Operation: Deadman’s Hand

Dead Man's Hand - Adv. Int. Chk
Dead Man's IC
Dead Man's Graveyard! CS

Operation Deadman’s Hand is a zombie survival horror roleplay that takes place in Asheville, North Carolina, or some other place, and the surrounding area. In 2005, mega corporations and politicians used their connections to release a mixture of assemblers, bacteria, and nanobots out into the public, through various means. A large amount was released via accidental spills, and the rest were distributed through food manufacturers, hospitals, and food suppliers. Once released into the world, and being as virtually undetectable as they were, the materials began spreading throughout the human and animal population over the course of the following ten years.

In 2015, the owners of the big mega corporations and the politicians finally decided to hit the button, activating the now assembled microchips across the globe. Their operation was supposed to be simple, watch and record everything that an infected person sees and hears to be stored in a massive database located in the vast undergrounds of Wyoming. As the switch was pressed, the microchips activated but the desired effect was not achieved. From their hideaways, they didn’t know what damage they had caused. It wasn’t until an hour later, when they stepped out and saw what the world had become. People had become primal, relapsed into a state where their base instincts controlled their every move. They were not unlike zombies in the literal sense, except they retained many of their bodies normal functions - as far as strength and speed. Not everyone had turned, some maintained their senses and intelligence. They ran.

The microchips malfunctioned in some people, adding more to the living population - but those that were subsequently captured and bit by the newly turned zombies were once again turned back to the primal way of thinking. With each bite, or bodily fluid exchange, the microchips used its assemblers, and bacteria to manufacture new microchips, and more assemblers. They then pass the new materials into the newly infected body, where they attach to the person and turn them. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Now the world is being pushed to the edge, with only one hope - but no one knows where to start looking.

Overview:

Operation: Deadman’s hand, is a different take on the classical zombie RP. It focuses on the morality of people, when they are put in a situation where they either have to kill an infected, or disable it without causing it too much harm - as these infected aren’t actually dead. It also pit’s the players against a group of survivors that perform experiments on some of the infected. When it starts, almost everyone thinks it's an actual apocalypse, given the microchips are an unknown element.

Themes:

Morality
Humanity
Fear
Survival

Sidenote:

In a nutshell, this RP is about a group of people whose microchips are either delayed in activating for whatever reason, or just failed to function properly. There are no pro-super zombie killers who've trained and prepared for this day since they were the age of -insert age- and know every possible way to survive the current situation. I want it as close to real as possible, if I can help it.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask me here, or in a PM(All questions asked in PMs will be answered there, and then transferred here, without the identity of the asker.

The world hasn't gone to complete shit, yet, so there are guns available - but you won't just be grabbing them willy nilly.

This has its roots in the novel Prey by Michael Crichton, and other Zombie RPs.

Character Sheet and Discussion:

Welcome to Dead Man's Hand, and the area about the characters. This won't be long.

The people you will be playing are those who have ahd their chips malfunction for some reason, or another. They can believe what they want, but ultimately, they will be together for the most part during this RP. They can be ones who just want to survive, or those who want to save the affected, or those who want to experiment on them to see what happened. In essence, no one knows about the microchips for the most part - but a paranoid conspiracy theorist and some out of the blue 'microchips are in us' character isn't out of the question.

As far as military, it'll be on a case by case basis. but there will be no gung ho military personnel, with advanced military tactics and master marksmenship with all weapons. Survival training? Sure, a bit will do. Green Beret with a stint in the Seals? No, get out. I've already talked to one person about possibly military involvement, so we're going to see where that goes. There will definitely be a military presence, whether it is militia or professional, like any number of armies.

Please post all Charry Sheets in the associated CS Depo, coming soon.

Name:

Age:

Gender:

Appearance: (Written or pictures of real people)

Personality:

Skills: (What are you good at, don't get too overboard.)

Weakness: (Oh no, the dreaded weaknesses. These keep you honest. Don't give me anything only you can control, anything that can't be readily manipulated. Don't tell me your only weakness is some rare Ugandan plant, that only grows three days out of the year during their hottest season in the middle of the shadeless one mile diameter circle of the area, in a wartorn place that kills anyone who comes within five miles.) These can be things like a bum arm, poor stamina, poor senses or something. Get creative. I promise NOT to ultimately screw you over.

Equipment: (No, honey bunches of oats, you will not be wielding a massive amount of guns. One, maybe, limited bullets. Probably find more later.)

History:

Post Sample: Link to something, write something, you know... anything. Just so I can get a feel for you. It can be from anything, hopefully within the provided guidelines. It doesn't have to be related to this RP. If you don't have anything, that's fine. I'll stalk the balls out of your previous posts. I can do that.

Announcements:

06/21/14: IC is up

Summaries:

06/21/14: Jack Johnson, part of the problem, makes it to Asheville and the library. He changes his name, in private, to avoid any future suspicion.
06/21/14: Card, having likely been dealing drugs or doing something similarly unscrupulous in the general vicinity of the University, has been marooned in a house a few streets from the Library.
06/21/14 Corey makes it into the library, body intact but pride somewhat dented.
06/21/14 Free from prison our favorite outlaw biker gets a bike and then wrecks it, buggering up his left arm but disabling two infected in the process. His small triumph and dirty old man thoughts about campus life are soon interrupted by the growing horde of infected that now chase him as he runs onto the campus.

06/24/14 As Corey tries to clear the library, he leaves his supplies down the near the reception desk but is knocked out by an unknown assailant on the second floor.
06/24/14 Nelia makes it to the Library, using the scenic route of traversing to the second floor via the wall piping, after making it inside she finds no one there as she suspected there to be, thus she calls out to find if anyone is there, or if it is too surrounded on the inside by the infected, bold actions indeed.
06/24/14 Card makes it out of the house by the skin of his teeth and somehow survives the short journey into Campus. Taking a moment to catch his breath by the Zeis building, he realizes the path to the Library, his intended destination for the fairly primitive reasons of general size and security, is filled with infected and without some outside help he could be in trouble.
06/24/14 Vincent avoids the highway horde, creeps through Mullen Park coming across Card's ill fated encounter with a young woman, and finally spots the library. Requiring a distraction Vincent sacrifices some gear and most importantly his last alcohol stash in order to detonate the gas tank of a car. With all the whack jobs gathering for a kumbaya moment around the car fire Vincent makes it to the library, sneaks in through a window, and is overcome by is illness, injuries, and general lack of health.

FAQ

What are the infected humans gonna be like? Are they gonna be the slow, shambling creatures of the dark, dirty? Or are they going to be some mutated zombie infected, shambling creatures of the dark? Sorry to burst your hopefully bubbles, but the zombies retain their physical attributes, just a little more primitive and cannibal. Their primary function isn't to kill, but to infect more and more people. That's always the kick in the nads, or punch up top(for the ladies), isn't it? That means, you may have gotten through the first bit - but damn if you're making it through another infection.

What about the other factions, can I join them? No, silly rabbit! But you can share their ideaologies and try to further that goal if you so desire.

What is the end goal? Can they be cured? Why yes, a EMP burst may do the trick - or a dangerous amount of electricity to short it out. So hey, how about that? Another character idea! You were turned, but an accidental run in with an exposed wire or something saved your life!

Seriously, can I be a gungho military (wo)man? Come'on, lemme be one! No! Love you. <3

Rules:

Please, don't flame each other. I understand, you may harmlessly jest with each other and whatnot, and that's fine. But there is a line, between playful fireball lobbing, and 'Fuck it, flamethrower this gas soaked human being.'

I'd like it if you left little summaries at the end of your posts, about the main bits of your IC Posts. It's not a replacement for reading posts, it's not a replacement for posts. It's so if I, or someone else can't sit down to read a post in full due to being on the run, we can get a general gist of what to expect. Don't have to do it, but I will.

Post size? I'm not too fussed by it. I would like at least three, of substantial story moving paragraphs. Mine will likely be longer, but I'm GM, I can do fancy things like that.

As far as posting, it works like this. There is no posting order. There is, however, a posting time limit. That happens to be a week, you have a week between my post, and my next post to get your post in. You may miss one, but if you miss two in a row, you're out unless you have a good reason for it. One person has already expressed that they will be gone for a few weeks. Let me know and I can work with you. I'm not a bad guy.

Looking good, I may have you add in/change one of your weaknesses to something that is more prominent - unless you have a good reason for them all, so I know that they aren't just something that you control, and can switch on and off at will.

Though Between Two Worlds could turn out to be good enough.

Make sure, when you finish, you put it in the Character Depo, easier for me to keep track of them.

I will relocate and elaborate on the weakness, many go hand and hand with his personality and history so when I complete those they may make more sense. I welcome any input or advise though, especially if it makes the character more enjoyable for the storyline. I planned on the weaknesses feeding into each other, the alcoholism exacerbating the PTSD, which exacerbates the amoral behavior but I can see how this may not be the kind of weakness you are looking for.

Though I had never planned on playing just the "cool alcoholic" that sips from a flask (planned on making it a real addiction) I could always do a guy in the first or second stage of Cirrhosis. That would be a serious weakness.

This looks interesting, i'll guess this is still in the works of being flung into motion. Suppose i'll pop up a character for this, should I post it in the depo or here for you to check it over?
