There is no real ceiling for the age, but the further away from 10 (or 11 for Alola where we currently are) the more of a reason you will need. In answer to your second question, it would be possible to be a bug catcher with 5 Caterpies, but it would be highly unrecommended. This being said, we are around halfway through the story at this point, having done two of the four Grand Trials. While there will be extra padding from a side story, not to mention dealing with Ultra Beasts Jumping in at this point may not be very practical.
