A Crown of Bones

GM: Brand
co-GM: Headphones

In the beginning there was only the True Source: the one god, omnipotent and everlasting. Searching for purpose the One God looked into the void and decided existence should be shared, the purpose for one should be in another. So the One God split himself in two and the brother gods Euros and Meros were born. In this something new was created: Perspective, for the brothers could no longer see everything in its entirety but rather they saw the void from their own views. They agreed the void should give way to a new realm, a kingdom for themselves.

Meros wanted a kingdom of spirit. Everlasting and unrestricted it would be everywhere yet nowhere, a world of pure conscious. Euros however wanted something different, something new. A world of sight touch and sound, new sensations which were as revolutionary as the gods' births. Euros created the physical world, the stars the moons and the sun. The brothers agreed that to regain their omnipotence they would have to see existence through many eyes at once, and so they began to fill their kingdoms with other creations in thier image, sentient creations.

Meros thought things should exist in absolutes, and believed there was only two truths to the unvierse: Things could be created and things could be destroyed. Meros filled his realm with creations to embody this philosophy, Angels who would strive to keep the universe at an equilibrium and demons who strived to set it off balance, good and evil. In this way Meros could see the universe from both perspectives through his creations, and he believed all was done.

Euros saw his brother's creations, but desired something different. He believed things should be ever changing, and while demons and angels were bound to good or evil, he thought his creations should be able to choose between the two so that they wouldn't be a slave to one or the other; Euros created free will then made man and gave him a home in his realm and saw that he thrived.

When Meros saw his brothers creation he could not comprehend what his brother had created, but instead saw man as a threat to both kingdoms, his and his brother's. So Meros struck out against man and took thier immortality so that they may die out and fade away. When Euros saw what his brother had done to his creations and saw the plight of man he created woman, so that though they may multiply, and although they may die their kind would never fade away. Then when his brother once again threatened to do the same, Euros sought to protect man against his brother, and the god sacrificed his own divinity to separate the physical world from the spirtual and he fell to Earth as a mortal.

When Meros saw his brothers sacrifice he recognized the wrong he had done, but wept when his brother was a realm away and untouchable. Rather then watch his brother die and fade to dust as the men he had cursed, Meros threw away his own divinity to create a bridge between the realms, and he gave every man a soul, a spiritual counterpart, so that when the physical body dies it would live forever in the spirit. In this way he would never truly lose his brother.

__________Intro__________

The god reborn the Northmen call him: Malfear, the twisted creation of the Mages Tower. He was once a man , but now he couldn't be further from human. A sorcerer so powerful he held dominion over life and death itself, a Necromancer and the first of his kind. He was found as a boy by Mages of the Tower, and when they discovered this young child's aptitude for magic they took him in as their own. He would grow to be the most powerful among them, possessing a nearly inhuman control of magic they had never dreamt possible. He was the shining gem of the Tower and they promised the world that through this young man things would change like we never dreamt possible, and how right they were. Demonic influence, a twisted mind and betrayal, people can only speculate why the prized horse of the Tower turned on those who raised him but he did. When his brothers discovered he had been dabbling in the Dark Magics he slayed a number of the magi and escaped into hiding. The Tower pursued his trail relentlessly to the border of the civilized world, but there they ended the chase, and there laid their single greatest mistake. For in the North Malfear displayed to the barbaric peoples his control over life and death, and when they saw he could bring back the dead they worshiped him as god. When thier god asked them to unite and set the civilized world aflame, the barbarians were too happy to oblige after years of suffering militant conquest. Malfear returned to his homeland with an army at his side, and tore the Mages Tower down in the name of revenge. When armies from the Five Nations mustered to deal with this threat, a ten year war began, the savagery of which is forever engrained in the memories of those old enough to remember the days Malfear and his Barbaric army terrorized the world. Finally the armies of Malfear were defeated and the Necromancer was slain in battle. That was twelve years ago, and as the world still struggles to recover from this history there are whispers that Malfear has been reborn in the North. The world is too preoccupied to concern themselves with such unfounded rumors, for Malfear was killed in battle, but there are few who concern themselves with these rumors...

But if the rumors are true, and Malfear once more walks among us, the five kingdoms must band together to face this threat or we will all face our doom.

__________Rules and Expectations___________

All the standard RP rules apply. I don't have a minimum post length, so don't feel the need to add fluff if you're suffering a writer's block, but if I notice all your posts are consistently short you will be addressed about it. Don't auto-hit, especially against players. If you happen to get into a fight with another player in IC, the two of you can resolve it amongst yourselves or I can decide the victor. Also, please no god-modding. Even if your a pretty powerful Mage or Guardian, if you try to go up against multiple enemies at once, on your own, expect some pretty negative consequences. Basically if I see you're throwing caution to the wind I won't hesitate to kill you off.

As to posting frequency, i'll probably be doing a GM post every two weeks, maybe sooner if all players in a certain group get a post in. I expect you to match me post by post, so I expect a post every two weeks at the minimum. If you wish to do a collab with another player, or just a general character development post, you're free to post more frequently so long as you don't flood the IC. If you miss a posting period, don't worry about it, i'll be fairly lenient towards that. If, however, I notice a player consistently misses a post they will be addressed.

Name: Mia Feral

House Name: N/A

Age: 23

Appearance:
(ignore the writing on the image, I was looking up pictures and once I saw this I knew it was what I wanted for my character)

Homeland: Kain (though she doesn't associate herself with it that much. It shall be explained in the bio)

Race: Mage

Bio: Mia is simply a traveler. She works as a roaming mercenary, taking on jobs of any kind, from simple farm work, to protecting those that wish to pay for personal protection. Originally born to one of the nomadic tribes that wander within the Great Expanse. Belonging to a tribe here, she was taught many different skills from a young age, ranging from hunting and combat, to farming and gathering resources. However, her greatest trait is her inherent magical abilities. Mia was a mage that, while not supremely powerful as some mages could be, was a very unique and specialized mage. She had the subset ability of geomancy that would allow her to manipulate steel.
For a desert tribe, being able to manipulate steel wasn't that great, but when having to fight armed assailants, being able to shape her blade into a shield, or even ranged weaponry was a very good skill. On top of that, once an opponent was disarmed, she could "consume" their weapons to create an even larger mass of steel to manipulate. It was quite useful in terms of combat purposes.

So, for 16 years, she lived with her tribe and went on various travels, but one day disaster struck. The entire tribe, save for Mia and her younger brother, Sorin, were attacked and killed by a group of thieves. The tribe was outmatched, for the enemies had multiple mages among them, and they bombarded spells onto the group. Mia and Sorin, along with several others, were out gathering water and hunting whatever they could, and returned to their camp to find it destroyed. The desert winds had wiped away any trace of the attackers tracks and any way to catch them, but the remaining members vowed vengeance.

Mia, however, knew that in a straight up engagement, the remaining members, save for herself thanks to her magic, would be killed if they could even find the group. So, she and her brother attempted to calm them down and think up a rational solution, but their emotions got the better of them, and they went off, in search for vengeance and let their fury kill them. Mia and Sorin, they gathered what they could, and began to travel the same way the remaining tribe members went, and no sooner than a few days later had they found the corpses of their brethren, dead due to dehydration.

Sorin was upset, as was Mia, but she didn't let her emotions consume her as Sorin did. He gathered his things and explained to Mia his plan. He was going to travel to one of the coastal cities of Kain, and try to find any of their tribe's wares, and from their find the group of murderers responsible for wiping out their clan. He gave his sister a choice, follow him to the city, or to leave him and go about on her own.

While she didn't want to let her tribe fade into nothing, there was no point in trying to find the thieves. They had already wiped out their tribe, and if Sorin were to chase them, he would more than likely end up the same way as everyone else had. She shed a few tears and left him on his own.
It was around the time of her 17th birthday that would be the day her life would change forever. Until this point, she was a single traveler, sticking to the rivers of the desert to gather plants and hunt small critters to survive. It wasn't the ideal life, but it was better than dying or going on the foolish quest her brother had went on. She wasn't sure of what else to do, so she just continued with what she had been taught, live off the land and don't antagonize it.

She believed this whole-heartedly, as long as she only took what she needed, then fate wouldn't hurt her, until one day. As she was setting up camp one night, she noticed a group of people approaching. They were hard to make out, but she focused her eyes heavily onto them until she noticed a light. One of them seemed to be holding a torch, but as they got closer, she realized it was a feral mage pyromancer, preparing a fireball to launch at her. Before she could react, the sphere of flame came flying at her and created a large explosion that knocked her camp set away, and sent her and her camel flying back. She lost consciousness for a second, only to find as she awoke the group standing over her, laughing as they looked through her things and even attempted to strip her. She was pinned to the ground, her left pinned under her now dead mount, and she knew she needed to act fast, or she would end up as her tribe did.

It was that very moment, the memory of her tribe's camp they found decimated, that set her off. She let out a ferocious scream that set the thieves back for a second, but then they began to move towards her again, but she was prepared. Still, even in her blood-lust induced state, she still couldn't move her left arm, and this being a do or die scenario, and her mind pushed into the back seat of her brain and instincts at the wheel, she used her magic to send her blade flying into her free arm, and cleanly sliced the pinned, damage limb from herself, setting her free. The attackers looked on in a mixture of fear and shock, and taking advantage of this, she sent her blade flying straight into the first thief's throat, and then using more of her magical abilities, took his blades off his person and systematically eliminated each one. However, the last one, the pyromancer, she had a special treat in store. Her subconscious created a shape for the steel that also worked to stop her left "nub" from bleeding out. It dug into her skin, blocking the blood flow from the wound, and formed an arm made from the steel of all the blades she had under her control. Before the mage had a moment to react, she slung her knew arm out towards him, and it shifted into a scythe shaped, the blade wrapping around the attacker's neck, and taking his head clean off as she pulled her new arm back.
She changed completely from that moment on. She had lost everything from her family to even part of her own body, and decided at that moment that she had nothing left to give. So, with nothing left to give, she figured she needed to find something new to take for her own. She left Kain as soon as she could, opting to follow the ways of a nomad across all five kingdoms now, selling her skills to anyone that would pay for them. And that is where we find Mia now, travelling the kingdoms to find something she can truly claim as "her's."

Spells: Geomancy, metal specialization. Mia has the ability to manipulate steel too a certain extent. By this I mean that she can manipulate metal objects that aren't "attached" or in active use. Got a sword just lying on the ground, she can make it float and throw it at anyone. If someone is holding that sword she can try to force the sword from their grip and stab them with it, or if they're wearing a metal helmet she could, for example, crush their skull instantly. She can also manipulate it's shape, allowing her to shape a sword into different weapons, or even break it into shards to send hurling at enemies, or her signature "metal arm" power. She isn't constantly using her abilities, so most people believe she is disabled terribly until they see her true power.

The main limit is that she can only focus on one mass of steel at a time. If she's focused on maintaining her steel limb, she can't steal other weapons. If she's trying to steal someone's weapon, her arm will fall apart into a mass of steel objects. So yeah, she can't be rocket punching you while making someone else's weapon stab themselves. One thing at a time.

Alright, here's my CS. had it ready for whenever the OOC went up. As you can tell, I'm not that hyped or anything for this RP. (please, get the sarcasm) LoL

Name: Emil Errant

House Name: House Errant - Destroyed by the Order of the Rose

Age: 18

(Ignore the pointed ears)

Homeland: Kain/Valeal

Race: Mage

Spells:
School of Blessing - Protective Specialization

Emil by nature has a comfortable grasp over magics defensive or supportive in purpose. The School of Blessings serves as Emil's strongest suit, and he most commonly uses his abilities to create magical shields to protect himself and his companions. He specializes in the creation and use of barriers and shields, forgoing the ability to augment the human body's abilities, such as being able to breathe underwater or seeing at night, in exchange for a greater mastery over barrier techniques.

School of Healing

Synergizing with his defensive nature, as well as his natural talent with the schools under the Restos Branch, the ability to heal wounds is useful in almost any situation. Through his few years of experience, Emil can heal easily light wounds, as well as moderate wounds with some degree of difficulty and concentration, but cannot as of yet heal more serious or grievous wounds.

Bio:

A soft spoken and gentle youth from Valeal, his appearance and manner of dress marks him as a person from Kainite origins. Emil was born to Rickard Errant, a prominent Tower Mage from Valeal, and Renee Faris, an aristocratic woman from Kain, who had moved to the city of Oslo to stay with her husband. As the child to a prominent mage, it was no surprise to find that Emil had the potential for magic, and the child was inducted into the order of the Mages Tower. As a Mages Tower initiate, Emil quickly began learning how to control magic from a young age. Emil showed considerable promise as a young mage, eager to learn, and almost hungry for knowledge, easily picking up feats others his age would consider challenging.

Emil, like many young initiates, were taught the basics of magic, learned in reading, writing and mathematics, and were educated to the standard of Valeal nobles their age. Unlike Valeal children, the young mages were also introduced to the intricacies of swordplay, in order to find suitable candidates for the next class of Guardians. While Emil was eager and enthusiastic, and showed promise with the sword, the Archmages found that he lacked the aggression and confidence suitable for, and expected of a Guardian. Instead, Emil continued to learn how to harness his magical abilities, achieving the rank of Adept in the School of Blessing at the young age of 16, and had from there moved onto the school of Healing.

The Order of the Rose however, had different plans for the Errant family. During the summer after Emil's 17th birthday, the Errant family traveled the Valeal countryside to relax and spend time together as they did every summer. During this seemingly normal summer, the Errant family were beset upon by a band of men identifying themselves as members of the Order of the Rose. What began as a disagreement soon escalated into a heated debate, and from there outright violence. During the conflict, Emil and his father slew several Order soldiers before they were finally subdued, and Emil, his mother, and father, were all tied to stakes to be burnt.

As the Order began to put the family to the torch, Rickard Errant, a master of Airmancy, used his magic to send Emil and his stake flying into the nearby river, where he quickly disappeared from and escaped the Order. After extracting himself from the river and stake, Emil found himself on the outskirts of Valeal territory, in the contested Valeal/Valaria territories, alone, penniless, and likely orphaned. Wary of the Order of the Rose, and no longer trusting the Mages Tower, with their public nature to keep him safe, Emil wandered the Valeal/Valaria countryside with little sense of direction, staying at towns doing various small labor, and avoiding Order supporters as they roamed about, looking for other mages.

Emil eventually happened upon Mia Feral, a mage from Kain. As the first living mage Emil had seen since he left Oslo, Emil immediately gravitated towards the gemoancer. Though he should have been wary of her, due to her likely status as a 'Feral mage', Emil found himself following the Mercenary-Mage, who reluctantly accepted him as a pupil. Now under the wing of Mia Feral, mercenary, geomancer, and feral mage, Emil has begun to learn the secrets of geomancy, and has adopted the rough and tumble lifestyle of a mercenary.

Eh, reading Sekai's character, she likely wouldn't have any companions, unless she was okay with having a 'protege' character following her around

Actually I think that would be good for Mia. Having a companion travelling with her would make sense cause first, she'd be lonely after awhile and while not openly admitting it, would appreciate some company Second, she is searching for something to claim as "her's" so having someone she could teach her skills too and pass on a lineage of sorts would be good for that whole thing, a legacy of her own.

Hey there Brand, just passing through. Sorry for the intrusion, I've noticed your rp and so far it looks grand. One thing I believe I've not noticed yet, and it might be good for both yourself and your players to know early on to avoid any possible confusion later on, is what you hope the rp's posting frequency might be. So far I've seen a few players here who I recognise with some preferring quicker posting, and some preferring a more relaxed pace, and I think it'd be helpful for everyone to be on the same wavelength with regards to that. My apologies if this has already been clarified.

I wish you and everyone else participating the best of luck!

@Vietmyke, remove the school of Geomancy from the spells section of your CS for now. It's fine that your character is learning it, and in time your character will be able to use earth magic with some competency, but for now you're only allowed two schools and I want to avoid confusion for other people making thier cs'. You can leave the bit in about your character learning Geomancy in your bio, and you can have your character 'practice' geomancy in the IC, but remove it from the spells section until your character has a firm understanding of it.

Name: Genshal Hyres

House: None

Age: 21

Appearance:

Genshal stands 6ft2, light skinned and well built. War has put a sheen on his muscles, but taken the youthful sheen from the rest of him. His face is scared, his smile slightly crooked, but as the rank and file go, he is not unpleasant to look at. His black hair he wears long, hanging matted like a lion's mane. A small fragment of wood hangs from a thong around his neck.

He garbs himself in hard leathers on the plains, and think furs in the mountains. A notched bastard sword hangs across his back, a short blade at his waste and a dagger is strapped to his thigh. A small pack over one shoulder carries everything of value he owns – spare clothed, spare boots, a whetstone, a roll of coins and a few chewing herbs. Genshal travels light.

Homeland: Valial

Race: Just plain human.

Magic: The ability to turn money into less money.

Background:

Six years old when the soldiers came. Ours or theirs, it hardly mattered when a war had turned that ugly. When the clang of plate echoed through the trees they sent the boys away from the village – news swiftly followed that there was no longer a village to return to. It's what happens in war – the ballad writers just leave it out for some reason.

When you're six and everyone else is carrion, you don't have a whole lot of options. Begging works for a time, but by age seven the streets will have knocked the cute off you, and it's time to look for a career. I wasn't quick enough to be a thief and wasn't pretty enough to be a whore – that left sellsword. Not a lot a business for a pre-pubescent runt with a knife, but one with no morals and a willingness to be paid in table scraps found more than you might expect. I spent more time shovelling horse shit than dancing with a blade, but it builds the muscles either way.

Before my tenth birthday I'd visited Gorgon and Ferros, and I'd killed more men than I'd lost milk teeth. There were no good wars, but sometimes a person needs to disappear. The first one hits you really hard – you piss yourself just before, and hurl over the corpse before it gets cold – then you cry for weeks. But the second killing, well, it's only half as bad. You still feel it, but it's softer, it's over quicker. Every drop of blood you spill teaches you the lesson that it's a nasty fucked up world – and that people die all the time. Once you've learned the truth you either break down in despair, or you do what is necessary to survive. I'm a survivor.

If there's a job for a hired blade, I've probably done it. Body guarding, caravanning, territory control, policing and generalised problem solving – war pays the best though. Valaria (Or Valial depending on who's paying) has been the place to be for soldiering these past few years – foolish men with broken backs paying other men to kill one another to no purpose. I've marched under more banners than I'd care to count – but by that time I'd been on the road long enough that I no longer wished to give it up. War is fine when your coin-purse is running dry, but once your pockets jingle it's time to skip the sentries and return to the trappings of civilization. If you can fight for a good cause it makes life simpler, the blood washes out more quickly, but there are no causes worth dying for. You get one life, and a person who throws it away in exchange for an idea, he didn't deserve it in the first place.

I come and go from the front lines as it pleases me. The right people know who I am. They know I'll turn tail at the first sight of gold, but they also know that they'll get their money's worth. The people here still remember Malfear, and who'd be a soldier after that? Fanatics, idiots and idealists – and they all die quickly in a real battle. A good soldier is hard to come by – and I'm worth far more than they pay me.

When away from the front lines I take the traditional soldiers vacation. An alehouse followed by a brothel. I have enough charm to open a women's legs by conventional means, but gold is faster, and I doubt I have many years left. Sellswords don't retire – they keep going until they get too slow, then they die. I've been on and off the front lines for six years now, and you never see a mercenary over forty. The way I see it, I've got fifteen years left, at best, and I intend to make the most of them.

At present I am marching under the banner of Lord Theron as he prepares to assault Vespar. Theron is an old hand; he pays you late or not at all. I don't propose to wait to find out. I'll stick with the column until we near the city (a free meal is a free meal after all) then I'll take my leave. The birds tell me that Elic Grey is desperately trying to hold the walls. He's a desperate man with an entire seaport to plunder and half the men he needs – I reckon there's a good living to be made on his walls. The gold will flow thick and fast, Grey will reason it'll come back to his city anyway, and perhaps we win. Glory like that could keep a man set for years. In the more likely event that the walls fall – well – there are plenty of boats. I've often wondered what Kain is like.

It's not an ideal life, an ideal life never starts with so much fire and slaughter, but it's a life I've been able to choose. I've seen the world and experienced more in ten years than most little people will in a lifetime. By some narrow accounts I'm a bad man – there's no argument that I've done my share of dark deeds, but they were in a name of survival. A “bad man” is one who openly puts his own life first. A “good man” puts his own life first, then lies to the world about it. I sin, but I own my sin – I don't hide behind rank or ideals. I'm my own man, I bend my knee to no tyrant, I come as I please, stay and I like and go when I will. I sell my sword in exchange for freedom – if that makes me wicked then so be it.

This may seem like a silly question, but are the limits to the number of schools of magic just a baseline? As in, can characters eventually grow beyond that? I'm just curious because I thought that they were permanent limits.

In other news, I'm working on a cs now. :3

Does the same apply to shades, or are they stuck at one? Also, is it allowed to have more than one character, or do you want us to just stick to one. I didn't see anything about it, which is why I'm asking.
