After finishing a great conversation with HR on the phone, it hits you: something big has happened! You were talking to and have accepted a superhero job with the Lafayette City branch of the League of Good, and have just confirmed your first day of work. Soon, you will help defend the city - and maybe the world - from the threats of various evildoers, from common thieves to conniving supervillains.

This is a big step in your life. In addition to getting paid to help people, you will have no-cost health insurance, a pension plan, and so on. The League is run by heroes, so they understand that a job requiring as much sacrifice as this should have some benefits as well. Basically, if you do your work honestly, the League is prepared to take care of you. You will be expected to do your work well also, but that is implied; after all, the League does not hire newbies for their positions. Only people with proven abilities and strength are accepted into the League, for the safety of their coworkers and the safety of the people they protect.

You know this won’t always be smooth sailing. You could even die. But you have a chance to make the world a better place, and it’s one you’ll be taking.

-----

So, the gist of the plot is that your PCs (player characters, not computers :P) will be superheroes who have just joined the Lafayette City branch of the League of Good, a global organization dedicated to fighting crime. You will go on various missions, such as fighting villains, in order to keep the city safe. Whether you are from this Midwestern city or are just moving here, you will be part of a team (all the PCs) that will be fighting crime. The motivation can vary; wanting to do good, job security, etc. - this could be something to explore for your character, if you’d like.

The thing that might be different about this versus other RPs is my idea that we could take turns creating villains for the team to fight - a rotating GM sort of thing. I might create a larger plot within these battles, but I have nothing in mind yet beyond the initial battle, so input from my fellow writers would be cool. I figure this would be a cool way to create some fun fights, and if people end up having to leave the RP it won't derail it entirely. I will GM the RP as a whole, but when specific villain battles occur, the person who conceptualized that evildoer will GM that fight in coordination with myself. They would be in control of the bad guy and their hero character; in advance of the battle, I would coordinate with them on ideas they had for the fight and so on. If you’re interested in GMing a villain, please PM me and we can discuss it. Or if you have ideas for a larger story piece beyond a single battle, I’d be glad to discuss that also. I don’t have a formal “application” process in mind for this beyond discussing it

I imagined Lafayette City as a Midwestern US city to give some identity to it, but I’ve kept the setting somewhat loose so far so that people can add their ideas as needed - please share any thoughts you may have! Collaboration makes the process more fun.

Additionally, in order to provide a fun writing environment, some rules are below. They’re mainly common sense, though I doubt it’ll hurt to have them around:

1) Usual RP writing rules apply. Don't control other characters without permission, don't be a jerk, use proper spelling and grammar, etc.

2) I reserve the right to refuse entry and kick out anyone from this RP for any reason. Of course, I don't want to do this just for laughs, I just want to be able to ensure a great experience for everyone.

3) If you have an issue with another player or me, please talk it out with them privately or PM me about it. Nobody likes being publicly called out. In my case, I am human and will make mistakes, so communicate with me when that happens.

4) Post length should vary depending on what is needed; both long and short posts have their place, but two to three quality paragraphs per post is a good minimum to expect.

5) You should be prepared to post once or twice a week. I'll make a post and give it a deadline, usually a week from that post. If the writers want, we can increase the pace, but I think that's a good starting point. Or if everyone posts before the deadline, I can push the new deadline up a bit.

6) If you can't post for a period of time or are no longer interested in the roleplay, let me know please. It's easier to know and work around it than to wonder what is going on.

7) One hero per writer please.

Character Sheet:

Please use the CS below to make your character. I’m open to many different types of superpowers for the PCs also. I'd say somewhere "middle of the road" in terms of "power level" is appropriate - strong enough to let people do what they want creatively, not so strong that there aren't stakes entirely, yet not so weak they get overpowered entirely. These should be heroes that are accepted into a crimefighting organization, after all!

If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to writing with you!

Interested, assuming you still have space? Was wondering on any thoughts about a support role for a superhero. I mean, I'm guessing the idea is a good old comic slapfight story, but I had this idea for a support role on the team with a superhero who'd be less out in the field and more communications? Keeping comms, planning, parsing data, etc. Of course they'd sometimes go out and help the team in the field, but that'd only be if remote communication is either impossible or they need them for immediate data parsing. Their power is essentially eidetic memory, perfect retention of information. Which wouldn't really make them useful for fighting on the front line anyway. :P

Well, I didn't realize that I forgot to exclude my note to self from the OOC post until now, so if anyone saw that please don't spoil it for everyone else! I really feel sheepish now, I apologize for the spoilers, and if you saw them I hope this is still a fun experience for you all the same.

@Byte there is space! A support role is a good idea, but given the nature of the fights will likely be geared towards combat in some way given the shared GM aspect of the story, I don't think the "guy in the chair" type character would be a good fit. You just wouldn't have enough to do to make it a fun experience. That said, eidetic memory and parsing data could still work, if paired with skills that might be more suitable for a role grouped with everyone else, even if your PC isn't the one throwing all the punches. I can't think of anything relevant right now, but if you'd like to brainstorm, feel free to post here or send a PM.

My potential PC will probably be more of a support character, or perhaps a hybrid of a support and front liner, so it is definitely possible!

Name: Julian Mercer
Alias: Spotlight
Age: 26
Gender: Male (He/Him)
Family: Mother: Vanessa St. Clair – daytime TV host, lifestyle influencer
Father: Darius Mercer – Lighting technician for TV and film productions

Appearance: Julian is strikingly handsome in a boy-next-door-meets-Hollywood-heartthrob kind of way. He stands at an even 6’0”, with a lean, athletic build honed more for aesthetics and agility than brute strength. His golden blond hair falls in lightly tousled waves, always somehow perfectly messy. His eyes are bright, ocean-blue, framed by long lashes and a dazzling smile that could probably get him out of a parking ticket. He keeps his skin glowing, sometimes literally, thanks to a meticulous skincare routine and his powers.

When not in costume, Julian leans into a soft luxury, with stylish trenchcoats, fitted tees, fitted jeans, trendy sneakers, and layered gold jewelry. You’ll usually catch him wearing light-reflective sunglasses, a perfectly curated outfit, and carrying his phone like it’s another limb (he is constantly updating his socials, after all).

His hero costume is sleek and futuristic: a white body suit with metallic gold panels. There are glowing accents that pulse with light as he uses his powers. His chest emblem is a stylized sunburst. He also wears a white cape for the drama.

Superpower: Photokinesis: Julian can generate, control, and shape light energy. He can emit brilliant bursts of light, create solid light constructs (like shields or platforms), form dazzling illusions by bending light, or blind foes with solar flare-like flashes. He can also glow softly or radiantly, controlling his brightness at will.

His powers burn stamina; overuse can leave him exhausted or faint. He has no power in total darkness or areas that absorb light

Skills: Media Training: Naturally photogenic and skilled at public speaking, interviews, and brand management.

Dancer’s Grace: Trained in basic choreography, allowing for stylish combat flourishes and stunning landings.

Social Media Expertise: Keeps his fanbase engaged and can spin PR disasters with a well-timed post.

Makeup & Style: Being hot is a skill, and Julian always looks good. He can do stage makeup in under five minutes, and he will make you try a filter.

Equipment: Spotlight Drone: A floating camera drone that captures his good side and streams it live.

A communicator: Standard protocol to communicate with team members.

Personality: He’s charming, expressive, and unapologetically extra. He leans into the glamorous side of hero work with genuine enthusiasm. He believes that heroism and theatricality can go hand in hand. After all, a well-timed dramatic pose can inspire the world. He flirts like it’s breathing, hypes his teammates constantly, and somehow makes even disasters sound like PR wins.

He can be a little vain, and maybe a touch addicted to the praise… but it’s part of the package. Behind the bravado, he’s sincere, vulnerable, and deeply driven to make people feel safe and inspired. Whether he’s hyping up his teammates or comforting a scared civilian, Julian brings warmth wherever he goes. He also hides a vulnerable side. The fear that without all the sparkle, he’s nothing special. That fear drives him harder than he’d like to admit.

Biography: Julian’s powers first emerged when he was 8 years old. He started glowing while sobbing during a sad scene in a movie he was watching. What others saw as a strange mutation, Julian’s mother saw as a brand opportunity. Vanessa St. Clair, a popular talk show host and media personality, immediately leaned into the photogenic glow. Her son wasn’t just gifted, he was marketable.

From then on, Julian’s life was scheduled around press opportunities, curated appearances, and perfectly framed social media moments. Vanessa documented everything. First glow, first controlled burst, first viral moment. She wasn’t malicious, just so consumed by the dream of fame that she couldn’t see her son as anything else. Julian’s father, Darius, quietly disapproved, but years in the entertainment industry had taught him that objections often went unheard. Vanessa didn’t listen. Her son was going to be a star, whether he liked it or not.

Julian tried to make the best of it. He liked the attention, the applause, the way people lit up when they saw him. But part of him always wondered if they’d still love him when he wasn’t shining.

In college, Julian took back some control. With no official costume and no team, he began doing small acts of heroism. Including rescuing people from fires, defusing fights, helping in disaster zones, and uploading short clips online. His kindness, stage presence, and thirst-trap charm quickly won over the public. One especially dramatic rooftop rescue went viral, and the nickname “Spotlight” was born.

He embraced it.

Now, joining the Lafayette City branch of the League of Good feels like the perfect next step. Julian hopes to prove he’s more than a pretty face or a viral moment. He wants to show the world that doing good can still look good

Relationships: (Optional, discuss this with other players!)

Extra: Insta handle: @spotlight.julian
Has a merch line. It includes scented candles, limited edition sunglasses, designer phone cases, and a custom Labubu
Has more followers than the League’s official account. They pretend they’re not annoyed.
His shirtless selfies always go viral.

Spotlight isn't dissimilar in backstory to my loose idea. My idea was a sponsored, corporate teenage hero who's dad got busted for crimes and she now feels disillusioned but doesn't know what else to do with her life or skills besides take up this new job offer. So for their similarities they're also kind of opposites.

Merry Christmas Eve, everyone!

@Redking0380 I like the CS! Very fun concept, and married PCs are rare in my experience so that presents some opportunities for different writing. The one thing I would add is a weakness to the powers, since right now it appears she has super strength, speed and control of fire without any drawbacks. I'd also remove the super speed bit, to give her room for growth.

@Azure Bubbles I like the CS, it is approved! Please put it in the Characters tab.

@Tally Dor take your time and think of a good concept! I probably won't start until January 2nd, unless everyone is so excited that I must start sooner lol

@Silver Carrot interesting, there could be some fun character interactions between your PC and Julian.

Well then everyone should just account for my character in their villain arcs. Kidding. :P

I'm more than happy to adjust them as a field strategist and on-site data analyst if you'd rather have heroes be physically present during arcs - that's totally workable for me. I was more curious if a less punch-up hero would work for the setting, since we can't all be flipping cars and punching giant space worms. :) I'll start working out a concept and let you double check if it's okay.

@Silver Carrot very clever power! Not one I would have thought of. So Madison fights hand to hand with her wire powers and equipment supplementing it, is that right? I could definitely see room to grow, given that they can't be manipulated yet. And after thinking about it, since the enemies will likely be villains that will be strong enough to impact steel wire, I don't consider this OP.

I like her backstory also. Your character is approved! I can tell you put a lot of thought into her.

Ok so my original plans for the day fell through. So this is the result of that free time!! I know this is a bit ambitious two characters and all but they are a team! I also understand Starshine's power is more on the 'interesting' side. I am open to criticism Tho!
