Name: Icarai Quinn Hawthorne

Date of Birth: 09-12-2036

Physical Description: Icarai is a tall, slender man. His hair is jet black, combed and parted neatly to the right--and the sides are buzzed. He has piercing blue eyes, which exude intelligence. The face of the man is clean-shaven and a pine-scented cologne is usually lingering about him. A golden necklace dangles from his neck, resting upon his tanned skin, which is revealed with an unbuttoned long-sleeve white dress shirt. Said dress shirt is tucked neatly underneath black dress slacks and black dress belt.

Pearly whites gleam when Icarai smiles, which he nearly always does. His canines are sharp, and often are intimidating. Crow's feet stretch from the corner of his piercing eyes. His cheek bones are high and set upon an angular jawline. Beneath his clothing, he is adorned with various tattoos. "Redemption" is displayed beneath his collar bone, on his taut pectorals. On the right shoulder, down the length of his bicep and tricep, stopping at the elbow, is a half-sleeve depicting a battle between angels and demons. A crescent moon over a dark forest is artistically placed on his left bicep. "LIVE" is inked across his right knuckles; it is the only visible tattoo besides: "Redemption"-- if the shirt is unbuttoned further.

Profession: Gambler, convict, gangster, thug, goon, thief.

Background: Born September 12th, 2036, Icarai was raised in the suburbs of Detroit, MI, where he often found himself in trouble with the law and street gangs. He was a skilled pickpocket and often was clobbered when caught; which trained him to not get caught. At the age of 10 he moved to Las Vegas, NV to live with his uncle Sully, after his widowed mother overdosed on prescription drugs. Uncle Sully was a notorious pool shark, gambler, hustler, playboy, and whatever else put a bad taste in your mouth, THAT was Sully. He also became a quick mentor to Icarai, whom adapted the Las Vegas live style rather quickly.

In 2050, a world-wide energy crisis had stricken the planet--but the neons were kept lit in Vegas. Murder, prostitution, and illegal gambling were at an all-time high. Icarai was 14 years of age when he killed his first man. A game of pool had turned for the worst in a hole-in-the-wall bar on the south end of town, resulting in uncle Sully's brains being beat from his head by a group of three Italian thugs. Sully managed to hold his own with the men, knocking one out cold and fending the other two off with a pool stick, until they finally pounced and overpowered him, a portly man whom obviously enjoyed his pasta too much brought his size twelve down several times on Sully's temple. Icarai, infuriated, charged the two men whom had their back unguarded. A pool stick was snapped on the back of the second man's head, laying him low next to the corpse of Sully. The portly man howled in agony as a shard of the pool stick penetrated his right side, sinking deep and puncturing his liver. He bled to death rather quickly. Icarai tore a golden chain from Sully's neck whilst looking away at his uncle's horrid expression.

Icarai then fled the bar through a cob-webbed corridor behind the DJ stand, and onto the back streets of Vegas. A mob of patrons attempted to pursue him, but were quickly distanced by the swift teen. The teen then visited uncle Sully's apartment, quickly packing his things and a few of Sully's as well, (including some cigarettes.) He bolted then, quick as his legs would allow, a classical CCR song blasting in his mind as fear and adrenaline (and perhaps unseen forces) carried him into the desert..

(I thoroughly enjoy revealing my character's history, but I enjoy doing so as I post, giving bits and pieces as I go to further acquaint the reader with the individual.)

Personality: Icarai is a calm and collected individual. He enjoys smoking a cigarette and is always seen with one dangling from his lips. An aura of professionalism and experience radiates from his tall, slender form. Grinning always, Icarai is in fact a menacing man. Evil personified. A betrayer, Icarai gambles with emotions much like his profession, gloating over woe and misfortune. He is a business man however, and always has a deal to strike, typically to only sate his lust for greed and power. He is an interloper, and perhaps not a man at all?

If the kids broke something it was Ottos fault and so he was punished.

He tried running away but was always brought back to the hell that was the orphanage. He soon realized he had to stop running, one day the kids picked on him they pushed him. He stumbled but regained his footing and shoved back. The kids didn't like the fact he was fighting back they may have had the numbers but he had the size and reach. He started swinging punches until he was the only kid that was still in the room.

He was bruised and cut but the other kids ran away from him, from that day forth no one bothered him. The kids stayed away but other kids stayed near him for protection. It wasn't long before Otto was on the ground looking at the man the man laughed again “ kid I like you I will help you” said the man.

From that day on the man refined Otto's fighting skill Otto fought in underground fights was a hired hand and a bodyguard. Otto quit stealing for he was making big bucks fighting and protecting people sometimes scum other times decent people.

Personality: Otto exudes professionalism the world is his oyster. He rarely talks because he feels his actions speak louder than words. He usually grunts if something displeases him. But Otto also has a policy of not taking shit from people. He will not harm women or the elderly unless it comes down to it or if it interferes with a contract he has.

Yeah, I've always wondered that myself. Why on earth is it month first? It's just so much easier with the day before hand.

Apparently, according to Wikipedia, it's a rather modern quirk of the United States:

Wikipedia article on calendar dates said
Gregorian, month-day-year (MDY)

This sequence is used primarily in the United States. This date format was commonly used alongside the little-endian form (DMY) in the United Kingdom until the mid-20th century and can be found in both defunct and modern print media such as the London Gazette and The Times, respectively.

I think the best way to remove ambiguity is to use the full version rather than the number abbreviations (e.g. 5th Sep. or Sep. 5th), and if you do use the abbreviations, use YYYY/MM/DD. :) The descending order should get across even to us loony Yanks.

Anyway, I'm still around, working on my CS little by little. I wanted to ask you, Pellegrino, how many days away from the Great War are we going to be, specifically?

I like that compromise imperfectionist.
And I'm not sure about that one either but something tells me it's close.
Also how do we survive the intense radiation out there? Or are we side tracking that?

Oh, the radiation's a huge part of my character concept!

:( I hope is isn't glossed over, in the story. I'll admit, though, I don't know how the human characters are going to survive (at least in Portland, where the bombs would have hit the hardest).

Well in the games the reason why it's 200 years later is because that's when the the radiation has become liveable, In reality the half life would be about a thousand years to decay but I'll not get into that :P

You know, I've wondered about that for a while... According to this, it really wouldn't take all that long at all for radiation/fallout levels to drop into manageable ranges (especially in the radiation-obsessed Fallout universe, with its ubiquitous Rad-X and Rad-Away).

Still, though, we're talking about a place based primarily on what Americans in the Fifties thought the future would be like, so obviously radiation works very differently there... And I'm pretty sure most of the survivors of the Great War either became ghouls or were in Vaults and bunkers and such... Yeah, I really don't know how the human PCs are going to be able to do anything out there, at least not for a few years (decades).

The roleplay will begin on October 20, 2077. How we operate after the Great War begins is a plot piece that will be revealed when we arrive there -- don't worry, it's been considered. I will repeat again though, live today with your characters. Do not project too much into the future, get into their minds amidst all the chaos this setting already involves rather than the dramas you expect to come.

We will begin the game on Monday, September 8th. Get ready! Applications will still be reviewed and, if they impress, accepted on a case by case basis.

Leos Klein: Max definitely seems like an interesting character already. I didn't expect a politician, let alone a foreign one, so it's a nice surprise from the start. I enjoy the balance between someone intelligent and charismatic with aspects of a narcissistic, jaded soul. The type who'd coldly pull the trigger, but could not possible lift a fist to defend themselves. It will be nice to see this person give the perspective of one who would never be on the front line, yet feels entitled enough to declare what is and is not a worthwhile sacrifice. I guess I am drawn to this one because he is a character that would be enjoyable to play and also entirely enjoyable to dislike. He's accepted.

Nyther: I truly have no idea why Wyoming is a wasteland. Is this meant to be in connection to the New Plague that spread throughout Colorado after 2055? There is not too much here about your character except for their being alone, and since the setting you described is rather confusing, I cannot accept this application. Feel free to make edits and alert me to re-review it though.

ZombieDude: Short, you need to finish this because the personality is already winning me over. I want to see the background to the character you've described here, but from the mentality alone, I know I want this here. Give me a solid background. Also, I'm surprised you're doing the middle ground approach with stats. Not a problem, just surprised. Acceptance Pending.

Uffizi: Sounds like a sinister sort with a glass jaw. With how much history this character has in the first 14 years of their life, it edges on unbelievable, but this is fiction at the end of the day and I wouldn't say it's exactly unheard of with that in mind. Be mindful of your character's weaknesses as they will be taken seriously -- especially true for somebody who gambles with more than just money but can't take much abuse. That said, Icarcai is accepted.

Maenguin: Are you sure it's Otto Sommer and not this guy?

In all seriousness, you take the low charisma seriously -- old school Fallout seriously, apparently. I don't mind it, of course, but I do hope he can talk to some degree. Anyway, your character is a simple brute with loose morals that top him from going 'too far', a definition that seems different for him than it may be to others. Not a bad character type at all and the background fits it. What gets me is that this guy seems completely unaffected by the world around him. That is to say, I'm not sure if the setting has effect on him given the background. Apparently he is doing just fine despite food and fuel shortages. This isn't a make or break, but I am raising my brow. Marv -- I mean Otto, is accepted.

Name: Primo “To & Fro” Corallo
Date of Birth: 03/05/2047
Height: 5'10
Weight: 178lb

Physical Description: Although certainly not the most important thing about him Primo is an undeniably handsome bloke. Even his old boxing couch expressed unease at putting him in the ring due to not wanting to ruin his “Hollywood looks”. Granted the old man was his father, but still. It's an extreme cliché among characters, I know, which is why I wanted to put it in here right away. So, yeah, his cliché better than average looks don't escape me.

Making the most out of his luck appearance wise Primo makes sure he is always very well kept. His hair is always very neat and it is a rarity to see him not clean shaven. He tends to always wear a crisp black suit, a white shirt, a black or blood red tie and black dress shoes. Once again, all looking crisp and more often than not new.

Years ago Primo was an avid boxer but it's been nearly half a decade since he trained routinely, much less religiously like he did once upon a time. Slowly he has been bringing on a more average build but his previous athletic lifestyle is still quite evident on his broad build in the form of still quite distinctive upper body muscles.

Occupation: Caporegime and Business Owner

Background:

Personality: Primo has standards and qualities but let's be honest, when it comes down to it he's the captain of a large grew of gangsters. One of the best, which means he's one of the worst. He certainly isn't a saint. Like mentioned before, he can be forgiving, kind and he's nearly always calm, but when he doesn't get what he wants... That's a whole other story. He is capable of intense levels of violence and not just with weapons. He's a solidly built bloke and has had years of training with his fists. He's quite capable physically and mentally of hurting people. He believes in the greater good and since he has no blood family any more in his mind that would be him. He'll do what he has to in order to protect himself. Values be damned. Except maybe Omerta. Primo believes deeply in the traditional code of silence, but the silence isn't primarily what he values it for. He believes in taking care of everything yourself. No police. No authorities. Handle your own affairs, or don't. Primo doesn't believe in relying completely on others for anything. He's a tad bit of a disciplinarian.

S: 6 - Despite not exercising anywhere near as often as he used to Primo still manages to maintain a portion of his previous physical strength.
P: 7 - His perception is the mixed result of the being thoroughly trained in boxing and the constant fear of rival crews trying to assassinate him. Fear tends to keep people on their toes.
E: 7 - Somewhat akin to strength but more of a life lesson. Primo learned at a young age that taking a beating is not the end of the world.
C: 6 - A key factor in the success of his work involves keeping the undisciplined disciplined. Takes more than a substitute teacher to do that.
I: 7 - In 'our thing', dumb equals dead. Primo was always a smart kid, being in the life just taught him to appreciate intelligence. Especially his own.
A: 4 - Being a captain means many things and one of them is that the vast majority of a time other people do your going and getting for you. A prolonged lack of use has slowed Primo down quite a bit. Ironic considering his nickname, I know.
L: 3 - His life. It's one unfortunate event after another. Though one could argue that everyone is about as lucky as thirteen pitch black cats for being alive at this point in history.

Weaknesses:

Imminent Lack of Power: Primo has been a Mafioso for more than a decade. With that title comes power, fear and eventually near complete control. It is uncertain how Primo will respond when all of his power - all of his dominance is taken away from him. “Absolute power corrupts absolutely but absolute powerlessness does the same.” Even if Primo does somehow get through his loss of power okay he'll still have some major personality issues to deal with. The very qualities that make him a great crime boss will turn right around on him as flaws in circumstances where not everyone is under his thumb. His cool and decisive thinking for example could make him a great leader, but among people who haven't lived the life he has it could also make the others see him as cold, calculating or even crazy. Not everyone's greater good is the same, and some don't even see the greater good as being that. That along with his demanding, domineering nature and his declined ability to consider other peoples perspectives as just possibly being the best one might mark him out in a bad way among other survivors he may find himself with.

Wired, I'll save my reviews tonight. In the meantime, why don't you update your characters to match the setting and time-line. Being born in 1947 and alive in 2077 seems like it'd wear on one's dashing good looks. Seems like more than a superficial change when I see that one of your boys burnt down a World War 2 vet's business, which seems all the less likely between 2020-2077. In general the style of character you're going for seems solid, granted I am put off that both are fairly middle ground in their skills -- not interested in any clear weaknesses huh?

Oh crap, I seriously messed up with the world war two thing, ha-ha, got a little too into the whole Mafia theme. Apologies. Messed up the century in my head, brain told me the nukes dropped in 1977. I like quite average characters, yeah, with the SPECIAL system no clear weaknesses also means no definite strengths after all.

Anyway, I'll fix the screw ups and see if I can't add a weakness section.

You have until Monday to post a CS. I will be reviewing a couple more late tonight and will offer critiques, so you have time to make edits if they're necessary. It would do you well to see what character types we already have accepted as you shape your own.
