Pylia cracked a small smile. “Family huh. I’ve... I wouldn’t really know about that I guess. My father died before I was born. My mother died shortly after I was born. I was raised by nuns in a temple of the Maker, not this one, but... I learned quickly that the world asks for much and gives very little in return. Haven’t you noticed? As soon as you arrived to Cassari, I bet Ricks gave you work to do before you could even take a seat. Always asking, always taking. Sure, they’ll pay you, maybe, but even so they’d be taking advantage of your kindness first. Seeing how much they can squeeze from you.”

She hugged her legs close to her chest. “I hated that. I wanted to change it. When I lived here I almost did. Then... Then those Maker fool’s came back, and undid everything. Started preaching that cal about charity and good works for the community. Honied words to just make the dumb and foolish break their backs and dirty their hands on their behalf.” Curling her toes in the sand Pylia looked back into the skies with a forlorn look.

“And just like that the town was against me. Sure I had a few friends, but they were outnumbered by those who were against me. I knew if I stayed in town people would get hurt. I didn’t want that... So I left. Thought and schemed about how I would get revenge. Get rid of the church, the duke, all those lazy and corrupt rich folk. But I...” Pylia sighed heavily as she slumped against your shoulder.

“I’ve spent so long stewing in my own madness, I don’t even know what I want anymore. I think... I just wanted company the most. And I did anything to justify having it.”

Sylvia sat down next to Pylia and she listened to what she had to say. She didn't move and let Pylia slump against her shoulder. Sylvia nodded in agreement about the madness, and she commented, "Loneliness can be maddening. Not only that, but it's also pretty scary how easily misunderstandings can come about, with or without loneliness,"

She then told Pylia, "Last night at Ricks', he was willing to just let me pay two silver for the night and let me be on the way. He only offered me a job because he noticed that I was looking at the job board out of curiosity," She then smiled a bit and she informed her friend, "Pylia, do you know how much they offered for catching Dirk? 100 gold pieces. Not only that, but everyone in the village gave me various rewards for catching him. Including having Room 5 in Ricks' Inn as my room permanently," She then chuckled and commented "I don't know about you, but I think that's pretty generous of them, especially since I'm a stranger who only arrived in Cassari last night. It feels like I'm the one who's taking advantage of them,"

She then told Pylia, looking at the sky again, "My family...My grandparents often told me that there are more good people than there are bad people in the world, even if it doesn't seem like it. I would like to believe that it's the same for this world, even if it doesn't seem like it to you,"

Once more Pylia was quiet and only the ocean waves broke up the silence. Her flame was gone now, replaced my cold empty hands. “It’s hard to see the good things like that. To be so blinded by the bright side, you end up never noticing the things that lurk in the shadows. That’s why I followed the Defiance. As much as I hate how things have become I... I know I have to do this. To live in blissful ignorance... That’s not something I can do. To see wrongs happening and standing idly by, that is not my way.”

She looked over to you with a tired look in her eye. “That is why I still want to help you Sylvia, even if... Even if you’re only here because of me. I just hope you can... Forgive me. You may do so now but believe me, there will come a time in your future you will not. And if you choose not to forgive me then I... I’d understand.”

Sylvia looked to Pylia as she spoke again, and after she finished, Sylvia nodded and told her once she finished, "We don't know what the future holds. But right now, I do forgive you. And that's not going to change," She then suggested as she stood up, "I think the both of us need to rest for tonight. I've had a pretty busy day, and you look tired, Pylia. You ready to head back to Ricks' Inn?"

Pylia quietly nodded and would stand up, walking with you back at Ricks' inn. Though it was loud and bustling no one would bother you as you head to your room. Pylia was quick to enter and sit at the foot of your bed, closing her eyes to be deep in thought. Cleaning her face she cleared her throat and spoke quietly. "Ah... There's only one bed. I have a bedroll, so I'll just take the floor." Indeed, the bed was rather small and more of a cot than a bed. It would be awkward to fit two people onto it.

Sylvia was glad that no one bothered the both of them as they headed up to her room. She let out a quiet sigh of relief, as soon as the door was closed. She turned her attention to Pylia, and at the mention of the bed being too small for them, she looked at it and realized that Pylia was right.

After a moment of thought, Sylvia answered Pylia, "Don't worry about it, Pylia. Take the bed for tonight. I need to test the bedroll I found in the cave anyways. See if it's fit for the journey ahead or if I need to get a new bedroll before we head out," She then fished through her the backpack and pulled out the bedroll. She whispered a prayer, "Please don't let there be any bugs, please don't let there be any bugs..."

Sylvia then unfurled the fur bedroll she found in the cave and on the floor.

As you rolled out the bedroll, you would be horrified to see that your hopes were going to be dashed. At first everything looked okay, and then suddenly a huge swarm of insects scuttling about and moving towards you and Pylia. She screamed as she jumped onto the top of the bed.

In a panic Pylia aimed her hand towards the swarm of insects, chanting rapidly in her strange divine language. ^Bolt of Divine Retribution! Bolt of Divine Retribution! BOLT OF DIVINE RETRIBUTION!^ Pylia blasted apart a sizable chunk of the swarm with her magic attacks, however there was still enough of the insects to swarm towards you as they came to crawl all over you. Fortunately, perhaps due to superior agility, your own flailing, or just dumb luck, they don't manage to do any notable harm or even get on you.

Pylia was not the only one who screamed at the sight of the bugs. Sylvia also screamed at the sight, and she started moving back and switching between feet, trying to avoid the bugs. She couldn't help but scream out loud

"THAT BEDROLL WAS A MISTAKE! I REGRET EVERYTHING! KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!"

As she screamed in a panic, she swung her quarterstaff at the bugs and stomped on them, trying to get rid of as many bugs as possible.

The two girls would continue to scream and shout as they killed the bugs. Pylia unleashed radiant flames while you crushed anything underneath your feet. Soon all the insects were either dead or scattered, killing off the swarm. Pylia proceeded to then take your bedroll, light it on fire, and toss it outside of the window. Breathing heavily Pylia just looked at you with an annoyed look. That then just turned into a dumb smile before she collapsed onto the bed, not even bothering to take off her leather armor. "Oooooh gods. That... Uuuuugh. I don't wanna deal with it."

Sylvia didn't stop until all of the bugs were dead. Afterwards, she was left panting, and was looking at Pylia. She was soon laughing as Pylia smiled. She couldn't help it. She commented as she laughed, "Oh my god...At least I didn't open that thing out in the wilderness where the undead could've heard us! Oh my god...! And I thought the bugs back home were bad!"

She soon finished laughing and she sighed. She then realized "I need to clean up the floor...."

She then looked around, trying to see what she could use to clean up the bug guts.

Pylia laid there as she watched you clean up around the room. There was a small bit of cloth you could take from the bed, apparently it was suppose to be a wash cloth, which you could use to wipe up the insect parts. Pylia herself didn't do much to assist except to take off her armor and toss it off to the side, along with most of her outer clothes and gear. She did at least use her magic to zap any insects that did were still in the room, though that was mostly flies and other annoying critters. It was almost comical seeing her mutter magic words as bugs spontaneously burst into flames in midair.

Eventually you'd finish cleaning up. Pylia would offer you the bed again, insisting that she doesn't even like sleeping on these sorts of beds. She's more of a hammock person. Besides that her own sleeping bag was certainly free of bugs, though she did double check and ensured it was indeed insect free. "This would make the most comfort for the both of us. I mean honestly, you'd think Ricks could at least give you more sheets to wrap up the straw in."

Sylvia got to work in cleaning up the bug parts, and as she did, she couldn't help but notice Pylia just zapping the bugs out of the air. She somewhat wished people back home could do that. She shook her head and chuckled. At the offer of the bed, Sylvia answered, accepting the bed, "I might as well...I don't really have another bedroll I could try and use,"

At the mention of the sheets, Sylvia shrugged and commented "I'm sure he got as many sheets as he could for the inn. The lack of sea trade in Cassari probably makes the task much more difficult than it sounds,"

Now that she thought about it...

"Hey, Pylia...Think everyone downstairs or in the nearby rooms heard us?"

It was still rather loud and rowdy outside, and frankly now that Pylia remembered it she groaned. "Doubtful. Seems like they've got their own noise to make." She just sighed as she laid out the bedroll next to your bed. "Ugh... This is why I don't like sleeping at inns. Too loud..." As she laid down Pylia covered herself with the furs and curled up, as if trying to block out the noise. "Frankly, those people likely wouldn't have never bothered to come up if things were looking really bad. They've got their own world to deal with, completely separate from ours." Her voice started to sound drowsy. For someone who seemed annoyed at the noise, she was quickly falling asleep. "Could throw a whole hive of wasp at them... Wouldn't even bother to clear out until someone's red in the face... Pus bleeding, drunken reprobates... Zzzz...."

Sylvia let out a sigh of relief instead. At least they didn't bother anyone who may have been sleeping up here...or so Sylvia thought. She could be wrong.

As Pylia answered and rolled out her bed, Sylvia took her place on the bed. She watched and listened as Pylia muttered thoughts of throwing a hive of wasps at someone. It wasn't long until Pylia was asleep, and Sylvia herself lied down and stared at the ceiling in thought. She couldn't help but mull over the day.

There were a lot of good people in Cassari...
What she learned in the library...
The black dragon was real, and it was out and about...
Dirk and Pylia...They both went through so much...

....She's not able to go home....

She couldn't help but whisper quietly, "...Gran, Grampa...I'm so sorry..." as she closed her eyes, hoping to get some sleep for the night.

The night was, fortunately, uneventful. Not even a strange dream, though you have vague memories of something about fish. Either way morning would soon come. You could hear the chirping of birds and the crowing of a distant rooster. Pylia was still asleep on her bedroll nearby. It was still somewhat dark as well, so likely shortly before sunrise. You could get up now, or just steal a few more minutes of sleep.

Sylvia yawned quietly as she woke up to the darkness of early morning. She was glad that the sleep was uneventful, but what was this vague memory of fish...?

Eh, maybe she ate too much fish yesterday...

Considering it was still dark and Pylia was still asleep, plus Sylvia was still pretty sleepy, she decided to steal a few more minutes of sleep. Just like it was another weekend while she was away at college...The extra sleep might do her some good.

You lay your head back down to sleep, and it’s not hard for you to doze off again. You dream of floating through a sea of clouds on the back of a giant fried fish on toast, almost like the one Dirk ate yesterday. But soon it felt like you were falling, and you suddenly jump awake just as you were about to fall through the clouds. Or so you thought. What felt like only a few seconds apparently was actually quite a bit of time, as there’s now some sunlight shining through. If you had to guess maybe about an hour had passed. It was still quiet but the sun was getting up now.

Pylia was still asleep on the floor, bundled into a ball of fur and magic. You could almost hear the heavy snoring if other patrons beyond the wall of your room. Occasionally one would let out a deep bellowing snore powerful enough to shake your door. Additionally as strange as your fried fish dream was, if you choose to lay back down you’d find it hard to go back to sleep. Seemed that the shock had awake your body now.

Sylvia found herself sitting straight up from the weird dream and the shock of the loud snore from another room. She couldn't help but mutter quietly to herself, "What...was that?" She blinked rapidly and she thought to herself as she rested a hand on her head, "No fried fish on toast for me..."

She then decided to quietly leave the room, so as to not wake Pylia. There was no way she was going to get anymore sleep right now. So, she might as well go down and get some breakfast. Maybe something without fish...

The old lady was in the kitchen again making some sort of soup. From the smell it seemed to be beef, or just some sort of red meat. You could see a nice, tasty chunk of steak on the cutting board that's to be chopped up for the stew. She nods at you and serves you up a bowl of a very hearty stew and a warm loaf of bread, as well as a mug of boiled water. Compared to yesterday this meal was much more luxurious. No one seemed to be here yet though much of the tables were still dirty and stained from last night revelry. You could eat here, or try and find somewhere else to have breakfast.
