Overview

A role-play based in a post-industrial dystopian version of Earth, “Terra”, relying heavily on cyberpunk elements particularly around social order with hints of cybernetics, robotics, cyber organisms. The role-play looks to avoid the typical online setting of the genre focusing more on the human aspect of it who live in a high tech-low life world of computers, technology and corruption. Mega-corporations have become governments and control almost all aspects of life holding political, social, military and economic power. Our characters will take on the roles of mercenaries, from cold, calculated hit-men for hire to lawful bounty hunters and everything in between. Hired by, private or progressing their own agenda, ranked by a notoriety system also effectively working as a karma system.

*The notoriety system works like karma systems seen implemented into games. It’ll heavily influence how you are perceived by both other players and NPCs, as well as the consequences of your actions.

The more contracts/bounties the higher ranking, notoriety measured by means of kill/capture. Example. Killing a Top 5 politician or apprehending a high-ranking criminal will earn you a lot more notoriety than a target of lesser note or stature.

2302. Terra (Formerly known as Earth). Population – 11 Billion. Society has moved on from production of goods and onto the production of services, ending the era of industrialization. More so than ever before in human history knowledge is power in a world ran by ideas. Cybernetics while still in an early stage are beginning to be implemented more and more but have not yet made themselves commonplace most often related to military personnel or gang members who have gotten hold of the technology over the black market. Vast mega-cities reign over the majority of the Earth leaving little natural space on land mass other than a few pockets and artificial habitats, most commonly parks in districts and those with a more scientific or practical function like timber farms (Trees grown en masse for the purpose of producing timber). Mega-corporations control society much like a government an example of one of the more prominent being Eurocorp. Other notable mentions include JPN-22 and Nova INC among many more. Surprisingly mobile phones, and computers have not become a thing of the past although have advanced technologically to becoming an absolute necessary part of life and has revolutionized how consumers act with the digital world. Humans have been divided into two categories by man-made evolution that far overshadows and outweighs simply male and female but not Human and Cyborg. The latter being those who make use of permanent augmented cybernetics such as artificial body parts often designed to carry out specific functions. Cyborg is a broad generalization as there are varying degrees from minor augmentation to those who are arguably more machine than human. The societal shift has lead to a difference in views on cybernetics many seeing as unnatural who stand opposed on differing scales of radicalism while the same scale also applies to the other side. Most mercenaries are hired by private corporations for espionage and assassination as well as security detail work among other career opportunities. Outside of this there are a number of mercenaries who work privately with hit-men and bounty hunters having become well paid jobs where the work was constant and the rewards easy to reap. It has also been known for mercenaries to join social activists as well as movements both social or political using their talents to further said ideology or mission.

Setting

With the handover of power from the traditional political governments to Mega-corporations, countries ceased to exist. A process that took a century to complete transformed previously defined borders. Continents became countries headed by that regions specific corporation, mainland Europa (where our story is based) governed by Eurocorp, North America and South America split into Nova and Solace, Asia splintered and divided into a number of smaller corporations working as a conglomerate with notable mentions; Indocorp, JPN-22, Korparat18 (KORPO) to name a few.

Districts

The old countries of Europe morphed and shifted to become Districts with vast mega-cities interconnected spanning the continent. Infrastructure and improvements in public transport networks and mechanics has made getting anywhere in the entire sovereignty of Eurocorp reachable with relative ease and efficiency. Many districts are heavily bordered by law enforcement who are ever present at crossing zones, checking relevant documents and searching for contraband.

The most heavily bordered zones are those separating West and East Europe, influence from Korporat 18 in many previously Eastern European countries had affected numerous aspects of living. Differing laws on cybernetics, firearms, and in some districts racial profiling warrant the wall that runs across the continent relatively similar to old borders, not only law enforcement but military presence is often seen here in the interests of Eurocorp.

Europa is split into 38 districts of differing status and accessibility.

Human
Unmodified, Jack-of-all-trades, regular everyday humans. The way nature intended is what a minority of this social group will tell you. Someone who has not undergone cybernetic modification or augmentation of any kind. It is debatable whether or not those who have needed cybernetics for severe, life-saving medical cases are Human or Cyborg which links deeply with the social construct of identity.

Cyborg
Nothing is certain and everything can be altered, even the human body. Flesh and bone have become just as malleable as data.The more advanced individual components of the body can be replaced or upgraded by surgical procedure, just like the components of any other machine. Some splinter groups within this wider group despise the human body’s physical constraints and discover freedom in its abandonment. The human body has become seen as a shell independent and detachable from personality and mind. While roughly 60% of the world’s population are Cyborg by definition the broad category covers those with minimal augmentation and only about 30% of the world’s population being considered ‘heavily modified.’

An exclusive caste in society forming a ruling elite. Urban myth and legend has developed this class group into something God-like, more legend than human leading to the name Ethereal. They are a private group who keep out of public light and sit higher than the heads of the Mega-corporations. A sort of ‘silent investor’ in this world.

Eurocorp

Eurocorp -Europa's governing body, mega-corporation, conglomerate responsible for political, social, military and economic power. Agent's of Eurocorp act as eyes and ears in a grimey side of business. Eurocorp is responsible for a large portion of the world's cybernetics research and development. Governs the EPA and EDF, there is nothing higher in Europa than the mysterious Eurocorp.

= Unit BLCK

Unit BLCK- The EPA's (Europa Policing Authority) elite, heavily armoured and heavily armed task-forces who are trained to act efficiently as stand-alone operatives made only even more deadly in a team Unit BLCK, BLCK or B-Unit deal with any and all major crimes that involved the unlawful use, theft or crimes committed with the aid of cybernetics. B-Unit operatives utilize a multitude of latest weaponry and body armour technology. Their exoskeleton suits black a namesake of the task-force.

EDF

EDF - Europa Defence Forces, the military branch of Eurocorp responsible for military action, resolution and conflict domestic or foreign. Eastern Europan's are banned from rising past the rank of sergeant in the EDF for fear and security against Korporat18 espionage. Most commonly seen in public in Europa at heavy border points, particularly access points linking west and east Europa. EDF covers, armed forces, naval and air forces.

17DEM

17DEM (17 District Equality Movement) is a politically charged social activist group known for their violence as much as the political prowess of it's silent leaders. Labelled as 'terrorists' by Eurocorp in recent years, 17DEM has taken to a more reserved guerrilla stance on engaging the enemy. Groups are constantly warring against both EPA and EDF in the streets of districts all over Europa on a regular occurrence. The group demand that the borders that separate not only east and west Europa should be removed but that the walls and 'hard borders' should be immediately removed as well allowing free travel of all Europa citizens under general human rights. A term that 17DEM members would argue has lost all meaning in this new day and age.

Weapons

Weapons of 2302 come in various forms, shapes and with firearms are primarily either conventional shell weaponry or energy based weapons. Weapon mods have become almost a necessity to those who can afford the credits. Sights, Consoles, various under slung equipment and other performance enhancing modifications have have become commonplace especially in this line of work.

• Shell weaponry- Conventional. While firing mechanisms differ around shell firearms, gunpowder ignites with the explosion propelling the ammunition out of the barrel. The used casing is ejected so the next can be primed.

• Energy- Classifies laser
Laser generally speaking shoots a beam of destructive energy or light to hit reflective targets. Powered by batteries this takes away the need to reload as often. However, due to the intense energy drain of powering this weapon, a battery needs to be replaced every 30-80 shots depending on the weapon type. Considerably more than conventional small arms. Laser technology has it’s own problems and while manufacturer’s claim the battery packs are completely waterproof this is not always the case. Cheaper models have been known not to fire on occasion or even occasionally backfire, severely burning unprotected skin.

• Energy – Classifies Electrothermal.
Electrothermal weaponry is rare and expensive, namely because of how dangerous it can be in the wrong hands. It primarily serves two functions to either seriously burn and potentially kill living organisms, this is also known as plasma and the secondary more secretive function with the use of ionized projectiles with sufficient velocity to cause impact damage and also fry mechanical targets, like cybernetics. Major downfalls of the weaponry are it’s extremely limited usage before overheating and requiring cool down. Also prone to needing repairs and damage to the model can end up catastrophic results for the user.

Weapons can be broken down into several categories;
• Pistols, any single shot, semiautomatic or fully automatic firearm that can be easily fired with relative accuracy (depending on mods), using one hand.
• Shotguns, commonly stripped back to slide/pump action and semi-automatic, primarily fires buckshot and breaching rounds. Brutal in close quarters.
• Rifles, include assault, carbine, and marksman rifles most effective at a medium range.
• SMG, or sub-machine gun, fires either semi or fully automatically at rapid speeds generally use pistol ammo/cartridges/batteries.
• Long-Range, Sniper rifles, a specialized weapon that is impractical for everyday use or CQB but brutally efficient at killing from a distance. Often used for a more stealthy approach.
• Heavy, is a broad category including special weapons not for everyday use, missiles, grenades, electrothermal cannons, etc.
• Melee, sword, daggers, knives, all that good stuff, anything used for fighting melee or hand-to-hand.

Weapon modifications or MODs categorize everything from custom grips and folding stocks to sights to grenade launchers and electrothermal under slung components. While there is a huge number of modifications they are largely reserved for Corporation Agents, Military, and Law-Enforcement in an effort to keep ahead of criminals and other movements within society that get their hands on illegal firearms. However, the lack of MODs available to those willing to look leaves an open business endeavor for the black market which through it’s networks can get you a wide variety of goodies for your toys, prepare to part with your credits.

Be reasonable with the gear, weapons and cybernetics you kit your character out with. Remember this is a story-based RP that will develop over time. It’s not a race to get the biggest boom-stick or niftiest MOD or prototype cybernetics. Patience.

There’s no real tie to any old world patriotism other than in small groups of radicals. If you’re going to give your character a reason to identify as something other than from Europa then please make it a good or interesting reason.

Bangs regularly touch at his eyebrows and all around tend to curl upward naturally. He is fit due to years of some type of hard work, though his fitted suit and tie will hide his otherwise rough stature. Oscar's skin is bronzed, and his demeanor showing nothing but patience. He prefers a black suit when nothing threatens his wardrobe; when in the field, he dons what seems to be a patchwork of black market EDF and 17DEM armor that may favor his tastes.
Personality:
While erring on the side of caution when it comes to future preparation, Oscar is impulsive for the immediate actions and steps up to fulfill his code of honor when someone is wronged. When relaxed or in social atmospheres, he slows down and savors the moment, only then able to consider before acting. Socially, the man gives everyone a second chance and prefers to look at the positive side of things. In more grim situations he can have a dark sense of humor to keep himself aware and in the scene.

"Oscar "Mulligan" Van Cleef. I am what some call 'old-fashioned.' My life was governed by the local traditions of family, religion, and the grand outdoors. Long before timber farms and other such resource wells were legally allowed to take over the Mid Western US, my family had a long and proud history of holdin' fancy titles such as Rangers, Search and Rescue Operators, and a dash of Activists. That's right, son: nature has had its place among the Van Cleef family for many generations. For a time, the wild side of my father's fathers came to light when they, the mega corporations that is, tried to overthrow the reserves we had so carefully kept untouched. It wasn't all that successful, as you might can imagine.

"I can't say it was all for nothin', though. I reckon they saw fit that we're cheaper to keep happy than to get rid of altogether,
so they allow us to live on borrowed land. Even after all that, trouble finds us anyhow. Some bounty hunter, lookin' slick and official, moseyed on up to our place, askin' 'bout some outlaw hiding in benevolent Mother Nature nearby. Well, some credits were offered, and I took up on it. Trackin' is in my blood, you see. We took a few nights, but we finally found the ol' boy. He was armed, but not expectin' to be found so quickly. This bounty hunter fella knocked 'im out, handed me my credits, and that was that.

"But I couldn't leave that at that. I asked if I could join him. It took a little negotiatin', and next thing I know it I traveled 'round the country for years. Long story short, brother, we found a woman. A cyborg, especially. She killed my partner, and I tracked her every movement. Escape me she won't, no sir. She's in Europa. And I'm takin' her down once an' for all."

Appearance:
Natalia looks like quite an innocent creature. Standing at a rather small height of 5'4" and weighs averagely for her height, she doesn't really fit the 'intimidating' category. She has short red hair that reaches only to her shoulder and matching red ruby eyes. She often has aviator goggles on her head. She has a lean and athletic type of body but is hidden under her white tank top and brown aviator jacket with varying types of pants. She usually sports a bright smile on her face and exerts this aura of happiness and innocence. When she dons the 'Robin Hood' persona, she wears a costume reminiscent of the thief hero. She has the hat and all! However, this clothing is heavily modified to also act as her armor.

Personality:
Natalia has a different sense of justice than most would think. Growing up on the story of Robin Hood, she came to pity the poor and hate the rich. She ends up as a person who strongly believes that what she is doing is right despite it being against the law. Despite this, she does help out the law every now and then when she believes it to be just - often helping them with catching thieves who steal only for themselves. She is unaware of her hypocritical ways. While she tries to become exactly like Robin Hood - her rather selfish heart makes her take more than half of the heist and give the remaining to the poor. Though when you meet Natalia when she's neither stealing nor helping the law, she is quite a fun person to be around. She doesn't beat around the bush and loves talking with others.

Natalia was born and partially grew up in JPN-22. Though, she was never meant for a normal life. Her parents were thieves and assassins of the greatest bidder. Names well known among the community as the 'Black Cats' who were also under the group of the 'Rapscallion' - a rather straightforward name to be honest. She grew up thinking what her parents were doing was right as half of what they get is given to the guild and then distributed among the poor people of the country. However, it also meant that they were always on the run. However oddly enough, she quite enjoyed the life on the run as her parents were always there, every step of the way.

She was soon offered a position within the Rapscallions - Robin Hood. Natalia was ecstatic and started training with them in the arts of stealing. She, along with the rest of the Rapscallions, were at large and the JPN-22's task force were always after them. She loves the thrill of adventure - the thrill of danger. Natalia's entire teenage life was dedicated to being part of the Rapscallions along with her parents and her partner - Jimmy. Heist after heist - pickpocket after pickpocket, she had a pretty damn large bounty on her head.

When everything was just going so well, everything went to hell. Someone had tipped them off - a rat was within the organization of thieves - and they were raided by the task force. Natalia was lucky enough to be out on a job when this happened. She was sent an emergency message and Natalia fled. Pulling strings to get out of her predicament, she ended up in District 38. She had to settle down for a bit - become a normal citizen and generally lay low as to avoid any type of government catching up to her. It has only been a year and she has stolen little but helped the government quite a few times already. She has a love-hate relationship with the government as she helps them more frequently than she steals - and none of her heists ever amounted to anything even close to the ones she stole before. Currently, they're not actively looking for her though.

Natalia often works odd jobs here and there, accepting what she can, when she can. The government can contact Robin Hood through ringing a phone twice before hanging up and then a public phone would call a government-related building and have the coordinates to the meet-up there. Actually, anyone can call her as she does act as a mercenary though half the time, it's just prank calls and she'd turn up for nothing.

Her only cybernetic is her left arm which was lost in a firefight before. Constant maintenance is poured into it despite it only being slightly above average. Most of her money goes to this.

Appearance: Anima is 1.92 meters high and has a slim build. Her hair has a metallic tint. She is always wearing something that obscures her face.
Personality:

Trustworthy – Vengeful – Calculated – No-Bull Attitude

Bio: Anima, born Amenthis Idolum was born into a family of cops. Her parents and grandparents and most of her family were cops or studied law and became lawyers. Amenthis was not an exception, as soon as she was able to do so, she enrolled in the Police Academy and soon became a Police officer.

A year later, while on a case, her partner was killed by a gang and Amenthis, despite being told not to take on the gang alone and wait for backup, she went after them. They cornered her and gave her the beating that killed her or so that's what they thought it happened. The reality was that almost every bone in her body was broken and a few organs were beyond repair.
Medics came and deemed her too far gone to do anything but a cyborg-specialist doctor decided to further her research on cybernetics and stole her body. Amenthis was declared dead to the public but she was kept alive by machines until her surgery began. 80% of her body was changed into robotic parts, only her hearth and brain remained human as those were the only ones not destroyed.

For two years, tests were run on Anima to be sure she was fully functional and she was but while Anima's brain was supposedly scrubbed clean of memories it didn't work and Anime remembered her old life. She understood that she couldn't present herself to her family like she and after killing the doctor and destroyed any evidence that would point out to her existence she disappeared.

A year later, Anima resurfaced and decided to put her skills as a cop and her new abilities to use as a bounty hunter.

Cybernetic Eyes - Can accurately zoom in the distance, see the environmental conditions (wind, temperature) speed of moving objects and some other basic things. Early model but precise.

Cybernetic Legs - Allows Anima to jump higher than a normal human and run at greater speeds but they don't look human and are of a cheaper model of parts.

Cybernetic Organs - They simply permit Anima to live.

Standing at 6'2" with a slim, athletic build, Declan's sun-beaten skin is covered in calluses and scars from years of less-than-scrupulous work. His dark-blonde hair is shoddily self-cut, shaved close to the scalp on the sides and back. A patchy beard and mustache blankets his jawline, a shade of color darker than the hair on his head. His eyes are a deep ocean blue, standing out against his more rugged features. Declan's clothing style is similarly rugged and weatherworn, typically consisting of a heavy leather coat over a distressed button-down or t-shirt and wife-beater, completed by belted cargo pants or jeans and dirt-stained combat boots.

Personality:

Amiable – Brutish – Driven – No Self-Control

Bio: Declan was never one to speak much of his past, choosing to run away rather than face and confront it. His beginnings were modest enough: his father was an unambitious, browbeaten junkyard owner, worn down by the burden of unfulfilled aspirations; while his mother had disappeared sometime before Declan could remember, whether through death or abandonment, he couldn't say. He spent the formative years of his childhood wandering the expanses of the scrapyard, spinning stories and grand adventures from the discarded husks of metal that coated the landscape. It was during one of these wanders that he located a deactivated KX-Series security droid, who would soon become his closest and most trusted companion.

Declan ran away from home when he was 15 years old, overcome with a wanderlust and desire to see the rest of Europa, to not be bound to that one damnable junkyard.

Soon exposed to the fickleness and loneliness of the world, Declan was forced to wander as a vagabond, taking on odd jobs here or there for a decent meal or two, or a night's stay at a cheap hotel, if he was lucky. He would find work as a waiter, chauffeur, toll-booth operator, janitor, or any other low-paying occupation that was offered to him, each time shadowed by his automaton. The security droid, designated as K-453, helped serve Declan as a steadfast follower and protector, guarding over Declan through his teenage and early adult years.

It was by the age of 19 that Declan received his first bounty hunting contract. A small-time arms dealer who needed taking out. The bounty itself was rather small, but it was more money than Declan had laid his hands on in his life.

Pooling what money he had for a two-bit pistol, Declan took the bounty and began his first hunt as a hired mercenary - it was almost his last.

Untrained and inexperienced in a fight, even against a small-time criminal, Declan's first contract quickly turned from a simple show-up-and-shoot into a physical brawl that turned ugly - fast. It took the intervention of K-4 to save Declan's life, leaving the young mercenary with a few broken ribs and a very poignant message.

Not undeterred by this, Declan began honing his skills both as a warrior and a marksman, gradually building a small reputation for himself within Europa's bounty hunting community.

Now 16 years after his first job, Declan is a seasoned and pragmatic freelancer, shaped and honed by his experiences into a dangerous hunter, leaving the wanderlust boy behind as a slowly-fading memory.

Appearance: Standing 5'8 with an average, if slightly slim, build Drayfus does little more with his dark-gray hair than keep it short enough that it doesn't mess with his helmet and the same goes for the small goatee on his chin. He'll often wear a pair of glasses when not wearing his helmet more out of old habit than necessity as he no longer needs them now that his left eye is cybernetic, giving him heterochromatic eyes with the right being gray and the left being a faint red.

Jovial – Reckless – Easy-going – Wild

Bio: Born on the continent of Australia, Drayfus was part of a Death Squad working for the collection of governing corporations that make up a syndicate referring to itself as Altus, sometimes referred to as "The Commonwealth" after it's region's previous name. He was on the team since he was 18 and was close friends with the team's heavy gunner. Their usual Targets were opposition groups not unlike Europa's 17DEM, if fact they even came across a small chapter of 17DEM at one point.

All it took was one horribly botched operation. His friend died during the mission along with most of the squad, and the repercussions forced the survivors, including him, to sever official ties with The Commonwealth, Not that he had any love for it to begin with. Drayfus went on to become a mercenary only he had very little limitations on what jobs he took and who he took them from, anything from just being another hired guard to assassination, this eventually caused a problem, as there were as many people seeking his life as there were seeking his services. Thankfully the solution was fairly simple: Leave Australia.

Going about this was about as simple as he managed to get a favor from, of all people, 17DEM. They got him to Europa and once there it was easy enough to get lost among the violence there, not that anyone was really going to bother following him from Australia anyway, he wasn't nearly worth the effort. However, as a bit of repayment for the favor he did have to kill an EPA officer that 17DEM found particularly troublesome.

Loyal – Merciless – Resourceful – By Any Means Necessary

Bio: Originating in JPN-22, Hideo's entire family worked for the corporation, he himself got a position as low-level security at an early age alongside his brother who was going to become a weapons technician. Regardless of family ties Hideo proved he was worthy of the position, climbing the ranks in security before transferring to the regular police force and spending a few years doing the same there, always remaining staunchly loyal to both his family and his company.

During his time with the police he was often part of counter operations against the influence of other corporations, the main one being Eurocorp, as well as terrorist groups such as 17DEM. His participation on these operations got him approached for a position with the Military. He was brought on with special forces and given additional training before being placed on a strike team and equipped with some of the best gear JPN-22 had to offer, including a weapon barely out of prototype stages(a gift from his brother).

Hideo was eventually called on again, this time for a slightly different type of assignment. He was deployed farther into Eurocorp's territory with discretion to act as an independent agent and given a single line that he could call on for resources. He was there with one objective: Find ways to destabilize Eurocorp's hold on the region, by any means necessary.
