So I am completely obsessed with the movie Pacific Rim and the thought of giant, man operated robot/fighting machines. Times are tough and near the end, nearly apocalyptic due to the alien invasions that keep occurring all over the world. There are several bases set up around the world, all under ground/water, all very secret, and all in communication with each other. There are machines that can be piloted by a single person, and there are machines that can take doubles or triples depending on the team and the links. For those that have not seen the movie, each machine that has more than 1 operated has to have a brain link to help them control the machines and be in sync with each other. I don't want it to be exactly like the movie, obviously, but something similar or roughly based off of it.

Would anyone be interested in an RP like this? Also, I am relatively new to the site and and still learning the basics, so would anyone want to tackle it together?

From what it sounds like, smaller Jeagers only need one pilot while the ones we see in movie need two, correct? Also, I don't have much experience GMing or Co-GMing but I can help pick up the slack if no one else will.

Actually, not true. A one-pilot Jaeger was attempted as a prototype when the governments of the world first decided to make them, but it killed the pilot due to the stress of trying to move a giant robot like that on your own. Piloting his Jaeger solo for so long is what intensified Pentecost's cancer, and Raleigh didn't exactly come out of it unscathed either. Two pilots is a necessity.

That said, this looks interesting and I love the source material. I might talk to one of my friends about partnering up. Mark me down for tentative interest.

I'm a little confused- are we fighting kaiju like in the source material or a more conventional alien invasion (like flying saucers and that kind of thing)?

@Polyphemus
Giant alien species. They are similar to the Kaiju but is is a stronger more resilient species. If I get some more interest I can post a long winded description, but I was just rattling off some ideas at first.

Definitely interested, hoping there's solid leeway in giant robot weapons and construction to allow for a wider variety of gimmicks and setting each player's machine apart. Eagerly awaiting setting details, I'm a big giant robot fan and somewhat less big kaiju movie fan so I can help with ideas and whatnot if you'd like.

Neat. I'm on board, got an idea for a mech run by the South African government.

Awesome! Would I will start working on details. Even though it is not a lot of people, if you all want to make more than 1 character that Is fine!

ASTEROIDS DESCENDING

Long after the rifts on the ocean floor were closed and the Kaiju were eliminated from Earth, the facilities that once defended the planet still stand. However, some were shut down by the governments of their countries. They continue to adapt and develop newer and better technology.

The year is 2033. Humans had grown lax in their efforts to defend the planet. Most believed that since the war with the Kaiju the war clock would never start again. Yet, there are a few compounds still up and running. It’s a good thing too, because now there is a threat of a whole new alien species coming from the skies. The alien species that is now invading the earth is called Malihini. They are giant, ugly, flying beasts that destroy everything in their paths. It is the job of the jaeger pilots and their teams to find a way to eliminate this species.

The rules are simple and self-explanatory.
NO GODMODING, NO DOING ANYTHING TO OTHER CHARACTERS THAT THEY DO NOT OKAY, ROMANCE IS OKAY BUT KEEP IT PG-13, HAVE FUN, NO NEGATIVITY

The deal is you can partner with other characters to pilot a jaeger, or you can make 2 of your own characters and have them work together. I was thinking that aside from the jaegers we can do smaller, single piloted robots that work as search and rescue. Also, you do not have to play a pilot or searcher/rescue. Your character can range from those above to scientists, to army soldiers, to captains, to janitors. Whatever you want to do!

Not trying to be a pain in the ass, but wouldn't it make sense to allow for single person jaegers? From a story perspective, if it's a followup where technology has continued to develop it stands to reason they would find a way to allow for single man piloting since the need for very specific duos makes finding candidates that much harder.

From a game perspective, it's just easier on the players for each to have their own machine without having to have a duo. Character development tends to suffer when people have two of them, two people trying to coordinate controlling the one thing could get bothersome and in the movie the Drift was pretty much just used to justify a quick and easy character link between the protagonists. It just feels like things would go smoother without having to force the team thing.

Allowing for individual pilots could also lead to more variety in characters. Teams broken up to serve in individual jaegers to maximize resources and feeling like they're missing a part of themselves, lone survivors getting back into the rumble after their parners have died, people who refuse to split their old school Drift teams and have the old system installed in newer machines and there's arguments about whether duo teams are more effective or not. It'd just be a part of the setting we could have fun with.

Also, how much freedom do we have when it comes to designing Jaegers? This is just me but I think it'd help broaden horizons if you allow the players to have things beyond what the movie mecha had. This is the next step, we have aliens coming from the stars just like we always thought they would (remember that opening narration?). It'd be fun if more independent, diverse research into Jager technologies as well as Kaiju and even the Malihini led to more variety in Jaeger development.

IDK what the rest of the potential players think.

If there are smaller aliens as well, I'm in. The idea of being a mech pilot doesn't appeal to me much. Power armor though.. Now that would be fun.

@Zero Hex

You may be right. Having single piloted jaegers may be easier. That is a good idea. So yes single pilots. You also have complete freedom when designing/describing your machines. I just posted the pictures as a type of base to give people who hadn't seen the movie an idea of what they looked like. I think that it would help the story line. And if you have any other questions or suggestions I would be game to hear them. I will make an OOC/IC once we have a more stable idea set. But I think this should be fun.

I'm actually pretty ok with single pilot Jeagers, plus having freedom to build what you want is definitely rad. If we could, I'd like to get some information on the aliens. How are they invading, what would the Be fighting, do the aliens have giant robots? We need some deets my friend.

Whoops.
