Edit-maybe a random person he just picked at the air-port last minute? If he panicks thinking his parents wouldn't approve of him coming alone?

Alternatively, it could be someone from his school who uses the opportunity to get away from their ridiculously high expectations their parents set for them. At least for the holidays. Just spitball'n for you lot.
