Now accepting applications

Summary:

- Sci-fi adventure that takes place in the Star Trek universes prime timeline.
- Characters are a new bridge crew for a new Federation vessel, continuing the mission of all Starfleet vessels and boldly going all over the place.
- The timeline is set two years after the Hobus supernova and the destruction of Romulus (2389 CE)
- Players will be taking the roles of bridge crew aboard the USS Minotaur, a retrofitted Excelsior-class starship.
- We will play a varied group of Starfleet personnel, with characters present from more-or-less any race of their choosing; use your head with this one, no Borg or Jem'Hadar for example.
- This will be a 'high casual' to Advanced RP in terms of writing quality. Character sheets will be accepted based on merit alone, not 'first come first serve'.

In Character Info:

Greetings from Starfleet Command,

In response to recent events taking place within the Romulan Star Empire, it has been decided to lend all possible aid to the Romulan people and the provisional government which currently holds power. To this end, you are one of those now contacted for present and immediate service aboard the USS Minotaur, your particular skills and successful graduation from Starfleet Academy have given you leave to join the bridge crew under Captain Rutherford.

Please report to Starfleet Headquarters by Thursday the fifteenth at no later than noon, for transportation to dry-dock.

All details pertaining to your mission shall be given in briefing aboard the Minotaur.

Good luck.

Out of character info:

Congratulations, you have just been recommended and assigned to the bridge crew of the NCC-81521 Minotaur, a vessel currently in dry-dock in orbit but soon to be heading toward what was once the Romulan Neutral Zone; circumstances being what they are, your group of Junior Officers was assembled to helm the presently refitted ship and direct your course into what has been – until very recently – 'enemy' territory.

Although you may well be only a Junior Officer, you are fresh and level-headed, and your marks at your chosen branch of Starfleet Academy have made sure that you were put forward for this opportunity to go where almost no Federation vessel has gone before.

I have made the entire plot and specific details of this RP brief and vague, as I much prefer to develop things through the actual writing itself. What I am looking at doing here is a simple mission that can/may become slightly 'sandbox-like' depending on the development of and particular characters that we have aboard.

We will be taking the part of the bridge crew but, as with any ST TV series, the bridge crew will make up a good part of any Away Team.

I will be looking for the usual sections/branches of personnel for us to get going – engineering, security, and so on - but nothing more particular at this point in time.

This is going to be a very character driven RP, again much like the TV shows, so if you cannot form paragraphs around interaction and the like then you're going to have a hard time. There will be some action, of course, but much more beside as well.

If you find your own knowledge of the Star Trek universe a little lacking, I'd suggest that you use Memory Alpha (the most accurate ST wiki thus far) as a resource. A simple Google search can also yield information.

Rules

- Sort your squabbles out in private. If you persistently disagree with another player or they're grieving you, involve me. If necessary, I will smite you myself.

- No godmodding (controlling someone else's character). Obviously.

- Real life creeps up on everybody and sometimes you just don't feel like, or don't have the time to churn out a lengthy, quality post. That is fine, but try to post something just to keep things moving at least once every fortnight.

- One character per player.

- My decisions, or that of my co-GM, are final.

Character Sheet

Submit your characters in a hider in the OOC tab. Accepted characters can be posted in the Characters tab later.

Name and Rank: (Ensign to Lieutenant Commander)

Race/Species:

Description: (Please include their bodily appearance and anything you might like to say about their clothing and so forth. No pictures, please.)

Please include any particular specializations or courses they may have partaken in at the Academy, as well as what their specific area of expertise may be; engineering, medical and so on. This can be done in bullet points or with prose.)

I have tried so hard not to make a comment that might seem negative but "Are the Klingons now Spider People?"
It's as if the crappy Pajama Uniform from Star Trek the Movie is trying to ruin the franchise

I know that TNG changed their look as well but obviously it was better thought out

When they changed it between TOS and the Star Trek Motion Picture it was cause budget and makeup had improved to the point that they could make the Klingon's look how they wanted rather than having them look like an amalgamation of eastern ethnicity. This just feels like they're changing the look for the sake of changing the look.

@Jbcool We're the bridge crew but also just graduated from the academy? Is Star Fleet severely short staffed? I remember that happening twice. Once was cause Picard felt guilty getting some annoying kid's dad killed so he let him be a bridge crew ensign and the other was a trainee crew that took over after the overseeing officers were killed. It seems sort of irresponsible to place people with no field experience in command level roles. The fate of the Valiant should attest to how badly wrong that can go.

@Prince of Seraphs I never said they just graduated, I said that they had graduated, meaning that they are graduates of the Academy. Think, why would you be requested due to your skills etc if, as you correctly state, you had just graduated?

In short, all characters have been out of the Academy for a while and - although they may not be 'experienced' per se - it is highly likely that they've served aboard a starship of some sort before. This could have been pre-Academy or after...or both! Which is why they've been assigned to the Minotaur.

I understand, reading it all back now, that it does look like what you say is what I meant. But it isn't, I hope that's cleared things up.

@Jbcool That makes a bit more sense, but the Rank section of the CS limits you to the ranks between and including Ensign and Lieutenant Junior Grade which are awfully low ranks for senior bridge officers. I think the lowest for the main bridge crew was Lieutenant Commander.

Good point, so let me mull on that for a bit - until then, I'll boot the rank up to Lt. Commander as the higher one.

Department heads might be at rank Lt. Commander but the other positions would be covered by Lieutenants and Ensigns with officers making up perhaps 15% of the ships crew.

Oh and many forget that there is a rank between that of Ensign and Lieutenant so I thought this chart might be helpful

@RumikoOhara Unless we're those guys that sit on the bridge, operate the terminals, never have a line of dialogue and about half the time die to illustrate the threat of the current bad guys then as bridge crew we would be department heads.

Out of curiosity which version of the Star Trek uniform are we going to be using? I was personally a fan of the Voyager and early DS9 design but I suppose the First Contact uniform would be considered cannon for this point in the timeline.

I would imagine that the DS9/First Contact/Nemesis uniform style would be the go-to style, I'd be open to a slight change though if people wanted it changed. It may have even changed by this time period.

The USS Minotaur would be between 100 to 75 years old but her class is still a reliable workhorse

We can always say she has just undergone a total refit after being heavily damaged in some battle with a minor race's fleet; It took a fleet to damage her 6-12 ships at once which means she as a ship has her own glory and perhaps even an Admiral as her patron who served aboard her or commanded her during the Borg War or even the Dominion war

Because she was in the Refit Yards for say 2 years her crew was needed to fill places in the Fleet meaning she'd need a new crew from the ground up

I actually agree with the Department head part for Bridge crew but feel it necessary to say that on a ship with 700-1000 crew it is common that the first officer is a Lt. Commander or perhaps a Full Commander but our ship isn't exactly a front line ship at her age. Because of that I can see her having Lieutenant JG as a department head placed there to season them for promotion; Geordi was appointed CE he was raised to the Rank of Lieutenant Commander but the Enterprise D is a newer ship and much larger than an Excelsior class.

I hope I don't come across as a pain but I am a hardcore Trek Fan and have been running a LUG campaign for 8 years now and love to read the novels so I've picked up a lot of details; even now I am reading the Typhoon Pact books and while not canon it is a good read

It doesn't, I was going to reveal that in the first IC post...but it is; may as well put that up now, since now everyone will know.

The picture in the OP is also of an Excelsior-class, but it's fair enough that that isn't really a clue.

@Jbcool So it's decided then that the Minotaur is a very old ship that's been recently refitted? Cause just because it's an Excelsior doesn't mean it dates back to the time of the Enterprise-B. That class of ship has formed the backbone of the Federation Fleet for more than a hundred years after its initial design so they can't all be from the original line.

I would have liked one of the PDI ship classes like a Saber, Steamrunner or an Akira

@Prince of Seraphs This is good that we discuss the ship as it will fit the crew better

In my offered Star Trek RP I used a Pathfinder class which replaced the old Oberth class as a science ship
