Whatever the "sign" is can be whatever you want it to be! It'll be different for them both.
Something tailored specifically to motivate them toward this goal.

HEY. @Sophrus Do you wanna start this off at a centralized location. Like. "Y'all both wake up in this spot and quest giver gives the quest." They start going together to do this thing while becoming familiar with each other along the way. But still having major difficulties en route. And then a straight up TEAM LOSS because of said difficulties.

OR

Do you want to start with individual places but, something like a "sign" appears to each character telling them where to go and what to do.
Like they both end up getting motivated to go to the lair of Boss #1. And they both die horribly. Then wake up in the ghost train station. THEN there's the cackling old lady quest giver?

My heart's pointing toward option 2 the most.
