Is anyone actually worried about this? I'm really not, I basically wrote an entire paragraph as to why I don't think Ebola will cause anything in the United States right now.

Putting on my tinfoil hat for a moment here, smells like a bit of a distraction to me. But hey, this seems to be the most political/historically-versed side of the Guild, so I'd love to hear some of your thoughts.

I don't live in America, but I personally don't think it is an apocalyptic-walking-dead scenario, AKA worst-case scenario. The reason why Ebola spread in Africa so quickly was because of poor sanitation and cleanliness in medical institutions. Compared to American hospitals and technology, the United States probably will neutralize the threat faster or at least put up a decent quarantine. Remember HIV in the '80s? Not much research was conducted at that time, so people knew very little about it. Thus, they tended to assume worst-case scenario. They basically acted like what Americans are doing now with Ebola.

Ebola is absolutely going to destroy America, just like Bird Flu, Swine Flu, regular flu, SARS, West Nile, and Anthrax.

Actually, Ebola is transmitted by blood-to-blood contact. Like HIV, it is a grave and not-really-that-contagious disease. Unless you were planning on stealing actual blood from an Ebola patient and injecting it into certain areas of your body, you have literally nothing to worry about. It's spreading in the 3rd world because their sanitation and health practices suck ass beyond all human reckoning. Ebola will do precisely nothing to Americans in America.

You forgot the Lassa fear from 2010.

No, but you're absolutely right. People keep trying to say that "they don't believe" it is not airborne, but there is zero scientific proof to back those claims. It's incredible what people can turn into politics these days ("I don't trust anything the administrators say!"). Fact of the matter is, Ebola's hard to spread, countries like the ones it hit in Africa are not very sanitized and spend little on Healthcare as it is.

But y'know, it'll cause Americans the fear and "OMG, WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!" thought-processes.

I hope it won't go airborne, but you guys have to remember that it is a possibility.

Just remember that everyone was snarking about how it can't get to the US, and now it is here.

At the another border, we have illegals being shipped to all corners of the country.

I think that, in all honesty, it isn't much of a chance it could spread, butyoy have to be aware that it is a possibility. Don't be willfully ignorant about it - Be aware of what can happen.

It's not that we're ignorant, Dipper, it's that the possibility is exceeding low. It has never evolved into airborne before, but it's certainly possible to do so now. Since Ebola is considered a level four "hot zone" virus, we have absolutely no idea as to how it works. Scientists have been poking at it for plenty of years and not much is still known about it, so it could certainly evolve, but again, we really have no way to determine how it will be evolve.

My overall point is that this won't become like the movie "Outbreak" (which, is great, by the way, you should all go and watch it if you get the chance), which is the misconception that is being tossed from article to article.

Also, there's no reason to be rude when debating. It makes people less inclined to consider your debate points, the second you insult someone ("willfully ignorant") is when people stop listening to you. Okay, sorry, just had to say something because that made me twitch -- nonetheless, it makes none of your points less valid.

I actually wasn't calling you guys willfully ignorant - I'm talking about every single person who says "THIS ISN,T AN ISSUE, ITS FINE, NO NEED TO DEPORT/QUARENTINE ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS FROM THE HOTZONE IN LIBERIA.

I've seen outbreak, actually, Damn good movie.

Again, as for the will fully ignorant people, I'm talking about the experts who say "Its 100℅ stable, we've only known about it for 30 years out of its long history of existence, it wont get to the US, no need to be worried, if you are worried, you are a ignorant frear mongering rube"

You guys are respectfully debating about it.

Oh, my apologies. I thought you were referring to us. Yeah, no, those people need to "shush-y". Then again, this is some of their jobs -- to cool down any large scale hysteria. Which makes sense, I suppose, but there's always the possibility. It sucks that the people with common sense are treated as the "tinfoil hat conspirators" for thinking otherwise about how it can evolve, though.

Or its a dangerous disease, ala Spanish Influenza, that kills people painfully. xP

Agreed. Honestly, Experts are... Seen as the be all end all, and they refuse to admit they may be wrong. Everyone is ignorant but them. Willfully ignorant, because by George, I'm an expert.

Or you know, the reason we've never had a serious outbreak is because of our first world infrastructure and constant overreaction to threats. Kind of like how if a tornado warning is issued, and you hide in the basement, and there's no tornado, that's no reason to stop listening to tornado warnings.

EDIT

Really doe there's not liable to be a serious outbreak here because it spreads by blood/fluid and our infrastructure for dealing with that is pretty hardcore top tier.

We don't need to panic about it, Brovo, but shoving your head in the sand and saying it cant happen, there can't be a mutation, there is no chance it could evenhappen is silly.

I highly doubt it will happen, but we need to be aware that diseases DO mutate.

If it was going to mutate here, it would need more than one or two hosts under heavy quarantine to do so. As it stands, even if the virus jumped airborne *right now*, nothing would happen. Really, it's..... we're fuckin' fine.

Last time Ebola was even in the United States, it mutated into the Reston strain. Which. . was totally harmless to humans. Only makes you wonder if it'll mutate the same way again.

And what if it mutates into the next black death or some shit? It's a fairly unlikely scenario, but viruses are pretty unpredictable.

For now though, the only thing I'm concerned about is that I live near Dallas. Still, it's an isolated case and I don't doubt the CDC has their shit together, so odds are this shit will blow over in a week or two and everything will be back to normal. The only way I can see it spreading is if it does mutate and become more deadly/contagious in some way.

Funny you bring up the Black Death, I was just reading an article yesterday and some seem to have come to a theory that Ebola is behind the Black Death. And you're near Dallas? Must be a lot of comments in regards to it spreading there, huh? Well, I don't think it will mutate, but if it does, stay safe and take care, y0.

I feel the same, mdk, but i-m fully aware it could, possibly, mutate, no mater how unlikely. Denying it as a possibly is foolish. It mutated last time, it might mutate again.

I've got close friends in Dallas, who have, ever since the recent influx of MS13 gang members into Texas, have suddenly gone radio silence. I'm constantly worried about them.
