Setting the Scene

The year is 2004. Spirit and Opportunity have landed on Mars, everyone is going crazy over their new Nokia Razrs, and Facebook has just taken its first step on the path towards total global conquest. The digital age has only just begun, and magecraft can expect to be secure in its secrecy for at least another ten years. In this time period, Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, head of the Yggdmillennia network of mages, has decided to announce his intentions to secede from the Mage’s Association publicly by revealing he has obtained the Greater Grail of Fuyuki thought lost after the disastrous Third Holy Grail War in 1936, and that Yggdmillennia intends to hold its own Holy Grail War.

His proclamation draws swift retribution. Association Enforcers are sent in to try and steal back the Holy Grail but are ultimately dispatched effortlessly by Darnic’s Lancer-class Servant. Whether through luck or coincidence, however, the Grail’s internal backup system is activated, still intact even after Darnic’s decades of tampering with the Grail. The backup allows seven Masters selected by the Association to summon Servants to oppose what is referred to by the mysterious Ruler-class Servant as “the Black Faction”, thus making the Association’s chosen agents the “Red Faction”.

The war is to be held in Trifas, a small town in Romania. It is suspected that Darnic’s original intention was to summon the most famous lord of those ancient lands, Vlad III, as his Servant in this war. However, either something went wrong or a better opportunity presented itself, and now Trifas is simply a convenient battleground where no other Heroic Spirits of note besides the bloody Impaler may benefit from a significant fame boost.

Yggdmillennia, having chosen Trifas as their base of operations long in advance of their public declaration, has spent a fortune and decades of labor molding the surrounding area to their advantage. Reinforced castle walls, perimeter defenses, bugs and spies spread all across Trifas, an army of homunculi to serve as infantry and as a large reserve supply of magical energy for their summoned Servants, and most importantly, the Servants themselves. All the preparations have been made and yet Yggdmillennia remains cautious. Why? Perhaps the incarnation of the rogue Ruler Servant Amakusa, eliminated by Darnic in the 1960s after a long search for any survivors of the Third Holy Grail War, has left the clan feeling jumpy.

Both Caster and Lancer have been summoned months in advance of the actual Great Holy Grail War, and even as the Association rushes to mobilize in the two months given to them by Yggdmillennia, plans to summon the remaining Servants of Black are progressing as quickly as the Trifas leyline will allow. The nearby city of Sighișoara is suspected to be the touchpoint of the Red Faction’s offensive, as it is both in proximity to both Trifas and the capital city of Bucharest, making it a place where the secrecy of magecraft can still be preserved whilst making a large-scale invasion of the kind that could be hidden in Trifas difficult. Battle plans are already being drawn on how to deal with this and other x factors, but the most important variable remains the Servants.

The summoning proceeds quickly...

Locations

Trifas

Yggdmillennia's ancestral land since before the age of the Ottoman invasion. A bustling little community modeled after the ancient buildings of Sighișoara, its residents feel safe within its walls. They know they are protected by the lords that live in the citadel upon the hill, and do well to respect when its lights come on. Though there is certainly magic at play keeping the townsfolk docile and unsuspecting, Trifas is otherwise unassuming, its traps and hidden secrets kept veiled behind the cloth of everyday life. Most of the buildings in Trifas predate the modern age and telling shops apart from houses or public offices can be difficult for those not from the area. Home to a variety of local industries, mostly agriculture and textiles, Trifas has a colorful local market and many restaurants, bars, and shops worth visiting.

Millennia Fortress

Farmer's Market

Main Street

Residential District

Sighișoara

A small town of 20,000 to the north of Trifas, well-known for its preserved Middle Age architecture. It's a UNESCO heritage site and a popular tourist destination, which makes it a likely target for occupation by the Red Faction.

War Assets

Homunculi Soldiers

Caster’s Augury

Millennia Fortress

The Millennia Fortress is a triumphant intersection of gilded opulence, medieval fortification, and magical might. Boasting over 200 rooms, including 36 bedrooms, 42 bathrooms, 64 fireplaces, three kitchens, five elevators, seven libraries, a swimming pool, a greenhouse, an atrium, a garden, and a vast underground complex outfitted with a panic room, a gymnasium, and all the industrial equipment needed to cultivate an army of homunculi, or whatever sort of product one might require a Workshop to make, it could truly be said to have everything. The fortress is surrounded by layered Bounded Fields that offer numerous methods of detecting or deterring intruders, as well as protection against attacks by forces that would attempt to forcefully besiege the estate, whether via directly repelling invaders or trapping them in a labyrinth of halls and doors that all open into confusing, non-linear architecture. Finally, the castle walls have been meticulously augmented over the course of centuries with various charms, runes, and other spells that make them capable of withstanding a prolonged bombardment from something with the destructive power of modern artillery without breaking. It also has a 24/7 in-house staff of homunculi trained as both bodyguards and competent servants, capable of seeing to any mundane task.

Enemy Intel

  • The Clocktower is sending one of its elite instructors along with five well-known freelancers and a representative of the Holy Church to fight on their behalf. Most of the Masters of Red have been positively identified except for the Church representative and one other:
    • Feend vor Sembrem; head of the Sembrem noble family whose history with the Clocktower runs deep. An accomplished mage, his skillset is diverse and formidable. There are no gimmicks with this one. Between years of cumulative experience passed down through the Sembrem family and pockets deep enough to afford any number of powerful Mystic Codes, be ready for anything.
    • Jean Rum; freelancer and master of a particularly brutal brand of elemental wind magic. She's known for her fastidious nature and impeccable track record. Like the others, her chakrams make her a monster in 1v1 combat.
    • The Pentel brothers; Cabik and Deimlet. These two are considered oddballs among oddballs by the conservative branch of the Clocktower, but their methodology of dividing their family's Magic Crest between the two of them has made their naturally-honed teamwork even more dangerous. They're rarely seen far apart, so if you see one, be on the lookout for the other. They won’t be far.
    • Rottweil Bersinsky; also known as the Silver Lizard. This man is to be considered unstable and extremely dangerous. He's earned his reputation for a reason and he will not hesitate to strike the killing blow for even a millisecond. Excessive, unrelenting force dispensed with extreme prejudice is advised.

”This is not a tale of Servants. Nor is it a tale of the Masters who command them. And it is certainly no telling of saints, either. This is the story of those who would grant their own wishes...”

Fate/Psuedepigrapha

Welcome welcome, come one and come all! The curtain doth rise on this, our most magnificent of Holy Grail Wars! Put out thy cigarette and take thy seat! No photographs allowed! Hold on to your headwear, my fine fellows, for the show is about to begin!

Ah, but where are my manners? After all, as the esteemed collegiates of Winchester hath declared, “Manners maketh man!” And their manners are more gentle, kind, than of our generation you shall find! I am known by many names and titles, but you may address me as William Shakespeare, the great bard himself, and I shall be your humble Ruler for this grand occasion!

Tonight, o what comedy! O what tragedy! Hell is empty and all the devils are here, for we hath once again descended unto the blood-soaked stage of the Great Holy Grail War! Not an encore, but a redux! A remake! A retelling! Gone are our original cast members! Gone is the apocryphal saint Shirou Amakusa, his self-righteous evil never again to taint the world! With us now, Darnic Prestone Yggdmillennia, a fair man most foul and a foul creature most fair! His objectives unknown and now unimpeded, could this be thine moment to claim ultimate victory over those tyrants that make fools of men, the poisonous magisters that rule over the Clocktower? Or doth his pride cometh before a fall, as cruel fate and her sisters plot to make fools of us all?

I myself, once a mere player on a different stage, join you now as director of this production. Indeed, one man in his time plays many parts, and I find myself enamored- nay, betrothed to this very role! My one, my only wish be’eth not one for the Holy Grail, but for my own miserly, quaking fingers! To write! To sing! Of a battle for the ages, one decorated in sin and selflessness, desire and destruction!

Now, let us begin! Strut and fret your hour upon the stage, my dear players! Will your tale be one told by an idiot; full of sound and fury, signifying nothing? Or shall you breaketh the chains of thy fate and claim thy treasure divine? That sweet, succulent ambrosia known to men around the globe as... the Holy Grail?

And so we begin again! In less fanciful terms, the main thrust of this RP which will be detailed further in the 0th post is a retelling of Fate/Apocrypha in which Shirou Amakusa did not survive the Third Holy Grail War and the Great Holy Grail War of Trifas proceeds more towards Yggdmillennia’s designs as a declaration of rebellion towards the Mage’s Association. This time around, you will be making your own war plans and directly facing off against the Masters of Red handpicked directly by the Clocktower.

Anyone who was in my last Fate RP will be familiar with the ground rules:

  • Respect your GMs. As GM, I and whoever I may declare co-GM have the final say on any submitted character sheets or OOC arguments about lore/gameplay. I reserve the right to deny sheets for whatever reason, whether it be balance issues or just a matter of aesthetics. As this is a PvE RP, there will also be times where I will be required to re-rail the plot or autohit your characters (though never without reason). This is a non-negotiable part of the GM/player contract. As long as you show respect to the position of GM, the GM will show respect to you, and I will do my best to treat everyone fairly.
  • No autohitting, godmodding etc. I don't expect there to be much PvP in this RP, but it's still worth reminding. As I said before, GMs may occasionally autohit players, but only for plot reasons, and never fatally or irreparably. Unless, of course, you break the following rule.
  • Anyone who goes quiet for more than seven consecutive days will receive a message inquiring as to their whereabouts. Failing to respond to this message will be considered to mean you have dropped out of the RP. My intention is to keep this RP going through hell or high water as long as I am able and people are interested, be it for however many months or even years it takes. I will not enforce a strict "you must post this often in so many days" rule, but I do demand that you at least post once a week every week. If you can't make an IC post of any substantial length in that timeframe, then make a short post in the OOC letting us know and explaining the circumstances. If you do, you will be given another three days to post. If that's still not enough time, you can arrange for whoever you're partnered with to take control of your characters until you are able to post, or else they will fall under GM control.
  • Any characters who are under GM control will be subject to the GM's whims. As their players will at that time have been considered to have dropped out, this can include almost anything I may think to do with your characters, up to and including death or dishonor. Please try not to let this happen. We take no joy in this but this rule exists for the express purpose of keeping this RP from stalling because of disappearing players.
  • Servants whose Masters have died (in most cases due to decisions made by the GM) will die unless they are in possession of Independent Action or a Rank B or higher in Mana, in which case they will be allowed to team up with one of the existing Masters or seek shelter at Yggdmillennia Castle to await the appearance of any willing contractors or Masters who have also lost their Servants. In the case of a Master whose Servant drops out, that player will have the option to continue playing both Master and Servant if they so desire, or "adopt" a Servant who has made it safely back to HQ.
  • I will not enforce a "you must post this often in so many days" rule, but I will enforce a "you may only post this often in so many days" rule. A common problem I see in RPs, Fate RPs especially, is a few players posting so much and so often that other people interacting with them feel overwhelmed or left behind, which often leads to them dropping out. I want to avoid this. As such, each player may only post a maximum of twice a day. For some people this may seem slow, for others it may seem fast. However I’m doing it to keep the RP going steady at what I believe is a manageable pace for everyone, and no one is required to post twice a day, you just can't post more than that.
  • Be curteous and respectful to everyone (within reason, of course), and have a great time playing with each other!

Of course, more rules may be added if it ever becomes necessary to do so. In addition to the rules, there will be a 0th post going up containing information about locations, war assets, and other important things in the world of the RP, such as a recap of current events and your current battle strategy (decided hopefully by yourselves for the most part, but Darnic can intercede with some guidance if you ever start to feel a bit directionless). With the absence of strategic assets such as Avicebron, the situation Yggdmillennia finds itself in will be different and I encourage you to think about what larger role you may or may not wish to play in that. You are the scions of Yggdmillennia now. Its fate rests in your hands.

With all that out of the way, here are your character sheets! You may format them however you wish, so long as you stick to this template:

Alright, and with that we have everything we need to start accepting applications! I’ll get to work on some example character sheets and what will hopefully be an informative 0th post as time allows me. If you have any questions, please ask!

@TurboshitterAlright well how do you feel about Okita as an assassin, or Kawakami Gensai as custom assassin? Failing that Napoleon/Tomoe Gozen as archer? I could use that pharoh I wanted to in my fate rp's but i'm forgetting his name.

Alright I'll see about Okita. I'd like to do Gensai but I don't want to rely on pure speed Hax and don't want to put your into a situation where he can auto assassinate a servant without high luck, or intuition due to his noble phantasm being what amounts to an near instantaneous sword slash.

Interesting. I must say I appreciate the attention you gave to plot/post pacing, it's really clear, thanks. I'm not sure how fast I can get sheets up (I work a lot even during pandemic) but we'll see what I can do~ I might reach out to you privately Turbo in regards to some character things (regarding a master probably). I've got some ideas kicking around. Rider sheet will likely come first.

When I get a master sheet closer to completion I'd love to make some pre-existing character connections with everyone too.

Don’t worry, I work during the pandemic too. I even have to go into the office to keep the mail room running so my 9-5 has literally not changed a bit. I understand the difficulties of balancing RP and work.

Also, hell yeah man! This is a good thing to point out to everyone, pre-existing character connections between Masters are encouraged! These guys are ostensibly a loose sort of family, and even if they weren’t, connections make things more interesting.

@Turboshitter Would you mind if I re-used Leon and just twist his backstory to fit the setting, or do you really want me to make a new master? I have no issue with the latter just that its easier to do the former which is why I keep using him since he has yet to actually finish any campaign he's been in.

I would appreciate a new Master but if you don’t have any ideas you like better or if you just really wanna use Leon again, I have no problems with it. However, I would ask that you let me do some digging for a better picture of the character his appearance is based on, because I too have seen that anime :v

@Turboshitter How is keeping track of mana going to work? It seems like that would make things super complex and slow them down a lot, especially for Casters. I was planning on playing a Caster if that's not taken already, but I don't really get this ruling.

That’s more of a rule for Masters than Servants in all honesty and after some second thoughts, I’m considering ditching it. Originally it was an attempt to make powergaming difficult but you make a fair point about it being an unnecessary inconvenience.

@TurboshitterYeah I'm mostly done but I don't know how you wanna work with the mana, and od stuff. She's pretty much her Saber self with some very small assassin flair. I'm not sure what to add to Okita to make her more assassin like as she is pretty on the same nail as Sakura Saber.

@Reflection https://typemoon.fandom.com/wiki/Saber_(Fate/KOHA-ACE)#Swimsuit

Summer Okita as an assassin has that listed under her skills so I'd figured I'd put it on there. If Turbo has an issue with it that's fine I'll remove it but it is official material for her in an assassin class albeit a weird one with something else I don't think she should have outside of summer.

This is one of those weird examples that have become frustratingly common since Grand Order where I have an increasingly difficult time drawing the line on what is and isn’t taking the piss in this franchise. In this case, I’d say that the swimsuit versions of Servants probably fall under “taking the piss” in terms of what can be extrapolated about their actual parameters/skills.

That said, seeing as how Berserkerlot has E-rank MR due to a minor detail in his legend, there’s no clear-cut reason Okita can’t have a lower rank than C in MR if you can find a way to justify it.

@TurboshitterWhile I can't say for a definitive way why Okita would have magic resistance the same can be said of many servants. One would assume it could be any number of reasons. Personally if I had to say it is because as an assassin okita likely would have had to kill mages for her superiors given the fact that she is in the fate universe. Its the only real justification I can give outside of summer okita.
