Could I get a sort of character skeleton to work with for the stats? I'm not great with the whole maths thing so that would be a massive help.

Page 13 says you can have a very high default like I posted. (15, 15, 15, 8, 8, 8) legitimately giving me 16 in ALL stats.

or the skeleton can be 13, 13, 13, 12, 12, 12 or ANY set of numbers between those extremes.

Okay, made this myself, works pretty well.
Base stats are all 8.
You have 34 normal points to spend.
These 34 normal points cannot raise your stats above 17.
You then roll a d10.
The roll determines how many ancestral points you get. The ancestral point can be spent anywhere but can also raise stats to 18+.
If any single stat is an 18 then you must roll a d20 to see if you can spend more points on that stat. If you roll a 7 or less then you can spend 1 more ancestral point in that stat. You must repeat the d20 roll to see if you can raise the stat by a further 1 each time.
Some of this is down to chance, as so is life.

Thoughts?

I would prefer that no rolling is done. 13, 13, 13, 12, 12, 12, as the default stat sounds the best.

Unless all player characters had equal ancestral points, like all of us having +1, 2, 3, etcetera bonus points to our character.

as so is life.

Where does it say you can pick 16 for all stats at the GM's discretion? It seems stupidly OP for something any previous version of D&D, don't know about 5th or 4th

You start with 15, 15, 15, 8, 8, 8

Then 27 point buy. Humans gain 1 attribute point for all attributes.

@ Fallen
With 27 point buy, all 8's can be raised to 15, then +1 with every stat as a Human race, they all raise to 16.

@ GM, page 13, I think I might have misunderstood the character creation process.

So, does character creation start with (15, 15, 15, 8, 8, 8), or (13, 13, 13, 12, 12, 12)?

fifth edition character creation is easy. I basically did mine in five minutes. In 3.5 Edition, even if I get it over with I can screw myself with a horrible dice roll. Under Fifth edition character rules, I just made a totally awesome but not over powered character, was totally satisfied in every way, in obedience to the rules as written.

In 3.5 edition, I could roll something like 12 across the board except maybe one score of 15 and be stuck with it, or worse.
Or some very lame, vanilla boring 36 or 27 point buy where everything is a 10 except for a couple of high scores +2 from a racial trait. And then I would have to change my character class to meet my ability scores.
