"Danny! Please! Wake up! Wake up!" Mirabella cried over her friend and new found love as he lay on the floor, staring blankly up at her with frightening gray eyes. She took his glasses, one of the lenses cracked, off his face, checking his head, and screaming a terrified shriek when she touched his head where the bucket had hit. They had killed him. The only person who ever understood her, who had tried to help her, who had loved her, was gone. She clutched his glasses in her hand and the blood soaked girl stood up, her angry and piercing blue eyes glowing ever so slightly as they fell upon the crowd. The sweet, shy, awkward little Mira was gone in that moment. The old Mira was not conscious, nor aware of what was going on.This was someone completely different. The lights above her cracked and exploded over everyone, making them scream.

They had reasons to scream, because they would soon lose their lives. Every single one of those unforgivable scum would soon be begging for mercy, just as she had so many times. But, just as mercy was never shown to neither she or Danny, she would not show it to them. She killed them all. Some were held down mentally to the floor while their classmates trampled over them in an attempt to get to the locked doors, while others were crushed between the bleachers trying to escape. Somewhere caught on fire. Some were thrown against walls and tables. Once the more disposable ones were out of the way, she moved onto the few who had caused her and Danny the most pain through out their years. A group of just twenty people. She took her time with these. The ones who had just been the lackeys she mentally choked until they fell to the floor lifeless. The leaders though, oh she had fun with them. She levitated broken shards of glass and slowly cut them, every inch of their skin, and when she grew tired of ones screams, she would slit their throat and move on to the next one.

The very last one trembled there. This was the most hated one. A pretty little bitch who had made her life miserable. The one who had taken the video of her and laughed, only to later post it on the internet for everyone to see. The one who had planned the prank that had killed her beloved Danny. This girl had ruined her life.

The girl looked up at her, begging her for her life to be spared, "Mirabella! Y-you don't want to do this! You'll regret this! All of this! For the rest of your life!"

"And what about Danny's life? WHAT ABOUT HIS LIFE!? DO YOU THINK HE'LL REGRET THIS?!" Mira's face suddenly grew darker as she stood over the girl, "Oh yes, that's right. He won't have a chance to. Because you killed him." With a snarl. she swiped her hand through the air and a sickening crack sounded as the girls neck was broken. With her last victim out of the way, Mira left. She ran home. She found her mother had broken out of the closet, and unable to find her, went to wash the horrid blood from her skin. She filled the tub and stripped down, slipping in. The blood filled her tub and looking down at her arms, still wet with the blood that had not only been poured over her, but the blood of the people she had killed, the emotional and scarred Mira suddenly snapped back into place and she began screaming.

The screams that escaped her filled her room and woke her up, the young blonde woman sitting up in her bed quickly, hysterical, biting down hard on her arm to muffle her screams and cries of fear at the painful memories that haunted her dreams. She laid back, sobbing and yelling into her pillow, trying to tell herself that what happened was all in the past. That it wasn't even her. That had been Mirabella. She wasn't Mirabella anymore. She was Annabella. Anna wouldn't do anything like that. Anna was a new person. Anna hadn't killed anyone. She hadn't killed anyone. No that was Mira who had done the deed. But even then, all the lights about her dorm room flickered wildly and busted, things about her room, including her bed levitating.

She took deep breaths, clawing at her pillow, ripping them by accident with her finger nails in an attempt to calm and soothe herself. When her mind was at least somewhat at ease, everything floating in the air dropped, her bed making a rather loud sound when it hit the floor. Her down stairs neighbors on the first floor of the dorms of course banged on their ceiling as if to tell her to shut up, thinking she was just playing around watching a scary movie or fooling around in bed, as they did every time she had one of her meltdowns. She didn't blame them. It couldn't be easy living in the same building as a freak such as herself. She was just thankful no one had asked too many questions about this. She had seemed to muffle her screams, cries, and loud noises enough where people didn't think too much of them. After all, she was a young college student. Surely she was just a crazy adolescent who was just having a bit of college fun. Or so they thought anyway.

Carefully rising from her bed, she went to take a quick shower to calm her nerves and after that, as well as getting a quick glass of water, went back to bed, though she didn't sleep. She couldn't, for fear of being bombarded by more unwanted memories.

..........

Anna got up early the next morning, figuring if she hadn't fallen asleep by then she probably wouldn't, and took to getting ready for college. She only had one class today. Her classes were pretty much spread out. She had one class on Tuesdays and Thursdays, another on Wednesdays, and three on Mondays and Fridays. She had Saturdays and Sundays off. It was good and less stressful that way. She first got dressed in the outfit she had picked out last night before heading bed, then did her hair, and lastly grabbed her bookbag before heading out the door and down the hall torward the dorm's elevator

She of course with her living on campus would always walk to her classes. Some students would often ride things like bikes, skateboards, and inline skates to and from class, and to be honest, she herself had thought of buying a bike to do just that as well, but just hadn't gotten around to it. Maybe in a few days once school work let up she would? She sighed as she made it to the elevator, pressing the button and waiting patiently for it to come up and the doors to open so she could get to the first floor and walk across campus to her class.

Bang.

The sound of the gunshot rang out in the forest, followed by a thump as the body hit the ground. Dark red blood pooled where bullet had rendered flesh. Heads turned with brows raised high. The shooter was unfazed. He lowered his rifle and lifted a hand to wipe the sweat that had beaded on his forehead. It was a bit of a warm morning, and he had been outside for quite a while, patiently stalking the prey that now lay dead in the grass. He relaxed his tense shoulders. The job was done.

“Nice work, Jay,” one of the other young men in the forest said, clapping him on the back. “That’s one steady hand you’ve got there. He was a big guy, but you took him down in one shot.”

Jay shrugged, “Just gotta know where to shoot, Ben.”

“Don’t sell yourself short,” another man spoke up. “Knowing where to shoot and hitting your mark are two different things.” He turned to the unmoving body. “He went down so fast, I’ll bet he hardly felt a thing.”

“That was the point,” Jay said. “I’m not in this to be cruel.”

The other men chuckled, and Ben spoke up again, “You’ve got a big heart, huh? Now, help us get him out of here.”

“Sure thing.”

The group of hunters gutted the dead elk and hauled its body onto the bed of a pickup truck. They drove back to a nearby cabin, where they skinned, cut, and bagged the meat, which was then put into a meat locker to cool, so it wouldn’t spoil. Jay sat with the rest of the men when their work was done, politely denying when they offered him a beer. “Thanks, but I’ve got class today.”

“Lightweight,” the hunter who offered him the drink rolled his eyes.

Jay just shook his head in response. In all honesty, he didn’t feel like drinking at five in the morning on a Tuesday, but these guys obviously had no qualms with it, so he decided to let it go. They were all peers at the same university—they had met at the school’s hunting and fishing club—but they spent so much time in the woods that it was easy for Jay to forget they were students too. He looked over his companions as they drank Heinekens and talked loudly with each other. Ben was a beefy guy with short-cropped, brown hair and a lot of tattoos; third year forestry major involved in the army ROTC program. Wyatt was lean and scruffy looking with wild eyes, almost as if he could be one of the animals they were hunting; fourth year philosophy major who had no idea what he was going to do after he got his degree. Lee was a bit smaller than the others, being of Chinese ethnicity, but he was the oldest among them at age twenty-four; first year graduate student with a degree in nursing. They were an odd group of guys without much in common, but their mutual affinity for hunting bonded them in friendship.

--

As the clock turned to six, they all piled into the truck to go back to the university. Jay, being the only one who didn’t have a beer, was naturally selected as their driver. The forest they were hunting in wasn’t too far from the college campus—as far as hunting grounds go, that is—so it only took them an hour to get back. They spent the time sharing stories of previous hunting trips: The time Lee killed a moose in Montana, but it got eaten by a bear before he could collect the meat; the time Wyatt forgot to wear his orange hunters’ vest and almost got shot by his friend; the time Jay and his brother, Jacob, stumbled upon a huge herd of bighorn sheep in Canada and brought back enough food to last their family for weeks… All in all, it was good fun, and the men were a bit disappointed to part ways when they arrived at the university.

Jay dropped the other three off at their respective apartments on-or-near campus, and then returned the truck to a parking garage near Ben’s place. It was Ben’s vehicle, so he had to leave it behind and walk back to his own apartment half a mile away. He didn’t mind the stroll though. It was early in the morning, so there weren’t many people outside to gawk at his bloodstained sleeves. Although, in the past he had been questioned by the campus police a few times for ‘suspicious behavior’ and had to explain to them that no, this was not human blood, and no, he was not a murderer. He chuckled softly at the memory.

Jay got home at about seven twenty. His roommate, Zack, was still asleep, so he was careful to move quietly as he stripped off his bloody clothes and got into the shower. He didn’t have class until half past eight, so he took advantage of the extra time and let the hot water wash over him for twenty minutes instead of his usual five. He would have stayed there even longer, but he heard a knock on the bathroom door, meaning Zack was awake.

“One sec!” Jay called in response. He shut off the water and wrapped a towel around his waist, then opened the door to let his roommate in. “All yours.”

“Thanks, man,” Zack said, bouncing from left foot to right. “I have to piss so bad.” He pushed past Jay to get into the bathroom and closed the door behind him.

“Dude, you’ve gotta stop chugging water right before you go to bed,” Jay laughed.

“Shut up,” Zack said from the other side of the door. “I needed to pre-hydrate for football practice today. We’re doing suicides because coach Miller hates us.”

“Fair enough,” Jay admitted. He left Zack alone and finished getting ready for the day. He tossed his hunting clothes into a hamper and put on a plain red t-shirt and blue jeans. Even after he styled his hair and got his books together, there was still plenty of time before his class would start. He didn’t feel like sitting around in his apartment though, so he decided to go to the food hub of the college campus for some breakfast.

“I’m heading out,” Jay said to Zack on his way out. His roommate was cramming for a test he had forgotten to study for. Despite his glasses, he wasn’t a very studious guy.

“Mhm,” Zack grunted without looking up. It was clear that he wasn’t paying attention.

“The world is burning and the apocalypse has begun,” Jay said flatly.

“Mhm.”

“There are zombies climbing in through your window.”

“Mhm.”

Jay sighed in defeat, “Catch you later, Zack.” He shut the door and walked to the food hub, hoping the line for bagels wouldn’t be too long.

Anna had to admit that she was getting a little aggravated. The elevator was taking so long to come down to the floor she was on and she was never a very patient person. She shifted her weight from one side to the other and in fixing the strap of her backpack. Finally though, the elevator came and she took it down to the main floor, leaving the dorm building from there to walk to the food hub. She was pretty early and figured that she could at least grab some breakfast to eat before class. When she there, it wasn't too long of a line. Soon she was at the counter and ordering a chicken biscuit and a iced coffee.

She waited patiently, though she found her gaze moving to look at the people around her in an almost nervous fashion. Ever since....the incident, she found herself worrying about those around her. She worried anyone would recognize her somehow, even though no one knew what she did, thanks to the school surveillance being ruined. She worried as well that she might accidentally hurt someone. Her powers...they weren't stable at all. She never knew when she might have an outburst. It was a frightening situation for her.

She took deep breaths, attempting to calm herself, relief flowing through her when they finally called her name for her order. She walked back to the counter and smiled slightly, saying a thank you as she grabbed her food. She turned to walk away, only to almost run straight into someone behind her. She gasped, jerking back quickly to stop the collision, the suddenness of it scaring her, the lights above flickering ever so slightly but thankfully not busting. It was something that could be blamed on the faulty wiring of the college building. Her blue eyes glanced up nervously at the lights for just a short instant, the glance so quick it could easy go un-noticed, before she took a deep breath and nervously looked up to see who she had almost run into.

Her voice quiet as well as shy and, as she always was when talking to anyone really, there was a nervousness to her posture at speaking to him, "S-sorry."

With that, she quickly walked around him, heading to the door of the food hub, glancing over her shoulder at him as she walked off, quickly heading toward the building her first class would be in.

Living in an apartment complex just off campus, Jay didn’t have a long walk to the food hub. On clear days, he could almost see the large building where all the restaurants and fast-food joints were housed from his second-story window. It was pretty convenient whenever he and Zack forgot to stock up on groceries or got tired of eating ramen noodles, sandwiches, and microwaved nachos. The only drawbacks of eating campus food were the price of it and the lines of students that sometimes stretched for many yards.

Fortunately, there weren’t too many people at the hub that morning. Most of the early classes at the university started at eight o’clock, but Jay’s psychology class began at the unusual time of eight thirty. So, unless there were other students with later classes who happened to be craving a bagel between eight and eight thirty, he often got lucky and didn’t have to wait for a long time to get his breakfast.

Jay got in line at the bagel shop—there were only three people in front of him—and ordered his food when he reached the cashier. He stood off to the side to wait until his number was called. He had a number ending in sixty-nine this time, which was fun because the student workers would often shout it in ridiculous voices. College humor like that was yet another thing Jay loved about living in a place surrounded by men and women of his own age. He smiled to himself. The fall semester hadn’t been going on for very long, but he was already having a great time. If things kept up like this, his junior year would be his best one yet.

“Order number sixty-nine!”

“Sixty-nine! Come and get it!”

The students waiting for their food snickered at the tirade of raunchy jokes that ensued until Jay claimed his bagel. He found a seat at an empty table to eat while he causally scrolled through Facebook on his phone until it was almost time for his class to start. Once he was done eating, he got up again to toss out his trash and head to the behavioral sciences building. However, he didn’t get very far before he was stopped.

As Jay was passing by another food shop, he couldn’t help but notice a pretty blonde woman standing in wait for her order. Momentarily forgetting his class, he slowed to a stop, brown eyes fixed on her back. The internal war began. He wanted to go up to her and say something, but the memories of his past girlfriends glued his feet to the floor. He wasn’t sure if he was ready to get back into the world of dating yet. He didn’t even know what to say if he did approach her. So, when the woman turned and started walking towards him, he froze. His face flushed and his mind went blank.

Apparently, the girl didn’t intend to talk to him. In fact, she didn’t seem to even notice he was there. He took a step back as she almost collided with him—he was still too startled to think clearly enough to move out of her way—and looked up as the lights overhead flickered suddenly. That’s weird, he frowned. You’d think a school of this size would pay for better wiring…

“No, it’s my fault,” Jay said quickly when the blonde woman apologized to him. “I wasn’t paying attention—” he faltered as she moved to get past him, making a beeline for the door. Just as fast as their little encounter had happened, it was over. He blinked in confusion, staring at the ghost of where she had been. What a strange person, he thought as he finally recovered enough sense to head to his class—of which he was now late. I wonder why she seemed so afraid…

Anna could feel her heart racing in her chest as she made her way quickly down the path toward the building her class would be in. She couldn't be around people. She didn't know why she thought she could do this. Why hadn't she just settled for a job without a degree? Her anxiety was up, eyes glancing about everywhere as she walked, worried and fearful of every person near her. What if someone found out what she could do? What if she was found out and locked up in jail? Or worse, experimented on? Panic began to rise in her and she had to force herself to stop, leaning against the wall of one of the buildings as she caught her breath and tried to calm down. No one knew what she was. She could keep it a secret. She just had to be more careful.

It was a psychology class, something that Anna wasn't too fond of. Perhaps it was because she knew she wasn't a very sound person psychologically that she shied away from such topics that were related to psychology. Yet, it was one of the required courses and so she had to take it, as much as she didn't want to. She took a deep breath as she made her way into the classroom and took a seat in the back, closest to the door in case she had to leave the class quickly and without much notice. Hopefully that wouldn't be something that would be needed, but it was still best to be safe, just in case.

Slowly, the students filed in one by one and she sat there as still and as quiet as possible, pretending to focus on the text book, her blonde hair acting as a curtain that shielded her face from those around her. It made her feel safe and hidden, so that she could look ahead and see the board as the teacher spoke, but those beside her couldn't see her.

The professor walked in, talking about different hings that she barely listened to, until he said the word 'group project'. Her heart sank at that term. She had to work with someone else? How could things get any worse? He explained the details of the project and she realized that, indeed, it could get worse. The partners were supposed to psych analyze each other and then choose a subject related to psychology to research. She didn't like this at all. The professor finished the instructions and then informed everyone to go ahead and choose partners, to which most people would immediately turn to their friends next to them to pick them as their partners. Some got up, walking around the large lecture hall to try and find a partner as well.

She herself felt so tense, standing there and looking around, hoping and praying that, perhaps, there might be an odd number of people and she could just do the project individually. Though, luck never really seemed to be on her side and she had a feeling that, despite her hoping for no partner, she would likely have a partner whether she wanted to or not.

Jay hurried to the behavioral sciences building. He had developed a quirk during his second year in university where he liked to sit in the front row of all his classes. Unfortunately, it was a difficult thing to do in a class of nearly five hundred people—PSY101 had one of the largest student bodies due to it being required for so many students. That paired with the fact that he was already running late meant that the odds were definitely not in his favor. He picked up his pace.

Luckily, it wasn’t a far walk to the building. Everything on campus was compacted together to make travel easy for students. If he had to, Jay could get from the north side of campus to the south side in just under thirty minutes on foot. He stepped inside the building and turned left, heading down the hallway towards lecture hall number 107, where his class was being held. He could hear from outside the door that the professor had already started teaching. Hopefully he hadn’t missed anything important.

Jay cracked the door open and slipped inside. Too late to go to the front row now, even if there were seats available. He crept quietly into a middle section and sat down in an empty chair, popping open the side table to use for notetaking and retrieving a pen and notebook from out of his backpack.

The lesson that day was about obedience and roleplaying. The professor talked to the class about Milgram’s electric chair experiment—subjects were told by an authority figure to shock a person in an electric chair, increasing voltage until the other “died” (although the shocked person was really just an actor)—and the Stanford prison experiment—subjects roleplayed as prison wards and prisoners, and the wards ended up torturing the prisoners due to false expectations of themselves. Jay hung on his words, morbidly fascinated by how people could be so ruthless to each other, just because they felt like they were supposed to be. He wondered if he would have done the same thing, if he were in their shoes. He would have liked to think he was above such terrible acts, but according to the studies, anyone could fall victim to the two mentalities. He shuddered. It was a bit frightening.

At the end of the lecture, the professor announced that there would be a group project due at the end of the semester. The class was to be paired off in groups of two, and each pair was to analyze each other’s behavior. They were to choose one psychological trait to study and then report on at the end of the experiment. The trait didn’t have to be something covered in class. When the instructions were over, he let them spend the rest of the class finding a partner to work with. Jay looked around the room. There were plenty of people he recognized: friends from other classes, neighbors from his apartment, teammates from the cross country team, members of Greek life… But he didn’t want to partner with somebody he already knew. That would be bias, right?

Jay heard a giggle off to his left. He turned to see a group of girls smiling and glancing in his direction. One of them gave another girl a push towards him. Clearly, they were trying to get her to ask him to be her partner, but she was nervous. He considered going over to ask her, himself—she was pretty cute, after all—but stopped when he saw the insignia on the girls’ backpacks: ΧΩ. Chi Omega. Sorority girls. He grimaced and looked away, bad memories resurfacing. He knew it was unfair of him to judge all of them for how his exes had behaved, but he couldn’t help it. He was zero for three when it came to dating girls in sororities. He stood up from his seat and moved to look for a partner somewhere else before the girl could work up the courage to talk to him.

It was then that he saw her. The girl from the food hub. Jay’s gaze fixed on her lithe form, standing so rigidly in the back row. Her pretty blonde hair like a curtain around her face; her blue eyes roaming nervously about the hall. Before he knew what he was doing, he found his feet carrying him towards her. He suddenly wanted to ask her to be his partner before any other guys could get to her first. Don’t think, just do it, he thought, swallowing the lump in his throat.

“Fancy seeing you here,” Jay said when he reached her side. “I didn’t know you were in this class. It’s pretty huge though, so I’m not surprised we haven’t crossed paths before today.” He held out his hand and offered her a friendly smile. “My name’s Jay. Want to be partners?”

Anna was hoping and praying that no one would choose her. Perhaps then maybe she could convince the professor to give her an alternate assignment of some sort. But it seemed her prayers were in vain, because soon she spotted someone walking toward her. The boy from the hub. She could feel her nervousness rise as she stood there, silently pleading for him to change his mind and turn around. Or that he was heading for someone near her and not actually her. But, he stopped in front of her and spoke, her wide blue eyes meeting his gaze, an unsure look on her face as he spoke. He spoke causally to her in greeting before asking her to be his partner.

There was a reason she avoided him in the hub. Unlike most guys here at the college who were very vain and full of themselves, he didn't seem to be like that. It reminded her so much of Danny...and it hurt. Danny had died because of her, or well, because of Mira. She didn't want to be the cause of someone else getting killed. She didn't want to get close to someone, only to have something terrible happen to them and have to relive that pain all over again.

She would just have to be careful. She couldn't get too close to him. She wasn't meant to have friends or anything of the sort, so she just had to make sure that, if they were partners on this project, that she kept it as just that. Nothing more than partners. She woudl have to keep telling herself that and keeping herself in check. She couldn't hide away forever and had to learn to control her emotions, no matter how hard it was. Keeping herself distanced, but at the same time being able to work with others, was something she needed to practice, and here she had a chance to do just that.

Taking a deep breath in attempt to calm herself, she looked to him, meeting his gaze once more, speaking quietly, a slightly unsure expression on her face as she spoke, "I...ummm, sure? I suppose we could...be partners that is." She could feel her heart racing in her chest, her nerves over whelming her senses. No. She had to stay calm. She couldn't let anything happen here, in front of so many people. She couldn't let the horror of that night repeat itself. Taking a few deep breaths, she spoke again, looking up to him, "My name's Annabella. Or...well...Anna for short. If it's easier for you that is."

Maybe going to a place that wasn't so crowded would make her feel better. There were plenty of places to go. The library, study rooms, even some of the restaurants around the food hub woudl be quiet and less crowded than this packed room of students, "Should we....go somewhere? To talk about what our project will be about?"

Jay was disappointed when the girl’s face fell. He had hoped she would be at least a little bit excited to have him as a partner. He had been about as friendly towards her as he could get. Instead, her big blue eyes widened like she was drowning in a sea of silent anxiety. It wasn’t the kind of look that gave a guy confidence. He looked back over his shoulder at the other students. Most of them seemed to have chosen their partners already and were leaving the room to discuss topics. There weren’t many solo people left.

His eyes wandered to the group of Chi Omega girls, who were still passing glances at him and talking amongst themselves. It seemed like they were waiting to find out the results of his interaction with the food hub girl. They continued to pat their friend on the back—the brunette who had originally shown interest in Jay—and nod at her encouragingly, as if they knew his interaction would go poorly. He wondered if they could see food hub girl’s expression from where they stood. Either way, he had to admit that they were probably right; things weren’t going as smoothly as he’d hoped.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, Jay thought, eyeing the sorority girl. Maybe she’s not like the others. This time could be different. It doesn’t even have to turn into anything more than a partnership. Nobody said I have to date her. Still, the thought left an uncomfortable weight in the pit of his stomach. In his heart, he knew that a partnership with that girl would turn into something more. It was clearly what she wanted, and he knew he couldn’t turn down a pretty face, even if that face belonged to someone in a sorority. He turned back to the blonde woman, whose demeanor still cried of quiet fear.

It didn’t seem he had a choice.

Jay opened his mouth, about to retract his offer, but she spoke first, accepting the proposal and giving him her name: Annabella. He froze, surprised by her sudden change of heart. He had been certain she would turn him down. Perhaps he had read her wrong after all. “Yeah, sure,” he blinked when she suggested that they go somewhere else to discuss the project, regaining his composure. “How about the library? It’s usually pretty quiet there.” He held out a hand, gesturing for her to walk ahead of him, and headed towards the door of the classroom.

On their way out, he couldn’t help but glance back at the Chi Omega clique. The girls were now shaking their heads, their previously approving looks had been wiped away and replaced with sneers of disgust. He could even hear faint whispers of the snide comments they made to cheer up their sullen friend:

What a jerk. Who would ever turn you down like that?

I saw him looking at you, too. Like he was interested. Such a dick move.

Yeah, you can do
so much better.

Come on. Let’s find you a hotter guy. Look, what do you think of that one over there…

Jay fought the urge to curl his lip. He knew how sorority girls operated—they always put their sisters before men—but he hated how they were so quick to slander him just because his intentions didn’t line up with theirs. Their venomous words reminded him of his exes. He shuddered. It was a good thing he hadn’t backed down and gone with the brunette after all.

“So, Anna,” Jay met his new partner’s gaze as they left the room, attempting to distract himself by engaging her in conversation. “What kind of topics are you interested in?”

Anna wasn't quite sure, but it almost seemed like the boy that had asked her to be his partner was about to change his mind. She hadn't missed the glances he had taken toward a group of girls standing off a little ways. Sorority girls. Anna had nothing against girls who decided to be in sororities, but she would never be in one. Perhaps if things had turned out different. If she didn't have these...powers. Maybe then she could live normally and be able to join a sorority and have friends. But, fate just wasn't kind to her in that way. She would never be one of those girls. She would just always be on her own.

As he gestured for her to take the lead, she nodded, walking out of the lecture hall, walking out of the building and toward the library where they could find some quiet to think and discuss their project. At his question on what she thought the project should be on, she looked over to him, thinking quietly for moment before speaking, "Well...I'm not all too big on science or psychology in general..." She said sheepishly, knowing that probably looked bad on her part. It was just a course she had to take and wasn't something she was all too interested in. Specifically for the fact that she felt as though she were a science experiment herself. Felt like, if people knew about her, she would become a science or psychology project for some company or government.

"I'm up for anything you have in mind though?" She said, giving a small shrug, shyly brushing her blonde hair behind her ear, looking over to him, "Or, if you have no preference, we can choose a random topic? A 'pull from the hat' sort of thing?" Even though science or psychology wasn't her thing, she would still work hard to make sure their project was good and that she wouldn't be one of those partners to make one partner do all the work while she goofed off.

Walking into the library, the two of them made their way into a study room, where they closed the door and she sat down at the table, glancing up at him shyly again, "I'll help in any way I can too. I'm not too good at putting together presentations, but I'm good at doing deep research." She had to, especially when her powers first began to show themselves, do a lot of deep research in high school, finding all sorts of sources to figure things out.

Jay relaxed as soon as he set foot outside of classroom 107. Out of sight, out of mind. He wasn’t about to let those sorority girls put him in a bad mood for the day. It was still just the morning, so plenty of good things were bound to happen before the sun would go down. In fact, one already had. He glanced at Anna. Now that she wasn’t so skittish, he could tell that she really was beautiful. His eyes were constantly drawn to the bounce of her blonde hair, the sway of her hips as she walked, the faraway look in her deep blue eyes. He still wasn’t sure if he was going to ask her to be more than just project partners—he had learned from his previous failed relationships that looks weren’t enough to make it work—but man, was he tempted.

“No preference here,” Jay shrugged when Anna asked him what he wanted to do for the project. “I like your idea for choosing a topic randomly though. “Maybe we could each find three different subjects that we like online and choose one randomly.” He already knew one of the topics he wanted to add to the mix: the lesson from their class that day. It was interesting stuff, but he didn’t want to choose it right away because there might be another topic he liked better. Plus, he didn’t want Anna to think he was a sadist or anything. ‘Obedience and Roleplaying’ contained a lot of dark subject matter.

When they got to the study room in the library, Jay took a seat across from Anna. He nodded at her mention of being better at doing research than presenting. “We’ll make a great team then,” he commented. “Because I think research is boring, but I enjoy presenting in front of other people.” He had always liked being in the spotlight. He found the adrenaline rush of public speaking invigorating.

Jay reached into his bag, which he had set on the floor upon sitting down at the table, and retrieved his laptop, “Now that we have our jobs sorted out, we might as well choose a topic, eh? I’ll look up three, and you do the same; then we’ll write them down on notecards and shuffle them on the table.” He smiled at Anna. “You can do the honor of picking our project. Sound good?”

Being away from the crowded classroom, Anna felt a little more at ease. Perhaps not as at ease as she might have been if she was by herself, but it was still better than being stuck in a room surrounded by over a hundred people that she didn't know. Sitting in the study room of the library, she felt like she could finally breathe. She took in a deep breath and got out her own laptop, placing it on the table. Then she began searching, trying to find some interesting topics that they might be able to do for their project. She supposed she wanted to something simple. After all, psychology was a...touchy subject for her. She didn't want to do research and find all the things that she knew was wrong with her. So, she needed to stick to the most simple things they could do, while at the same time keeping it at a college level content so that they could get a good grade.

She went through topic after topic on the internet, and when she would find one that seemed interesting, she would jot it down before moving on to the next topic, trying to find some that would be good to work with. After a little bit, she finally had her three topics and wrote them all down on the index cards, before flipping them over and placing them in the pile with the three cards that he had written up as well. With all six cards were settled on the table, she turned her head away so that he could mix them up and she wouldn't see which cards went where. Once they were all mixed up, she turned back to the cards and picked up the one that was furthest from her, and lifted it so she could read it.

"The Psychology of Survival?" Anna wasn't sure how she felt about that topic...it reminded her too much of the past. Back when the...incident happened. It had truly felt like a moment of survival to her at the time. As though it were her or those people. They had already killed Danny...

Just thinking about it made her hands tighten ever so slightly on the card, though after a moment she took a few deep breaths to calm herself, making it all seem almost unnoticeable by Jay. She needed to be careful. She couldn't let her emotions get int eh way and have him start to get suspicious of something. She slowly nodded, "Okay, so how do we want to do this? Did you have any ideas for it? Or should I do some research on it and we come up with something based on the research?"

Jay went to work right away in the hunt for research topics. He retrieved three notecards and a pen from his backpack, ready to write down his choices, and entered ‘Psychology of…’ into the Google search engine. Dozens of web articles popped up in response, so he scrolled down the list and skimmed the titles of each as he looked for something to pique his interest. The options were seemingly endless. He whistled quietly as he read subject after subject. He had had no idea how diverse psychology was. It was going to be harder than he thought to choose just three.

Psychology of Sport and Exercise
Psychology of Color
Psychology of Violence
Psychology of Social Status
Psychology of Selfies

Jay paused to laugh at that last one. He found it funny that some scientist in the world took the time and effort to study people taking pictures of themselves. Then again, somebody had to do it eventually. It seemed like everything else had been studied already. He continued down the list:

Psychology of Eating
Psychology of Attractiveness
Psychology of Survival

He stopped again, his cursor hovering over the last title. Growing up in a family of outdoorsy people, he had always been fascinated with survival. He had been camping with his brother and father countless times—like real camping: in the middle of the mountains with no bathrooms and just a nearby stream for water—so he felt like he had a pretty solid understanding of survival. However, he had never once thought about the processes of his brain when he was out in the wilderness. It might have been interesting to study. He wrote it down on one of the three notecards, along with ‘Psychology of Obedience and Roleplaying’—he was still too interested in that one to pass it up—and ‘Psychology of Tattoos’—he didn’t know if Anna had any tattoos, but he had three, himself, so it could have been interesting to study what caused a person to choose whether or not to permanently mark his or her body.

Having picked out his three research subjects, Jay turned the cards face down and shuffled them together with Anna’s choices in the center of the table. He watched as she selected one at random, and was pleased to see it was his favorite option: ‘Psychology of Survival.’ He grinned, excited to come up with a plan as to how they would go about researching the chosen topic. She didn’t seem quite as enthusiastic as he was, but he hoped he could change her mind. She was probably just uncomfortable about the idea of survival, like many other girls he knew. But also like many other girls, she would probably warm up to it with time.

“I don’t have any specific ideas for it right now,” Jay answered her question with a shrug. He leaned back in his chair and folded his arms over his chest. “We have to study each other though, right? I was thinking we could put together some sort of survival situation and see how the other person responds. I don’t know what that would look like yet, but it’s one option.” He offered her a friendly smile. “You don’t have to worry. It wouldn’t be anything intentionally dangerous, and I have a lot of experience, so I can make sure we stay safe.”

A survival aituation? Once again Anna could feel herself beginning to grow nervous. In a survival situation, her powers were going to be a problem. If she felt endangered or threatened, her powers always just seemed to act on their own, something that wasn't good when she was still trying to hide her powers and her past from people. But, he was saying he wouldn't try to make it dangerous and that he would make sure that they were safe. So, whatever they came up with wouldn't be so bad. Right?

She looked to him and slowly nodded, though there was still a slightly unsure look on her face about all of it, "Well...I suppose if you promise it will all be safe, then we could go with something like that." What sort of survival situation would it be she wondered. It wasnt like there were many safe things to do to go into a 'survival mindset'. But then again, looking at Jay, he seemed like the type of guy that would like the outdoors. So, of course her first thought on the type of survival situation would he choose would have to do with the wilderness.

"Ummm...I can go ahead and do some research while you look for or think about our survival situation? Maybe we could get started on working on the research through out the week and then try the survival situation this weekend? If you've picked the situation by thus weekend that is, or didn't have any other plans?" She questioned, not wanting to intrude if he had already made plans this weekend.

Judging from the way the girls in the classroom seemed to swoon over him and how undeniably good looking he was, he probably had a girlfriend or something to go out with. If he did, it wouldn't surprise her at all. She on the other hand didn't have anywhere to be or anyone to hang out with. It was all about school work for her, so that she could keep her scholarship. Plus, it wasnt like she had anyone to hang out with anyway, "I'm pretty much free to work on the project any time."

Jay was pleased to hear Anna agree to engage in a survival situation with him, even if she did so reluctantly. Hopefully she’ll warm up to the idea later, he thought. ‘Survival’ could sound intimidating at first, but he knew it could also be a lot of fun. His heart was already beating a little faster with excitement at all the possibilities. They could go camping in the woods with only a bare minimum of supplies; they could take a trip rafting down a river; or they could go backpacking in the mountains. He didn’t care what they chose. Anything would be great to him.

He clicked his ballpoint pen in thought when Anna asked if he had time to work on the project with her over the weekend. He was always busy with various events on weekends, but he couldn’t remember what, if anything, was going on during the next one. There wouldn’t be a cross country race yet—the season had only just begun, so they were still training—but his fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon (ΔΚΕ, or ‘Deke’ for short), always seemed to have something planned.

“Let me check,” Jay said, reaching for his phone. He opened up his calendar to see what his weekend looked like. He was glad he had decided to make note of all the events this time around. He hadn’t done so during his freshman or sophomore years, and he had had a wild experience trying to remember when things were happening. This time, it looked like there were two events, one on Friday and another on Saturday. On Friday, Deke was hosting a paintball tournament. He definitely wanted to go to that. However, the Saturday event was a “bad movie” party at the frat house. Having been a part of Deke for two years, he knew how that was going to go down: All of his brothers would get shitface drunk and hook up with the sorority girls they invited. Personally, Jay had never been fond of drinking events. He attended a few of them every once in a while—mostly for the sake of bonding with his brothers—but he preferred to be sober.

“I’ve got plans on Friday night, but I’m free for the rest of the weekend,” he announced, deciding not to go to the movie night. He put his phone back down on the table again. “I know I said I prefer presenting, but I promise I’m not gonna make you do all of the hard work, Anna.” He didn’t want her to think he was going to leave all of the preliminary work to her. He had had enough lazy partners in the past to know how annoying that could be. “I’ll do some research this week, too, and we can meet up on Saturday to discuss what we find. How about we get together again at noon to grab lunch at the hub? Oh, and one more thing,” He picked up his phone again. “Do you mind giving me your number so we can stay in touch? Just in case plans change, or we need to reach each other for whatever reason, you know?”

Anna watched as he looked through his schedule for the week. It seemed as though he was a very busy person if he had to keep up with everything through a calendar. All she knew or ever wrote down to remember was the due dates for assignments. Never any social events or hanging out. She didn't even have any events to go to or anyone to hang out with anyway. When he mentioned meeting Saturday for lunch at the hub and to work on their project. She nodded, "Sure. That should work for me." She said and watched as he picked up his phone and asked for her phone number. Well, she supposed he was right. It would be easier to keep in touch that way in case something came up or they had any questions to ask each other.

"Um...okay. I just got a new phone, so let me check and see what the number is." She had indeed just recently bought her phone after her left over money from the scholarship had come in. She figured it would be a good way to communicate with others, being that she couldn't use her old one since the phone plan was under her mother's name. She took out the phone and after going to the numbers, found hers and read it out to him so that he could type the number into his own phone and could text her so she knew what his number was as well.

Once they both had each other's numbers, she put her phone away and looked back at him with another shy look, slightly unsure of what to say now, "I better go get some school work done." With that, she stood up, gathering her things together and placing them in her bookbag. Once everything was packed, she looked back over to him just as shyly as before, "So, I....um...I guess I'll see you Saturday."
