Oh, it was over from the start.
Barre was born to a scientist that had sunk years of research and dedication into supporting Operation Tartarus and The Hunters, a woman who sought (like many others) to establish a clear advantage over the Gifted, particularly those troubling pockets of insurgency. Frustrated that Hunter technology was constantly needing to be overhauled or scrapped in order to keep up with the varied and powerful Gifted that would often rear their head in defiance of the world order, this woman came to the conclusion that there would be no winning this fight without incorporating more Gifted into the ranks of The Hunters.
So she set out to make her crowning contribution to the effort.
Through deeply unethical means, Barre’s mother brought three children into the world with the hopes of them carrying Gifts similar to those of their fathers, who all resided in prison camps at the time and since been promptly disposed of. She succeeded with two of these children and sent the giftless third someplace where she wouldn’t have to waste her time on it.
Barre’s power became evident just before puberty, and it developed slowly but surely. There was a time in their life when they could hardly heal a skinned knee without having to sport the wound themself, but practice and maturation helped grow Barre’s ‘capacity’, so to speak; each year they were able to do more and more good for others before their body began to break. Once they were older (old enough, anyway), Barre was routinely brought by their mother to assist with research efforts with the unspoken agreement made by all that this child was simply another tool of the trade. Their first task in the name of Operation Tartarus was to provide round-the-clock healing to Gifted being held for testing and examination. Data collection gets to soar to an all time high when you don’t need to put your tests on hold while a subject recovers from their injuries. In this way, their work allowed for breakthroughs in Hunter weaponry at the low, low price of carrying the pain of each of those Gifted prisoners, and knowing that there would be more to come.
Eventually, Barre was pulled from their unofficial gig with research & development and properly integrated into The Hunters. Around this time, too, they underwent several operations intended to improve their pain threshold via medications and implants, and many in-depth examinations designed to fully explore the extent of their power (whether they can treat illnesses, whether they can heal body parts that they don’t personally possess, and so on). Training went abysmally, but through it Barre was able to hone the art of quietly, seamlessly slipping into autopilot. With the help of everything the doctors had provided to help them carry the weight of their healing a little easier, it became as effortless as breathing to simply go away for a while and let all their fear and discomfort fade to static.
In recent times, Barre’s role has shifted more to looking after others on the force and providing near-immediate emergency care for other Hunters (they’re not great when it comes to the ‘kicking down doors’ bit, but there is always a benefit to dragging around a tactically-trained supermedic in this day and age), though they are still regularly called upon to assist with testing and examination in the same capacity as before.

- PAIN TOLERANCE — It’s what they’re built for. Barre can endure an obscene amount of damage before falling out.
- SURVIVOR — It’s an uphill battle, but it’s the only one Barre’s good at. No matter how undignified it may be, Barre will consistently do what needs to be done to assure their own safety and survival; even if that means flouting previously-sworn-by convictions. Hypocrisy is a small price to pay for a pulse.
- SUPPORT MAIN — Barre knows how to play to their strengths, and their crowning forte is not leading the charge. This is your first-aid kit, your Nurse Nightingale. This is the person you want tending to the wounded, managing inventory, and passing out juice boxes. All that unglamorous housekeeping shit is their bread and butter.

- MEDIOCRE COMBATANT — You can cover Barre in whatever kind of armor you like, stick the fanciest weapons in their hands, and they’ll try their best...but their best is nothing special. They aren’t so bad as to be an active hindrance, but they’re damned lucky that they aren’t being kept around for their combat proficiency.
- SQUISHY — Exacerbated by the above point. Barre isn’t impervious to damage (no bullet-proof skin, no innate shielding quality, nothing), just preternaturally good at handling it once it’s happened. If an Alpha-class Gifted really wanted to squish them like a bug, it could all be over in seconds.
- BRAIN FOG — To put it mildly. Barre has coped with their circumstances by being out of touch for so long that it’s difficult for them to know how to react when something outside of the usual occurs. They’re extremely good at their routine and can be relied upon to perform their li’l duties so long as it’s all the same stuff they’ve been doing for years, but if you knock them off script or pull them out of their element, expect a lot of vacant staring and hand-wringing.
- PAIN TOLERANCE — One of the most impressive things that Barre has going for them is also one of the most risky. Just because you no longer process the pain of an injury doesn’t mean that you’re not injured, and Barre has reached a point where they can no longer accurately gauge what their own breaking point is until it’s happened. While they’re lucky enough to be innately built to cope with a high degree of damage, they aren’t invulnerable, and it is getting harder and harder for them to remember that.

Alriiiiigggghhhtttt here's a finally updated version! Changed the codename to suit her power a little more, also because I didn't want there to be any confusion between "Blackstar" and "Blackweb" lol. I changed up the history just a touch to reflect the changes to powers, and I made a note about her being in contact with the Rebel Army -- I was thinking she can be part of the outside forces involved in the jailbreak? Alaine stands at an average height of 5'6 and weighs something around 165 lbs. She's on the curvier side but tends to stay in shape for the most part, partially because she rarely has time to sit around idle. Her eyes are a pale grey-blue that can appear darker or lighter in different settings, with light brown/dark blonde hair that falls somewhere past her shoulders and is often pulled back in a half-up, half-down style. She has fair skin with a fair smattering of little scars from various incidents, both from her childhood and more recent years, none of which are overly prominent. She has a beauty mark just outside of her left eye, and a few random, dark freckles across her body. Generally she wears dull colors and simple clothes -- jeans, t-shirts, flannels, old jackets, worn cowboy boots. She loves a nice comfy sweater, but hasn't had the luxury of finding a nice snuggly one in a couple of years. Alaine is overall a kind, friendly, hardworking individual. She's naturally quiet and more of a loner, but in a group she does her best to make everyone feel comfortable and keep things running smoothly, if it's needed -- otherwise she tends to fade into the background and observe. Despite these quiet tendencies, she's more than capable of sticking up for herself. She's earned a reputation in certain circles as being tough, independent, and a bit of a vigilante, never one to back down from a fight when someone's honor or safety is on the line. She's fiercely loyal but has a hard time making good friends because she's had her loyalty taken advantage of before, and blames herself for several incidents that led her to believe she was better off on her own. Even though she tells herself that often, she still feels very lonely at times and wouldn't mind someone to be close to.

Abilities and Skills
dark energy blades;; The ability to manifest "blades" made of some kind of dark energy is an ability Alaine has had since she was a child, although her blades were only a foot or less long until she was about twenty. She believes this power was influenced by her mother's genes, as her mother was a telekinetic of the psionic variety, known to produce and throw energy blasts from her hands. With concentration, Alaine is able to create two "blades" of energy around her hands and lower arms that, so far, can reach two feet from the center of her palm. They appear as triangular fields of dark energy that have a negative appearance and create an inverted/negative effect on her hands, arms, and anything that goes within the field of the blade. When used to cut or stab, these energy blades act much like a Star Wars lightsaber -- when interacting with organic matter they can cause heavy burns and tend to cauterize wounds, sealing in the damage so that the victim is more likely to bleed and burn internally than bleed out. She has been able to sever limbs thus far, as well as cut through many non-living materials (metal, wood, etc.).
Alaine is unaware of the full potential and limits of this power, having only started to put it to use during the past eight years. The strength and endurance of these energy blades depends on her mental state, as far as she can tell. While she can manifest them without a strong emotional feeling, they seem to last longer and become stronger when backed with a high level of emotion and/or adrenaline -- rage and desperation, most significantly. How easily she's able to cut through things is determined by similar means. She's not able to penetrate every obstacle, and depending on the thickness or material of an object it might take several strikes to cut through if she's able to damage it at all. So far, various metals have proved the least effected by her energy blades and take the most effort to damage. If Alaine is tired or unfocused enough, she can't effectively manifest or maintain her blades.
notes;; Alaine has a more receptive mind when it comes to the telepathic or psychic abilities of others. Her mother taught her from a young age how to open or block her mind to psychic advances, and she often has a mental wall up that renders casual mind-reading unsuccessful (not so much more focused/powerful efforts to access her mind). She lacks the ability to initiate telepathic connections herself, although she's easy to maintain a mental connection with when she's not blocking it. Thanks to her mother's teaching, she's generally aware of when someone is trying to access her mind.

Alaine is unaware of the full potential and limits of this power, having only started to put it to use during the past eight years. The strength and endurance of these energy blades depends on her mental state, as far as she can tell. While she can manifest them without a strong emotional feeling, they seem to last longer and become stronger when backed with a high level of emotion and/or adrenaline -- rage and desperation, most significantly. How easily she's able to cut through things is determined by similar means. She's not able to penetrate every obstacle, and depending on the thickness or material of an object it might take several strikes to cut through if she's able to damage it at all. So far, various metals have proved the least effected by her energy blades and take the most effort to damage. If Alaine is tired or unfocused enough, she can't effectively manifest or maintain her blades.
notes;; Alaine has a more receptive mind when it comes to the telepathic or psychic abilities of others. Her mother taught her from a young age how to open or block her mind to psychic advances, and she often has a mental wall up that renders casual mind-reading unsuccessful (not so much more focused/powerful efforts to access her mind). She lacks the ability to initiate telepathic connections herself, although she's easy to maintain a mental connection with when she's not blocking it. Thanks to her mother's teaching, she's generally aware of when someone is trying to access her mind.

Alaine was born the oldest of six children to a humble family in Alabama, in the USA. Her parents were both Gifted, but they'd settled far enough in a rural area that they were largely out of the public eye. They chose to homeschool their six children to further protect them from unwanted discrimination and reporting, which overall worked out well until Alaine was about seventeen. Several of her siblings had begun manifesting powers while others were too young or seemed to simply carry the Gifted genes and not show any powers, and even in their rural surroundings it was hard to keep a Gifted family of eight from being noticed.
When Alaine was seventeen the government came knocking on the Barrows' door, demanding they turn themselves in for monitoring and observation in a controlled facility. Her parents, Roger and Laverne Barrows, refused to cooperate and attempted to fend off government-sent Hunters while allowing their children to escape.
They were unsuccessful.
Alaine, tasked with getting her siblings to safety, was forced to watch her parents be killed before her own attempts at protecting her young siblings were foiled, and the six Barrows children were brought under government supervision. Separated and "monitored" for three years, all but Alaine resisted to the point of death... or at least so she was told. Although enduring torturous experimentation herself, upon hearing her siblings were dead she flew into a rage, displaying a level of power she'd previously never used. Finding herself able to manifest two-foot, volatile energy blades in her extreme anger and pain, Alaine successfully broke free of her restraints, killing and injuring anyone who stood in her way. Her attempts to locate her siblings within the facility where she was housed proved fruitless, and she's since come to believe they really are dead.
Since her escape, she's been roaming on her own and traveling from one place to another, rarely staying for more than a few months and always in hiding. There was a year after her escape where she sought out and broke into government facilities in search of her siblings, but now she tends to avoid conflict where possible and focuses on helping other Gifted she comes in contact with. She's heard of the Rebel Army but isn't sure what to make of it, hesitant to join without being certain of their goals and motives.
While she doesn't actively seek them out, she's always on the watch for the Gifted Hunter that murdered her parents and had herself and her siblings captured. She's vowed to kill them if she ever finds them again.
Currently she's been visiting with the Gifted Rebel Army, and has made plans to help them stage a "jailbreak" of sorts at a large prison camp for Gifted.

I was planning on Alaine helping with the "jailbreak" -- I'm going to go back over all the OOC chatter and such here in a bit, but just in case someone can give me a summary lol, were there any plans for how that (the jailbreak) was going to work?? Or was it just a freestyle kind of thing haha?
Also, in case it matters, I personally don't have/use Discord! I can't speak for everyone but I'm fine staying here on RPG :>
