But... what if the Marshmellow Queen wants to MARRY King Edward Longshanks?

<Snipped quote>

That's not a bad thought. But it means splitting your playerbase into three groups, limiting interaction between them. I dunno. This is a hard problem to tackle.

One thing that might be important to ask is this: what are the origins of the different species and cultures on this planet? Was everything born on this planet naturally? Are you going for a traditional fantasy background? Or is there maybe a splash of science-fiction in this planet's history?

Personally, I'm not against the idea of distinct cultures slowly homogenizing, but you'd have to enforce that somehow. That'd be the problem.

Maybe we're over thinking things - aiming for too much realism.

Perhaps go with 3, and just let anyone do anything - cultural homogenization be damned. Then we're all real close with our whacky ideas, competeing at home and abroad to spread aforementioned whacky ideas.

Everything was intended to have been born onto the world naturally (yay evolution!). Though I heard someone yell "I WANNA PLAY ALIENS :D", in which case I could be swayed to allow for the survivors of a doomed expedition (stranded without their technology) to exist; although it would be easier for you just to brew your "alien" species on the planet. I mean what's an alien anyway? Just a creature from somewhere else, right?

I mean we could take this anywhere; if you wanted sci-fi, we could give each civilisation its own moon, and link them with something akin to Star Gates, and have ourselves some inter-planetary ancient warfare. But that's probably pushing things into the realm of FUBAR.

Everything is in a really early state atm, so now's the time to debate everything to death.

I'm interested, and I'd like to have a nation more akin to Mesopotamia than Europe. I was just wondering if since we will have 500 years of background, would that mean that all our nations had sprung up at the same time? And also, I think that while cultural interactions would inevitably occur, it wouldn't be some all-powerful force.

Some good points here.

As an aside, the three big cultures I'm thinking about while I'm brainstorming nation ideas are the Bedouin, the Mayans, and the Moors.

Having thought about matters, I think we'll be best served by starting off in close proximity to each other - with the rest of the world "greyed out" until we start setting up little colonies.

There will be no restriction on culture types.

All nations will be springing up at *vaguely* the same time. To confirm, our various races will have just gone from their hunter gatherer life styles (or equivilant of), to setting up agricultural communities. At the RP's start, players will each have a SINGLE city. Then, with each post during the Evolution Phase, they will start branching out, developing governments and religions, as well as technology. If I set the tech limit for the first evolution phase as "Iron Age", I think that'll stop anyone from trying to conjure laser guns.

I know this simplifies things a little, but adhering to the realism of what would probably happen just makes everything a bit of a mind f**k. Best we just pick our peoples, and guide them through.

Here's the map with what I thought would be the best starting area; it's mostly jungle, with some plains, a whole bunch of mountains and a bit of forest.

EDIT: Having trouble uploading things to Imgur at the moment, and am using a crappy sub to stand in. The real map will be much bigger, once you use "view full image".

SECOND EDIT: Turns out Firefox isn't getting on well with Imgur at the moment, forcing me to use Edge *gasp* to upload the image. So there it is, in its entirety.

Eh, I'm not so sure about the civilization having just gone from hunter-gatherer lifestyles to settled ones. I think we should start off more like in the Bronze Age, with our cities just starting to sort of come to prominence. I mean, I'm not saying everything needs to be totally accurate, but the dawn of agriculture and the iron age were several thousands of years apart.

And yet again Sovereign raises another good point: time frame.

Human civilisation has been around for what? 6000 or so years?

And look how far we've come; Christ almighty. Things were real sluggish for the first part, and only in the last couple of thousand years have we really been achieving anything - and then even that's debatable.

So if we follow Earth's chronology of events, it would take several Evolution Phases to really get anywhere as far as technology is considered. This could be solvable by making the evolution phase last a thousand years - but that's a huge, huge leap.

So perhaps we can start in the Bronze Age, for as Wiki states:

"The Bronze Age is a time period characterized by the use of bronze, proto-writing, and other early features of urban civilization. The Bronze Age is the second principal period of the three-age Stone-Bronze-Iron system, as proposed in modern times by Christian Jürgensen Thomsen, for classifying and studying ancient societies."

Just so you all know, I've been crafting the RP on the first post of this thread. What you see there, is what the finished product will be.

Of course!

That's at least a couple of NRP veterans I seem to have gained, which is heartening - it means I'm going in the right direction.

Looks great to me. I'm looking forward to this; it's something different and I like it. When can we expect sheets?

EDIT: Also, what do the flat lines on the map signify?

Yeys. My only actual issue with the OP is that I can't see imgur links for the map for some reason, only tinypic works for me.

I like this map.

I've never had a problem with IMGUR myself, but then the only website I hate for images is Photobucket. Photobucket is the absolute devil.

I see symbols for mountains, forests, hills, another kind of forest... I'm assuming the flat lines are plains? And what are the little series of lines that are arrayed like a rising sun?

Does TinyPic auto resize images? I seem to remember it messing me around in the past. The map is 4000 pixels, so it's quite big, and you'll want to view it full size to see all those pre-generated details that I love so much.

If TinyPic should be able to host it, I'll switch to it.

Anyone else having problems with my Imgur shiz?

Actually, I think the rising suns are plains? Looks like grass to me? And the little lines are um, marshes?

I'll attach a key when I get a minute, to allay any confusion.

I think Clockwork's problem is Clockwork can't actually see IMGUR images AT ALL. No image. The map is pretty big, though it appears small on this screen; I always just Copy Image Location and paste that into an address bar.

My issue is that I'm actually using a school laptop that has decided to block all the fun stuff and imgur is one of them because it has "adult content" (not that I'm doubting it doesn't kek). But yeah, even if I put it into the address bar, the only image I'd be able to see is the tiny one that google provides when you search by image.

I see.

Errr, would it perhaps be best for me to email the map to you? Along with any future maps that reflect the changing of borders?

Or if that's too dodgy (stranger danger!!), let me try TinyPic.

Alright, here goes:

EDIT: Tad too small, unless you think you can work with it.
