Waking up next to Phillip would never, ever get old - and even though they hadn’t been missing breakfast in favor of other activities for the entire week (honestly, Alejandro thought that it was probably a record for them; an entire week of being present and no more than five minutes late!) thanks to both of them wanting to keep Gen and Imani company during the meal, Alejandro thought that constantly being able to be with Phillip more than made up for it. The two of them were used to keeping a secret, especially after three years of fooling around behind closed doors, and so far, Aciras had been no exception; both of them had been careful not to let anything out of the ordinary slip out.

To be fair, it wasn’t like the two of them were constantly glued to each others’ sides. Alejandro kept Han company, of course, when it was expected of them, and he went to Leo for hair advice, and hung out with Gen and Imani as well. Ara had been busy with schoolwork, but he did manage to say hi to her a few times, and although Alejandro wasn’t avoiding Chris - whatever they had been had ended years ago - he was careful not to come off as overly friendly, the way he might have been with, say, Raven (who he did end up getting to talk to, in the days following the ball).

Alejandro sighed happily, glancing fondly over at the other prince and taking a moment to lean over and kiss his nose, a habit that had started when they first got together. I could get used to this, he mused to himself, waiting for Phillip to wake up.

Phillip stirred.

After nearly a week, he no longer had to orient himself when he woke up. He knew where he was and who he would find curled up next to or even against him. Some mornings, especially if it was early, he would burrow closer to Alejandro and just go back to sleep.

This time he shifted, opening his eyes, and glanced up with a small smile upon finding the other prince already up. “Hello.” He smothered a yawn, reaching out to squeeze one of Alejandro’s hands. “What time is it?”

Alejandro smiled back at him, giving Phillip’s hand a small squeeze in response. “It’s not too late, I think,” he said, twisting around to check his phone. “We don’t have anything until the carnival, at two. It’s only ten right now.”

He turned back to face Phillip again. “We could get food,” he said, his expression a bit wry. “After we get out of bed.”

Phillip looked thoughtful. “What do you say to breakfast in bed?” He pushed up on one arm so that he was at least sitting up a bit. “We’ll see everyone at the faire. I could text Gen and ask her to just join us in here.”

“I like that idea,” Alejandro replied, snuggling closer and leaning up so that he could kiss Phillip’s cheek. “Do you think she’s up yet?”

“Probably.” Phillip tilted his head down so that he could give Alejandro a proper kiss, lingering for a moment just because he could. With another small smile, he added, “I’ll see.”

Alejandro made a small, pleased sound when Phillip kissed him, shifting so that they were pressed closer still. It would have been nice to just lie there and kiss some more, but Alejandro didn’t want to keep Gen waiting, so when Phillip drew away, he didn’t initiate anything else. “Sounds good,” he agreed, smiling again.

Phillip shifted to accommodate Alejandro, so that he could use his phone without disturbing the other prince. A quick text to Genevieve later—and then one to Imani, to let her know they would meet her downstairs—and it was settled. Phillip glanced around the room, making sure it was fit for callers, but thanks to Alejandro’s fastidious care, there weren’t any clothes that needed to be picked up or put away.

Gen appeared a few minutes later in leggings and an oversized sweater, making Phillip smile. The weather in Aciras really was not suited to her preferences.

After they’d ordered breakfast from the staff, they sat companionably, talking about the past week and their plans for the fair.

“I think I’m going to meet up with Henri, actually,” Gen said, looking only mildly apologetic. “So that he doesn’t have to ride over by himself or with strangers.”

“That’s fine,” Phillip said, unbothered. He was glad Gen and Henri were getting to spend so much time together, even though he suspected it was largely due to some kind of distress on Henri’s part. All Genevieve had said earlier in the week was that he was having a tough time.

Alejandro was delighted to see Gen, of course; the two of them had become friends through Phillip. Spending time with her was always fun.

He nodded along in acknowledgement when Gen said that she was going to ride with Henri. “Oh! But before I forget, Gen, I need to ask your opinion on something.” He cast a glance over to Phillip, and rolled his eyes, smiling teasingly. “Mostly because your brother wears boring clothes so I don’t trust his opinion.”

Alejandro pushed the covers aside and got fully out of bed, heading towards the closet (it was much too small, in Alejandro’s opinion. Which was why he’d converted most of the adjoining living area into closet part two). The hat he was looking for was on one of the shelves lining the wall.

“Do you think I should wear this today? I got it before coming to Aciras. It seemed pretty fitting for the kingdom.” He grinned, and brought the red cowboy hat out with a dramatic flourish, holding it up so that Gen could see the delicate strands of diamonds that dangled from the brim. “I have the perfect earrings to go with this, too,” he added as an afterthought.

Genevieve visibly bit back a smile as she considered the hat while Phillip just shook his head at Ali’s disparaging comments about his appearance. “Just because they don’t have jewels dangling off them does not mean my clothes are boring,” he said.

“It’s very you,” Gen offered. “But do you think it might get uncomfortable, being at the fair all day? You won’t have anywhere to put it, and if it gets windy or you’re on a ride, those crystals could blow into your face.”

"Yes it does,” Alejandro shot back to Phillip, grinning again before turning back to Gen and giving her a thoughtful look. “I guess that’s true. I’ll save it for something else, then,” he said, putting the hat back into the closet.

“I can’t wait,” Gen said, still with that small, amused smile.

The rest of the meal passed with chatter about the fair and guesses what entertainments it might bring—Phillip and Genevieve both were sure it would not be the same as the sort of fairs they had in Maris—and, of course, talk about what everyone was wearing. After Phillip gave Gen some gentle teasing about how she was going to manage the Aciran heat—it was common knowledge that she did not bare her legs in public, ever, for any reason—the younger Anders excused herself to go and get ready.

Phillip followed suit, ducking across the hall to his room to change.

After Phillip and Gen left - Phillip promising that he would come right back, after getting dressed - Alejandro set about picking an outfit for the day. He found a nice pair of jeans and a short-sleeved shirt, made of pale turquoise silk and decorated with a white floral design. Then, before Phillip could get back and tell him no, Alejandro found one of his shorter scarves - more of a neckerchief, really - that both of them were familiar with, from the last time they got together. It was a pretty shade of blue that matched his overall outfit, in Alejandro’s opinion.

Phillip was back five minutes later, and Alejandro smiled as he came in wearing a gray v-neck and jeans. “Will you brush my hair, Prince Charming?” he asked playfully, stepping in close to kiss him lightly on the nose before holding out a hairbrush.

“I shouldn’t,” Phillip said, “after you made fun of my clothes.” But he was already smiling and taking the brush. “Go on, sit down.” The scarf, he did not comment on; Alejandro was going to do what he wanted, and complaining only gave him energy.

“I was only stating a fact,” Alejandro answered, shooting Phillip a smug smile as the other prince agreed to it, anyway. Alejandro sat down in front of the vanity, his smile turning fond as he met Phillip’s eyes in the mirror. Phillip started to brush out his hair, and Alejandro savored the feeling of his hands smoothing over his hair, sighing happily.

Phillip relaxed, too, always enjoying the simple intimacy that came from running his hands through Ali’s hair. He brushed it gently and thoroughly, making sure to get all of the little knots and tangles that had formed during sleep.

“Done. I hope it meets your standards,” he teased.

Alejandro ran a hand through his hair and took the brush back from Phillip, setting it back down on the table. “It always does, when it’s you,” he teased back, standing up so that he could give Phillip another quick kiss on the cheek before sitting back down. “I promise, I won’t be more than ten minutes,” he said as he started to put his hair into a French braid, figuring that it would be good to have it out of the way.

After he was done with the braid, Alejandro put on sunscreen (offering some to Phillip in the process) and picked out a pair of dangly earrings. “I’m ready,” he said, giving himself a final once-over in the mirror before hopping up. He took Phillip’s hand and squeezed it gently.

Phillip squeezed back with a smile. “You look good.” Not fit for a day spent entirely outside, maybe, but he’d make sure they both had plenty of time in the shade.

As was his habit, Phillip checked the hall and found it empty—safe for the pair of them to leave Alejandro’s room together without needing explanation, though they had plenty of potential explanations ready, should the need ever arise.

They made it downstairs without incident, stepping into the warm afternoon sun—and as they approached the waiting vehicles, Imani appeared.

“Imani!” Phillip greeted warmly. “You look nice.”

"You really do," Alejandro agreed, shooting the princess a cheerful smile.

The first one to leave her group, Juliet was one of the first ones in her class. It wasn’t that she didn’t like spending time with the Knights, it was moreover that she disliked partying, and that seemed like all they wanted to talk about. She wasn’t interested in that, so she’d slipped away and headed off to her first class, which — for some reason — was Biology, which she didn’t even like to begin with. Coupling in the fact that she knew she was the only one from her lil clique that was going to be here, and finally, top that with an icing of assigned seating and…

Juliet was crankier than she normally was.

It wasn’t like it mattered much, she wasn’t much for putting her taekwondo skills to use in anger; that was against what her teacher had drilled into her head. She was only to use it in formal spars. Though she knew her teacher’s intent had been to keep her from using it outside of the dojo, but… Juliet bent the rules a little bit and considered beating Artie and Lance up as ‘formal spars.’

With a huff, Juliet stopped to look at the seating chart for the biology classroom, and when she saw who she was sitting with, she almost immediately perked up. The chart listed her as sitting next to Stephanie Wang, her old friend from middle school! Whether that was intentional or not, Juliet was excited, and her mood was already looking up. Now with a small smile on her face, and significantly less cranky, Juliet sat down at her desk, and waited for her lab partner to roll in.

After the assembly, Steph bade a cheery farewell to Melissa and Tiffany and headed off to the first class on her schedule. Bio was, like, okay, but not the most fun thing in the world, either.

Well, whatever. Hopefully the teacher’s nice, Steph mused to herself as she made her way down the hallway, a bit sad that neither Melissa nor Tiff would be in the class with her. And hopefully they don’t assign too much homework. Homework is sooooo lame.

When she got to the classroom, everyone was crowded around a seating chart - ugh, what were they, kindergarteners?! Assigned seats, really? - and Steph patiently waited for the people in front of her to find themselves, before she stepped forward and saw that she would be seated next to…

...Jules?

I don’t think we’ve talked since eighth or ninth grade, she reflected, quickly locating the table. Jules was already sitting there, and as she got closer, Steph noted that she was wearing the cutest yellow sweatshirt.

“Hey, Jules!” Steph chirped, plopping into the seat next to her and rifling through her backpack for her pencil case and a binder. “How have you been? Did you have a good summer?”

Juliet looked up with a smile, excited to reunite with her former best friend. “Hey, Steph! Long time, no see. It’s been like… four years now, right?” Juliet was a lot happier knowing she’d be sitting with someone she knew well… or, at least used to know well. “Yeah, summer was good, how was yours?” She asked, making conversation — though there was a lot more to catch up than just summer though.

“Have you been? I feel like we haven’t talked in… forever. It’s definitely been a while, hasn’t it? I was kinda salty when I saw we had assigned seating, but this isn’t too bad. It’s kinda cool that we’re gonna be like, lab partners. How’s life?” She said, smiling, and practically ignoring everyone else as she focused on Stephanie — including the teacher that was trying to call the class to order. Something about how their assigned seating partner would be their lab partner… “You’ve been doing cheerleading still, right?”

“Oh yeah, I think so! Time flies,” Steph said with a laugh. “Oh, my summer was pretty good! Honestly, any extended period of time where I don’t have to deal with P.E. is a good time,” she answered, a bit wryly. God, but she hated being forced into physical activity. Wasn’t being a cheerleader enough? That shit was tiring! And super time-consuming! P.E. was so freaking pointless!!!!!!

“Oh god, tell me about it, assigned seating is the worst. Like, are we fifth graders??? No???? And all these people keep talking about how random bullshit will-” Steph paused to make air quotes- “prepare us for college, or whatever. I don’t think they have assigned seats in college!”

She smiled. “But yes, it’s super cool that we’re going to be lab partners. And life is alright, you know. It’s the first day of school and all; I already can’t wait for winter break.” At Jules’ last question, Steph nodded in response. “Oh, yeah! The one good thing about starting school, I guess,” she answered with a sheepish laugh.

“What about you? Do you have anything fun going on right now?”

“Uhm, well, not really. I still go to taekwondo, I still watch a lot of Disney stuff… I’m way better at makeup now than I was when we were in eighth grade, though, that’s for sure. Oh, I finally got to go to Disneyland last Halloween! That was the greatest time of my life, I think.” Juliet brightened up a bit as she looked back at happy memories. Of course, she wanted to go back there, but who knew if she’d ever get the chance! She had a plan to apply to a few schools in California, but she wasn’t sure if she’d qualify for them… she could do nothing but hope, unfortunately.

“Uhm… other than that, I work at the movie theater, with Daze… It sucks, but hey, you gotta buy k-cups somehow, I guess?” Juliet shrugged her shoulders and looked forward toward the teacher. It was weird how the more things change, the more they seemed to stay the same. Even though they hadn’t spoken in such a long time, it was as easy as ever. “You really hate P.E. that much? I kinda like it, personally, but I think Daze agrees with you… She can be kinda lazy, except for when it comes to like, eating, sleeping, and — apparently — defending her ex-boyfriend and then running away.” Juliet said that last part with a bit of uncharacteristic venom to her voice, betraying the fact that she didn’t really care for her sister’s ex boyfriend.

“But anyway, yeah. There’s a lot to catch up on!”

“Disney!!!! I love Disney,” Steph answered, beaming at Jules. “That’s so fun! And Disneyland, really???? I’m sooooooo jealous, I’ve never been! How was it?”

Steph nodded in agreement as Jules started talking about her job. “Working at a movie theater sounds really annoying. Do you guys at least get free movies though? And oh yeah, how could I forget? Tell Daze I said hi!” She paused, giggled. “I guess I just don’t like the Pacer and all that bullshit,” Steph admitted. “It’s so booooooooring.”

Steph’s eyes widened at Jules’ next words. “Oh, no! What happened?” she asked, forgetting about her hate for P.E. for a second.

“Huh? Oh, Daze was dating Joey Powers. You know, the skateboarding weed guy? I didn’t really approve, and I made that pretty clear… anyway, today, Artie came in and I guess he gave Joey a ride… He said Joey is weird, which, he totally is, then after that Daze got all defensive and like ran off to her first class. She couldn’t handle the heat, I guess.” Juliet said with a shrug of her shoulders. The way she spoke of not approving of Daze dating was almost too candid. “I just think, her time could be like, better spent doing… anything. Ya know? Dating is weird.” Juliet didn’t have much interest in dating, at least not yet. She was kind of young… There was a lot of life left to live!

“But Disneyland? It was ah-may-zing. I can’t wait to go again! There was so much food, Steph, and it was like… heaven. Oh man, it was so amazing. I got a picture with Stitch! But, it’s… kind of not a very good picture.” Juliet had a bit of a blush on her cheeks as she mentioned the picture, giving an awkwardly small smile.

“Oh, Joey? Yeah, I know him, sort of! That’s a good way of describing him,” Steph said, smiling. “I feel you, though,” she continued, sympathetically.

Steph listened raptly as Jules described Disneyland. God, that sounds so fun! I’m so jealous now. And I’m sure the picture is super cute! Stitch is such a fun character.”

Steph paused for a moment. “Is Daze still doing dance? It’s been so long since we danced together.”

“Uh, yeah, she is. The picture is just… not cute, trust me, okay? I’m usually cute, but that wasn’t a good look for me… But Daze wouldn’t take another picture! So I’m just stuck with that one… A tragedy. Anyway, I’m glad someone agrees with me about Joey! That dude is super weird.” Juliet said, hooking a lock of hair behind her ear and shaking her head. She didn’t know what Daze had seen in Joey, but clearly it had been something, because they were still friends even now! Juliet didn’t understand. Why couldn’t Daze just wait to go date someone?

“Awww, I’m sure it’s not that bad,” she replied, giving Jules an empathetic look. “Stitch is in it! That makes it at least not horrible, right?”

As for the subject of Joey, AKA Daze’s ex-boyfriend, Steph just shrugged. “I don’t really know him all that well,” she admitted. “But his Twitter statuses are kind of funny!”

Steph took out a pink gel pen as the teacher started setting everything up for the first class. “Oh, by the way, are you going to the party on Friday? I heard that it’s supposed to be at a lake. I think I’m going - Melissa and Tiff too, probably!”

Originally, Jules hadn’t really wanted to go to the party. Parties weren’t really her scene, and even after her friends had all said that they were going, she hadn’t been interested in it. But this? For some reason, Juliet felt like she should say yes, she was going to the party…

“Uh, yeah, I think I’m going. Wanna meet up?”

“Sure! It’ll be so much fun,” Steph answered, then turned her attention to the front of the room as the teacher began the lecture.
Oh I am 100% guilty too don’t get me wrong. It just never really occurred to me before that I could or would want to do make a character that wasn’t attractive less than visually perfect.

I feel that - I think that with this whole 'using-professionals-as-an-FC-business' (which tends to be a rule on the other RP site I'm on), it's impossible to find people who just look plain. There are plenty of high fashion models who wouldn't count as traditionally beautiful (Lili Sumner comes to mind), but they all have some aspect of their visual appearance that is interesting, because why else would they be models lol

And consequently, I feel like all my characters who look just kinda average came from before I started paying attention to the fashion industry

I wonder - does anyone else have a character archetype (so, something that is somewhat defined and common in media) that they rarely see in RPs?

I feel like I almost never see "Big Burly Manly-man with Family they love to talk about" at all.

I love that trope so much in books omg!!! But I agree - I don't see it as much in RP

I guess for me personally I love confident, bubbly girly-girls who also know their own self-worth, because in general I can't think of many examples from TV barring like, Elle Woods (I think? I've never seen Legally Blonde, which is a travesty, I know LOL)
........you know I definitely have a very distinct "type" when it comes to writing characters - all except one of my characters that I've felt are worth the time to save and re-visit are girls, and to quote my friend, I "makes either really really REALLY soft gorls OR like "imma rip you apart with my bare hands" badasses, there is no inbetween". Of course, there are outliers, but I think the majority of my characters can be classified as one of the two in some way, shape, or form, with a 3rd smaller but steadily growing category of girls who are "super extra/girly & sarcastic & spiteful"

Oh I just thought of something else: almost all characters I’ve seen are classically handsome/beautiful. It makes me wanna create more unconventional looking characters, even straight up ugly characters.

Also, I am very much guilty of ^^^^, because I get all my FCs from high fashion models who are usually considered good-looking (or at least interesting-looking) in some way

I think in general, though, it will depend on a combination of the RP setting and the players themselves. I think some settings might be more pre-disposed to having angsty loners, while others can encourage more variation. Like, if it's a mercenary RP, I wouldn't be surprised to see so many orphan/loner types, but if it's a SOL modern royalty RP, I think the nature of the setting in general lets people expand on character ideas more.

I'd like to see more ethnic variation

I think an interesting concept from another RP site that I'm on is how people make "pre-made characters" and assign FCs, to ensure diversity. The GMs aren't usually against people changing their FCs from the suggested/assigned ones, but they do always make a note that people shouldn't white-wash the RP. I'm not totally on-board with pre-made characters 100% of the time, but I don't mind being assigned an FC while also having the option to change if I want to

I think both @Stormflyx and @stone bring up good points - I personally won't usually go searching for an RP in Advanced, just because there's a certain set of genres that are popular in that section (a lot of high fantasy, from what I've noticed) & may not be what I'm looking for at the moment. Nothing wrong with any of the genres, ofc - just not what I personally want to do, sometimes.

And I usually post interest checks in Casual because even if I want to write a long in-depth post because I'm extra as fuck, for some RPs I don't expect everyone else to do so as well. Since the guidelines are looser and more lax, Casual seems like a better place to put that kind of thing than Advanced.

You should consider high casual low advanced :^)
