New professor orientation was an experience unlike any other and the white haired man walked through the castle grounds of Hogwarts almost mesmerized. “Whoa…” He said as he dropped his bag that was on his shoulder to the ground in shock, his ember eyes gazing upwards towards the towers of the school. Durmstrang Institute wasn’t anywhere near this big Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, and the new Potions professor was learning this after hand.

Taking a long drag off of his cigarette, he blew out the smoke and let a long sigh left him. Whoa, this is crazy. The white haired man reached into his pocket and pulled out a small vile. Popping off the top, he put the butt of the cigarette into the vile and put it back into his pocket. “Yelp, better find my way around.” Picking up his bag and using the same map that the new students received, the man ventured into the castle to a world unknown.

It didn’t take him long to find the dungeon (you head downwards, it’s not hard) and his classroom. Walking inside he let out a relaxed sigh as he looked around. Supplies and potion mixtures lined the wall and the room was well kept. Good, he wouldn’t have to do any changing; instead he could just add his own flair to things. “Thank god, the person before me actually knew potions!” Nothing excited the man more than being able to mix potions and it should come as no surprise that the first thing he did was test each cauldron within the room to make sure they were balanced properly and do not leak.

After spending a good three hours playing - er testing, the devices that were going to be used during class the young man explored the room more, finding a door to the back which lead into his living quarters. “Talk about never getting away…” He muttered under his breathe with a small shrug. All of his belongings were already brought to the room and he gave his chest a gentle kick. The latch unlocked and the items flew out of the chest and into their respective areas.

His ember eyes scanned the room before landing on a piece of paper on his nightstand, wondering over he picked up the paper to find it reading –

Welcome to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry,

You have been carefully selected to teach the gifted children in this school. Today is staff orientation, please make your away to the staff break room on the third floor.

We will be going over the basics of the school and provide introductions along with announcements of how will head each house. Please come in your staff robes and prepare to eat as we will be having supper.

Headmaster

Whelp, time to go! Turning to his closet he changed into his professor robes and began to follow the map to head to the staff lounge. This is Gabrial Warren and, unknown to him, he was about to become the new head of Slytherin House.

"Oi, don't be tryin' anythin' funny there Thomasin or I'll knock ya silly." Fianna Quinn laughed at the redhead who had come to Hogwarts a year after her. Like her, he was a Head of a House but unlike him, she didn't mind having a drink or two to celebrate. And in good Irish tradition she was having a bit of whiskey on the rocks. This would be her third year teaching Transfiguration and she was excited to greet the old faces as well as the new ones. Poor Thomasin didn't understand her humor, despite being colleagues for a year already, and simply blushed and excused himself quietly, under the impression he had somehow angered the Transfiguration professor.

In reality she just liked messing with the lad and found him endearing, but also a tad dull.

Though she knew she had to cut back on the drinking and so once she finished her current glass of golden nectar, she stuck to sparkling water and mingled with the returning professors as they awaited the arrival of the new professors, though there was only three or four new professors. The current and returning professors had banded together to have a small party before orientation began, as they had all gone through it before, they thought a drink or two before hand would liven things up a bit.

Fianna found it easy to talk to her fellow instructors. She had already settled into her old quarters, glad to do very little world to make it feel like home. No matter how many times she looked out the window overlooking the lake, she felt so grateful to be where she was. She loved grading papers and helping students become better witches and wizards, but also better people. Many students came to her because of her honesty and passion and that was something Fianna knew she would never outgrow. The long haired woman saw Thomasin out of the corner of her eye and she tossed him a friendly grin which he shyly returned.

"Boy, it boggles the mind how someone so quiet can teach Charms. I would have thought well, a charmer would teach charms." She laughed to one of the other professors as they discussed how their summer had been. Over her summer, Fianna had gone back to Galway and enjoyed time with her family. Soon it came time for everyone to migrate up to the third floor so they could find out who was new to the school and go over the usual rules and procedures.

Walking near the front of the pack, Fianna brushed her hair back, her own dark robes sporting the red and gold Gryffindor crest. She was glad to be Head of Gryffindor and knew she would make sure her students did right by the school and its high expectations. Since she was one of the first to step into the break room and check out who their new co-workers would be. She flashed a bright smile to the select newcomers and moved over to the side.

Since Headmaster McGonagall had yet to arrive and begin her speech, Fianna saw no reason not to take it upon herself to break the ice, recalling how nervous she had been when she first began at Hogwarts. "How's it going? My name's Fianna. It's real good to meet ya. What are you teachin'?" She leaned over towards a male with light snowy hair. "If ya need anythin' at all, I'd be glad to lend a hand or even two." She chuckled lightly, patting his shoulder lightly. Fianna had been told more than once to be mindful of other people's physical space but she couldn't help but think a handshake didn't do a meeting or feeling enough justice. So sometimes she would offer a hug or a pat on the back or shoulder, boundaries sometimes be damned in her book.

To Gabrial’s surprise, when he opened the door to the professor’s lounge, he was greeted with cheerful laughter and a lot of chatter. A smile moved across his fine lips showing his straight white teeth as he entered inside and shut the door behind him. Gazes met his and he provided a friendly smile along with a nod which was met with a positive response. This was nice, everyone seemed rather friendly.

It wasn’t long before the alcohol to come into view and the white haired man slid to the area and poured himself a glass of scotch. As soon as he finished he found himself engaged with a short plump professor who introduced herself as the Herbology professor. He, being excited, introduced himself to her and the conversation quickly turned to his favorite topic, potions. She did inform him that he had some big shoes to fill and he flashed a confident grin explaining he looked forward to that challenge. The man led the conversation from one topic to another in a smooth transition learning more and more about the kind woman. There was no doubt they would be in touch multiple times through the year.

Soon he excused himself to top off his scotch before he turned around, this time he was met with a woman closer to his age. The long brunette haired girl had engaged him in conversation first; boy everyone here was really friendly. This was going to be very nice! “Hello!” He responded with followed by a bright and charming smile. “I’m Gabrial Warren, I’m the new Potion’s Professor.” Feeling her pat him on the shoulder made him chuckle and he reached up, taking her hand softly in his and giving the back of her hand a gentle kiss. “It’s a pleasure to meet you.” With that he let go of her hand and reached into his pocket with his now free hand.

“Actually I do have a question.” With a small gesture he pulled her over to a near by table and opened the map. Setting his scotch down on the corner of the table, “So, I came in here.” He said pointing towards a section of the map, “I walked this way…” His finger followed his vocal instructions. “And went down into the dungeon. So, tomorrow morning for breakfast I would find my way to the ‘Great Hall’ by following this path right?” His elegant fingers traced along the map to indicate that he was taking the best route. “Oh! I like to go for runs so, where would you recommend I run?” If you honestly wanted answers, always ask a ‘local’.

As the man introduced himself as Gabrial Warren, Fianna kept her hand on his shoulder loosely until the man took it and kissed the back of it. Now that was a fun surprise. "Potions, you seem much more like a Charms Professor if you ya ask me." She laughed lightly at him, giving him a wide grin. "Yes, quite a pleasure I'd say." She agreed, amused and intrigued that one of the new professors was so friendly. It was like a giant breath of fresh air. Fianna was hopeful she could call Gabrial a friend since in her mind, one could never have too many of those, especially when you had a tough job teaching the next generation of witches and wizards.

Her hand dropped back to her side while her other cradled her goblet filled with bubbly water. She was eager to get to dinner soon, keen on having a bit of wine before bed. Tomorrow would be a big day with students arriving but it still gave the professors a day to prep before classes began the following day. For now Fianna wanted to focus on building further relationships with her fellow colleagues as they had to rely on one another to be the best teachers but to also stay sane during tough moments. "Eh?" She looked to Gabrial when he mentioned he did have a question.

Following to where he had moved, the woman looked down at the map he was using in order to find his way to The Great Hall. The castle could be confusing but then it dawned on her. "Ahh you must not be a Hogwarts alum." SHe realized. Hogwarts tended to hire from both previous Hogwarts students but also outsiders from other schools. She felt foolish for having assumed he had once roamed the halls as a student. She blushed slightly. "Aha, my apologies for my assumption." She laughed a little and gestured to the most direct route for him to take. "So you're right about where you'd go to get to The Great Hall." She confirmed his uncertainty, not wanting him to get lost on his way to breakfast.

But since the students wouldn't be coming until the late afternoon, she was sure he'd get the hang of a few necessary pathways around the castle quick enough. "Runs?" She repeated, needing a moment to figure out his meaning. "Oh like running." She paused to think for a moment. "I believe a jaunt around the Quidditch pitch might be much like a track but I'd also suggest down by the lake if ya'd like a better view than just the green grass. If ya feelin' brave you could try to the forest but ahhh I wouldn't." Fianna laughed lightly and took a sip of her water. "I didn't peg you as a running type though, you're blowing through all my assumptions of you." She said bluntly, her tone amused. "I like it." She then said quickly and patted him on the back.

"Ya gonna keep me on my toes, I can tell."

Looking over at the door, a tall grey haired witch entered the room and soon the chatter faded away.

"Good evening everyone. I am Minerva McGonagall, Headmaster or Headmistress of Hogwarts. I am a former professor of Transfiguration though it seems Professor Quinn has been doing a fine job as my successor." The woman began to say. "Now I have a few things to note before we head off to The Great Hall for dinner." Her accent was Scottish and many knew her credentials and history without her needing to spell it out. "I would like to introduce our four new incoming professors for the new school year. We should all do our best to be accommodating and help them in any way possible. Most notably is our new Potions Master, Gabrail Warren." She paused and gestured to the white haired man by Fianna. "Would you care to say a few words, my dear?" She asked him.

“Charms?” He responded with laugh, “Blowing up things isn’t as easy in charms and there’s nothing better than failure because failure is true progress.” A nod rose and fell his head before he gave her a charming yet sly grin. “And I don’t need a charm to win the heart of a fair lady……. There are potions for that.” To which he added a heartfelt laugh to confirm that he was, indeed, joking with her.

“Durmstrang was not my first, second or third choice to teach at, the last thing I want to do is return there.” He said with a chuckle indicating that he was not a former student but to that he tilted his head. “You know what they say? ‘Durmstrang oozes strength, charm and charisma. Strength to protect those around us, charm to help us succeed in our goals and charisma to give us the true drive to strive forward.” He gave her a gentle judge with his elbow as they leaned over the map together. “So if you need any strength, charm or charisma; come to me. That or just someone to joke with, personally I think I have a great sense of humor along with good looks, brains and wit but hey… what do I know.” His tongue and cheek personality pushing through as he gave her a grin of grins.

Her statement of the running locations caused his finger to trace along the paths she mentioned as if drawing it into his mind. Gabrial’s eyebrow rose in her direction as she said he kept her on her toes and she liked that he was blowing through all of her assumptions that were made off of first glance. A smirk moved across his lips as he leaned over the table a little more. “I’m full of surprises…”

The door opened and he pulled himself upright, his gaze following the nose to see the headmaster. He had met her during his interview process and smiled politely as they made eye contact. It didn’t come as a surprise that the woman would have him begin with the introductions. He was a talker anyway so why not have him begin. “Hello everyone, I am Gabrial Warren, the new Potions professor. I am graduated from Durmstrang Institute and did a large amount of schooling as training for becoming a potions master. My knowledge on the subject is continuously growing so you may find me out in the Herbology garden or in the library if I’m not in the dungeons mixing potions. If there’s anything that someone could use help with please reach out to me, I am always willing to help.”

When the new professor finished, Minerva spoke up reaching into her pocket and presenting him with something. “As the potions master, we at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry you are also entitled to be the head of the Slytherin Household. If you do not want to do so, it can be assigned to another professor….”

Before she could finish, the white haired man cupped his hands around Minerva’s extended hand. “It would be my honor.” With that he took the emblem and attached it to his robes with a sense of pride. How he was not only the new guy but he was in charge of some students.

After all the introductions the staff members headed towards the great hall together, Gabrial fell into step with Fianna, “Hey you have an emblem too!” He said with a charming smile, “What house are you in charge of?”

Gabrial hailing from Durmstrang was interesting and something she hadn't guessed. It was a school she hadn't been to. Though the Scandinavian region did contain a lot of places she was sure would be fun to visit, despite Gabrail's need to distance himself between him and the school. Perhaps maybe it was the harsh weather? Fianna wasn't sure if that's what people said about Durmstrang but she would have to follow up on that over dinner. All she did was offer him a dry laugh and shake of her head. Potions was a subject she did well in but it was an uphill battle compared to other subjects so she had to see if maybe the new professor could give her some tips.

Before having a chance to counter his suggestive comment, their ever faithful and fearless Headmaster entered the room. Glancing to Gabrail, Fianna looked back to Minerva as she began to address everyone and eventually gave one of the new teachers, Gabrial getting the luck of the draw, to go first with introductions. She listened as both Minerva and Gabrial exchange a few warm words before he effortless accepted his position of Head of Slytherin. Fianna found it funny how he hadn't been informed sooner but she had to guess it had simply slipped Minerva's mind during the tedious interview process which Fianna didn't remember fondly due to the background checks or other hoops that teachers had to jump through to teach at such a prestigious school like Hogwarts.

Setting down her goblet, which was now empty, she listened to the others who were new. It seemed one of them was also a new caretaker. She shuddered, thinking back to Filch and how she and her mates would play jokes on him. It seemed like the new caretaker was younger and a squib, much like their predecessor. As it was time to go fill their bellies with whatever feast had been prepared for the staff, she give a light greeting to the other three new faces before she excused herself. As she walked along, she found Gabrial keeping pace with her.

"Gryffindor, tis a fine House." She remarked with a proud smile much like a mother talking about her children. "I was sorted there and now I'm happy to be overseeing it." Fianna said as they walked along, a slow, unhurried pace. "I have to wonder which House you might have been sorted into..." She thought aloud, now grinning thoughtfully. A devious idea had now been planted inside of her noggin. It was as if she were a mischievous student again. "Come on!" She grabbed his hand and headed back toward where the Headmaster's office was. "If I'm willin' to bet, you'd be in Gryffindor." She said, now expecting the sorting hat to say something wildly different. "But let's find out." She said as she pulled him along.

The question about what house he would be sorted into did raise a question in his own mind as he tapped his chain I thought. “I don’t know what… what does the process entail? Is it a test or a quiz or a game of spin the bottle?” He questioned playfully. That was until the mischievous smile moved across her face he raised an eyebrow at her.

Upon their sudden hand holding, the snowy haired man was drug in a different direction from the main hall. “But… but food…” His voice was filled with playful disappointment that resembled a child as he was pulled along down the hallway. He just arrived here and now he was off on another adventure. This is very fun. And his grin said just that!

As they hurried down the hallway like two mischievous children breaking the rules they found themselves in the Headmaster’s office and standing in front of an old wizard’s hat. “What is this?” He asked with a chuckle looking down at the thing.

That was until it popped alive. “Are you laughing at me?”

Gabrial jumped back in surprise from the hat, you’d think being a pureblood he’d be used to talking objects but… “A talking hat, that’s new.” He said pointing at the hat. “That’s really cool.” Soon he had the hat in his hand as he looked it over. “I wonder what kind of spell it is, or maybe someone dipped it into a potion. Oh… that could be a thing…” He tilted the hat and looked up inside of it. “You’d have to fully emerge the thing into the potion and give it time to absurd it. I would how long it would take…” His mind began to trail a million miles an hour as he looked over the hat who could only show an expression of annoyance.

Potions really were Gabrial’s life and his excitement showed as he put more and more thought into what it would take to develop a potion that could make someone have a personality and speak. “Getting something to speak is the hard part… that requires bewitching items before putting it into the potion….” It was at that moment he realized he was speaking out loud and shook his head. “I’m sorry.” He said apologizing to the hat before putting it back down then he apologized to her.

“So, if you’re willing to bet, how about it? If I’m sorted into Gryffindor I will do any one thing you say. But if I’m sorted into Slytherin than you will do any one thing I say.” He extended out his hand to her. “Deal?”

Food could easily wait but she had to know which House he may have been placed in. Even though she had been in Gryffindor, she would be happy to be the Head of any House so she didn't necessarily think Gabrail would be sorted in Slytherin but she thought that was another possibility. Maybe even Hufflepuff? While Durmstrang was known for cranking out badass witches and wizards, she didn't know what his core trait was. Was he creative, cunning, loyal or resourceful? Fianna couldn't eat until she figured out the new mystery. Once they reached the gargoyle, she gave the password and they were allowed entry.

Once out of the rotating circular stone staircase, they headed over to where the sorting hat was sitting on the shelf. Looking to Gabrial and then to the sorting hat, she let out a dry chuckle. "Be nice." She playfully chided them both. As the male observed the object, she let out a sigh, her hands now on her hips as he began to hypothesize about how the hat came to be. It didn't take long for him to consider it to be some kind of potion. "Yeah...I hate to tell you this but the founders simply bewitched it." Fianna told him, probably having to burst his potion-fueled bubble.

"If ya were really sorry, you'd buy me a drink." Fianna teased him with a wink.

"Oi, be gentle with the hat, it's old as hell." She added. "As old as this school."

Gabrial then decided to really make things interesting with a bet. "Hmm?" She cocked her head to the side, her hair swishing across her back. "You don't know there are two other Houses." She pointed out with a smirk. "What if you're sorted into one of them?" The woman paused for a moment. "I am willing to bet on Gryffindor and Ravenclaw. And you're on, let's see what you're made of." He was witty and creative, two traits of Ravenclaw that were often overlooked for the more serious Ravenclaws. But a lot of Raveclaws had spirited debates and weren't anti-social at all.

Pressing her lips together took a step back. "I know he's a teacher but I was hoping you could sort him anyway." She told the sorting hat. Fianna had to wonder though, if she lost, what would he ask of her? She already knew what she wanted from him and was crossing her fingers quite openly that she was the victor. Of course if their Headmaster found them in her office, she was sure it would look quite bad for the new blood, Gabrial so she knew they had to hurry back soon.

The hat hummed thoughtfully before grumbling a reply, "I shall."

Once the hat was placed on his head, the man was wrapped into another world in his own mind; during this time he was presented with a series of questions which were answered instantly by his own mind. “You are very resourceful despite your laid back appearance.” The Sorting Hat spoke aloud as he analyzed the man’s inner most mind. “Hm… someone is very clever, very clever indeed. You take pride in your partnerships with friends and would defend them to the very end. You have a drive to defend yourself and others along with the desire in completing things. You remind me of someone I knew very long ago.”

“Slytherin!”

The hat announced his designated house and even Gabrial looked shocked as he lifted the hat off of his head. “You know all of that was supposed to be a secret. I’d rather have people thing I’m lazy, uncaring and stupid. You ruined my whole plan!” His voice was reflected the playfulness that resided in him before he turned to her.

“So, if I’m to understand form what the Sorting Hat showed me, there’s a form of rivalry between the Gryffindor House and the Slytherin House. Is that right?” With that he slowly approached her, like a predator stalking his pray until he had her backed against the bookshelf. His hand went up above her head as he leaned forward and down over her. A smirk moved across his fine lips as his ember eyes stared down, reminding her just how much taller he was compared to her and that… as agreed; she would have to do one thing he said.

“You… Are…. Going… To…” With each word he progressed closer and closer to her. “Go…” Soon he was at her ear and in a deep husky voice he whispered, “Running with me tomorrow morning.” With that he pulled back from her with a victorious grin. “5am sharp meet me at the Quidditch Pitch and run a few laps.”

“Thank you.” He said politely to the Sorting Hat who had fallen back into his slumber. Turning his attention back to her he gestured towards the door. “We better hurry to the Great Hall or else our presence will be noticed as missing.”

The wait was very short lived.

Fuuuuuck.

Fianna cringed. "Skytherin? Jeez, that did not go according to plan. I declare a mistrial." She told the sorting hat with a firm pout of her lip. She couldn't believe he was sorted into Slytherin. She had hoped his new role didn't somehow affect the hat's sorting ability. But she could only accept her fate now, whatever it happened to be. "Well the rivalry has died down over the past few years if I'm honest. People are finally starting to see that not everyone sorted into Slytherin is some crazy killer dark wizard." Fianna replied. As he looked to her and moved closer, she folded her arms across her chest, staring him down, her jaw set.

"So...what do you want?" She asked. Gabrial moved closer and closer, his words coming out of lips rather carefully. She raised a brow as his lips moved to her ears. She had have a mind to smack him upside the head for being so bold. When the words reached her ears, she made a gagging noise. "Noooo no no no no." She whined. Physical labor? What hell had she stepped into? Was she looking into the eyes of the devil himself? Fianna slouched her shoulders and gaped at the other teacher. "Seriously? You couldn't be like every other bloke and ask for a blowjob?"

Running may as well be one of the tasks for the Tri-Wizard Tournament in her personal endless hell.

Fianna lightly fumed as she glanced toward the exit, now suddenly starving now that the brief mystery had been solved. "Yeah yeah yeah." The Irish woman huffed as she headed back out into the main part of the school with the white haired devil. She turned around. "Ya knoooow I just remembered: I don't really have anything to wear running. I guess when I was employed at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, I didn't think to bring jogging pants. Shame. Guess our little date is canceled." She smirked to him, turning around to walk backwards so she could face him as she headed toward The Great Hall, her hands hooking behind her head casually.

“You pain me fair maiden, the idea of asking for sexual fairs in exchange for a simple bet is horrific…. I mean that’s third date marital and we’re not there yet.” His teasing voice echoed through the headmistress’s office. It was almost like being naughty school children sneaking around behind the teacher’s back. In all fairness, she led the way; so ‘she started it’ and boy, he had no intention of letting her live it down either.

The two naughty school kids stood in the headmistress’s office until she slid out from under his arm and he stood back upright with a knowing smile across his face. “Look at you; I got you all nervous by not asking for a sexual favor. That’s a trick I will keep in my back pocket.” His laughter carried through the office as they ventured out of it and towards the Great Hall as to not draw additional attention to their sudden disappearance.

Following instead behind her, she raised an eyebrow as she turned around. “You did not break any clothes to work out in?” His voice showed a tone of disbelief as he slid his hands into the pocket of his robes. A brief pause came between them before a smirk rose across his lips and the ember eyed man shrugged softly. “You can run naked, you’d never hear me complaining.” A cheeky grin moved across his fine lips showing his straight white teeth. “You make it sounds like clothing is a requirement here at Hogwarts…”

“Wait…” Gabrial’s voice stressed a little. “This isn’t Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Nudity?” A long defeated sounding sigh left him. “Are you SERIOUS… what did I sign up for then… Jesus, people can’t be nude but the head of Gryffindor’s house wants to give me a blowjob… this is an odd school indeed.” Laughing softly to remind her that he was truly joking he tilted his head. “So what’s the traits found within the Gryffindor House? Aside from avoiding physical labor at all costs.”

When he suggested her running naked, she gave another roll of her eyes. The boy was asking for a walloping. "Aye and I'm not a morning person either so you may just have to come to my quarters and drag m' naked arse out of bed." Fianna stuck her tongue at him. Of course she would be sure to lock her doors now that she had given him the idea. It was certainly not an invitation by any means. She pressed her lips together as Gabrial then had to consider the school's other, potential name: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Nudity. Fianna let out another laugh, wondering how they got this guy to teach children. Of course she wasn't much better herself, but she decided they have given each other quite enough of ammo to use on another, though maybe he had more than her.

"And hey, I don't want to give ya a blowjob. You're hardly m' type. I just suggested it as an alternative option I'd have to comply with. I am an honorable lady, I'll have ya know." She waved a finger at him before she spun on her heel and went back to walking straight ahead now, her face a tad red and this time it wasn't from drinking. Of course she did know he was joking. He then asked about Gryffindor's traits and she cleared her throat. "You really don't know much about this school, do ya?" She raised a brow, wondering why he wanted Hogwarts to begin with. Most people fawned over it and would do almost anything to get to teach within its famed walls.

"Well Gryffindors are known for their bravery, chivalry and nerve. Hufflepuffs are known for their loyalty, patience and hard work. Ravenclaws are known for their creativity, wit and knowledge. And Slytherins are known for their resourcefulness, cunning and ambition." She told him, assuming he didn't know much about the other Houses. "Even though there was a massive rivalry between our two Houses, they have a lot in common. I tend to think the Houses are a bit arbitrary and most could be sorted into more than one House but who am I to argue with history?" She smirked and shrugged as they finally arrived at The Great Hall. The large wooden double doors were open and inviting as everyone else was at the large head table which overlooked the four other tables.

"Come on." She smacked his arm lightly, wondering if their absence was noted or what rumors may already be floating around now. Her stomach was rumbling and she was ready to fill her gut beyond capacity.

The idea of coming to Hogwarts gave him a wonderful escape from Scandinavia. That and he had some other things that were just… holding him back, so moving to London and starting to teach at a school outside of his home area. He listened closely to her explanation as they walked towards the Great Hall, the snow haired man nodded along with her. “That would make sense. You’re certainly have nerve with the way you talk to people.” He said with a chuckle to his voice as he gave her a gentle nudge with his elbow. He honestly found like he had made a friend on his first day at Hogwarts.

“And I must have ambition to antagonize you more.” He said with a cheeky grin before he followed her into the Great Hall. The hall was buzzing with the chatter of the fellow professors and it wasn’t a surprise that the last seats open were next to each other. After pulling out Fianna’s chair as if it was a natural action, he offered sat down next her with the herbology professor next to him. They instantly started chatting before Minerva made another announcement, a reminder that the house heads needs to be ready with their speeches for their first years when they all arrive at the common rooms.

This was news to Gabrial as his expression changed to one of surprise. “Whelp, guess I’m making a trip to the library after this…” He muttered to himself before the table expanded with food. Delighted like a young child he began to pile things onto his plate. “Wow! Hogwarts is great!” He said with a grin as he spoke to Fianna. “At Durmstrang we hunted for half the week for our meals and the other have was catered by the surrounding town so half was good food the other half was… well it was good but it wasn’t this!” Oh the joy in his face was more than one could describe in words. “Your house elves are amazing! Even my school lacked them. Muggles called what I went through ‘Bootcamp’.”

Gabrail had ambition, without a doubt.

It was ironic that the House he ended up unknowingly becoming the Head of, was also the one he would have been placed in. Perhaps if not irony, destiny? Though Fianna didn't hold much regard for the idea of destiny or fate or anything of the like. Life was not that simple and carefree. The pair made it up to the raised table which oversaw the others and noted they were to sit next to each other. When Gabrail pulled out her chair, she said a quick 'thank you' unsure if he was doing it because he had been taught manners or if he was merely trying to be impressive. He was charming but she had met people who pretended to be charming and she still had to figure out Gabrial's true self. Had his school and upbringing crafted someone truly strong but polite? Or were his actions influenced by other outside measures?

Fianna found for the time being she had no reason to question his sincerity and decided to trust him. Still, he was almost too good to be true. Witty and charming? Usually she had to pick between one trait or the other. So Gabrial was a guy she was already quickly becoming interested in. Sociable as ever, Gabrial was quick to talk to other professors while Fianna filled her goblet with a red red wine and took a long drink before Minerva reminded everyone to prepare their speeches for tomorrow evening. Fianna usually just improvised hers on the spot and never prepared but she could tell Gabrial was a bit taken aback by their new assignment.

Hearing him mutter something about the library, she thought about offering to help him out. It was something she had done twice already and she didn't mind finding another excuse to hang out with him. For now, she worked on putting as much food on her plate as physically possible and began to dig in. "Wow, hunting?" That was certainly impressive, Fianna had to admit. A brief image of Gabrial flashed through her mind with him using some handmade bow and arrow to shoot down deer or ducks. "Just don't try hunting in the Forbbiden Forest." She laughed. "They really worked you guys hard." She commented in between bites.

She topped her goblet up and took another drink. "Say, if ya'd like I could help ya with your speech. Maybe look it over for ya. There's not much to it, most first years are so nervous that they don't pay you much mind the first night away."

Gabrial needed to learn about the Slytherin house and in less than 24 hours. Damn it Minerva! As he munched away on his food eating almost like a starved child… that was until one of the professors shot him a disapproving look and his manners switched. They did a 180 compared to the way he was acting before. He started using manners befitting someone of the upper class with his napkin relocated to his lap, his knife ins his right hand and his fork in his left and instead of clawing into his turkey legs, he cut of the meat like a citizen much higher than what he originally given off but hey, if that’s what it takes to keep the other professors happy than whatever, he could pig out later.

Placing down his knife he filled his goblet with a much needed glass of red wine before taking a long drink. Oh there wasn’t enough alcohol to get through tonight and the poor soul didn’t pack any. Maybe he could but stuff at the nearby town or have some owled to him. If he was going to make it through the school year it was going to require more alcohol than he had. Finishing his drink he placed it back down and went back to cutting his meat.

His ember gaze shot towards Fianna as she spoke. A nod rose and fell in a nod as he listened to her compliment them. A laugh left him after he swallowed, “You’re the first person to feed a compliment to how hard we all actually worked. Thanks!” It wasn’t often the man got complimented, believe it or not so hearing that made him beam and… even blush a bit. But his attention turned back to his food as he attempted to ignore his own blushing and focus on eating.

Her next statement surprised him and his eyes turned back to her. “Oh… well,” He said with a grin, “Sure! Any extra help would be appreciated! How about you meet me in the courtyard in about 20 minutes? I should have something written by then.”

After a while, he finished his food and excused himself. To the library he went, snagging a few books about the Slytherin house and learning from it.

It should come as no surprise that the professor could be found in the court yard with a white cigarette hanging from his mouth but the newest addition was the spectacles off the bridge of his nose. Lucky for him he only needed these for reading but he couldn’t help but feel more sophisticated whenever he had them on. Pressing them further up onto the bridge of his nose he took a drag off of his cigarette and scribbled down more notes from the book he had open in front of him.

Fianna was fascinated by his tenure at Durmstrang and would have liked to probe his mind further but she didn't think proper conversation could be held sitting beside someone as they were feasting. She often liked getting to know someone over drinks and perhaps a good stew or loaf of buttered bread, something rich and hearty. But across from someone, not beside them. Fianna it was a tad difficult to give someone beside you your full attention. She gave the other male a nod as he seemed receptive to the idea of her assisting them though she briefly mused as to whether or not he had considered a different, more intimate meeting place. Of course, had Gabrial gone that direction, she would have shoved his foot firmly in his mouth.

"Alright." She replied as she found herself focusing back on the food and drink on front of her.

Conversation faded as most of the staff finished eating, no longer wishing to multitask. Gabrial eventually excused himself while Fianna helped herself to a third dessert, unable to pick between the bread pudding, the flan or the pecan pie, she decided to just try a bit of everything. When she finished, she retired to her own quarters which weren't connected to her classroom but connected with her office that was settled in one of the many low-leveled corner towers of the castle. She was able to overlook a wide grassy field where most Flying lessons were held. Her office was on the third floor while her quarters were on the second, nestled under her officer.

Fianna took a quick route, stairs hidden behind a portrait of red and gold roses. She busied herself with a letter back home which she would send off in the morning while she still could savor the peace and quiet. Seeing it was nearly time to meet Gabrial, the long haired woman exited her quarters and wandered outside to the main courtyard, following the faint trail of smoke. Reaching Gabrial, she folded her arms across her chest, "You look so serious, so contemplative. I feel I'm almost disturbing you." She commented. Moving closer to him, her head tilted to the side. "Hmm so what have ya got written so far? Care to test your little speech out on me?"

Poor Gabrial was so focused on his writing that he didn’t even hear someone approaching. Between his scribbles he would remove the cigarette from his mouth and blow out some smoke. Soon he was back to writing before finally putting down the quill, and that’s when he heard a voice. Hi ember gaze moved up to see Fianna had found him and a broad smile moved across his fine lips. “Oh to be disturbed by you is never a trouble for me.” A chuckle echoed in his voice as he gestured for her to have a seat at the table with him. “Alright… here it goes.” And with that he began.

“Welcome to the Slytherin House. I’m sure the Prefects have already gone over with you the history of the Slytherin House but I’m going to tell you why you are here. You are here because out of any other option the Sorting Hat knew you had four important qualities. You are ambitious, cunning, resourceful and treasure self-preservation.” He took a drag off of his cigarette and let out the smoke in a smooth fashion as it floated up into the air. “Let’s do a basic run-through of why these are so important and how it sets you apart from the rest.”

“Ambitious means you will always succeed no matter what; why? Because you have the drive to do so no matter what it takes and others do not. To be cunning isn’t a negative thing like people think of it. It’s an Old Norse word meaning knowledge, or knowing and to be cunning means you know how to complete something. Being resourceful means that you learn quickly and are clever when it comes to overcoming difficulties; come on, who here doesn’t fit that description?” He chuckled a little before flicking some ashes onto the ash tray he had brought with him. “Lastly is self-preservation. This means more than it states. This means you will not jump head first into something, in fact you analyze everything and weigh all possible outcomes before making a decision on what should be done. Only those who are close minded see a person who values self-preservation as a negative person. This why Slytherins become leaders, their drive for self-preservations allow them to protect themselves and those around them by planning and executing the plans to insure everyone’s safety.”

Taking a drag off of his cigarette, he held it in for a moment and let out the final puff before finishing. “Slytherins have made a huge impact on the world and no one is bigger than Merlin himself, a Slytherin house graduate whose fame transcends into the muggle world as well. You are Slytherins and here at Hogwarts you will train to become knowledgeable ambitious resourceful leaders to help take the future to greatness. Welcome to the House of Slytherin.”

Letting out a long breathe he finally looked up from his paper and took a drag off of his cigarette and asked, “Whatcha think?”

Once they sat down, Fianna waited as he collected himself. Gabrial soon broke into his prepared speech about what it meant to be a Slytherin and how the new students could transcend what negative stereotypes they might be worried about. Fianna listened as he articulated the traits that brought them to the serpent's house and how they could be positives and could push them toward great futures, while at Hogwarts and upon graduating from its very secure walls. "Hmmm." She gave a light thoughtful hum as she propped her elbow on the cold table and cradled her chin her hand.

While she was sure the youngest generation of incoming witches and wizards needed to be assured that their House wasn't some kind of punishment or daunting predicament, she didn't know if all of them would be receptive to such grand trains of thought. However Fianna also knew the students who were in Slytherin were very capable and likely eager to prove their worth, not just to themselves but to the teachers and classmates around them. While his speech explained how the students could face any challenge and should take pride in their traits, she wondered if he ought to remind them that they are not just defined by those traits but others as well.

Overall, she thought the message was good and she didn't think anything had to be altered. She still believed that he was too concerned about making such a good impression upon the first years. When she was a first year, she didn't remember the speech she had been given. "i think it's fine. You're assuring the students and empowering them. That's all you need to do." Fianna finally spoke up. Still, unlike her, Gabrial didn't have any Hogwarts experiences to call forth. "When I was a first year, everything was so big and scary. Yer away from yer family and tryin' to make friends while keeping up with the classes...it is a lot to ask a simple child. They need to know they can count on you and if they know that, they shouldn't be afraid to fail."

"What was it like for you at Durmstrang when you just started out?" She asked him. While she couldn't apply that directly to Hogwarts since both school demanded different things, she wondered if reflecting upon his own worries might help him tune into those who would be arriving in less than twenty-four hours.

Her question about his time at Durmstrang and his face clenched slightly. “Certainly wasn’t as welcoming as Hogwarts has been.” He began as he took a drag off of his cigarette and leaned back, his face distant as he remembered his time at his own school growing up.

“Durmstrang was about half the size of Hogwarts.” Gabrial began as he blew out the smoke and continued with his reminiscing. “Two houses much like here but more intense. The definitions were Strength or Knowledge. The strength house was represented by an ox and knowledge was represented by an owl. Clever weren’t they?” A chuckle left his fine lips as he pushed the spectacles further up onto his nose and ran his friend through his hair. “There was a third house not many got into and that was the house of the dragon. Those who end up in the house of the dragon show signs of intelligence and cunning bravery. Out of the massive amount of students who enter Durmstrang since it opened, less than a hundred entered that house… and you’re looking at one of them.”

A smirk moved across his face as he took a drag from his cigarette. “I was the only one though.” The statement was followed by him blowing out the smoke before he sighed. “Things were relatively lonely as most students retired for the evening before I was ready for bed so I spent a lot of my evenings alone. Maybe that’s what made me take up working out, something to get my mind off of everything. However, when it came to time to activities I was rotated between both houses. I was an excellent hunter and an exceptional potions master, between the bow and the cauldron I was an asset each house needed. But it meant double the work for me. They pushed me really hard by expecting me to excel in both, and that was probably a good thing as I feel I have a balance of both strength and brains that my cohort did not have. However it took its toll and was one of the reasons why I moved away and chose not to teach there.”

A shrug rose and fell his shoulders before he chuckled softly. “Sorry… I didn’t expect to ramble on like that. To put it simply, it wasn’t great and I wasn’t excited about it but it worked out in the end. And that’s not what I want to tell the kids on their first day.”

It was interesting to hear more about how a student spent their time at Durmstrang and why a place like Hogwarts would interest him, as they were clearly very different in regards to rules, expectations and overall treatment. Fianna had no doubt that students who left the Durmstrang Institute were tough and ready to tackle the world but she hoped there had been room for some fun and playfulness. Fianna was sure she wouldn't last a week in Durmstrang. It sounded like Durmstrang liked to view the world in black and white which wasn't really fair but she knew she couldn't exactly judge a school by one former student's account. "I was hoping your life at Durmstrang would be applied somehow to teaching here but that doesn't look like the case." She frowned slightly.

Still, it was worth a shot in asking and she was glad to know more about Gabrial.

"Sounds like an intense place to be, but you seem to have made it out alive." She smirked slightly. "But I bet you'll do great here and the students will appreciate your encouragement and your different experience growing up in another school." She told him. It sounded like Gabrial wanted to be a better role model than the ones he may have had growing up which was a noble idea. Slytherin kids weren't often picked on anymore but she was sure if any were, Gabrial would be able to handle the situation. "All in all, ya didn't even need my help." She teased him as she eased herself up from the table, patting it with her palm.

"You've got nothin' to worry about." She assured him. "You turnin' in for the night?" She asked him. Fianna intended to head over to Hogsmeade in the afternoon and do some shopping prior to the students' arrival. She had to wonder if Gabrial had ever been down there but it was likely that he hadn't. Fianna was glad to start a new term, enjoying the students and their insights immensely. If some seventh years did well, she didn't mind inviting them round for a drink or two to celebrate a hard-earned mark or other accomplishment. Getting along with the students was what made the work worth it. The new generation of witches and wizards was vital to everyone's survival.
