Alright, another question, and maybe a little constructive criticism that just sprang to mind:

When it says 5/25/125/etc. men, does that include officers or is it just the enlisted men?

Because if it includes officers, that means the army has a noble-to-commoner ratio of at least 1:4. Apologies if I'm being nitpicky, but that does not seem particularly efficient, as that ratio does not seem like it would exist in everyday life. As a consequence, this would seriously limit the amount of soldiers who can join (for every four men you need to have a Cornet already available to lead them.)

I also feel that it might divide the units just a little bit more than necessary, since it seems unlikely to me that a 25-man unit will need to be split and separated five ways, and the unit is so small that the Lieutenant doesn't really need that many people to relay orders since they can all hear him. Additionally, if the Lieutenant gets killed it will then take longer for the five cornets beneath him to work out which one of them possesses enough seniority to assume command over the entire force.

Basically, it just seems to me that there's too many cornets. Two or three per platoon seem like a much more manageable amount - they could have their five man teams and the rest could answer directly to the Lieutenant. Alternatively, you could also increase the Bandon side (and by extension, the Omadon size as well.) Or maybe let NCOs take the role of Omadon leaders within the unit, alongside the Cornets, but the Cornets would still have authority over them.

Again, these are just some suggestions. Hope you don't mind.

1. Its actually a one to five ratio

2. This is historically accurate for a regiment of dragoons, which are cavalry- the ratio is much higher in the infantry for example.

3. A five to one subordinate is plenty efficient, especially since each cornet has a subordinate NCO to help them and the lieutenant does as well.

4. Its also administratively useful- guiding and being responsible for individual soldiers makes a platoon leaders job untenable.

5. As an aside, breaking down a cavalry platoon that much allows it to scout and maneouver effectively at speed- since, yknow, horseback.

Not at all, thanks for showing interest! I think @Brocktree summed it up fairly well, but what it basically boils down to is that this is a regiment of cavalry, so the officer-to-enlisted ratio is a lot lower than what you'd find in a typical infantry regiment. This is because the need to directly coordinate the men under a cavalry officer's command is much higher than that of a line infantry officer's -- relating back to their respective combat roles and the military tactics at the time. Line infantry simply don't need as much coordination as cavalry.

I based the organization of the army off of Napoleonic era armies (French & Prussian mostly), as well as the composition of the Imperial army in the Komnenian restoration. Of course, I changed some things around as I saw fit to better match the RP and make things less complex!

Alright, the first IC post is up! Sorry it took a bit longer than I expected -- I ended up cutting about 30% of the post to use for the next one. Those of you who are fellow Sabres of Infinity fans will notice a few modest similarities too, ha.

Anyway, please don't feel like you have to start your introductory IC where I left off, though it is fine to do so. Go into as much detail as you want, have a flashback, anything you feel like. I'll do character meetings with the Captain as they come, and once everyone has had theirs I'll move the story along to the much-loved training montage.

As always, if you guys have any questions/complaints/etc, don't hesitate to PM me or post here in the OOC. Here's to what is hopefully a long-lived RP :)

Alright, if that's how they did it historically, I won't object. My bad.

1. Its actually a one to five ratio

So the five man squad doesn't include the officer? Making it six men overall?

Then it would be a 1:4 ratio. Because each Omadon would have one Cornet and four enlisted men.

Dude... Let it go. It’s not that important and frankly your worrying about it is super annoying. Send the GM a PM and figure it out there.

I'm sorry, how does me asking a question in order to better understand something affect you? The OOC section is meant for those types of questions.

Yes, but you'll probably be the last one for a while!

@Not Fishing@Brocktree Each omadon is a group of five enlisted men led by one cornet (5+1). So the total for a bandon would technically be 31 men.

I'm hoping you won't mind belaying your last, albeit temporarily. I only just began reading up on this, but it would be fantastic if I could slip in a CS as well. (Considering you had a few dropouts, I hope it won't be an issue).

Fantastic. The timing truly couldn't have been better. I'd simply stumbled upon the thread on accident and was immediately intrigued by the setting (I too am a fan of the Infinity Series). I postponed my reading of the universe details in order to squeeze in my interest, but once that is complete, I will work up a fitting personality to add to the mix.
