Jimbo that's not right. Humans are a social creature, there's not a single one who can truly survive on their own. Even those who seem to be able can only do so because they learned from others.

As long as you can. Then you'll get a break and try another finger, then repeat until you can focus it as easily as breathing. The threat of danger, or even death, will help you focus and will even somewhat increase your ability.
