About Me

I'm a roleplayer by night, but by day I'm a software engineer. I have been programming in some capacity since I was eight, and once I discovered programming I simply never stopped writing code. Some of that code I've written was for this very website, and maybe some day I'll add some more. However, most of my work is done in boring corporate land.

I discovered programming in a game called ROBLOX, and coincidentally that is also where I first discovered roleplaying. One day I was exploring the forums, and noticed a roleplaying section. Curious, I took a look and I was instantly hooked. The content was mostly in the Free RP level, with a small amount of Casual tier games, but at the time even that was high quality content to me. Over the years my interest in the game faded, and although I continued programming after ultimately leaving the community, I did not continue roleplaying.

Years later, I gradually started wanting to get back into roleplaying. I began googling around, and after looking at a few different websites I finally decided that the Guild seemed to be the best of them all. I made an account on December 13, 2014, and started jumping into some games; I quickly decided on sticking to mostly High Casual, but eventually moved more towards Advanced as I realized that most of the games I was in were easily at that level anyway. This was right around the time that Mahz was working on rebuilding the website from the ground up, and after chatting with him for a while in the IRC during some site downtime I decided that I wanted to help.

I ultimately didn't contribute too much, but nevertheless I was the first (and so far, only one of two?) non-anonymous users to help Mahz with developing the website. As a reward, after he implemented the trophy system I was awarded the special Benevolent Cyberpunk trophy, which gives me a special userbit that looks like this:

On mobile, I have to select the reply button twice. The first time causes the ratings to appear, and the second time actually selects the reply button.
I'm on mobile right now, and this isn't happening for me. If I tap the quote button the quote is made after a second, simultaneous to the ratings popping up.

I wasn't saying it'd be hard to do or prohibitive, @Captain Jordan, but I do think it isn't really necessary, and complicates things more than it needs to be. In most cases, a simple list can describe a roleplay well enough for someone to know if they will be interested in more info or not. Of course there will be some niche ones that won't have great tags, but fantasy; fandom, modern, etc should be broad enough to be applicable. Just my two cents.

Perhaps custom tags would be ideal.
But that would require moderation, and would make filtering impossible. It's easier to have a broad list of tags, fit for most (if not all) circumstances while keeping the list manageable.
Kyle Messor Featuring: Amy Snow As Kyle stared into the fire, sitting alone on a makeshift log bench, he was utterly puzzled. Death rarely spoke when there wasn't, well, death nearby, and when it did it was always calm, albeit possibly irritated at Kyle for one reason or another. But Death was speaking – screaming, rather – to him now, and as he looked around, it was clear to Kyle that nobody was dying any time soon. Even worse, Kyle had no idea what Death was throwing a fit about – it was all in Latin. He could make out a few words though: cheat, a number – it could be 40, 400, or 4000; he doesn't know Latin well enough to tell – and so close. Alone, these details make absolutely no sense, and thinking about it is only making his headache worse. Kyle groaned, rubbing his temples. A few moments later, he heard someone stop, behind him. They whispered something to the other girls they were walking with, and approached Kyle cautiously. "Kyle?" Amy asked, concerned. "Are you okay? You look pale, and in pain." She sat down on the log next to him. Kyle looked up at her. That girl from the library... Amy, I think? "No, I'm–I'm fine," he answered, gritting his teeth in obvious pain. Can you please shut up already? he inwardly chided Death angrily. LOREM IPSUM DOLOR SIT AMET, CON SECTETUR ADIPISCING ELIT! Death responded. Kyle groaned. Amy was not convinced. “Are you sure? It looks to me like more than just a headache,” she challenged quietly. Kyle looked at her annoyed, knowing he was fighting a losing battle. “I am fine, Amy.” He sighed, looking at the fire. “I expect your friends will be getting tired of waiting,” he added. Amy looked over her shoulder at Zaylin and Luca. After a moment, she learned towards Kyle and whispered in his ear, “I know what you are.” If it was possible, Kyle became even more pale. “You… you do?” he said, worried. Amy looked at Kyle like a puzzle that desperately needed solving, before laughing. “Yes, you’re sick of course! C’mon, let me take you to the nurse. Maybe she has some aspirin?” she insisted. Sighing again, Kyle reluctantly stood up and followed her, winding through the crowd in search of the nurse.

A limitation of "x posts to graduate" is that someone could spam out posts and graduate, in which case they'll have privileges until they are caught out, at which point it may be too late. Of course, I'm sure you have already considered that. How about a minimum time AND post requirement (not just OR)? This means participating members of the community who have been around some time would be promoted. Of course, you'd include your more sophisticated factors too.
Or only allow 'New Members' to post once per x minutes, and if they keep posting exactly x minutes after the last it's very likely they are a spammer trying to game the system, and it can be detected and handled appropriately. EDIT: Or maybe require that everyone does a captcha before being graduated into the next tier, or at least for the first graduation. That would filter out all the bots, at least.

<Snipped quote by KeysOfKayes> Nice intuition, plausible enough to make me have another look at the code. But I can confirm that it shouldn't be doing this according to the docs. Source code: https://github.com/danneu/guild/blob/49d5cedbdc621cda3a345022bbb0080bb4a77bdc/server/avatar.js#L85 image.resize(150, 200, '>') I'll take another look if other people report an issue uploading exact-dimension avatars. I couldn't reproduce the issue myself.
My avatar is exact-dimensions and I had no trouble.

<Snipped quote by Mahz> I've noticed it took a (relatively) long time for several people I roleplay with to notice this change and upload a new avatar. Some of them still haven't done so. You could argue that this means that some people don't really care about their avatars, but it can also be interpreted to mean that this implementation is too vague.
I'd think its mostly that they haven't noticed - the post itself is far more important than the metadata (especially in an RP) so it isn't unreasonable that they could have simply neglected the fact that their avatars are missing. Just a thought.

Or you can stop worrying about whether to use one topic or two, and just use an announcement on the home page itself like was initially suggested. A lot of people aren't going to pay attention to if there is a new post in the news section (especially when this thread is almost definitely going to hide the actual update thread as latest post). They will pay attention to a big announcement box in their face (such as when it said "guild is having difficulties etc" before the rewrite).

But I did just push up a change: The guild now resizes images and hosts them itself. - Max avatar dimensions changed from 150x150 to 150x200 (150px wide, 200px tall) - You can choose an image larger than 150x150 and the guild will resize it to 150x200 for you (maintaining aspect ratio) - You must upload your old avatar manually to move it into the new system. In a week or so, I'll be removing all old avatars. If you go to your "Edit Avatar" form, you'll be able to access your old avatar so that you can conveniently upload it into the new system. - Performance boost on pages that display avatars since you use my fast host and I aggressively cache avatars. Lemme know if you have an issue. I also ask that you don't try to break the upload system by selecting non-images or massive images. It's kinda fragile.

Okay thanks for quelling my concern! ^^ Also one more thing: Say I want to copy/paste a CS but when I paste it, it loses its formatting, so if it had boldness, line breaks, eat, it comes a big blob of text that I need to tweak myself (so much work!). Is this supposed to happen? Because I thought a few days ago, you could copy/paste and formatting would remain. (unless of course you paste as plain text...)
Click on 'View Raw' in the top right, and copy the CS from there. That way, all the formatting is already done for you.
