Prologue

We have received reports that the a group of vampires still hold domain over the valley of Kainesberg. Said valley, and the city who lends it its name, are located very far into the North, away from major modern trade routes, so it is no wonder we haven't been aware of the vampire activity there. It has been decided that immediate activity has to be taken against the Damned inhabiting Kainesberg, lest other undead attempt to seek shelter there and their number swell.

You are one of the six Lancers chosen for this mission. You are to group up with your team members at the temple of the Church in the northern town of Elsen, where you will be provided with mounts, some basic supplies and money for expenses. From there you are to proceed to the village at the entrance of Kainesberg valley called Yorrick. After you arrive there the next course of action is left to be decided by you and your party.

May the light of the Fair Lady guide you

Father-General Giacomo Abrazzi

------------------------------------

The Sun was falling behind the high mountains in the west, casting large shadow over the entire valley. Jacob was quickly walking uphill, towards his house, constantly casting glances towards the dying light, praying to the Fair Lady to slow down its decent. Behind him was his son, Lars, a young boy, barely ten years of age. He was falling behind, his small stature barely able to push through the deep snow. He didn't complain, he only tried harder to keep up the pace with his father, but after a while he slipped and fell down, face-first. Fear came over him, he will be left behind. There was no time, father won't turn around for him, he won't risk it... Those were Lars' thoughts as he was slowly lifting his body out of snow.

What came into his sight when he moved his gaze forward was his father back. Jacob was crouching in front of him. "Come on boy," he said, "there's no time, I'll carry you. Come on." Impatience and a hint of fear could be felt in Jacob's voice. Lars gulped and tried to hold his tears as he moved himself onto his father's back, embracing his neck from behind. "Now, let's hurry back home fast before-" Jacob's words suddenly stopped and for a moment Lars couldn't hear anything. Then, a silent growl reached his ears and his breathing froze. He moved his head to be able to see what was in front of his father. There, between them and their home, stood a large, white wolf, its golden eyes shinning brightly in the darkness which enveloped the valley now that the Sun had completely fallen behind the mountain tops. At first it seemed like the wolf was alone, but when Lars focused his eyes he noticed more behind it, their white furs perfect camouflage in the surrounding snow.

"Lars." His father's trembling voice reached him. "Close your eyes and keep your head down until I say otherwise." Lars frantically began nodding his head. He had a feeling his father would notice it. Then he closed his eyes and buried his head into his father's back. He could feel his father slowly standing up straight, turning around and charging downhill, away from the wolves. As the howls and barks of the wolves behind them reached them, Lars could hear his father murmur "Fair Lady help us!"

------------------------------------

It was already getting dark when the village of Yorrick came into the view of the Lancers. It wasn't actually the whole village. Yorrick was a typical mountain settlement, with houses scattered around the whole mountain it was on, but this part of the village surrounded by a wooden palisade represented the core of it. Here you could find a village hall, tavern, church and a blacksmith. All incredibly modest, as it suited a place this far away North.

The Lancer party has been traversing the mountains surrounding the Kainesberg valley for three days now, sleeping in open or in caves. Finally, they'd be able to have some decent rest, and maybe some fresh food. Ale wouldn't be bad either. As they approached the palisade they noticed its gates were partially opening and a group of men coming out to greet them. At its forefront stood a large, muscular man who looked like he was in his fifties. He held a large axe in his hands and looked like he could put up a good fight, if it came down to it. The rest of the men held various improvised weaponry, but none of them managed to look threatening like the man with the axe did. He sized up the party and then addressed them with a loud voice:

"Who are you and what are you doing here?"

Before the party could answer, however, another voice reached them:

"Help me!"

A man was running down the hillside, carrying something on his back. His plea for help was followed by the sound of barking and growling.

"That's Jacob!" Someone from the group recognized the man. "And is that Lars on his back? We have to help them!"

"And those are lord Ulrik's wolves!" The man with the axe shouted back. "Don't be an idiot! Everyone get back behind the walls, we'll shut the gate. It's too late for Jacob and his son." It seemed it wasn't necessary to convince them, everyone was quickly scrambling through the gate, some didn't even wait for him to finish. He turned to the Lancer party. "I don't know who you are strangers, but you don't seem to be of the dead folk. Better get in as well otherwise you'll join unfortunate Jacob in the bellies of those beasts." Saying that he also moved towards the gate.

The ride had been an awfully long slog and Zoltan felt its effects on him, for three days he had not touched a bottle and for three days he felt himself growing angrier and angrier at his soberness and how he felt sluggish without the alcohol in his system, he even began developing a migraine, as he was not use to not having a headache from being perpetually under influence.

At the sight of the tavern inside, Zoltan's heart leapt. From the other side of the wooden gates he saw men hauling bottles of wine and ale into a service entrance, he felt a fire in his belly and a need to blow the jingly coins in his pouch on getting hammered. Hypnotically, he began clopping over to the gates, guided by some primal urge to get a drink. Then he stopped in his tracks as the men started shouting. Zoltan groaned in frustration and looked in the direction of the pointed finger. A man, with a bundled up child was hurdling down the hillside, with a large white dog on tow, he huffed, conveying no urgency.

"Oi, Forest Lady!" he said, turing to Cataline and snapping his fingers at her rudely, "This seems like your cup of tea." he eyed the bow and arrows on her back, 'she can make that shot.' he thought to himself, snapping out of it and adjusting his spear, 'And if she can't, she'll just whisper to the damn thing.' he chuckled to himself at the jab no one heard.

He looked back to the running father and terrified son, he felt a pang inches heart. He remembered being a boy of that age, afraid and fatherless. Zoltan snapped out of it.

"I'll wait at the foot of the hill, maybe if it comes down fast enough I can impale the bugger." He kicked the horses side and it whinnied, reluctantly trotting around and over to where it was being guided. Zoltan kept his eyes on the scene though. He could live with himself if they died. He wasn't payed to kill wolves, he was payed to kill vampires, this was just a bit extra for his conscience. He stopped at the foot of the hill landlocked up at the distant, panicked face of the father; he was very far away and Zoltan wasn't sure he'd get to the bottom before the wolf got to him. But he watched on regardless, he couldn't really go up, his stupid horse wouldn't travel very fast going uphill, especially when bogged down by snow.

"Quaint little place, isn't it?" the party could hear the gruff sarcastic tone coming from a middle aged warrior positioned close to the front of the pack. Many who had served the Lances knew this to be Jorn Segundis, a rather cynical warrior with a knack for speaking his mind, "The kind of place where women tell ghost stories to frighten the children into behaving, or where one's shadow can be seen as an agent of death- a heartless specter looking for it's next victim." He couldn't help but chuckle at his own remark as he lifted a hand, dusting the snow off his coat that concealed the well-worn armor beneath. Having been no stranger to the colder climates, one could see this warrior perpared- wearing a coat made of thick furs with gloves to match.

"Still... This where Father Gabrazzi sent us," the last remark not seeming to be directed towards anyone in particular... Rather it appeared as if the man was currently speaking to himself, "Let's hope it's just a hoax."

'Vampires? Here of all places?' This thought would remain silently within Jorn's mind as his smirk faded slightly, 'Fair Lady, I hope they're wrong.' Shaking his head to be free of his innate fears, Jorn began to fall back in place with the rest of the party as they steadily approached the city. What he wouldn't give for a stein of ale and a warm fire right about now...

As they arrived at the city gates, Jorn would begin to take stock of the cities defenses- or lack thereof. However the axe wielding mountain of a man before them had caught his interest, 'What's a warrior like that doing in thi-'

All at once, the thought was interrupted by the sounds of someone crying out for help. At the same instant, the group that had come out to greet them scurried back into the walls like mice- all except the man with the axe. With a shake of his head in disapproval, Jorn would begin to scan the snowy scenery for any signs of the pleading screams. Only after one of the party members had rushed off into the distance did he see what was truly going on... A man and a child running from something, though their assailants had not yet come into view. But one needn't guess to hard- what with all the snarling and growling accompanying the terrified shouts. Quickly, Jorn spurred his horse onward, reaching back into his coat as he drew a cross bow from beneath the furs, a bolt already knocked in place. After settling into range, Jorn pulled back on the reins as the beast beneath him came to a halt, a dissatisfied whiny resounding.

"I don't like it either," Jorn mentioned to his beast, acting as if it would understand, "But steady on." Aiming down the sights of his weapon, he'd wait for whatever beast approached to reveal themselves.

Though the journey itself had been quite lengthy and tiring, Cateline’s senses were gently shaken back to life as the group neared their first destination and a man in her party, she knew him to be called Jorn Segundis, began to speak about the tiny town. She nodded slightly at his summation in regards to the air surrounding the settlement and softly added, “When you put it that way, it reminds me of where I grew up.”

A minor throng of individuals made their way through the heavy doors, and stood outside the gateway. Silently viewing the faces of the unfamiliar inhabitants of the small community, Cateline listened to the noises of nature around her, as the largest man wielding an impressive axe addressed them. ‘Likely the leader of the group’ she internally surmised as she viewed him, though she did not jump with a pang of excitement at the opportunity to answer him. Quite the opposite, really.

Not more than a second later, it was made apparent that she had no need to. Upon hearing the sound of a hostile wolf, Cateline’s first instinct was to draw her bow and locate the source. Rearing her horse in the direction of the bark, Cateline again surveyed the scene as she nocked a red feathered arrow into place, drawing back the string. One of her companions, addressing her as ‘Forest Lady’ snapped at her. Her single, curt reply was, “Way ahead of you.”

Cateline spotted the two humanoid figures running down the hill: one quite small, one large. Humming briefly as she backtracked their path in the snow, she spotted a white furred canine predator in hot pursuit. Aiming briefly, and adjusting for any wind, Cateline let loose a single arrow in the direction of the beast when a clear line of site was available to her.

The Knight on horseback formed a strong contrast against the surroundings as the light withdrew and the shadows grew in it's absence. His polished plate and helm reflecting the white of the snow on the ground and rocks, the faded and once bright heraldry adorning his shield strapped to the saddle of the powerful Warhorse below him, and the Warhorses own barding contrasting with the gloomy and drab land they found themselves on. The sword held firmly in a scabbard at his hip, and the notches and minor dents across his armour told those that looked, that the Knight had seen combat and battle. Those that traveled with him, knew him as Angriff Kalstan.

The leather underside of plated gloves clutched the reins of the powerful steed. Angriff pulled on them lightly as the village of Yorrick loomed closer. Past the village lay the Valley, and their quest. But he felt weary after the days travel and the village of Yorrick sounded a fine a place to stay and rest, and gather supplies as any.
"Quaint little place, isn't it?" He heard a voice accompanied with sarcasm ahead of him. No doubt belonging to none other but Jorn, sometimes it seemed the man just talked to fill the already heavy air. Which wasn't entirely unwelcome on such a long and arduous journey as the one they had undertook. One hand absently patting the flank of the Warhorse that had carried him thus far. His gaze fell to the surroundings, taking in the snow covered lands. It seemed peaceful here, far away from wars and politics, if a little off the road. However, if rumors were to be true, the valley beyond was now the nest of vampires, and if left unchecked would cause chaos. Which was why they where here, to find the swine and end their pitiful life on this realm should they be present this far north.

During the journey, Angriff had become acquainted with most of the party he was travelling with, some returned the friendliness displayed by the knight and as expected some did not, their reasons being their own. After all, he had to know whom he could trust with his life, and theirs with him. He'd formed an especially strong bond with the priestess, Azalea Crowe whom he held in the highest regard and trusted more so than the rest. To be able speak the words of the most graceful Fair Lady was a feat indeed and gave the knight courage, knowing that the through Azalea the Fair Lady walked with them.

When they'd finally arrived at the gates of Yorrick, Angriff watched the large man and his group who'd come to meet them before the gates, one hand resting on the pommel of his own blade as he did so. However, his attention was quickly drawn by the man bearing his child running down the hill side, a call for "Help" ringing down towards them. Needing no other incentive, Angriff kicked the horses flank sending it into a run towards the hillside, his armour rattling and jingling the way only a heavily armored knight on horseback could as he joined Zoltan at the foot of the hill. He glanced at the man and his horse, before tugging on the reins sending his horse up the hillside, here the snow was deeper but the Warhorses powerful legs pushed through the snow making it's way up the hillside although at a much slower rate. One gauntlet outstretched as he made his way closer towards the man, whether or not they would meet each other in time, only fate could tell.
"Take my hand, quickly!" He shouted, intending to pull the man up onto his horse.

Azalea Crowe

The journey to Yorrick had earned Azalea a fonder appreciation for the downy beds within the dormitories back home. She had not been prepared for sleeping on rocks, their sharp edges poking into her back and sides no matter which way she lay, and she felt the inside of her legs being rubbed raw from riding horseback nearly the entire way. To be honest, she would have preferred never riding one of the beasts again... But, somehow, her palomino had endeared himself to her in just the three days they had been together. She had secretly named him Ramsey.

She had also gained a companion in Angriff, a sturdy knight in armor who shared her moral views. She had a feeling he would have her back, and her his. The others though... Her gaze swept around the rest of their companions. Zoltan was particularly troublesome and needed a firm admonishment, as well as a lesson in sobriety. She had no true problems with the others, yet. They seemed capable and stalwart.

As they approached the gates, their welcoming committee was... quaint, if not a touch rude. She raised an arched brow at the man with the axe. Before she could open her mouth to introduce their party, the screams fell upon her hears. She rounded her palomino around and squinted into the distance. What she heard the men of the village say, however, surprised her even more than the sight before her. She turned in her saddle to glare at their retreating backs. “You mean to tell me that strapping and capable men such as yourselves would let a child be mauled by those beasts?! By the Grace of the Fair Lady, I pray for your souls!” Azalea growled at them haughtily and raced her horse forward without any further delay. It came to a stop near to Angriff's, though she could feel the horse wanting to race from those wolves. “I will not let those savage hounds take you! Shield your eyes and keep coming towards us!” She pulled out her bloodstone, and held it in the air towards the wolves. She gave a prayer to the Fair Lady that this would slow those fiends down.

“Surrounded by darkness faith shines the brightest.”

She recited her Psalm calmly, her eyes focused on the wolves.

The arrow and the bolt sent by Cateline and Jorn respectively both hit the wolf leading the pursuit for Jacob. Blood sprayed the white fur and the snow underneath it and the beast stumbled, dived head first into the ground and began rolling down the hillside, colliding with Jacob. Perhaps due to fear at the sudden hit as much as the force of impact, Jacob also stumbled and fell.

"Run boy!" He shouted at Lars who was on his back. The boy showed little hesitation as he let go of his father, stood up and began running towards the Lancers while crying loudly. The wolves quickly overtake his father and couple of them jumped on him and started tearing him apart while the rest continued their pursuit for the young boy. Fortunately for Lars one of the hunters, a literal knight in shining armor, was galloping on his horse uphill and reached the boy before the beasts. Lars desperately grabbed the outstretched hand and Angriff lifted him onto the horse. For a moment, he was safe from the wolf's fangs.

Seeing the knight pick up the child, wolves changed their target to his horse. However, as they charged at its exposed legs the light from Azalea's Psalm blinded them. One of the wolves, upon reaching the front legs of Angriff's steed, awkwardly stumbled into its legs instead of attacking. The horse, noticing the beast, reared and then brought its hoofs down on the wolf's head and back, crushing it to death.

The rest of the wolves slowed down their charge or outright stopped it, and managed not to put themselves into disadvantageous position while blinded. They quickly regained their sight and five surrounded Angriff, while three positioned themselves between the knight and the rest of the hunters.

Bright red on white and a faint copper smell in the frigid air told Cateline she’d hit her mark. She heard the crunch of snow as the beast fell, and the ghastly snarls from the rest of the pack. There had to be at least a dozen in all. Each dog was huge to her, far larger than any of the predators she had seen before in the warm wilderness of her hometown.

They were easily outnumbered. Though canines were not capable of strategy, she knew them to be smart enough to be a problem. Perhaps, she wondered to herself, this has been an ill choice. The cry that arose from the child on the hill was quick to assuage these momentary doubts, sending a deep pang of sorrow through her gut as she witnessed the wild tumult that was the wolf’s descent. Unable to get a clear enough shot through the scuffle in her opinion, she hoped those nearer to the battle would have a better chance of stopping any immediate danger in the following seconds.

Cateline held her distance. Her horse was skittish enough to worry her, and she didn’t want to be thrown from her seat by the creature if it was suddenly frightened. The wolves scrambled from a large flash, seemingly disoriented for a moment, but not long, as they began to surround one of her companions.

Nocking another arrow into place, she drew back the string, ready to fire a second shot. Again she steadied her breathing, rocking with the slight nervous steps of her horse. She aimed for one of the wolves in front of the knight and child, hoping to strike it and give his horse an opening to run from the rest.

"Angriff, watch your flank!" Jorn shouted, attempting to raise his voice above the chaos. Between the man being shredded by wolves and his now enclosed ally, Jorn could see the events of this battle playing out poorly for the party, "Damnit." As he replaces the crossbow beneath his cloak, his hand would shoot the hilt of his blade, the metal chiming audibly as the sword was drawn from it's sheath.

Before he could prepare to make his charge, the priestess had worked her magic to disorient the beasts, "Perfect! Angriff, veer left!"

As his voice called out to his comrade, Jorn gritted his teeth to steel himself for what was to come. Forcefully, he'd jab his heels into his horse's side, spurring the beast forward as he made a charge towards the back of the beasts before him. Though the will of his mount was somewhat sketchy, Jorn would attempt to roll up behind the right most wolf (to Angriff's left), slashing into the beast with his blade- and trampling him with the horse if possible. He gave himself room for the horse to continue it's sprint, tugging on the reins to help veer the steed back towards the walls of the town after his strike. His goal was to open an avenue for which Angriff could escape- or at least have an attempt at running.

The knights gaze fell from wolf to wolf as they prowled around him, the slightest of movement it appeared would cause them to attack, to the boys father being savaged by wolves, it would be too late for the man. But the child in his arms could - would be saved of a similar fate. Whomever these wolves belonged to, this "lord" would pay the blood price. The light produced by the priestess had bought him some time to pull the child up onto the horse, and resulted in the death of a wolf under the horses hooves, but not enough time to escape.
"Look away child" Angriff spoke somberly to the child, his left arm wrapped around the boy keeping him firmly on the front of the saddle, in the cold embrace of metal. His right held firmly the hilt of a longsword. The longer he stayed in this standstill, the more the man screamed and the longer the wolves had to form around him. However, every second of time he bought would allow his party to escape or come to his aid.
Turning in his saddle, he took in the situation. Five of the wolves were circling him, three more prowled around the circle to prevent aid without a fight. These were hunters and intelligent ones at that. Two more were feasting upon the dying father, likely the alpha pair. He made eye contact with Azalea, he willed her to escape. However the child in his embrace removed that thought, if he fell today, so too would the child, and that would not be acceptable.

A sword swept in from the corner of his helmeted vision, striking at one of the wolves of the inner circle. Using this vital moment, Angriff kicked the horses flanks sending it charging towards Jorn and the wolf, seeing Jorn veer to the left after swiping at the beast, Angriff brought his own blade down, swinging at a second wolf near the first that Jorn had attacked of the inner circle, hoping to break free from the circle in his charge.
"Azalea, ride quickly!" He could hear and feel the wolves close in behind him as he charged in a similar direction of Jorn towards the villages walls.
"Jorn, you crazy bastard! I owe you a drink if we make it out of this!" He shouted over the din.

Azalea Crowe

Azalea gripped her bloodstone firmly in hand, her countenance grim as she acknowledged the demise of the man at the maws of wolves. She quickly turned her attention to the situation at hand. In the chaos, her horse had reared away from the oncoming wolves, bringing her next to Cateline, Jorn, and Zoltan. She watched as the archer deftly changed marks, aiming to lend cover for Angriff and the child.

In front of them, circling menacingly were three more wolves. She found herself suddenly very unprepared for dealing with the beasts. She could attempt to swing her mace at them, yet she thought better of it. They were lightning quick and she would more than likely lose an arm before hurting them in any significant way.

Then, suddenly, Jorn did something entirely unexpected and daring. “Utterly foolish!” Azalea growled. Yet she knew that he was doing as much as he could to save Angriff and the child. It was time for her to do the same. With a somber acquiesce, she retrieved her mace from it's loop on her belt and held it at the ready. After all, a missing arm wouldn't stop her from spreading the will of the Fair Lady. “I have your back, lady Cateline.” She would attempt to fend off any wolves who came at them while Cateline fired off her arrows, and afterwards hopefully begin their retreat to the village after the archer was finished.

Azalea heard Angriff tell her to run, yet she knew she couldn't leave the rest of their companions behind. “If it is as the Fair Lady wills.” She murmured beneath her breath. She glanced at Zoltan. “If just this once you could be useful, I could forgive all of your bad habits, drunkard. Just this once."

Seeing Cateline notching her arrow the three wolves standing between the encircled Angriff and the party charged at her. Zoltan, who was on the standby at the bottom of the hill since the start of the fight, killed one of them with a swift attack of his spear, while the other stopped their charged and backed off slightly, partially because of Zoltan's attack but also because Azalea moved in between them and the ranger.

With this opening Jorn's maneuver to move behind the wolf on Angriff's left was accomplished without much interference, but once he charged at the wolf in attempt to trample him the wolf and another one beside him turned in his direction. The horse under Jorn, frightened by their howls and barks, stopped and reared in panick, throwing Jorn out of the saddle. Fortunately for him the snow cushioned the fall so nothing was broken and no vitals were injured. Still, the pain assailed his body- he will have trouble moving for a while. The wolves also didn't miss this opportunity. Ironically, the one Jorn charged at now charged at him and bit into his sword-holding arm while the skirmisher was still lying prone on the ground, dazed from pain.

The second wolf also attempted to approach fallen Jorn, but as Angriff made his way to help his comrade his steed hit the wolf and pushed him to the side. Then, once the knight approached Jorn and the wolf, he slashed his sword and killed the beast while charging, freeing the skirmisher's sword-arm. The other three wolves who were encircling Angriff followed him to Jorn, but the one who was closest to the lying skirmisher and the knight had his head pierced by Cateline's arrow, giving a few extra second to Jorn to get up. The two wolves feasting on Jacob now seemed to have finished their meal and began moving towards Jorn and Angriff as well.

Cateline nodded deftly to the bold words of Azalea, trusting her as a woman of her word, simply to let her know she had been heard. She saw the wolves rumble in violent shocks of white, circling closer to Jorn and Angriff, and saw the former be thrown from his seat. Heard the awful sound of a sharp wolf-bite hitting its mark, fangs into supple flesh, and the rumbling growls of the wolves behind it. Her senses were fully alive, the smell of blood further mixing into the soft sent of the icey woodlands. None of it shook her aim as her fired arrow struck one of the vicious creatures charging at the two with the innocent child, after the knight slashed the most immediate threat, deterring the creature.

She mutters, “Such horrid beasts do not know when to give up,” then glances behind herself, gauging the distance between the other wolves and where her horse temporarily resides. “Should you need my help,” she says firmly to Azalea, “Shout.” She had just enough time to see Zoltan extinguish one of the charging wolves’ lives, before turning back. They had better chances, now, but the rest of their party was in trouble.

Cateline had made the choice of her next target, nocking a third arrow into place and aiming at a second white wolf nearer to Jorn and Angriff, as they were sorely outnumbered. The downed man would need all the help he could get, with no horse and little time to react. She pulled the string taut, fingers placed delicately above and below the nock of the arrow, with her other hand firmly clasping the grip out in from of her. With a twang, she fired her next shot, fletching hissing through the air.

She whistled sharply to her hawk, giving it a brief command with the flick of her hand to strike at the wounded wolf when given a chance, or to at least distract it and push it away from the rest of the pack. The fowl was smart enough to know that it should err on the side of caution, as it was much smaller than the canine predators, and could easily be torn apart. It held a fair distance as long as the wolves stayed clumped tightly together, waiting for an opening to strike.

Zoltan held his spear in a tight grip as the skirmisher tried to ride his horse though the sea of gnashing fangs and furry death. Without warning, a wolf from the pack that thronged Jorn stood still and looked down the hill at Zoltan, for but a moment their eyes met before the wolf barred it's yellowed, dripping fangs and charged down the hill. He stood unwavering as the beast romped down the hill towards him, it was fairly high up, giving Zoltan time to plan and predict how to fight it.

Soon it was upon him, the wolf, bounding closer and closing the yards between him and it; Zoltan made the first move. As it leaped at him, he swatted it away, swinging his spear side long and smacking it with it's shaft. The wolf reeled back, it's mistake, and Zoltan thrust forward; the blade cut past the side of the beast's muzzle and severed the muscles holding it's jaws, making it's lower jaw hang loose. Once unable to bite, he took the risk to advance and once more thrust forward, this time catching the creature in it's eye while it was recoiling from the previous attack. The head of the spear was completely sunk within the skull of the wolf and it's face flickered with emotions and expressions as the blade destroyed it's brain; finally it settled on one, anger.

It lunged forward in a vain attempt to kill the man who skewered it's head, Zoltan met this by simply pushing forward firmly and twisting the blade. The wolf jolted to a stop and let out a high pitch whimper as it's knees buckled beneath it; it dropped into the snow, dead leaving Zoltan panting. Time on the road hadn't dulled him, the beast was dead in seconds.

He looked down at the dead body of the animal and sighed, he'd have to skin it later. Zoltan started to ascend the hill, though keeping his distance from the main pack and instead keeping his eyes on the two in font of him, Azalea and Cateline.

As the beast clamped down on the warriors arm, Jorn couldn't help but yell in anguish. Though it wasn't the first time he had sustained such a wound, the savage tearing and shaking of the beast's jaw was more then enough to overwhelm his senses. Slamming his fist in vain against the muzzle of the wolf, Jorn suddenly felt like this was going to be the end of him. It was then that the familiar sound of metal on flesh rang out; the beast that once assailed him falling limp to the side of his form in the snow. It was then that Jorn caught a glimpse of the mounted knight and his charge, struggling to get onto his feet as his blood dripped from his finger tips and onto the snow below- staining the fresh powder kicked up from the man's steed. Though the chill of the snow had chilled the rest of his body, Jorn quickly realized the feeling in his left hand had all but escaped him...

Despite his ally's best attempt, the feeling of dread would not escape the wounded man, gripping his sword tightly in his off hand as his gaze turned back to the approaching wolves. "Angriff!" Jorn's voice echoing out over the frozen landscape, doing what he could to keep his figure loose and prepared for the oncoming assault, "Get inside!" If this was to be it for the man, so be it... He would not have a child- nor a brother in arms die over an already handicapped warrior. Slowy edging back in the snow, Jorn fought the urge to run, tightening the grip on his blade, "Come on... The Fair Lady is ready to see us home," locking eyes on the encroaching beasts. If one should approach, Jorn would attempt to kick snow in their face and step back, all the while taking duelist thrusts to keep them at bay/pierce their skulls.

Raising his sword, now stained with red blood along it's blade against the snowy and white backdrop, blood now stained the white, once peaceful snow, a bloody beginning to what was certain to be a bloody journey and undertaking. A wolf had been slain by his hand, the beast had been slammed in it's side by Angriff's Warhorse and promptly dispatched from this realm by way of the sword embedding in it's side. However much the action helped his now dear friend Jorn. He owed the man for his assault, Angriff owed him and he knew he certainly wouldn't leave him to die here in the cold north, a forgotten death to all but this group. The child remained steadfast in his arms, his life would be forfeit if Angriff left to help fight the Wolves encroaching on Jorn, but he couldn't leave the man to whom he owed his life. No, he would run but with both of them or none.
Directing the horse behind Jorn, hoping the man would be able to keep the wolves at bay as he did so, Angriff sheathed his blade and outstretched his hand towards Jorn's back as he called out.
"You won't die here! Now take my damn hand, and get up here!" Angriff shouted, should Jorn take his hand, he'd pull him up behind him onto the horse. Certain his Warhorse would be able to hold the two warrior's weight, and ride as quickly away should the fates allow.

Hearing a familiar voice call out behind him, Jorn glanced over his shoulder to see the knight that he had just freed turning to approach on Jorn's flank. Growling under his breath in agitation, Jorn continued to keep his eyes locked with the wolves as he waited, "You damned idiot..." Jorn whispered under his breath. As the skirmisher slowed his breathing down, he'd focus on the subtle sounds of the hooves of Angriff's beast crushing the snow beneath it.

'1...2..-!" Just as Angriff pulled up behind him, Jorn sheated his blade and rounded, taking Angriff's hand as he hoisted himself up onto the back portion of the horse's saddle; all while attempting to position himself so the knight had to slow down as little as possible on the pickup.

Azalea Crowe

Azalea bit her lip as she surveyed the situation. It was hard to think of a decent way out of this other than running, but those wolves could easily take down their horses and they'd be worse off yet, fumbling in the snow helplessly like fawns – no, even worse off than fawns. However, Zoltan had risen to the occasion, which made her appreciate the drunkard more. Maybe there is a hero in that fool. She thought, bemused.

Watching the events unfold with Jorn and Angriff made her insides wrench in abject horror. She tried shaking it off – yet every single lesson of her youth urged her to go mend Jorn's wounds – but realized she would need to take a thorough look at his arm if they made it out of this alive, and not before. However, if their trio didn't hurry in Angriff and Jorn's path, they would soon be left to deal with six wolves, all alone.

Azalea felt the weight of her mace in her hand, and gazed at the pair of wolves in front of her. “Bloody hells, I'm no warrior!” She growled but knew what she must do. She hurriedly tied a bandage around her hand and the hilt of her mace, to insure that it wouldn't be easily dislodged from her grip. She then rapped her heels against Ramsey's sides, spurring him forward into a half-gallop, and attempted to bring down her mace on one of wolves' heads, hoping to lessen the pressure on Cateline.
