As far as their use on actual combat goes, realistically one could lethally injure someone.

Spinal cord or vagus nerve damage is pretty unpleasant, aye, but doing enough to actually kill someone is quite a feat.
@Dblade26
Just being able to land pinpoint strikes on the actually very vulnerable spots in the human body such as the liver, the nose, the temples, the floating ribs, the solar plexus etc is pretty damn good, considering that kind of precision does not come easy at all in an actual engagement. Just being able to jab someone on the eyesocket rather than the general face area is a good skill to have.

@Azereiah
I can't tell anyone not to do them, but like Dblade I think they're a copout. It's like, instead of doing any martial arts and working that choreography and whatnot you're just kinda dealing in a no-effort vaguely combative tag. Which is funny because their whole selling point in real life is the idea of no-effort badassery. Anyway, I love Fist of the North Star but the actually memorable fights as such are the ones where the author decided that it didn't have to end within the first contact. Style and genre are fine and all but as a matter of style, I find them pretty boring personally.

Aye, I'm on board with all of the above and with keeping it semi-realistic. With Meilin's demonstration as an example, she pressed on... Er, I forget whether it's the median or ulnar nerve, but that doesn't really matter. Numbness and lack of easy motion is a pretty big deal either way and is realistic enough, since I know I've managed to put my arm to sleep for several minutes by getting hit on the 'funny bone' and by laying on my arm the wrong way. I think @13org is working based on acupuncture and acupressure points which do correspond to actual nerves despite the medical application being mere quackery, so no problem there.

Let's get some Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon tier fighting up in here whichever way it goes. \o/

That's partially why even when I put them on my sheet, It basically amounted to 'give someone a dead arm or something for a bit' and nothing that'd win me a fight while also being hard to use and requiring actually fighting.

And yeah, I agree that just being able to easily land proper precision strikes to anatomical vulnerabilities mid-combat is definitely useful, but it lacks the sense of growth and progression that the powers seem like they're supposed to have in this game.

Agreed. That's pretty realistic and reasonable. Don't underestimate just how distracting it is to not be able to feel and move your arm for a while, though.
I think of this video, mostly because my go-to one for Kyusho is mostly just nothing happening. And besides, there's a very short distance between magical touch spots to magical waves of energy, as shown by the trajectory of the US' foremost expert in no effort knockouts George Dillman.

While there are plenty of spots to hit to incapacitate people, I wouldn't call any of them 'no effort'. But I'm giving it a total pass since we're in anime land here where there're people with laser eyes and fireballs and cryokinesis and shit.
@13org

Nice!

Also, should I post? I always like to leave a two post buffer, even if there's no rule.

You can post now that I've put mine up :P

Jonathan Walker

Jonathan was in the middle of loading plates onto a bar at a bench when Alexei entered. Two hundred and seventy-five pounds were on it so far, and he wasn't quite finished, given that the weight room only had a few fifty-pound plates available. The bench was saddened by the uneven load, but it'd hold up anyway. It always had. He responded with a cheerful façade, though he wasn't really the greatest actor in the world. "That'd be great. Thanks, Professor. I'll have to thank Daler too, next time I see him. How's the family?"

One last plate went on the barbell as Jonathan listened for Alexei's response, bringing the bar up to three hundred pounds total. "Starting off a bit lighter than usual today, since I've been out of it all summer. Not sure how much I've slipped since then," he said as he lay flat on the bench, gripping the bar widely. He'd wait for Alexei to get into position before pushing it up off the rack -- form was everything, including waiting for the spotter to get ready. Even if he was a little out-of-it from the events of the day, he trusted Alexei enough to go to the man with his problems and for advice. It felt more natural than going to Daler or any of the other counselors, who Jonathan felt usually tried to solve problems with brute force.

"I've been thinking about what happened earlier. Seems like I can't connect with people today, if that makes sense."

@Mercurial

Daler Ghumman

Daler nodded sagely as Meilin demonstrated her talents to Kasuke. Pressure points were valuable knowledge, and would permit even a frail student to drop a larger attacker with some finesse. Daler's preferred points to strike had always been the carotid sinuses, though, since that was a surefire way to put someone down even if they had nerve damage. It had the drawback of being potentially fatal to opponents with heart problems or aneurysms, so he tried to avoid it where possible in his older age.

"Of course, the most dangerous knowledge comes later. While Eastern Martial Arts technically encompasses most arts of Asian origin, there is a lot of knowledge that's nothing like what most schools teach. It's one thing to throw and snap a straight punch. It's something completely different to know your own body and your opponent's like the back of your hand," Daler thought towards the two. He'd taken a similar course in the past, though he no longer remembered most of the specifics. The only things that still came naturally to him were blocking and striking with his cane, as in the past two decades, it had fallen out of use with his arthritis. There was some certainty in his mind that Kasuke would do well in the class after some months, but it would be a little difficult pushing her away from her purely academic goals and towards a martial artist's mindset.

The approach of a new student interested him. Roy, one of the more 'troubled' new students, had finally arrived. Daler would let Asa or another instructor deal with his tardiness, though. He spoke using his mouth this time around, responding in kind to the boy's two statements, and his earlier near-silent insult. "I'm sure you have, and I'm sure you are. Welcome to the Institute, Roy, and watch your tongue around here. I'm mostly harmless myself (mostly), but there are a few real fireballs around."

@13org@Silver Carrot@pkken
Just waiting for @13org now. :)
I'm in the middle of a collab post on another RP, so it'll be a little while before I'm able to respond here. Also sorta waiting for another person or two to post so it's not an Azereiah post every other reply on the IC.
@13org@Hammerman So, I've decided I'm gonna have Ryuuto take the Martial Arts class because he absolutely sucks at hand-to-hand fighting. Like, maybe Freyja facepalmed in the tournament when he surrendered the second his opponent put his hands on him, and Ryuuto hadn't even taken any damage. That's pretty much been his MO. "You got past my strings? Fuck, you win." And as such, he's never needed to be treated for any major injuries.

I'm going to be sorely disappointed if Ryuuto doesn't basically turn into Walter C. Dornez by the end of this RP.
@pkken Yeah, not a problem at all. Nice bundle of people around, too. I'd assume Daler would know about your character being enrolled at the Institute.
Sergio Valdez

A new job? Sounds easy enough... Right? (cont. p2.)

"I'll do my best to protect him, then, regardless of what happens. I'll pick up some gear on the way--"

Sergio was cut off by the sound of Don Corvi collapsing into the hallway. Any further discussion of the matter was ended in an instant. Valoran's worry over the Don, and Sergio's own feelings toward the man, set off a cascade of strength in his soul. He would do his job, and he would do it very well. If the Don passed away, then the last thing the East Canaglia Gang needed was for Valoran's son to be lost as well. So with a wave, Sergio quietly slipped past Valoran and Corvi. "Should I take one of the Gang's cars?", he asked Valoran, then he waited for an answer to nod in response and continue on his way.

On the way out, Sergio stopped by the doorman for his sledgehammer. "Get me one of the BARs, too. New job's the protection of a family member and I don't want to risk screwing it up," he said, and the doorman nodded in response before shuffling off to a back room. In a minute, the doorman returned to hand Sergio the weapon and two spare magazines, and Sergio exited the building.
