This is a question I've always had. I always stick to less then five, but I know some people who do like 10 at once (which is crazy).
What else effects it? Interest? Level(free, casual, advanced)?
Just like a poll thing, I guess. I've always wondered what others would say to the same question.

Im in 2 at the moment, both advanced, both slow movers though one of them is picking up the pace. Mind you I typically work 40 hours a week so I frankly dont have time for much more.

1-2 is the best number in my opinion. Any more than that, and you'd be quitting or slowing down in one or a few RPs, and ruining said RPs you're in.

Speak for yourself, please.

Group roleplays usually slow down on their own anyway, and you don't absolutely have to post multiple times a day for casual or advanced. The same goes for my 1x1s, and all of them are older than a month. Just because you can't handle more than 2 doesn't mean others can't.

Also, this is not a personal attack. ijs :D

I'd be inclined to believe you if it weren't for the mountains of dead RP around. You should've seen the old RP guild if you weren't there, buddy. For each category, the number of stable surviving RPs don't really ever reach two digits, compared to the thousands of dead RPs around. And how often do you realise that a person who quits an RP is involved in multiple others?

Then there's the number of completed RPs. You could count them with a single hand even with a few fingers amputated, I'd say.

If your post isn't a personal attack, I don't see any efforts to make it not seem like one.

I was there, and people quit for their own reasons. Life happens, People lose interest, or maybe they don't want to be apart of it anymore. These are living breathing people behind the computers.

Also, it's kind of hard to not make my response sound like a personal attack when you just said anyone who takes up more than 1-2 roleplays kills roleplays and slow them down, which is not the case. Which is why I said, speak for yourself, because this question is in relation to you. People like myself and others who actually do a lot of roleplays are more than capable of responding for themselves. The great thing about group roleplays as the responsibility doesn't just fall on my shoulders, but a lot of others and I am apart of roleplays with people who GM their owns roleplays and on top of that are apart of a buttload more. Sure, it may take a bit to respond, but if I am only apart of 1 roleplay I get bored waiting for everyone else to post. It's better if I have more to do.

Someone not posting here? Alright, I'll just go there for awhile. The groups I'm in are all pretty much dedicated. I suppose you've had bad experiences, but I only see people quit when they lose interest or real life happens.

We personally feel comfortable with only a few. Others can only handle one, and others yet can handle many more. There are countless factors affecting it all.

For us right now, it is one as GM, a second as player and a third as a prospective player.

The key factors we operate on is, imagination, workload/effort & time. For us, the RP we GM takes considerable work, probably about as much as two regular RPs. But it is also a slow-moving RP, with there being weeks between some posts and hours between others.

We avoid joining more than three simply because we feel we can't take time to participate in more without at least one suffering.

Interesting responses. :)
I really think one of the deciding factors is how often you're expected to post. Some advanced RPs really last because people only have to post once a week, so the chance of them being unable to is small.
Eh, just an opinion. Thanks for those that answered, it sated my curiousity.

One live one, which moves at a snail's pace. Which is cool, because I can be gone for two weeks and nothing would change.

Right now I'm in three. Which is easily enough. 'specially since the one I'm GM'ing is pretty intensive.

It's exactly because life happens, people lose interest and that there are living, breathing people behind those computers that I'm saying what I'm saying. RPing is a very funny hobby, it being very fun and very serious at the same time. Before joining an RP, it is expected that we make sure that we anticipate life happening or us losing interest. To not do so is just selfish. But of course, as there are living, breathing people, it's too much to ask for, isn't it? The statistics speak for itself.

I wasn't doing any fingerpointing. I'm just stating a general rule that I observed in the roleplayerguild universe based on the overwhelming evidence I saw. Therefore it's phrased as such. Now, you can point to me saying that I could have said it better, which there's no doubt I could, but it remains statistically sound that what I said is more or less a general rule.

Of course, being the cautious person that I am, 1-2 roleplays simultaneously is just me being cautious. I'd say 3, but I'm not willing to participate in that amount of roleplays these days because the more roleplays you join in general, the bigger the chance you're going to let go of one or more. Really, without a way to track the success rate of a roleplayer, who would you trust more? A roleplayer who's involved in like 6-7 roleplays at the same time or a more humble one who's in 1-2 roleplays?

I think you're being a little oversensitive, seeing how zealous you are even when I'm not making moves against you. But then again this is the internet, and anonymity has a way of inflating someone's aggression. The topic doesn't even have to be about someone's death or terrorist attacks or politics, but such is the internet, no?

Depending on how active they are, I suppose. For rather active roleplays, I don't think I can go more than 2-3 at once. But as it stands right now, most of the RP I'm in is currently on hold since my partners disappeared =/ I know it's Finals and all, but I kinda wish they would give me a heads up before. So right now I'm at 1 active RP xD which is a 1x1 in PM.

Usually one, maybe two. And those are usually ones I'm running.

I have other things to do, so being in multiple RPs seem mostly like a time sink.

Between the two sites I frequent, normally three or four. It is normally a pretty healthy mix of one on ones and group roleplays.

I find I'm really turned off by roleplays that require me to post multiple times a day. Roleplaying is something that I do for fun, and the moment I feel like it is a chore, I'll bow out. I know some people love a faster pace, but it isn't for me. I do my best to let my partner know that from day one though, so I generally don't have any problems.

I'm in like 10 on three different sites. I have plenty of free time for it, and they don't move that actively for it to be an issue. I'm basically waiting on them to start, or for someone else to post.

I never do more than 1 advanced level, and keep total amount low so I spend more time on each of them. In short, quality over quantity.
