"What’s the matter? Have you found her?" Noelle asked the pup, crouching down, completely ignoring Edwin at first. She then looked in the direction where the pup was staring "She’s over there, isn’t she?... And it’s bad… Let’s not waste a moment." Noelle picked up the pup and held it in her arms.

There was still Edwin, who wanted some answers from her. Noelle turned to the black knight, glaring at him with suspicion.
"Why you want to know? I haven’t stolen it if that is what you’re implying. It just followed me from the eastern wing… And No. I’m not going to give it to you, nor can you buy it from me. The only one I'm going to give it to is its rightful owner. So would you kindly stop bothering me. I have more urgent matters to attend to than wasting time talking to you, okay!?" She said to him, a hint of worry in her voice, before turning on her feet and starting walking away in the direction of the hall where the pup was looking before the knight could retort. She wanted to find Aedrianna as fast as possible before it was too late.

The tide of the battle turned in an instant. Edwin’s darkness and Noelle’s rain overwhelmed their opponents, leaving them broken. But their pride was still that strong, keeping the brawler and the cantor holding on.
"Please. Just surrender. There is no way you can win, and you must realise it. So just stop before real harm can befall you," Noelle silently begged, seeing their opponents struggle. Was their pride so great that they would rather die than admit defeat? Noelle could only feel pity for them. Nonetheless, it was better to mercifully take their opponent down with as little pain as possible.

But when she noticed Edwin starting to power up, the mermaid’s heart sank. Was he seriously planning to kill their opponents? Noelle knew she had to do something and quickly.
"L̴e̴t̵ ̴m̷e̸ ̵h̶e̷l̷p̴ ̴y̶o̴u̴" She suddenly heard in her head.

"Fine… just this once"
Noelle adjusted her stance as her barrier shifted around her. Lifting her up through its current while the girl underwent her [Siren transformation]. Noelle’s legs turned into a fishtail as she was lifted on top of her barrier. Azure blue eyes with a yellow ring around the pupil looked down on the field.

Noelle placed her fingers on her harp, and when she started to play, something changed throughout the arena. As if the sounds of the world suddenly felt softer. But in reality, it was Noelle’s [Siren song]. The song’s sound demanding attention, to listen, to be heard. Noelle went all out, making the song’s magic affect everyone but herself who hears it if the barrier of the lane fails to stop the magic of the song. The soothing melodies of healing softly lull anyone that fell for its charm into a comfortable sleep. They would feel the warmth of a loving embrace. Like that of a mother or loving partner. But those who were able to resist would not feel the warmth. They will feel an eerie cold touch on their consciousness, trying to invite them into the darkness of sleep. Edwin would also be tested to the song but would resist the lulling effect, nor would it stop him from unleashing the wave of dankness.
While playing, Noelle closed her eyes. Tears started to crawl down her cheeks. She hoped in her heart that the song would be able to save her opponents. To stop their futile, prideful struggle and that their lives be spared from Edwin’s wrath. But that was all now in fate’s hands.

Noelle kept playing. She witnessed how the cantor made openings within the mist that she spread. Valuable time that Noelle needed to trigger her plan. "Come on! Come on! Activate already" She remained focused. Regulating her breathing, not getting distracted. Still not going all out. But it is as they say. The sea is always calm right before the storm.

The flautist tried to disrupt the mermaid’s concentration with its double current. But this was a little too late. "HERE WE GO!!" Noelle shifted her feet, and glowing lines started to appear on the ground around her, forming a magic circle. Noelle smiled confidently as her music shifted to a more upbeat tone. Full of excitement and a sense of adventure, and wonder. The circle radiated in the rhythm of the song.

"The storm has come!" Noelle said. Her eyes were glowing with magic as water started to appear around her feet, moving in a spiralling motion. Noelle made an upward swinging motion, and the water around her feet shot up, forming a [Water barrier]. A cylindrical barrier of water rose up, protecting Noelle from any interference they thought of sending her way. Her song was still audible from within the pillar of water. From the top of the barrier, water was cast into the air. The water then fell as rain over the whole field. As the rain falls, all besides Edwin and Noelle herself would be affected by [The weight of rain], noticing the water feels exceptionally heavy on them as the falling water saps their strength. A soft chuckle could be heard from Noelle within her barrier. All that was visible of her was a shadowy contour of her body and the yellow glow of her eyes.

Noelle was slowly moving towards the location of the next round when the projection suddenly showed a new variable for the round to come. The round will be between pairs. Noelle was not looking forward to teaming up with any of these prideful snobs. Cooperation was necessary for working in pairs. But she doubts that that would be in the dictionary of many of the remaining contestants. At least that means the opponents will also be a bunch of selfish idiots.
Noelle looked with anticipation to see who was going to be her partner this round. A certain Edwin Stormcrest was going to be her partner. That already sounded like this one was going to be a handful. But it was not like she had much of a choice.

Noelle headed towards the lane indicated by her name. Meanwhile, she kept her eyes and ears perked, hoping she could catch a glimpse of the blond girl with the coloured tips. But no luck there. The girl remained nowhere to be seen. Noelle now really started to get worried that something had happened to the girl.

When she arrived at the entrance to the lane, that was when she met her “partner”. His piercing gaze let a cold shiver run down the mermaid's spine. The guy was intimidating. But Noelle was not going to let him look down on her like that. She met his glare with one of her own. The man then started talking about knowing the owner of the mana beast. Again, bringing up the name Aedrianna Belmote. And wanting to know why she had the beast with her. Noelle was suspicious of the guy. Did he just think he could claim the mana beast for his own? "No!" She turned the beast away from Edwin while keeping her glare fixed at him "I’m not going to let you have him"
When the staredown was over, Noelle let out a soft sigh and softly scratched the mana pup's head. What a way to start this temporary alliance. Noelle put the mana pup down as it was time for her to enter the ring. "Stay here. This won't take long, and then we will look for 'her'. She did advance to this round, if I remember correctly, so she must be in one of the rings at this moment. So it must be easy to find her… right…" She said to the mana beast before straightening up and entering the ring.

Their opponents were already there. A spell-fist fighter and a flute-playing cantor. Noelle got her lyre in hand and pondered what she would do. The goal of the round was to outperform the other performer. Hindering them was permitted, as why else would the fighters have been permitted to use “protective engagement”? Fortunately for her, Noelle’s music was her weapon. But she can’t reveal that too quickly. Or at least not to the extent of her capabilities.
<"Calling someone uncouth for its style of fighting. Can’t say I’m surprised from a churlish man like you,"> she said blandly as she looked at Edwin with an unimpressed glare when he taunted the fist fighter. "Let’s not waste time. You just focus on keeping me safe and don’t disappoint me!" Noelle spoke, getting in place and and started playing in her harp.

Her music was calm and ethereal. A sound of mystery and the sea. With the start of the song, Noelle let the magic flow through her music and snuck in an [Empowering melody], raising both her and Edwin's combat ability. With that in place, Noelle opened her eyes. She noticed that the flautist caused the wind to blow around the arena. She could work with that. Noelle adjusted her tone, and [Misty bubbles] started to appear around the girl. Unlike her earlier performance, where the bubbles were translucent, these bubbles looked cloudy. As the bubbles drifted, they were picked up by the wind current of the flautist's circulating wind and spread around the arena. As the bubbles drifted around, one by one they started to pop, releasing the mist inside them. At the same time, Noelle triggered [spreading mist]. A light blanket of mist appeared around the mermaid’s feet, obscuring the view of the ground beneath it. With this, the stage was set. Although her performance so far was coordinated and executed with elegance. Keen eyes could tell that she was still holding back for something. What could the girl be planning?
