During the hundred years war both England and France hired mercenaries in place of peasant levies due to their increased knowledge of fighting and to decrease the populace's war exhaustion and allow their conquests to continue unhindered.

We will play as one of these free companies hired by France in order to beat back the English.

There will be no magic, no a-historical technology, and no knights in our ranks. We will play the stories of those born into poverty seeking our place under the sun. Perhaps your character seeks a noble title, gold, glory, or a greater revolution.

Additionally, I seek a good degree of historical accuracy regarding arms/armour and fighting. If you solo challenge a knight, expect to lose. I'll post some resources when I get the OOC up.

No doubt about it. I'm in. This is too rare an opportunity not to take it.

Some time period detail:

Finances: Mercenaries during this time period were either fighting or raiding, and sometimes both. During the earlier edge of this time period, it wasn't overly uncommon for them to go un or underpaid. There were several sources of cash that companies would usually go after:

Payment: An honest day's work. Usually expected to participate in the battle more competently than the peasant levies we are replacing.
Raiding: When mercenaries go unpaid, they may raid there former employers lands. Taking small castles or forts and holding them for ransom to our employer is not overly uncommon. After the initial raid, it would be common for mercenaries to demand 'protection' money from the towns.
Ransom: When you capture an English Man-At-Arms, A knight, or a warhorse, you don't kill them. Historical ransoms have made countries go bankrupt, and anyone our company captures we get to sell off.

This idea has convinced me to evolve from lurking on the Guild for the last few weeks to finally signing-up. Now that the OOC is up, I'll get cracking on a CS. Might take a couple of days as I need to gen up a bit on period detail, so should be with you by the middle of the week :).
