Name - Kartago
Location - Link.
Leader - Admiral Mansur Hariri
History - Kartago is a reclusive state existing outside of the protection of the International Union's planetside sphere of control. Originally founded by Lebanese refugees angry at the early IU in the wake of the Beirut Scandal, an event that sullied the IU's handling of the evacuation of Earth during the Listener Invasion, Kartago became a haven for those trying to flee the safe zone states for any reason. They have accepted political refugees, adventurers and explorers, pioneers, the marginalized and many more groups that have an interest in the world outside of IU jurisdiction. Their reputation, however, is based on the more unsavory people the Kartagoans have attracted. Criminals, rebels, deviants, pirates, slavers... there are few better places for these sorts on Brahma.

The Admiralty of Kartago is a loose dictatorship that has thus far, in it's short life, been inherited along bloodlines. The Government of Kartago is more interested in protecting the settlement from outside threats, making sure to obey IU Communication Restrictions so that the IU has little reason to crack down on them. They have also made alliances with Surrounding Tkai states, treating them as equally as they treat the human states. This alliance, combined with the common knowledge that the Kartagoans are well armed and are well acquainted with the southern jungles, have played part of the reason why the IU have let them be.

Several smaller communities have began to pop up in the area surrounding the small wilderness state. The government of Kartago, not organized in a way that makes them capable of running a full-fledged nation state, has made no significant attempt to govern them. In some ways, the presence of these smaller bases have turned Kartago into an anarchic mockery of the metropolitan cities of the Safe Zone.

Well, I'm working through an admittedly dry post that's really stumped my progress in this RP. As consolation, here's some concept art of a Brahman predator to inspire some adventures. Also, it is interesting to note that it is a distant evolutionary relative to the Batmen.

Run an introductory post? I didn't have anything to post myself until I wrote something introducing everything on my end. And everything has evolved from there or the posts thereafter.

This roleplay interests me for three reasons:

One, it's a science fiction roleplay. Science fiction is one of my favorite writing genres.

Two, It takes place on a single planet, which is relatively uncommon when it comes to science fiction NRPs and NRP-hybrids. Small scale is best scale.

And three, it puts strong emphasis on character interaction and, if I'm not mistaken, character development. Large-scale NRPs seem to always go over terribly for me, because playing a single planet in a science fiction NRP makes you a prime target for invasion. This becomes overbearingly annoying when you're trying to focus on something other than who has the strongest space fighter or the most powerful army of steroid-infused space marines--if you know what I mean.

Before I go into some light detail about my idea, is there any information on the Tkrai other than that which is listed in the OP?

Nothing I can call up so far. The only people that have had any significant dealings with them so far would be me and Vilage. Googer was also somewhat responsible for their development.

On my end at least: the Tkrai live in the lowest quarter of Kangchai, that being formally known as the Under Quarter. Informally that area is known as Under Town, Bat Town, Cesspit, The Pit, and so on. And given its depth it only really gets light briefly when the sun is at the right angle over head and the gas giant Brahma is in orbit around isn't in the way, but that'd block the sun for that day or week or whatever anyways.

The Tkrai there largely live in squalor and are paid the minimum of international credits for their work keeping the pump houses working. There's not a lot of legit credits in circulation there so a lot of "trade" is done off the books with the improvised and currently over-inflated black-market currency known as "Likes".

I did writing about it in my last post and in my next I intend to explore the Tkrai there in full as I move ahead with my current central arc. So we'll meet the firs prominent Tkrai and the local Tkrai Advocacy Group representative.

Beyond the Kangchai Tkrai refugees there's likely no uniform culture so I wouldn't worry about representing the race as a whole. So long as you're aware of the numerous local groups for consistency purposes then you're fine, unless you're on the other side of the world from the safe zone.

I see.

Well, let me throw this concept up for evaluation:

I have this idea of a human establishment hat has lived outside of the safe zone for many generations; this same community is moderately-sized, and has a relatively large presence in the wilds, but has since made deep connections with their Tkrai neighbors to the point where both species have begun to intermingle for the sake of increased productivity and survival chances. Technology has been traded in exchange for information pertaining to the local fauna and flora, geographical features of the landscape and access to the deep underground complexes where the Tkrai make their homes (which may lead to valuable gems and ores which can be used for industry and the sort). The perfect bro-mance if anything.

Because they don't care much for the other human governments of the world, this human faction has more or less allied itself with the Tkrai of the wild zone of Brahma, with both conducting regular strategic joint-raids against mercenary companies, mining missions and logging operations that draw too close to their jungle home in order to sustain themselves; their profound use of modern weaponry, specifically light transports, powered exoskeletons and other military-grade hardware, makes them far more annoying to deal with than standard tribal peoples armed with spears and whatnot. Things have only become worse since the Tkrai have gotten their hands (or paws...or claws...or whatever they use) on this same weaponry.

I'm unsure where I'm going to take this from here, but that's the political rundown of it. Historical information, and the reasons behind such an uncanny alliance, are another problem entirely. I'll think of something of course, because I want this brain fart to grow into something functional and awesome.

Also: the current nations of Brahma have only been active for 50 or so years, correct? Or has Brahma been colonized before, near the beginning of Mankind's expansive conquest of the cosmos, which could result in some nations being a century, two centuries or perhaps almost three centuries old?

The influx of humanity on Brahma happened fifty years ago with Earth's destruction. So a lot of the human stuff here is considerably new. Prior, it had been explored or surveyed for resources by Earth-based mining companies and interests. But it wasn't really heavy colonization until the Earth refugees arrived, fleeing the Listeners.

On Brahma Tkrai development has really been stunted by the Godzilla-tier megafauna that inhabits the moon-world outside of the human-built Safe Zone. To that effect I'm going to imagine a lot of everything outside would just as well end up as Vilage's concept of Kartago. Or a situation otherwise severely stressed and stunted out of having to fight, keep watch of, or move away from local monsters.

A couple of things about the Tkrai...

When writing about them you should attend to how their biological differences would effect their culture. This is a better approach than copying Earth cultures would be, because whereas copying earth cultures is easy what you will end up with will be pretty nooby.

We've established that, in their native environment when they are not forced to live under human conditions, the Tkrai are climbers. Their physiology is gonna most likely be some sort of cross between monkeys, bats, and flying squirrels, with an emphasis on the bat-look. They have proto-wings with which they most likely cannot fly, but they could glide from tree to tree or rock to rock. This is also going to change the way they fight, since they wouldn't use their limbs in the same exact ways that humans do. I don't think spears will necessarily be that popular. I've introduced the use of obsidian blades that are strapped to the wrists or ankles as something that exists in the south. Whether or not this also exists in the north has not been decided. I also figure that their warfare, even in the context of advanced civilizations, won't look anything like human warfare. Tkrai legions lining up and fighting in formation seems unwieldy. We're most likely looking at something that is more three dimensional and organized in a way that isn't necessarily easy to compare to human fighting. A well orchestrated guerrilla-skirmish type warfare that involved every surface available.

Their psychology is going to be different too. This is a race that lives on a planet so aggressively difficult to survive that their are practically at war with the environment. After all, we've established that humanity is having a hard time pushing back the wilderness, and has been practically incapable of doing so past the safe zone. They are going to be hardy.

Another thing to remember is that Googer and Hugs have established this world as being porous and stringed with caves. There is going to be a world underground that we haven't explored yet, and I suspect the Tkrai will be a major part of that.
